I used to love juniors. I have been maybe 20+ times. My friends and I come here every weekend, get a few drinks, dance, and tip the DJ. Last night, the bouncer was extremely hostile. He scans my (obviously real) ID and says "nope I can't let you in." I laughed as I thought he was joking and he said he was serious. I asked why, and he said my ID was a "potential fake." I offered to show my passport and my federally issued Native American ID card. I had plenty proof I was of age but he didn't care to see any of it. I was cordial, but honestly a bit dumbfounded as I was there the previous weekend. A bartender came out and said he can call the cops. I can't emphasize how hostile and rude these men were when I have been nothing but a good patron in juniors. I have never once been turned away with my ID. I had to leave with my group of about 10 people, so that is good business they missed out on. I can confidently say I will not be back due to the bouncers hostility and rudeness. Mind you the bar was completely empty, and when we asked why he kept saying it's because of the new law that passed, and when I asked what law he couldn't even tell me. New ownership and a total remodel and facelift. This place is great. This is one of those times that you hate to leave a 5 star review because you are afraid that if too many people catch on it will be forever full and you won't be able to get in. With that said, if you are lucky enough to come in on a night when Scott is working you will receive top notch service, endless wisdom, a deep well of music and movie knowledge, and maybe a great dad joke or two. Some of the group grabbed a booth, since there were 6 of us and the booth only allowed for 4, 2 of us went and hit up the pin ball machine. Junior's is a small but nice place to relax in a calmer than usual atmosphere, you don't have to yell over the jukebox or noise of the crowd. It also has the feel of a stereotypical movie bar where you walk in and the bar tender's wiping glasses behind the counter. Small groups of friends clustered at tables and a few people at the bar with cold mugs of beer making small talk about the news of the day. It was a bit on the pricey side, least on Saturday night, but not too bad. I've seen worse but Saturday is definitely not the discount beer night; but I do like that they keep the glasses on ice before pouring you some beer. For some reason quite a few men in my life are regulars here. I join them from time to time, either during the lunch hour or for a quick after-work drink. This is definitely a local's kind of a bar, dive-y and unpretentious. Noone's here to impress, and the interior's nothing special. It's a small place with the bar and 2 or 3 vinyl booths in the front, and a few random seats in the back next to the lone pool table. In my experience Barb is the best bartender as far as attitude, attentiveness and efficiency. No booth service, so you'll need to get up and order at the bar. Drinks are cheap and people are weird. There's a small patio out front where smoking is permitted. It kind of reminds me of Lucky 13's patio--ugly black wrought iron tables and chairs. Despite its appearance, though, it is a nice stretch of 300 S for people-watching. But in my opinion the better people-watching happens inside the bar. I can say with certainty that among the regulars are newscasters, journalists, convicted criminals, attorneys, computer geeks and at least one private investigator. So if that's your sort of thing, and it's definitely mine, grab a seat at the bar and chat up the patron next to you. Who knows what you'll find. read more

This was one of the biggest let downs I've had in a while. I've been meaning to try this place, due to the reviews of good, cheap drinks. I didn't even get to find out. All these reviews are talking about how great the guys here are, and I wish those guys were working here last night. A woman was working last night, and when my friends and I sat down, she asked what we wanted, and I told her with a joking tone, "I'm a Bitchy drinker. What do you suggest?" She told me "not tonight", and continued to insult me and tell me that I sure don't act like someone who's over 21. She asked what I usually get and I told her a Long Island or AMF, and she said that she wouldn't serve something like that that late (11:30ish). I'm not sure how being honest about what I like constitutes such poor customer service. My friend ordered a beer and that was fine. I hope that if/when I return, I can give a better review of Junior's, because I don't bookmark places often, but I've had this place Bookmarked for a few months now and it was a huge disappointment to have such a rude bartender. read more

I needed a cocktail, who am I kidding, I most always need a cocktail. But today of all days, there was an urgency. I was already a little weary of the bar tender inspecting my license like I was entering a top secret federal building. Flipping it over, swiping it, putting it under a light, squinting at me. Finally he stared blankly at me...this must be my que " Madres Please! ". Without a word he grabbed a glass filled it with ice and splashed some Vodka in it. My jaw dropped, I was filled with pure horror, That's IT?! Don't be shy old man,I'm a big girl. He proceeded to fill the rest of my huge glass with OJ and Cranberry juice...I could've cried. Upset, I immediately ordered a shot and just as quickly as it was put on the bar I dumped it in my drink. He was peeved, I could care less, his drink pouring was just pain un-American. A bit in the hipster side, with a pool table and maybe 7-10 tables (including tiny booths) is the capacity of this bar. They make a good drink at a reasonable price and they have pinball. Junior's is basically your average dive bar; I've definitely been to worse bars but it's nothing to write home about either. The real bonus is that it's not being creepy - I don't feel like I would be unsafe if I went there alone, which is an accolade many dive bars cannot boast. I understand that you can order pizza from the place next door and have it delivered to your table at Junior's but I've never done that so I can't speak to the veracity of that claim or the quality of the pizza. If you're looking for a hole in the wall to drink unaccosted, skip Cheers To You and come to Juniors instead. read more

**Please not that Junior's is on 300 South, not 500 South as Yelp indicates. I recommended the change, but it hasn't occurred yet.** Junior's is a great little downtown bar. I'm not gonna call it a dive bar for several reasons: 1) The crowd is mostly hipsters, so there is ZERO threat from that group. You could probably yell out "sale at American Apparel" and they would all go running for their bicycles. 2) There are front windows that allow plenty of light in. I feel like a dive bar needs to have that dark/dank feel. Junior's feels quaint in comparison. 3) There's a patio out front for smoking. A dive bar might have an alley or something. Maybe I'm over-thinking it. There are a couple of things I really like about Junior's. The bartenders are on the older side. They help counter the youth of the crowd--so it doesn't feel like just a trendy bar. I also like the interior of Junior's. Between the pinball machine in the corner and the beercan collection on the wall I am reminded of the past. There's a timeless quality to Junior's that is both relaxing and inviting. Happy hour and late night can get a little crowded. I've hung there when it was near empty--playing pool & bullshitting with a bartender who actually remembers the past. #SLC Library crowd forever! This bar used to be located on the corner of 200 East and 500 South, across the street from the Salt Lake City Public Library. Thank god the intellectuals and public servants of the library still favor Juniors Tavern. Though I have moved away from Utah, this should be anybody's first stop (before home) when arriving in SLC. There is nothing I can say about Junior's that hasn't already been said, its the real deal. Great bartenders, divey but not dirty, and right in the middle of downtown SLC. But rather than focus on all the reasons to visit Juniors, I will instead make a plea. If you are a bro and you are browsing yelp for your new bar, please leave Junior's alone. There are so many bro-bars in SLC that your options really won't be limited in any way. If you do decide to visit Junior's can you limit your bro behavior to a minimum? Specifically: please don't yell "duh" repeatedly at the top of your lungs, please don't congregate in the middle of the bar so that no one can pass, please don't look surprised when I ask you to back up because you are so drunk that you are getting too close with everyone in a 2 feet range. Also please don't smash a beer can against your head, talk loudly about girls you would like to f*ck (yes this happened), or smack your lady friend's ass repeatedly in a crowded area. In short Juniors was a dive bar, then it became a hipster bar, and now it seems that it may be becoming a bro bar. Lets not let this happen to Juniors. This is definitely a bar. People love it. I'm seasonably indifferent to it. It's good. I don't really look forward going there, but I mostly am alright when I am there. It's just a bar. It seems like a good place to relax and enjoy some time with friends. I liked the fact that it's much quieter than other bars, and I like looking at old vintage things. But nothing made me want to go back. It's just... generic. The bartenders are bartenders. They aren't spectacular, but they make a good drink. I held the door open for a few ladies as I entered. One of the ladies had the verbal appearance of being drunk but I think it was a speech impediment after conversing with her at the bar. Within 20 minutes and my first beer the bar tender (older woman) cut this lady, her friend, my girlfriend and myself off. When I asked for a reason she refused and turned the conversation on me asking if I was "pushing" her. The other bar tender told me we were all cut off because of the lady next to me with the speech impediment. So I guess it was "guilt by seating arrangement." I won't be returning to this dump. This is a simple, quaint bar that's located right in the heart of downtown. The vibe is totally casual, but it's also not as divey as a lot of other places. We simply stopped here because I had never been before, and we found a parking spot right in front. It's a great place to grab an inexpensive beer and actually have a clean place to sit. There's a pool table in the back as well. They also sell chips, pickles, pickled eggs and will order pizza from pie hole for you if you need something to soak up the booze. read more

Easy to spot with the tiny outdoor smoking garden of bawdy revelers. Well-lit signage and a nice big window in front. The 70s style Addams family pinball machine next to the window was a nice touch. Simple classic layout of a long rectangle with the bar on the right and plenty of seating. Getting to the bathroom is a little bit of a trek when you are soused as it is down a long hallway. The end of the bar near the front has incidental three point lighting for quality drunk photos or if you care to make an indie rom-com. The patrons would make perfect extras for such a worthy endeavor. Filled with fun-loving patrons. The median age was guessing ~27. Everyone was made to feel welcome. Saw some beautiful tattoos. Saw some dressed down business-types in town for a convention. Saw some jack mormons playing pool. It was sort of like Cheers except nobody knows your name. Good energy to mix with your buzz. Everyone appeared comfortable even though it was a crowded friday night. I cannot remember the music. Barb served us. she was wonderful. Even though it was busy she juggled orders and mixed some solid drinks very efficiently and with seemingly effortless execution. I also saw her diplomatic skills in play as she flawlessly cut someone off before they had one too many. Nobody was leaving Las Vegas under her watch. The gin and tonics were straightforward. The lime was cut lazy but thats part of the dive bar charm. The long islands were popular. Not sure if there was a special going on, but virtually every beer served was accompanied with a generous side car shot of medicine (e.g. jagermeister). People were doing their shots like the voting in Chicago--early and often. I looked and could not see a single soul nursing their beverage or beverages. The outdoor patio/smoking garden was undersized and filled with puffers. No cigars. No clove cigarettes. No nicotine patches. It was actually noisier outside than inside. The rain gutter-style drink holders on the railing of the patio is a clever feature since it means you can stand outside the patio while keeping your drink securely inside the establishment jurisdiction. Not that anyone really cared about the rules. For the perfect low-key date with someone you would like to know better: sushi at Shogun's then stroll around the corner for drinks at Junior's. While there are plenty of fine drinking establishments in Salt Lake and Park City, a pet peeve of mine is that many simply try to hard. There's always some sort of theme, or a particular audience a bar might be trying to attract. Not so with Junior's Tavern, a staple of simplicity and sanity in SLC for nearly 40 years. In its second location, Junior's offers more of the same "Jazz, blues and booze" philosophy it was founded upon. Dark, clean, and small, its service is rarely expedient (and occasionally even unfriendly), and yet there's a certain eccentric charm to Greg, the owner, and each of his bartenders. Plus it may be Salt Lake's truest melting pot, as hipsters, lawyers, other downtown professionals, and curmudgeon old men all happily join each other for a Guinness and a Jameson--both available on tap. Junior's Tavern is a great downtown watering hole. Junior's offers a couple of booths, seats at the bar, outdoor patio, and a pool table in the back. Junior's has an eclectic mixture of regulars, business people, hipsters, and people waiting for their broadway theater show. They only have a handfull of beers on tap. But any joint that offers more than two taps is good in my book. Juniors offers Budweiser and PBR pitchers for $7 bucks every day. The steins go for $4 bucks. The microbrew pitcher prices vary depending on what you want to sip on. The well drinks range from $3.00 - 3.50. You might recognize one of the bartenders from Brewvies. If you call brewvies, he is the guy telling you the movie times and serving your favorite Uinta brew. My only complaint about Junior's is that it should have more seating but I don't mind standing at times. read more
