I really wanted to love this place. It's a cute little house restaurant with very friendly staff. The food is just not it. As others have mentioned it is bland. The fried chicken (my primary reason for coming by) had no seasoning as far as I could tell. The sides were also bland. Like, not even enough S&P kind of bland. The chicken was very good, but the beef tips and rice were my favorite. The green beans has plenty of flavor and the tea was great. The barbecue was good as well. I do wish they had Mac and cheese every day. I did not get to try this. read more

Julia's Talley House is pretty much the best food you can get in Troutman, for good reason in my opinion. If your every in the Lake Norman/Troutman area the Talley House should be on your bucket list. The atmosphere I think is amazing, making you really feel like your in your grandmothers house and she's about to cook you some soul food. The salad has always been up to par, with fresh green lettuce and fresh tasting vegetables. The fried chicken has always been great, but not the best. I don't know what it is but their vegetables have always tasted like medicine, they've just got some aftertaste that I don't like, that has been consistent and needs to be looked into. Their biscuits are fluffy and buttery, tasting way better than pillsbury lol. Dessert is always homemade, my personal favorite is the chocolate pie. That homemade cool whip on top is amazing. Sweet tea is delicious, and tables are always clean. Every server I've encountered at the Talley House has been fantastic, always welcome to give refills and take away our plates. The food was not good at all. The chicken had no flavor, green beans tasted like dumped from can and barely warmed, no seasonings at all. The bread was dry dry dry. Where the rails were for the food trays to slide down was nasty. Food laying on the floor and it had just opened. Dessert was yuck. Doughy canned peach cobbler. Corn and pinto beans were good. About as close to Sunday brunch at Grandma's as you can get in a restaurant. It's located in an old house in downtown Troutman and has plenty of charm. There are a couple dining options and we chose the family style meal which ended up being a bit pricey for 4 adults. The meal came with fried chicken, ham and country style steak plus a huge assortment of veggies and cobbler for dessert. The food was plentiful and we each had a different favorite. The fried chicken and ham were delicious. None of us cared for the country style steak which tasted a bit like a TV dinner (showing my age). All of the vegetables were delicious. The sweet tea was perfect. The server was very friendly and helpful. Our glasses were never empty in spite of the big crowd. We'll go back! read more

Lost it's touch but still OK Ben here for lunch or dinner for over 10 years. Normally very good but of late, has been slipping. My wife and I went for lunch after Church about a week ago. Have dined here a number of time over the years and always felt in touch with the cuisine. Last couple of time, less and less so. Last Sunday after Church we went over to Julia's. First and foremost, the food and cuisine were good but compared to years past, a definite slide has occurred Arrived right around 11 am and went through the cafeteria line. School line revisited. Order Fried Chicken, white which turned out to be the best item of the meal. The okra was under cooked and mussy while he masked potatoes,while edible, did not offer anything in terms of contrasts in flavor or textures. When we first came here,almost 20 years ago, this was home cooking with distinct flavor and texture. It was very good but you've lost it. Time to return to basics and roots and quess what???... people will flock to that. read more

"Hidden Gem Alert"... Road warriors in the Charlotte area the Talley House is a must stop. I had the fried chicken, mash potatoes and green beans. The chicken was crispy and juicy and mash potatoes were velvety smooth. I ordered the green beans because my mother's voice was screaming in my head that I needed something green on my plate. This is southern comfort food at its best. The staff is friendly and the prices are extremely reasonable to cheap eats. I believe I spotted a bunch of people redirecting food network producers to alternate restaurants just to keep this spot to locals. Remember to wear your eating pants. read more

Hmm... I've been here twice now. This place is supposed to be something along the lines of southern "mom's home cookin" but it really falls short even of that. I was born in the south and I've lived here my whole life but my mother cooks much better than this. The corn and greens are obviously from a can, the meats are rather dry and I once had a piece of cake that had sat out on the bar so long it dried out an got hard on one side. Even mom knows that if you leave a piece of cake out it should at least be covered by plastic wrap. And I know everybody hates when food sitting on a bar forms that filmy layer on it. Staff is overall nice and attentive. The old house is also pretty cool and adds that old country feel, especially when the floor boards creek. But these aren't points that will keep me coming back. read more

The Talley House has been apart of my life for 25+ years and I couldn't imagine visiting Troutman/Statesville without it.... My grandmother, Shirley Shaver has lived in this area her entire life. As good grand daughters do they make time to visit. We always come here for lunch after church. It's just what we've always done and I don't plan on ever changing it. The love that it is located in a family owned house. Makes you feel as your eating @ someone's house rather than a restaurant. Two story, quaint house, with a large front porch for doing some serious rocking! Inside you self serve with a cafeteria style routine. Once you have your tray full, you pay @ the end of the line and seat yourself. The food is always southern, tasty. In my opinion I call it "soul food" because it always makes you feel good. It was kind of hard to rate this place. The food really leans to a two.five or three. It's buffet with pretty good fried chicken (only fried) and decent ham and chicken fried steak (not attempted). Sides are the traditional casseroles, mashed potatoes and tasteless green beans. But I love the authenticity of this traditional southern buffet out of a page from history. Wonderful staff, timeless atmosphere, family seating, great house and even the customers seem to be there right from central casting. The atmosphere and fried chicken earn the stars. read more

Went in today after a long hiatus, they have a buffet that includes fried chicken, meatloaf (once it's gone you're out of luck) and a beef stew. They have various vegetables, peas and carrots I still say from a can, corn, a cabbage casserole etc some desserts like a peach pie..it's good, I have to salt and pepper most of the food lol its a good place if you want quick and good value. read more

Not a horrible place and back in the day it was a really good place and always packed. However yesterday and a couple weeks ago it was at best a c rated eatery. The chicken breast was tiny and over cooked and the potatoes were runny the country style steak was actually burned black on the sides and the okra was soggy. The winner though was the cabbage casserole it was extremely good. The biscuit we received was actually yesterday's hard and dry. The service was okay and the tiny cups of tea were good. This is simple country cooking but mediocre. Things need to change. Please care more and try a lot harder. We want you to survive. read more

We come here every year as part of our family lake trip. After reading some of the more recent reviews, we were nervous about coming back with new management. We decided to risk it and the gamble completely paid off. Food was served family style and was absolutely amazing. Our waitress was extremely friendly and very quick at ensuring our drinks were full and our plates were never empty. We all waddled out front for a family photo - the hostess was more than kind in taking our photo. The only hangup was the fact that they don't have an ABC license, so we couldn't drink the wine we brought with us. But that was only a minor thing. read more

The fried chicken was equivalent to grocery store fried chicken. The broccoli casserole was merely frozen broccoli (over soft) with processed cheese too generously applied. It was not a casserole at all. Corn was frozen, reheated, bland. Fried okra, frozen, not seasoned. Mashed potatoes are instant. Pecan pie, frozen. Iced tea was decent. I had really hoped to get a great small town southern food experience, and I was rooting for these folks. I wonder if years ago they did actually cook. $35 for 2 meals was too much based on quality, otherwise I would not have complained. Total protein purchased, 3 pieces of chicken four sides 2 iced teas. Portions are generous, but you don't want to eat them. Sadly I have to say....don't go. :(.
