I'm back in Chicago now and the one thing I miss the most about New York is Juice Generation. Their Acai Bowls are to die for! You can also customize their pre-made bowls. For some reason, I don't like strawberries in my acai bowls and they always let me replace them for blueberries or bananas for no extra cost. The acai bowls here are definitely a little small for $12, but honestly worth it. I personally loved the PB Acai, Aloha Acai, and Protein Revolution. Unfortunately, when you order their juices the juice doesn't seem to go all the way up to the top of the cup. Took a couple friends here and when they ordered juices they were kind of disappointed that they paid $8.95 for juice that didn't fill the cup. So minus one star for that. I've come to this popular franchise a few times now, since it's on my way to work. Small clean place without seating, so it's just a stop and go. They have all these fresh juice combinations and smoothies. They also have a bunch of fridges filled with other health drinks, like an actual shaved and packaged coconut for $5. They also have some healthy protein bars, acai bowls, etc. Basically this is the place for a healthy snack or lunch on the go. It's not the cheapest place, but healthy-based smoothie businesses rarely are. Fruit, in general, is expensive these days! So I have gotten their lower calorie options, like the watermelon dragon for about $8. Only 190 calories. He asked if I wanted sweetener, so I said just a little agave. Really tasty and refreshing! Glad I ordered it. I have also tried their XO coco, which is really good. I want to try more of their lower calorie options now that summer is right around the corner. I'm visiting from California, and I'm obsessed with acai bowls - so just know this as I write this review! I judge acai bowls by a few things: acai consistency, toppings, & taste. I asked for a thicker acai bowl, but the consistency was still pretty watery. Felt like drinking a smoothie instead of an acai bowl. The toppings are ok - bananas, strawberries, granola. I asked separately for honey because it doesn't come on the bowl - they'll add it for you for no extra charge! The ingredients tasted fresh, at least it didn't taste that watered down even though the consistency was watery. The location is awesome because it's right by Central Park, so I ate the acai bowl in the park and that was nice. Bowl was meh, but can't be that choosey when you're in the big city! If I can afford this place on a daily basis, I would come here all day every day. I always feel a fraction healthier by simply stepping into the store, as the place smells like freshly pulverized fruits and vegetables in the best way possible. Just as the name suggests, they specialize in juicing veggies and fruits into one of the elixirs on the wall menu, made to order. I appreciate their willingness to customize the drinks upon request - I asked for less ginger in one of my juices and they were able to do so. Not only can you get your daily greens the lazy way, they also offer healthy "shots" (wheat grass, bee pollen, etc) and a "juice farmacy" (served warm). Their salads and sandwiches are also tasty and very expensive. I enjoy their avocado kale salad, as each kale leaf is coated with pureed avocado so that the zesty lemon dressing is optional. The best part about Juice Generation, in my opinion, is their DELICIOUS acai bowls, which are too rare in the city! I crave them all day every day. My favorite is the Amazing Green, which they blend frozen acai berries with spinach, kale, and almond milk into a dense, smoothie-like concoction, then top it with bananas, hemp seeds, and hemp granola. Hooray for fiber, protein, antioxidants (and a small slice of San Diego)! They also make the other bowls, which have different fruit toppings, deliciously well. Reminds me of home. Kinda. My parents used to own a cafe - a health cafe - and one of their "best sellers" was the wheatgrass (yuck!) - my mom always made me take a shot. Literally tastes like grass. And the organic, super healthy, protein shake, super green smoothies. Walking into this place, brought me back. They make the yummiest smoothies and (expensive) organic, vegan foods. From the few business classes I took in the midst of completing my Master's degree, I know a few things about why food establishments price their food the way they do. They have their bottom lines to fill. Still, that does not mean I'm happy about paying a minimum of $7 for a juice that's the same size of a tall drink at Starbucks. As I've recently gotten a job that requires I maintain my figure I decided to step into Juice Generation for a post-workout meal. Healthy with a calorie board? Count me in. I've had acai bowls back in Hawaii and I loved them, so I was excited to try the offerings they had here. I came in around 10:00 in the morning and the place was PACKED. Easily a dozen people were in line before me, but the guys running the machines were passing out smoothies and juices at an incredible speed. Unfortunately this location had no seating, so we were all sort of standing in a penguin type huddle as we waited for our orders. The crowd is what you'd expect. A lot of workout clothes and Trader Joe's bags. I wound up getting the amazing green acai bowl and it was pretty painful considering it was about $11. That really got my hopes up. Something that expensive has got to be good, right? As I waited for my order I noticed that no one had ordered this type of bowl, there were only peanut butter acai bowls going out. This worried me. When I finally got my order about 20 minutes later I noticed that the bowl was not green like the picture on the website implied, but more of a cement color. Yum. As there was no seating I decided to trek back to my apartment to taste what I'd gotten, and after another 20 minutes I finally sat down and started digging in. Weird. You can REALLY taste the kale in this specific bowl, it was actually jarring. Like, it made the entire bowl bitter. The blueberries and bananas couldn't even help and I wound up pouring a few tablespoons of honey on top of it. It didn't help much. This specific bowl was just a complete miss and mess. Not only did it look unappetizing, but it also had an awful taste. I wound up being unable to finish it and tossed about half of the bowl in the trash. "Amazing green" is not an apt name for this dish, it's more "mediocre and muddy". I don't think I'd go back to Juice Generation again, at least not at this particular location for that particular acai bowl. It was pricey and just not that good. But maybe the peanut butter acai is better? I guess we'll see if I try it out again. read more

After waking up feeling super sick today, I got my butt out of bed & headed straight to Juice Generation, seeking anything with antioxidants and vitamin C to help me feel better. I ordered the Citrus Super C juice (pineapple, grapefruit, orange, mint) and the XO Coco açai bowl (açai, banana, coconut oil, almond milk, strawberries, coconut shavings, hemp granola) from the counter. I also picked up a Vital Shot (ginger, lemon, cayenne pepper) from the fridge. The service was super quick and friendly. The Citrus Super C juice was super fresh and tasty --I feel as though I drank that thing in under 5 minutes. I highly recommend ordering this if you're suffering from a sore throat (as I was) or cold. My favourite of the order was definitely the XO Coco açai bowl. Everything tasted super fresh and I felt as though I was eating a dessert, but it was healthy for me (who doesn't love that?!). This is my favourite açai I've had in NYC to date. I think this would be an excellent choice for anyone looking to satisfy a sweet tooth the healthy way. The Vital Shot, as I expected, is suuuuper strong and made my face pucker from a tiny sip. I definitely don't recommend giving this a try for kicks. Buy this if you're feeling congested or sleepy --it'll definitely give you a kick and clear up the sinuses! A little pricey (I make my own acai bowls all the time, so I know that the ingredients are expensive but I still think JG's is a few more dollars than it should be) but it was so, so delicious. I had the coco acai bowl which is acai blended with coconut milk and banana, and topped with coconut flakes bananas and hemp granola. the hemp granola is AMAZING. The acai bowl is sweeter than I'm used to which may be because the coconut milk is sweetened or if they use the sweetened version of sambazon's acai...44g of sugar is still a little high in my opinion. Everyday I drink 2 of the spicy lemonades one before breakfast and before bed and I love them! Unlike their 72nd Street spot, this JG is spacious and much easier to manage with a stroller. The service is efficient, the store is spotless and the offerings are all delicious. I'm a big fan of "Get Ur Green on " and "I Love Watermelon" in particular, but I've never really been disappointed by anything I've ordered. Even my 11-month old claps her hands and opens her mouth when we walk in, signaling that she wants me to empty straw-fulls into her mouth. Plus- JG uses local and organic (when possible), which matters to me. You know what they don't use? Those obnoxious styrofoam cups that Jamba prefers (what is it, 1991?). You can also get young coconuts here and a great selection of gluten-free treats. Oh, and I'm over whining about expensive juices. You get what you pay for. Some lucky people win the lottery multiple times. But the really lucky people, like me, have Juice Generation forget about their order multiple times. Let me tell you of my fortunes. This Juice Generation is my go-to location as it is very close to my gym and I love their chocolate protein knockout. Considering the high volume of customers at this location near Columbus Circle, I think they do a good job of getting people the right orders pretty quickly. So when they forgot my order on a busy Saturday a couple months back, I had forgotten about it by the time I was out the door. Fast forward to today, as I place my usual protein knockout order and stand off to the side to wait while it's mixed. I see the person who ordered after me get their smoothie. No biggie, I think, maybe it was just quicker to make. Then the next person, the next, the next... you know where this is going. It wasn't an especially busy day, so after a few minutes I'm the only customer left in the store. I'm standing there, the cashier is standing there, the crew is standing there (except the one guy checking out the tip jar). We're all standing there. Any second, I'm thinking, they're going to wonder why this guy is standing there and no one is blending anything. Any second, any sec"uh hi, did you forget about me?" Tip jar guy jumps like he just took a Solange Knowles to the face, and eventually my 20-minute visit to Juice Generation is complete. I know no one is perfect. Heck, I surprise myself every day in terms of how increasingly far from perfect I get. But I would recommend a more advanced system of keeping track of orders than what appears to be little slips of paper as of now. And if you do miss somebody, offering one of those little mini doughnuts for free would be a nice gesture. I haven't given up on JG yet, but hey Nutribullet, you lookin good. read more

I had the almond butter acai bowl and, don't get me wrong, it was really good. It was sweet, flavorful, and the toppings were super tasty (I swapped coconut for cacao nibs). However, it is just HOW sweet it was that worries me. I'm wondering if they use sweetened milk in them. I make acai bowls at home and they are never that sweet. That sweetness made it taste amazing, but also like it may not actually be healthy. The list of ingredients leads me to believe that it is healthy, but if the milk is sweetened and the granola is loaded with honey, then it may fulfill my daily dose of sugar for the day.
