I've taken 4-5 vintage dresses to Silhouettes and Profiles, and they have been tailored to perfection every time. Their prices are also pretty good for what I've seen in Manhattan. Each of my dresses required shortened straps and waists taken in, costing no more than $35 total per dress. The same alterations at other reputable tailors might have a STARTING price of $35. They also have a clear love of vintage clothing and they treat vintage pieces with care. When Irene realized I was a repeat customer, she showed me other pieces she was mending - many of them Edwardian and they looked brand new. 5 New shirts required tailoring, as my back is smaller than my front -- otherwise, I look like a house if the shirt is not fitted. The tailoring here is meticulous and customized to exactly what needs to be fixed. The ladies who work here are lovely. Prices will be higher than the dry cleaner, but worth the quality. They can address tough problems and work with expensive garments. Prices are fair. Insider's Tip: Plan ahead. They are often busy, especially around wedding season. I've been going to Silhouettes and Profiles for years and have never stopped being awed by Irene's and Anna's great care, skill, and artistry. An unreturnable skirt I bought had a waistband several inches too small--the complicated and beautiful piece was remade to fit exactly, with its appearance unchanged and the repair invisible. They were able to help me add some unique customizations to my dress (added buttons to turn my off the shoulder dress into a convertible strapless dress for dancing). For any clothing alteration, I will only trust Silhouettes and Profiles and highly recommend this place for any kinds of clothing alteration, especially if you have very valuable clothing. In 2018, after reading the article from New York Magazine about Silhouettes and Profile I brought my very expensive Galvan gown for the alteration to attend Philadelphia Orchestra Annual Gala (I needed someone not only I could trust but also looking for someone who had knowledge about alteration for the gown for a white tie event). I met Anna and she was the perfectionist and she knew how to fix in order to enhance or make the clothing better. Since then whenever I have a new dress for the important event, I bring my clothing to Anna for a better fitting/ alteration. I recently brought 2 dresses (my Oscar de la Renta wedding gown and Galvan London wedding dress for the reception) to Anna for alteration for my wedding this June 2022 and I am super happy and excited that Anna and Irene are taking care of my dresses. Today I got my wedding dress back from Anna and Irene and these 2 ladies made my dream come true dresses! I am floored by my experience with this place. I used this service about 5 times. Of those 5 times, I called or texted for an appointment and 3 of those times the receptionist had not written down my appointment and was hostile to me when I walked in. While I was flabbergasted by the attitude of this young woman, they did a good job and the tailor I worked with, Irene, was accommodating and did a good job. IN two subsequent visits Irene was out so I worked with another tailor who was hostile about everything I was trying to get tailored. It was bizarre to treat a customer with hostility who is simply trying to get her tailoring just right. I came in with a dress a week ago and the hostile woman fitted me I wasn't thrilled with her attitude but figured she might be having a bad day and I left. I came in again 4 days ago with two more items and this time not only had my appointment not been written down but the same tailor was once again so hostile while I was trying to get the first item fitted that I decided to not even give her the second item. When i was leaving I asked the receptionist who we could fix the communication issue so I don't once again come in for an appointment that wasn't recorded and she in a very hostile tone said "you were 15 minutes late". I said "wow you all are really hostile here so let's just finish these items and I"ll find another place". Today I received a text from Irene telling me that they would not be finishing the items I had left and that she would "mail me my clothes". They have had my clothes for over a week, they aren't competent enough to write down appointments, they are hostile when a customer is trying to get their clothes fit just right and then they hold clothes without finishing them. I came to Silhouettes for help with two wedding dresses in November 2018. One dress I purchased at the Glamour Closet to act as my main wedding dress. My second outfit was a skirt borrowed from a friend and a top also purchased at Glamour Closet. For my main wedding dress, the team at Silhouettes did a great job shortening the train and creating a beautiful bustle. They also fitted the bodice like a glove and tightened the straps, taking care to work with the intricate beading. For my second outfit, they shortened the skirt borrowed from my friend and added additional pickups. They also did an OUTSTANDING job figuring out how to rework the too-small top I purchased into something great. I gave them free-reign to figure it out since it was my secondary outfit and they came up with a FABULOUS fix. They added a fabric panel at the back, overlayed with tulle to match the fabric in the top, and created an extended silhouette in the front to accommodate my bustline. This is my first review on Yelp, and I am writing because of how sheerly horrible my experience was at this business. I have never in my life had a worse experience at a tailor. I came to silhouettes after a recommendation from a close friend, who raved about them. I brought a long gown to be altered for an event that was taking place in one week, and the dress was not ready until the day of the event. I asked for the dress to be hemmed and for the zipper to be fixed. As I was rushing to get ready for the event, I didn't have time to try on the dress in the shop. When I put on the dress before the event, the zipper was entirely crooked and the entire back of the dress was ruined. I had to wear the dress to the event with the crooked zipper. After the event, I went back to the store and asked for them to fix it and give me a refund. They had charged me $140 with no breakdown of which alteration cost what on the receipt. They made me try on the dress to show them what was wrong instead of taking me at my word. Then, they had the audacity to write over the receipt in pencil (I saw them do this) that the zipper alteration was $40 and the hemming was $100. My original receipt had no such breakdown. They still only refunded me $40. They never apologized for the mistake that they made. Then, I went back to pick p the dress that they had since fixed and explained to them how unpleasant the entire experience was. Kristina, the younger woman at the store, began yelling at me, asking me what exactly was "unpleasant" about the experience (she used air quotes when speaking to me). I told them that they never apologized for the fact that I had to wear a broken dress to a major event, and she took no responsibility, saying I should have assumed they were sorry because they offered to fix the dress they had ruined. These ladies are rude, unprofessional, and flat out dishonest. Do not go here. read more

The alterations to my wedding gown were to be done by the seamstress recommended (read: essentially forced to use) by the bridal salon where i purchased my wedding gown (NOT SILHOUETTES AND PROFILES!) 1 week before our wedding day the dress was finally "ready". When I arrived for final fitting/ pick up the dress Everything we had discussed and agreed on was not done and the dress was completely wrong - to say she had nearly DESTROYED the dress was the understatement of the century!!! After scouring the internet all night to find the best places in New York to salvage this type of situation - i found SILHOUETTES AND PROFILES. They absolutely saved the day, essentially starting the alterations from scratch and making sure I had enough time to come in for a second fitting (within the 5 day window they had to work with). I cannot express my gratitude enough to everyone at S&P. They are unbelievable at their craft and could not be more pleasant and accommodating to ensure their clients feel comfortable and happy with the final product. Six months after our wedding day, I will still receive compliments about how beautiful my dress was and how it complimented my figure perfectly (thanks to S&P!!). I brought a sport jacket in to be shortened in both body length and sleeves. A tailor whom I had worked with for 20 years closed and Silhouettes was recommended to me. It seems like they predominantly cater to women. That's not an issue but does have the feel of a dressmaker more than a men's tailor. The quality of the work of generally good, but no better than I would have expected from a professional. The price though was nearly double what I had come to expect for men's tailoring. So their pricing seems oriented to (unfortunately) the higher prices women typically pay for similar services. Also, they promised the jacket for a date that was hardly a rush -- nearly three weeks after drop off. I had intended to use the jacket for an event the evening of the agreed pick-up day but when I went to pick it up I was told they needed another week. I have other sport coats so it wasn't the end of the world and, as I said, I'm happy enough with the work. But all things considered, I'd say they are only OK. read more

Incredibly Rude Service. They are thankless and do not value their customers. There are very few tailors in the area. So they have a monopoly of sorts. They treat customers as horribly as they want knowing that there are few alteration options nearby. They are incredibly expensive and will quote you a different price for the same type of alteration each time you visit. They only accept cash and check. No credit cards. My brother is a super smart lawyer. But, sometimes, he does some dumb ass stuff. He's the guy who would accidentally put the milk in the cabinet and the cereal in the fridge when we were younger. Now, he is an adult. Now, he zippers his outer jacket into his sweatshirt. You probably re read that last sentence a few times. You kind of have to, because hearing it once makes no sense. What...how....what....huh? He was wearing a winter jacket and he goes to zipper it, but instead of attaching one side of the jacket to the other, he attached it to his inside layer, which was some type of sweatshirt. Luckily, somehow, he has a live in girlfriend. God bless her. She helped him lift the jacket up over his head so that he could take it to Silhouttes and Profiles and get it taken care of. He walks in, they laugh at him, obviously. They are confounded. They have never seen anything of the sort. They were challenged. Like many greats before them, they rose to the challenge. Using nothing but a dental tool (yep) they were able to pull apart these two zippers. I want to give them five stars. Without them, I would have to worry about my dear older brother freezing to death. Thank you. read more

THIS PLACE IS AWESOME! Granted, I've only been here once. I actually went to have the sleeves shortened on a coat. Now this wasn't just any coat, it's the coat my husband got me for our one-year anniversary back in September and it is hands-down the nicest (and priciest) coat I've ever owned. I was terrified to get it tailored! Let me tell you, though, S&P did right by me. The alteration is PERFECT, and I couldn't be happier. I will definitely be returning there for all alterations on my most treasured items. If you want to know how I chose S&P, I actually read an article online and found out that S&P did all of the alterations for the movie Black Swan. If it's good enough for Natalie and Mila, I figured it was probably good enough for me! Oh, and just so you know, they only take cash and checks. I had a terrible experience, and I will not be returning here. I've taken away a star for each of my complaints. They are as follows: 1. They have poor customer service, and are rude and impatient. 2. They are unprofessional and do not follow agreed upon deadlines. Instead, they send you a text message notification when your items are ready (this would be convenient, if it weren't days after the date on which you previously agreed). 3. They are expensive. And only take cash or check. 1. POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE AND RUDE: When I initially called to make an appointment, the woman on the phone gruffly told me that they were overbooked, with a tone of exasperation at even taking my appointment. Still, she booked me in. During my appointment, they constantly they rolled their eyes and made exasperated, impatient comments, stressing that they were overbooked. At first, the seamstress took up the straps too much, and when I asked her to release them she rolled her eyes and argued that it would be too big in the chest with longer straps, rather than making the straps a comfortable length and adjusting the chest to fit after. Only after I argued with her did she agree to do this. When I complained about the dress coming too high under my arms with the shortened straps, she loosened the straps a hair and then looked at me expectantly, but did not offer any other solutions or make any other alterations. 2. UNPROFESSIONAL AND UNPUNCTUAL: On my initial phone call, despite her complaints, the woman on the phone assured me that they would be able to alter my maid of honor dress for an upcoming wedding in a timely manner. During my appointment, despite their complaints, they again confirmed that they would be able to alter my dress in a timely fashion. I notified them of my event date and saw the receptionist write it down. I even offered to pick up the dress at a later date from the few other clothing items I had brought, as I had come well in advance of my event. They agreed and barely thanked me. I went to pick up my dress yesterday (a day later than we'd agreed upon) and it was still not ready. Luckily, I am neurotic and had scheduled my pick up for a week before my event, because otherwise I would have been one panicked bridesmaid. Additionally, they are closed for the majority of the next week due to a holiday, so they had to rush my dress for today-- and I had to cancel a weekend away to pick it up on time before the wedding. When I finally picked up the dress today, they made no apology. For being so clearly overbooked, you'd think they would turn away customers that they knowingly can not accommodate. Instead, they overbook even more and then do not have items ready by clear deadlines. 3. $$$$$ I paid $308.00 for 3 items with minor alterations: my dress, which was hemmed and straps shortened (it needed more, but that was all they were willing to do with their busy schedule), a second dress that was hemmed, and a skirt that was taken in (poorly--it's very obvious where they removed fabric and does not sit right). I will say, they did a great job on the hem of my maid of honor dress and kept the train a perfect length. Good job there. That said, for how much I paid, I did not get my money's worth. They sped through alterations that could have been improved with a little patience, they were rude and argumentative, and they did not have my items ready on time. That is 3 strikes for me, and I will not be returning. For those who do choose to use silhouettes and profiles, my tip would be to go with EXACTLY the specific alterations you need in mind so you are prepared to advocate for them. Also request your items be ready FAR in advance and before you actually need them. Also bring cash or check and be prepared to spend. read more

I had my wedding dress tailored in Boston, and when it arrived -- "finished" -- the Sunday before the wedding, the bodice didn't fit properly. I bought special undergarments on Monday hoping those would help, and on Tuesday, found S&P. I brought it all to Irene, in tears, who took a long look and promised she could fix it. She exactly understood the shape and look I was going for, so we ditched the undergarments and she suggested extensive alterations to the bodice: cutting away extra fabric at the armholes; lifting the straps; bringing in the bodice at the side seams; and adjusting the back lace. She also retacked ruched lace on the front bodice to make it more elegant. After she explained the work she would do, I asked her to make another alteration to the skirt - a "nice to have" fix in my mind, but one that made an incredible difference on the look of the overall dress. They completed the work in just three days, at a price that floored me, given the short timeframe and extensive work. The staff were so lovely and kind, which meant a lot during the stressful week-of-wedding time. I don't know what I would have done without them. Highly recommend! read more

I brought a massive bridesmaids dress in to get the length shortened, bodice tightened, and straps shortened. I trusted them to do what they needed to do for the pinning etc. What I got back was just as boxy and hideous as before, albeit a bit shorter. One strap even was still falling off. They also only took cash and were a bit sassy about me paying with Paypal. I brought to another tailor to fix (Alteration Specialist of NY) and they did a much better job...it just sucks I had to pay twice for a dress I'll only wear once :) read more
