    BBQ and beers
    Kate A.

After hiking nearby and driving Route 66 awhile we needed a bite to eat; we were thrilled to find Junkyard 66 just outside of Grants, CO. It really is a junkyard that started brewing beer! We were greeted right away and had great service for our visit. The interior is fun and funky, with furniture made of car parts in a small bar area, plus a huge dining/event space where guests can eat and drink among cars, parts, and tools, in view of huge brewing tanks. Seating options vary from high-top tables for two to large round tables for eight or more. Restrooms are clean and well-stocked. The hand-written menu offered five house-made beers plus guest taps, mixed drinks, and wine. Food options are simple: BBQ beef, pork, or chicken sandwiches, all of which include chips (a short can of Pringles.) This was plenty for us, though diners with special requirements may not find anything appropriate to eat. The beer was cold and delicious; we tried the Rack & Piñon lager and F460 Hefeweizen. Sandwiches were excellent as well, with hot, well-seasoned meat piled high on a toasted bun. (We caught a glimpse of bottles of Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ sauce, which may be the basis of the flavor.) Heading back to our car we noticed an outdoor concert space behind the main building, with a large stage and plenty of room for guests. This was a perfect pit stop on a hot afternoon. We'll be back next time we pass through!

    Terrific pulled pork.

Delicious pulled pork sandwich, friendly folks and good beer. We stayed out back in our camper with several other Harvest Host members.

Pulled chicken sandwich, chips and a cold beer. The sandwiches were large and stuffed with meat!

We stopped in on a weekday afternoon after we had been out sightseeing with our two dogs. This place is so cool, it really was a junkyard! We were the only ones there but thinking it's a fun place to be weekends and evenings! Service was impeccable, the beers were good and cold and our sandwiches were delicious! Wish we could have stayed around to visit when there was live music or a party going on!

It's amazing, out in the middle of no where! Look go the junkyard! And the small sign that states they are a brewery! Loved it!!

So glad we found this little gem on Route 66! We were hot, tired and hungry and Crystal and the Junkyard took care of it all! We got there just as they were opening so thought we might have to wait a bit but we were greeted with a smile right away and offered food and brews! The beer was ice cold and the BBQ was amazing! I had the pulled pork and hubby had the brisket. Both had BBQ sauce on them which hubby doesn't normally care for but it's not a heavy sauce, not too sweet and definitely didn't hide the flavor of either of the meats. The sandwiches were piled high and served piping hot with nice soft buns. The decor is super fun with car hoods for the tables and plenty of junkyard to take in while enjoying the beer and food. The music was at a nice level and it was some great oldies we really enjoyed. I highly recommend Junkyard Brewery and we will definitely be back. Next time we'll spend the night through Harvest Hosts!

Back room for large parties and events.

Stopped in last night while driving to South Dakota. Found this on Harvest Host, another winner. Great cold beers, lagers, IPAs, odd drinks like pina' colada. Many many more. Great decors in side, a true road trip gem and enjoy the games they provide and the delicious food! Great stay!!

66 Junkyard Brewery, Grant, New Mexico, June 12, 2023 - Front Counter

June 12, 2023 - Route 66 Junkyard Brewery (Grant, NM) We were driving from Taos, New Mexico to Gallup in our motorhome and decided to stop at Route 66 Junkyard Brewery to check it out. We're about three hours into our drive and we're ready for a bite to eat and a nice cold beer. The restaurant website said they opened at noon. We were there at about 12:20 pm. This brewery really is as advertised. It is a former junkyard that has been converted into a brewery. What a novel concept. They have an 8 foot high rolling gate at the entranceway, and there's a chain-link fence that goes around the entire property. When we got there, the chainlink gate was closed; however, it looked like there was a guy walking around inside. We really didn't have any place to park the motorhome, so we had to go forward. When we found a place to pull over, we went ahead and called to see what was going on. The guy that answered said they were open and I told him that the gate was closed. Hold on he said, I'll call you right back. Two minutes later I got a call back that the gate had been closed so the one guy inside could go take care of some business. OK, I said, I'll turn around and head back. When we got there, sure enough, the gate was open. Once you get inside, there is plenty of room to park, so that wasn't a problem with the motorhome and our attached car. They are dog friendly, so we brought our little spaniel with us inside. Old car rims were stacked about 3 feet high and welded together to make a border around the front of the brewery building. We were their only customers at that point in time, and the guy there apologized for having the gate closed. No worries, we said. We're just glad you're open! They have a pretty cool front bar area that has the front end of an old 50s vintage Chevy truck sticking out from the counter as you order your food and drink. They have a bar area behind the counter that has a dark bar kind of vibe with a couple of TVs going, as well as a much larger open lit up area as the dining area where the beer is made with about a 10 barrel system with the kettles and fermenters. They only had about six or seven beers on tap, but fortunately they had a nice West Coast IPA for me and a tropical pinacolada beer for my wife. We ordered the barbecued brisket sandwich for lunch that came with a bag of chips. They have a large commercial grade smoker that sits out front, and the guy who took our order walked over to the barbecue and pulled the meat right off the grill to make our sandwiches. Wish he would've given us our beers first, but it wasn't a huge deal. As we waited, we checked out the large brewery/dining area where we are waiting. It really is a unique place. There are old hub caps on the wall, shelves of old autoparts like AM/FM radios, starters, and an assortment used parts. You might imagine that it's a little dirty and greasy; however, that was not the case. It was a more like being in an auto parts museum. The dining tables are old car hoods. Chairs are made from metal with padded seat cushions. Comfortable enough. They have a pool table and a soccer table. They are set up to do live music and have a nice multi channel soundboard, and what seemed to be a pretty good sound system as we listened to the radio. Both the beers we tried very tasty, so no complaints there. The brisket sandwich meat was good, but the bun was not the most memorable. If you've read any of my brewery reviews in the past, you know I like to collect swag, hats, shirts, stickers, and cans. None of that at this brewery. I realize the guy there was doing everything by himself, so I don't want to be too harsh in my review. Five stars for the beer, three stars for the sandwich, three stars for the ambience, and one star for the service which I blame on lack of staff and maybe a management issue. Overall, I'm giving them 3 stars with the hope that they'll take care of some of the deficiencies.

This is an interesting place. I stopped here because my Google Maps said this was the place. It still looked and smelled like an old auto shop. The old waiting room is now the bar and the old garage is the larger dining area, with a few classic Corvettes on display. (Just don't touch them) I liked this place. Several locals were at the bar telling war stories. I felt like I was interrupting their conversation when I walked in, so I sat in the back to work a bit with my Chromebook. I had a Belgian witbier and a caramel-infused Pinon pine, which was surprisingly good. Beer was served in plastic cups due to the covid pandemic. The interior decor is definitely to be enjoyed.

Michael is an excellent host and very aware of his food and brews. Very down to earth. The food and drink is worth coming here for. Especially the pulled pork! The seating and decor is very on theme. This is the kind of place you want to be a regular at. Any time you're on Route 66, stop here.

A very unique repurposing of a junk yard. Very charming & nostalgic look at old car, truck parts, wheels, tailgates, seats. Top that with interesting & delicious beers. A must stop in for a quick one or a long one with food when available.

A very pleasant bartender seated my wife, our young puppy, and me on their very nice patio, and brought the pup a bowl of water without being asked, which we always appreciate. I ordered an IPA and my wife got a stout, as February is stout month at craft breweries all around the country. Both of us thought our beers were delicious and well balanced. To our surprise, there were ashtrays on several of the tables on the patio, and a man was smoking a cigar a few tables from us (smoking is banned inside and out at all business establishments in Colorado). The piped-in music was rather eclectic - everything from 70s classic rock to Shakira to modern auto-tuned pop. We had just had lunch in Hatch, so did not try the food. We have decided that we will spend the night in Socorro on an upcoming trip to see my dad, as the town looks like a lot of fun and we really want to try the other local brewpubs.

I got a flight of beers: the Green Chile Lager actually had quite a spicy kick (definitely an acquired taste). My favorite was the 49er's Oktoberfest Lager. The Hoppenheimer was a strong IPA with a 9.3% ABV, and the Ladrones Mexican Lager was crisp and refreshing. For food, I tried the Socorro Dog ($11). It's supposed to have bacon, but I couldn't really see or taste any. I liked the combo of shredded Gouda, green chile, tomato relish, and beer mustard. The poppy seed bun was also a nice touch. We also shared a 12 inch Supreme Pizza ($14.50) with olives, sausage, green chile, mushrooms, and pepperoni. I liked the thin crust. I also ordered the Birds of a Feather cocktail ($13) which had dark aged rum, Aperol, pineapple juice, lime, and simple syrup. I asked for a splash of Prosecco to make it sparkling, and it was indeed refreshing. They also have a pool table ($1 per rack) and a dog-friendly outdoor patio, which I always like to see. There's also plenty of board games to borrow. The only downside was that the bathrooms could use a little cleaning and updating. Overall though, this was a solid spot with good drinks and a chill vibe.

Sadly, we found kind of a mixed bag. First, the standout items. The margaritas were fantastic; some of the best we've had in the USA and extremely generous. The pinto bean sides were some of the best we've had since returning to the States in 2013. Perhaps not quite as great as those of the shuttered El Cotorro but still stellar. Next, the tacos. We tried only two of the several tacos on offer - The El Pastor and the Pescado. Both were served in what was called "corn tortillas" but these differed from virtually any corn tortillas we've ever had in Mexico or elsewhere. They were at least twice as thick as your typical corn tortilla found in just about all Mexican taco places in Mexico and elsewhere. The consistency and taste were quite different from your normal corn tortilla also. In fact, they really didn't seem to have much taste at all, of corn or anything else. Now to the fillings. At the aforementioned El Cotorro, the meat for the Al Pastor tacos was cooked on a vertical rotating spit which was the only way we ever saw it cooked in Mexico. The meat La Reforma used in their al pastor tacos was more chunky and way drier than any we ever had in Mexico or at El Cotorro. It didn't taste similar to any al pastor tacos were ever had in Mexico. It also kind of seemed like it wasn't cooked recently whereas in Mexico you can watch the cook with a large knife carve off the meat from the vertical spit right in front of you. Usually the time between the carving and it sitting in front of you is under 10 seconds. The fish taco at La Reforma was disappointing. The fish resembled a fish stick but one without much flavor. We wouldn't order it again. We gave the mini-churros a try for dessert. Because they were so small, they were way crispier than your typical regular-sized churro. We might return but we'd skip the al pastor and the fish tacos and try some of the other tacos. But we strongly suggest that they dump their current "corn tortillas" because they're not that good. Way too thick and virtually tasteless. Lo siento. Kudos for the margaritas and the beans. The rest of what we tried didn't live up to the recent glowing review in the ABQ Journal.
