    Banh mi brat

The best thing about this place? The beer. Surprise, surprise. They have something for everyone. What's maybe a tad bit more surprising is the environment, the fries, and service! Had two separate sausages (bang mi brat, B.A.F.) and the buns both fell apart from sogginess. But the fries were in point and delicious both times. Trivia: What element in the boil process of making beer gives it the bitterness? And, if added after the boil, gives a strong floral smell?

Beer Bar was a fun vibe with games at the tables and games on all of the tvs. Order at the bar. Service was decent. We didn't try the food but the drink was decent. Good option to hang out, watch a game and have a beer.

Beer Bar is a staple in the bar scene in SLC. They have every type of beer you can dream of, from sours to IPAs to spaghetti beer (??!). It's so much more than just a beer bar though - you can find live sports on the projectors, fresh sausages and burgers, board games, a lively patio with a street view, a back patio with real bleachers and various types of entertainment such as live DJ sets. Beer Bar is connected to Bar X, its cocktail-forward sister bar, so you can dip back and forth between the two for two different vibes in one setting. The bartenders are always hospitable and friendly, readily available to offer suggestions if the long beer list gets overwhelming! My friends and I love to come here on a weekday night and catch up. Make sure to try their Thai Curry brat!!

Beer Bar was packed to the brim last Friday night. It's a high volume bar meant for groups and beer enthusiasts. Having said that, they boast a full bar, cocktail menu, outdoor patio, and a food menu with brats, burgers and fries. Lots of TV's playing popular sporting events. I was able to catch the tail end of the MLB playoffs. Anywho, the place was popping. Get in line and pick your poison. They had a draft list that sounded good, but then once I discovered their can and bottle list I was completely overwhelmed. In a good way, of course. Since I was stuffed from my dinner down the street, food wasn't on the docket. I chose two different local SLC beers and I was content with my choices. One from Proper Brewing, the other from T.F. Brewing. With the latter being an exceptional hazy pale ale. Glad I came here. Wish I had some friends in tow, but everyone was friendly and polite, albeit a young rowdy crowd. Beer Bar is a must for any beer fan stumbling around Downtown SLC.

Came to this little bar to waste some time before the RSL game. The bartender was very nice and helpful with giving me a glass of lemonade to mix with my twisted tea. There was plenty of seating around 5pm and an open area in the back for outdoor drinks. You can even sit in the front of the building if you'd prefer the traffic and sidewalk noise as well. They have sports on the tv and a huge beer selection.

What an interesting place Beer Bar and Bar X is. First we hit up Beer Bar, went up to the bar and ordered some pints. We went to the back outside patio to grab a seat by a portable fire pit. It was interesting in the sense of the different types of people here. I truly love how eclectic the crowd was the by far the most diverse I've seen here in SLC since I've been here for the past 2 weeks. Thank god. Next we went next door to Bar X. The look of this place was cool as it was a mix of lounge and old western motif. The drinks were solid, the music was on (a mix of disco, trance and some pop). However the scene was a little casual as some folks wore ball caps and hoodies. I think if there was a dress code, it could really be a solid spot. Street parking is available.

I really wanted to leave because it was taking too long just to place our order for drinks, so that was already a red flag for me. The reviews were good at this restaurant so we wanted to try it out. It took a while for us to order our food after ordering our drinks because the waiter just took a long time--no surprise there. Once we received our food and the food arrived, upon sight I could tell my crawfish etouffee wasn't going to be good. I eat this meal a lot and I could tell by the color of the roux that I wasn't going to enjoy it, but I remained optimistic. You know looks can be deceiving! What I did not expect was that the food was going to taste as awful as it did!!! It was almost to the point where it wasn't edible. I probably took a few bites and didn't touch the rest. I gave my husband some and he said it wasn't good at all. The alligator cheesecake was such a cleaver idea and cool concept, but it just didn't taste good either. I hate to say this, but I wouldn't recommend this place at all.

I had high hopes for locally brewed beer and Asian cuisine, but nothing really hit the mark. Beer was okay. Lukewarm, and decidedly not crispy nor refreshing. Our group was three and we tried a lot of the food on the menu and nothing really hit. The pickled cucumbers were good. The dumplings (which we were told by our server are handmade) were genuinely flavorless and the wrapper was way too thick and chewy. We tried the pork buns as well, same issue, a serious lack of flavor and seasoning. Pork belly entree was middling, just a flavor profile that didn't work. I had the fried chicken sandwich and it was fried crispy but the sauce and toppings were unmemorable and lacked any kind of punch or umami to speak of. It came with a side of food service fries, which were crispy but served with plain old ketchup. Oh by the way everything is expensive. Starters were $15+ and most entrees, including noodle soups were $20+ which is crazy. Cocktails were $18 and no wine pour less than $16. The only thing cheap is the beer which makes sense because it was mediocre at best. Server brought the check, said "no rush" and then we waited while he sat three tables, brought drinks for three tables and took two food orders. After 15 minutes I took the bill to the till and had him run it in front of me. I still tipped because I'm not that person. Not going back, there's better beer and Asian food elsewhere.

And to round out the event was the crab Rangoon dip... it just didn't work. I sooo wanted crab rangoons after having this. We visited at least two, during our four days in SLC. This one was the first: a cathedral-style brewpub with a sports bar aesthetic, with decent food, decent drinks, decent service, and decent prices. Everything was decent. You're not likely to be disappointed by anything you order, but you're not likely to be blown away by anything, either (another thing Squatters has in common with McMenamins, I'd say). During our second visit (to another location, but I'm sure the same rule applies), our party was only interested in ordering drinks (one per person, mind you), but we were informed that we *had* to order some sort of food to accompany them (I'm sure this is more of a Utah thing, rather than a Squatter's thing, but still annoying), so bear that in mind if you're looking for a place to just chill with a beverage and watch a game. Still, the vibe here is lively and friendly; assuming your server is as well, which was a coin flip, in our experience. For a fast, casual chain of brewpubs, Squatters has a lot going for it, and I can see why they are popular, as clearly as I can see ways in which they can improve. A little more focus, attention to detail, and commitment to excellence, and Squatters could absolutely dominate in SLC, and beyond.
