Camped here over the weekend with some family friends and our kids. Love how close it is to Mendocino and Ft. Bragg, but the campground itself feels private and wooded. Great vibe overall. There's a path right to Jug Handle beach right across the street. Honestly I'd give this place five stars, except our second night, the campers next door were super-loud party-types (quiet time is supposed to start at 9PM), and on top of that, unbelievably, an incredibly loud marching band replete with a bass drum and trumpets were playing on what I believe was the property "next door" for hours--at least 'til 11pm. Keep in mind this was a Sunday night (???) Honestly, I was not a happy camper. People go camping to enjoy themselves and to get some peace and quiet at the appropriate time. So if some private party place or private residence nearby is going to have a MARCHING BAND (or whatever it was) going on late on a Sunday night--along with party campers loud-talking late into the night--you should really be up-front that yeah, noise is a thing until late. I'd ask for a refund but I didn't book this trip and I am too tired from lack of sleep. So ... great place for camping, great weekend overall, but late-night noise was an issue, or at least it was for us. read more

This review is long overdue! This is a hidden gem for family get togethers. Guarantee to have an amazing time!! The bunkhouse is clean and the bathroom is spotless. $86 for room that sleeps up to six people. The shower requires one quarter for a 10 minute shower. They provide eight quarters which was not enough for our family. I was lucky to have a roll of quarters in the car. Prior to coming up to the farm I was very lucky to have made contact with Helene Chafin who works for this non profit organization. She was very informative of things we should do and see. She was very sweet to have spent time on the phone sharing all the fun places to visit. She also gave us a tour of the nursery on with native plants at Jughandle Creek Farm. Helene is a singer and we hired her for a fun singalong with the kids around the campfire. Helene introduce us to Fern Tanja, Jughead Creek Farm' naturalist. We hired Fern who gave us a three hour hike into the different terrace starting with the Ecological Staircase at the ocean level to the Pygmy Forest. She was very educational teaching us about the native plants, and how the ecological staircase was created by Mother Nature. This place is about a 10 minute drive to Fort Bragg and Mendocino. Highly recommend to spend at least a week to experience everything this area has to offer. read more

This was our first time camping and we couldn't have asked for a better campground! The sites were spread out and felt private, the outhouses were super clean, and the grounds was quite and inviting. God I love this place! Definitely not for everyone. We got the cozy Eucalyptus cabin. I slept in the loft, which gets hot and stuffy with the wood stove on. Had some trouble stoking up the stove. And its really cold at night. All this only adds to the experience. The main house is charming, authentically rustic and surprisingly well maintained. The keepers are friendly, available, and helpful. The grounds are an inviting, highly explorable mix of open fields, shady forests, gardens, and orchards. The location is 10 minutes drive from the town of Mendocino, and a lovely 15 minute walk thru the forest basin to a beautiful cove beach. I could not stop smiling the whole time I was there, and could imagine spending an entire relaxing week based solely at this retreat, exploring ocean beaches, coastal towns, and redwood forests. If you're the true outdoorsy type who just wants to enjoy the Mendocino coast without going the typical 4-star b&b route, I highly recommend this. read more

The Jughandle Creek Farm is a cute little guest house located across from the Jughandle State Reserve. Monica and Michael, the new care takers, were WONDERFUL and EXTREMELY FRIENDLY. We stayed upstairs in one of the bedrooms in the Farm House. They have a couple of private cabins and a campground. There is also a Nature Educational Center. The farmhouse has 3 shared bathrooms for all guests, shared living and dining areas, and a large shared kitchen for cooking. They have an organic garden which guests are free to pick from. Sheets and towels are included, bring your own warm bedding it gets cold at night. There is limited cell for phone service, so dont expect internet or phone calls, they have a payphone outside if needed. Fees are per person and extremely reasonable. This place was a great find, we loved our stay here. read more

My daughter and I stayed at the Jug Handle Creek Farm a few days ago and although we had a very nice stay, the only negative was that the proprietors were stingy with their Wi-Fi network and wouldn't share it. First, when I asked for the Wi-Fi password, Michelle said "we don't have Wi-Fi", but when I asked about the network that my phone found, called nonethere, she said that they get their Internet service by satellite and are limited to 25 GB per month. In this day and age, everyone expects Wi-Fi and innkeepers provide it. Not having Wi-Fi simply because the proprietors wouldn't share was galling for me, since I run a business and happened to need it the two days we were there, so no, I won't be going back. read more

My family and I stayed in the Farmhouse (built in the 1870's!) and absolutely loved it. The ocean is a short walk across the street and you're quite literally surrounded by beauty. Trying to convince my fiancée to have our wedding here... Be warned, it is COLD. They supply extra blankets but you may want to bring your own space heater or plan to keep the wood burning stove cranking the whole time. They also provide firewood! read more

Had the misfortune of having to deal with the manager of the property. Absolutely unpleasant lady who had no clue what customer service, professionalism, or class was. She didn't do her job as paid for or agreed upon...chairs and tables weren't set up as agreed upon. We had to "pick a lock", and load all 80 chairs and tables ourselves. She then has the audacity, after we do her damn job, to tell us if we don't put the chairs back she'll charge us for her time. That's ok, I make a lot more than her and will be sending her a bill for our time. Classes broad who made it an unpleasant experience. Wouldn't recommend this place to anyone, ever. read more

A few months ago, I got married at this location, and I couldn't be happier about our choice. A little bit about the place: it has beautiful pine trees all over, and is the first handicap camping ground in the united states! please note, however, that that was over 80 years ago, and the trails built for the wheelchairs are dilapidated, and it ISN'T a handicap campground anymore. there is a large meadow and another smaller one closer to the house - both are flat and beautiful... there is a large victorian farm house that can sleep 19-20 people and 3 cute cabins right next to it - you can sleep a lot of people here, or the camping ground can hold well over 100 people EASY. The victorian house is rustic and homely - please note that even though it's CHEAP, you are going to have to clean it - and i mean CLEAN it, or they will charge you a cleaning fee... the inn keepers (Michael and Monika) are delightful - I feel like we've gained a couple of friends there! There's a great trail leading to the beach - you have to go UNDER highway 1, or you can turn right and take the famous stairway trail. The farm is an entrance point to the JugHandle state farm - full of gorgeous trails and nature :) If you're planning an event in Mendocino, I highly recommend this spot. Also, this is a nature reserve, so your money will go to help maintain this beautiful spot, and not pad someone's pocket... read more

I camped on the property with a group of friends in preparation for an upcoming wedding to be held on site. The grounds were wonderful and include a nice trail leading to the nearby beach, and you don't have to cross Hwy 1 to get to it! There were wild turkeys, eagles, hawks and the beach is close enough to hear the sea lions barking in the morning. The garden is beautiful and we got to meet Linda, who showed us how to eat the right leaves from a fava bean plant, instruction us on how to cook them into eggs. The downside of camping was when one of the caretakers showed up around 1pm to ask if we were staying an extra night as check out was 11am. Check out for camping is at 11am?!?! No one I know of gets up, eats brekky, breaks camp and is out by 11am! So if you camp, be sure to discuss check out time. We were permitted to stay (eventually leaving at 5p) but it was uncomfortable. The house was quaint, but full of "do not" do this and that signs, making it feel a little bossy. Don't leave your bed like this; with photo. Do not flush toilet paper unless it's for #2. Do not smoke on the patio (OK, that' s a great rule). And if you get up often in the night to use the lavatory, they are downstairs across the creaky floors. I'm anxious to go back for the wedding and if you like quaint old homes or really nice camp grounds, be sure to check them out! read more

We rented out the Jug Handle for our wedding. We rented the house+ cabins on a Friday night and the whole place on the following Saturday a weekend in September. Factors in the decision: it was really affordable, many people could stay at the house, cabins, and camp, and the property was really quite charming. We were so happy that we choose the location. It helped that Saturday we had great weather. When looking for a wedding venue, we searched in San Francisco, around the bay area and Mendocino. My mom lives up in Mendocino and we went up to see her one weekend and check out places. We didn't have the Jug Handle on our list of places to check out that weekend, but I had seen the website, and when we were driving by we stopped there on a whim. The woman managing the property at that time was super sweet and let us look around. We loved the property, the pictures online at that time didn't do it justice. We also really liked that we would be giving our money to a non-profit that looked like it contributed to the community, as an alternative to feeling like we were just being gouged by renting a popular "wedding" venue. We were not looking for fancy. We were a little concerned when the management changed earlier this year, if the new people would be Ok and if rules would change. But things worked out really well. We corresponded with Michelle for questions, who answered emails promptly and Warren greeted us when we checked in Friday and was awesome. He was nice on Sunday too when were were scrambling to pack/clean up. They requested we rent a port-a-potty for the event, as there had been trouble before, Michelle said with a group of school children that clogged the pipes. It was our backup, but we didn't end up needing it. We used the large area downstairs in the house for drinks after the ceremony and later dancing, the area behind the house and the orchard for dinner. We had photos taken at the Jug Handle bluffs during the "golden hour" (there is a path from the property that goes under Hwy 1). We had many people stay in the house and cabins and a few people that went camping. We rented tables, chairs, heat lamps, lights from Matt Rowlands and the orchard was so pretty at night for tables for dinner for about 60 people. The house is old, but really cool and it was clean. It was a perfect venue for what we were looking for. Many people at the wedding commented on how nice the property was (we were so lucky it was a beautiful, clear weekend) read more

We stayed here for our honeymoon with our dogs last weekend. I'm not sure if we'd go back there again when we go there for our anniversary though. The manager told us they no longer allow dog guests in their cabins so we booked dry-tent-camping spot and nearly froze to death. Mendocino in July is winter in Bay area. We found the next day that some people were staying in one of the cabins with their dogs. What the fuck? I didn't bother confronting them as they probably had their reason for getting someone else (maybe their friends) in a cabin with dogs while they didn't want to accommodate us instead, even though I told them I am a professional dog trainer and our dogs are very well behaved. Their campground was spacious and quiet too. But...their outhouse is simply gross. We stayed away from the campground just so we don't have to use the outhouse often. It makes me want to throw up just thinking about their outhouse again. read more

If you are looking for something different than just booking any motel for your Mendocino getaway, this is your place! Book a cabin if you want some intimacy, we booked the Eucalyptus one, a rustic little place with one single bed and a double upstairs as well as the do-it-yourself fire place, and the bathroom and shower are to be shared in the Farm house. We almost regretted not booking in the Farm house for the real community experience, but we will be back! Yes, we did the mistake to believe that we could not put more wood in the fire before sleeping and woke up freezing but hey, dude, you could have though about it! We camped for two nights and it was fantastic. The setting is amazingly beautiful and peaceful. The camping area is set toward the back of the property from the cabins and farmhouse, so it feels like your own campground. This place is like a little slice of heaven. Its an old property, the original farmhouse was built in the late 1800's, I think. It has tons of charm, character and uniqueness. There are also little cabins in addition to the very large farmhouse. Further back on the property, there are camp spots and RV spaces. I could see having a family, work or large private event here would be amazing. The couple that run the property are exceptionally versed with the locals and are very helpful with proving information and suggestions. They have some amazing world travel stories to share as well. Don't expect all the bells and whistles of your modern BnB- there is NO WiFi - but that's part of the beauty of this place. This is a really special place. I booked the farmhouse and campground for a wedding last October and it was the perfect place for our wedding. We had a small ceremony/reception in the early afternoon at the farmhouse, then evening we opened it up to a camp out and pot luck. The property is beautiful and HUGE. So much fun staying there and we would like to go back for a weekend at some point. Was just here over the weekend with Jamie M. and loved it. Dealt with Gailen from start to finish; from making the reservation in mid-May for a July placement down to getting checked in and even getting some answers to questions about routes, hikes, jaunts, eateries and more in the area, he was tremendously helpful and seemed to be bonded to the place and what it is all about. The farm is just off the highway 1 headed North towards Fort Bragg. The area had a main farmhouse and several cabins only footsteps away. We stayed in the Orchard Cabin, which is about 30 extra footsteps from the farmhouse (I'm counting footsteps because Gailen initially told me over the phone that getting to the bathroom may take 5 minutes from the Orchard Cabin, the farthest cabin of them all from the farmhouse where restrooms and showers may be found; the walk is a mere minute at most). Orchard Cabin has two double beds, one on the ground and one on a left with a woodsy, comfy feel inside. Smells slightly of moth balls and has a heating cauldron of sorts with plenty of firewood. We used it on both nights and loved it. We also had a balcony which was on the ground level, not the loft level, and since it is fairly exposed to an open pasture, you probably want to keep your tom-foolery to a minimum there. Loved the farmhouse which contains a few distinct rooms that take you back in time to a Mendocino that is probably not too unlike modern Mendocino; rustic furnishings, chairs crowded around the heating stove, books, maps, a well-tuned piano, puzzles, large windows, and an upstairs area that I never got to explore (where the extra rooms are). There are 3 total restrooms, 2 of which have baths, so you'll rarely be waiting around for one unless it's an unusually busy time of day or year. Cabins don't have locks unless you're inside. I thought that was actually endearing; really means you can trust people who are around. And, you will definitely meet the requisite European traveler who seem to be at every type of hostel no matter where in the world. Our European traveler was a German man riding across the world on a motorcycle named Gabe; he had riden from Germany, down through Turkey, Iran, Pakistan and India and finally into Malaysia, where he "mailed" his bike to Los Angeles, and flew to it and came to Mendocino. Cool. So the cabin was $86 a night, which I think is the most expensive accommodation you can get there. That's it. Bring your food, use the facilities, go on hikes, and that's really all you have to pay. Huge steal if you want to stay in the Mendocino area (this particular plot of land resides in Caspar just before the Fort Bragg city limit), have your ocean view/access and want to relax. Highly highly recommended. read more

This isn't a hotel. This isn't a hotel. With that out of the way, they do rent out rooms to people for a very cheap price ($30/night for me)! Note that it's a couple who runs the place, so you can't check in any time you want. They told me I definitely had to check in before 8:30pm. Also, this farm has no cell phone coverage, so turn off your cell phone or they'll run out of power quick trying to figure a cell tower. Now that I've got the quirky stuff out of the way, I'll explain why I like it. First of all, it's dirt cheap. It's $30 per person per night. Most motels will run at like $60, and probably way more. Some rundown motel wanted to charge me $150 for a smoking double. Second of all, this place has so much character. It's like renting a room out of a house rather than getting a hotel room. Everything feels so homey and comfortable, I really dig that. The lady running the place was incredibly sweet and chatted with me about the area, recommending places to go and restaurants to eat at, and showed me her around her house and the various photos her husband had taken. The room I had was small, with two beds, but not cramped. The overall building was old but not rundown. Everything was very clean and comfortable. They provided towels, clean bed sheets and pillow cases, and shared access to the downstairs restrooms (none of the rooms seem to have private restrooms). They provide the sheets and pillow cases, but you have you make the bed, and then when you leave, take the sheets and pillow caes downstairs to the hampers, and then remake the bed. This place obviously isn't for everyone, and probably isn't for the typical yuppie vacationer visiting Mendocino, but it was right up my alley. I loved the place and would stay there again for sure. read more

This is quite the experience. Everybody is very friendly and the "vibes" of a place like this are pretty good. It has quite a romantic atmosphere. (We stayed in the farmhouse.) But you are paying 80 dollars a night for a tiny room with an old bed that you have to clean yourself. I guess it is just part of being in this expensive area. They don't take debit/credit cards. You have to physically mail them an envelope with a check in it to guarantee your reservation. I think they kind of enjoy being this "old fashioned". Such a wonderful place! Friendly folks & a great location. Michael, the person who runs hospitality there is super helpful and will answer any question you have. It has a kind of hostel-like feel w/ a bunch of great common space, friendly people always around, and a really nice and big common kitchen. The location is hard to beat -- within short walking distance to a wonderful little beach & a pygmy forest hike! And super close to Ft. Bragg that has a kind of whole foods-ish kind of supermarket (Harvest Market or something) so you can easily get groceries within a 5 minute drive or so. Also Eggheads, the breakfast spot in town, is really tasty & has a crazy amazing menu. What's not to love? I think it would be great as an individual get-away if you like hostels (and only $38/night for students for a private room & cheaper in the dorm!) It was also nice as a get-away for a couple, especially if you stay in the quaint cabins instead of the farm house. The cabins may not be for everyone, but my boyfriend and I really loved staying in the cabin ourselves & they're super clean and comfortable (they are a little small/outdoorsy & you have to start a fire in the wood stove, though Michael can show you how if you're unsure). Also, they run awesome ecology classes for kids, so it's great to support this friendly, positive place! read more

My husband and I stayed in a tiny rustic cabin here for our 3rd wedding anniversary last week. IT WAS AMAZING. Like others have noted, it is obviously not a fancy hotel and more like what I would consider an upscale hostel, but for us this was exactly the kind of unique and incredibly personal and natural experience that we love. All the little cabins have woodstoves and there was kindling, newspaper, and logs ready to make a cozy fire. We slept on a loft bed up wooden steps which was super warm and snuggly and perfect for a romantic get-away. The wonderfully historic and gorgeously maintained 140 year old farmhouse has a giant well-lit and well-stocked kitchen available for guest use and there is an organic garden from which guests can pick veggies and assorted herbs! There are clean bathrooms with wonderful showers and freshly washed color-coordinated (the little things mean a lot!) towels on tidy shelves. We roamed the property extensively and the campground looks spacious and secluded and absolutely beautiful. I would totally recommend this place for a family gathering or wedding. There were wild turkeys hanging out and all types of birds throughout the day. A nature camp for children was being held in a field and there is a nature library full of interesting books on science, natural history, and local flora and fauna available for guests' perusal. Best of all is the hike to the beach. It is less than a half mile away, a perfectly lovely hike through wildflowers and forest and then out into a private cove of sparkling turquoise water! You are also situated right smack dab between Fort Bragg and Mendocino for excellent eateries, a little bit of nightlife and tons of fun activities. We were explained that we have to leave all the doors and lights open (no intimacy!!!) and then when a big group arrived, they were all over the place and we just didn't know where to be to find a little peace and calm. What really bothered us is that we were not said it often happens that big groups book the place. This is a sweet little place just south of Ft Bragg/Glass Beach. We drove up 1 from San Francisco on our way to Montana so we were looking for the perfect road trip stop! This was definitely it. We got in late so our instructions were waiting for us (didn't have to wake anyone up). The cabin had a loft and a little wood stove, which we used. The communal kitchen is stocked with appliances, bring your own food. I would absolutely stay here again!! read more

We have been going to Jughandle for close to 30 years and love the farmhouse and the coast. The ecological staircase is a favorite hike. This year we learned that the policy on trash has changed and now visitors staying , especially groups, are expected to haul their own trash out. This seems to be so that the Center can claim a low impact status. This is my one complaint, as it seems disengenuous and very inconvenient. They do offer to haul the trash, if you are willing to pay extra. $25 per day plus a per-bag fee to take the trash about 5 miles to the landfill. If not for the new trash policy, this place deserves 4 or even 5 stars. read more

A grant funded, coastal venue with historical and natural rustic- beauty appeal. The main house is a darn good deal for a group, but I agree with other reviewers that the do and don't signage is excessive and that you must be your own maid after you have paid to stay seems a bit much. On the other hand, it is beautiful, relatively private, unique and relaxing retreat. Also, no pets allowed in the main house. Not sure if you can have them on the campground. If you are a Marriott type person you probably won't appreciate this diamond in the rough. Oh yes, please fix the pipes so that tp can be flushed without guilt. read more

We love Jug Handle Creek Farm! We've stayed in the farmhouse and cabins before- both fun and different. We are a family of four with 2 boys ages 8 and 12. The boys roam, explore and play on the beach for hours. The hike to the Pygmy forest is incredible. Michelle and Warren the caretakers are friendly and helpful. Warren even had the boys press apples from the orchard and make cider! We hiked to the bluff to watch the sunset which was breathtaking. We make it a point to come up to the farm annually. This is one of my favorite places on Earth. It's rustic, it's communal and you have to take care of yourself, but it's clean and peaceful and in a beautiful location. This is a Nature Center and a non-profit. This isn't a bed and breakfast. There is an amazing kitchen and you have the opportunity to share a big beautiful Victorian farm house with fellow travelers. Or you can stay in one of the cabins. It's bare bones and no frills, but in the middle of the redwoods, on the ocean, why would you need frills? It's totally amazing. Anyone giving this place a bad review doesn't understand or appreciate where they are. If you want a space to meditate and explore and adventure, the Jughandle is the place to go. read more

I am certainly a fan but this type of accommodation isn't for everyone. You have to make your own bed and then strip your own bed before you leave. There is no TV and no internet. It is time to truly relax which I appreciate! Since you are sharing the house, your stay hinges upon the other people in the house. If they are quiet or not. My room was spacious and clean. The location is great and the owner was cool. I will certainly be back. They also have "cabins" which look like sheds and you can camp out here too. read more

I really wanted to like Jughandle Creek Farm. We were excited to be able to have our dog with us there too. We read all about it on the website and had really high hopes, but it was weird from the first moment. To begin, there was no one there when we arrived less than an hour after check-in time, so we got our envelope that was full of rules not stated on the website or mentioned on the phone. Also there was a yoga retreat there that weekend that the woman I talked to a few days before didn't tell me about. So, we were explicitly not allowed in the Farmhouse except for the kitchen and were told that we would have to work around the yoga retreat's cook (she was very nice). The website says that cabin guests may use the outside bathroom and kitchen, but what they really mean is that you're NOT allowed to use any of the other communal areas. Our instruction packet said to check-in at the office after 9am the next day, but there wasn't anyone there then, nor for the rest of the time we stayed (two nights). We never got a key for the Eucalyptus Cabin where we stayed. The bed was the most uncomfortable I've ever slept on--I could feel the springs on my ribs and woke up with a sore back/shoulders. There are rules posted all over, including one that shows the correct way to make your bed before you leave. Seriously, they detail how to fold the blanket at the foot of the bed. There are rules about cleaning everything, even the bathroom floor if you get it too sandy. You have to put the sheets on your bed when you get there and take them off when you leave. Absolutely zero hospitality and we felt really unwelcome, like we were intruding because we weren't part of the yoga retreat. Yes, Jughandle is beautiful, but you don't have to stay there to go on the awesome hikes. There are plenty of comparably-priced places in the area that also allow dogs and have much better customer service and beds that don't hurt. read more

I stayed in the Eucalyptus cabin where I got feverishly ill from dust mites and no ventilation. The staff refused to return my money even though I stayed only one night and paid for 2. The loft mattress and the mattress below puffed up dark clouds of filth when I sat down. If hadn't been close to dusk I would of left but I was new to the area so I didn't know that there were lots better places to stay down the road. Whatever they used to clean the place had such a horrible chemical smell and I couldn't open the windows to ventilate the cabin which was freezing because it was not built to standards. I was shocked to see there was only a hook and eye for a closure on the door. I was the only one on the property except for the 2 caretakers. There was no security. No cell phone service and only one bathroom a 2 min. walk from the cabin. If you don't stay in one of the cabins you have to pay them $8.00 to use the one bathroom shower so I can't imagine when the whole campground is booked how that works out. Maybe a very long line? For the average camper who doesn't want to use an outhouse when nature calls I would suggest to book at a real campground down the road with rangers and bathrooms and plugs in and cell service. Our local bike guide service reserved the camp ground for up to 300 bike racers and was told two days before the event that no one could use their showers. Do not use these people for camping. read more

Great place. Beautiful location. I only give it 3 stars because I don't think the price structure is fair. They charge 40 dollars a person. Couples pay 80 despite using only one bedroom. People with kids are going to pay a lot. This is not family friendly. Also, some of the mattresses are really bad, like the queen on the north side. There is no heat and it does get cold upstairs. They should be charging 50 dollars for couples and 60 for a family of four, in my opinion. read more

went there...suppose to stay 2 nights...horrid cabin...dirty kitchen...signs freaking everywhere ...and what is with having to put new sheets on the bed and leave it "exactly" as found? the kitchen was a place I would never store or cook food in....sorry...not worth going back to. wish I could leave negative stars... read more
