Cool vibe, mediocre cocktails. Perhaps we had a bad bartender or didn't order correctly but in my group of 4, none of us liked our drinks. I ordered an old fashioned which was off-menu but I feel like it's a pretty standard cocktail. An orange slice was muddled into it which is not like any old fashioned I've ever had, it was more like a whiskey-juice which is peculiar and I would not recommend it. Everyone else ordered on menu from the main cocktail list and we all tried each others' drinks and no one really liked anything. It's a fun place to take someone for the novelty of entering it but I'd suggested grabbing a quick drink and leaving. It's not a place to spend the night sipping cocktails. read more

I know, I know, an updated review within 2 months? Last night my friends coerced me out of the house, we got to Justine's and the door person already knew who I was. She joked with me a bit about my temporary license and told us to get inside and warm up. She then casually said, oh, yea it's also our first birthday. We walked in and the first booth had a couple of sweet cakes set up and there were several cards being passed around. We had a few drinks, and the man of the night walked in and was in awe of the sweet celebration! Delicious cake was passed around and the owner actually sat with friends at a booth rather than taking his usual stance behind the bar. This is proving to be a cool sexy place, that still has a soul. Thanks for adding another gem to providence. I love the reliable cocktails, warm atmosphere and feeling like I know the best not so secret secret in town. It did get more crowded than it usually does on a thursday night, but I guess the hype is growing still. Please go and have a manhattan or French 75 and tip well. Justine's is a cute bar in Ollneyville Square. As others have said, there is no sign or indication of a bar. Correction to other reviews: it is 4 or 5 doors down from Ollneyville NY System. If you find a dark lingerie shop with bars on the window, you have found Justine's. The cocktails are delicious and only $6 dollars, a deal that cannot be beat anywhere else in Providence. You cannot go wrong ordering off their menu. The crowd is eclectic and fun. This it's definitely a great spot for dates, birthdays, or small groups (less than 6). I went on a weekend night and had no problems, contrary to other reviews. It definitely gets busier around 10:30 pm. The service is friendly and attentive. No one had to make a large effort to get a drink. This will definitely become a regular place for me. read more

There is no way you could ever find this place if you didn't know it was here. Thanks Yelp for letting me in on the little secret. Knowing that there wasn't going to be a sign and knowing that it was going to be a store front, we still had a hard time finding Justine's. Once we decided that "this" must be the place, I felt a little shady walking into the store and asking to be let through the curtains. But I think this experience is what gives Justine's some of it's charm. Once inside the place is very reminiscent of the Avery and Lili Marlene's. The drink menu has a large selection of classic cocktails and new cocktails. The best part of this is that the classic cocktails are wicked cheap - tell me the last time you paid $5 for a cocktail. I finally made it in last night after months of my friends' stories piquing my curiosity. There is such an air of mystique surrounding this spot...I have to admit I was afraid to go myself, and afraid to go with someone who had also never been. I walked behind him into the lingerie shop front, and stood back while the curtain was drawn to reveal the lovely room behind it. Once I stepped inside, I realized that really wasn't all that difficult, and once I had the first sip of my delicious cocktail, I wish I'd "ripped the band-aid off" sooner, so to speak. My first drink was off the $5 cocktail list. After scanning it and seeing creative names, quality ingredients, and unique combinations, how could I not try one. I mean, $5?!? I got the Charlie Chaplin and it was delish...sloe gin, apricot, and lime. My second drink was equally delicious. It wasn't off the list, but was still only $7. I like these prices just fine. We took our drinks to a small, ornate table in the corner with posh, velvety chairs, and I enjoyed looking around at the lovely space: high ceilings, dark, cool colors, mirrors, gold-accented light fixtures...I really like the vibe. I think I got cooler because I came here. Something about the secretive nature of this place does more than add to the charm. It utterly makes this place. There's a sort of hushed awe in the place--as if we're all in on the same secret--which we are. I can only attest to one of the wine offerings as I was driving, but my companions raved about the other offerings and the cocktails. One of my companions said that his cocktail would have made Hemingway proud. And if that's not high praise, I don't know what is. The five stars are just because its such a cool concept. With no actual sign, nor any clear view of the actual bar when you walk in, Justines is to my knowledge Providence's only true speakeasy bar. Use Google Maps street view to find what you're looking for on the road, becuase it can be a little challenging at night to negotiate both the traffic and the search. It's right near La Lupita and you'll know you're there by the out-of-place mannequins wearing lingerie. When you get there you'll be greeted by a friendly bouncer, who'll show you in. Inside is a true-to-form speakeasy style bar. The drinks are both delicious and cheap and the bartenders are friendly. What's not to like? read more

I heard about this place about a year ago from a fellow resident. I finally went here a couple months ago. Challenging to find, but once you do, you will not be dissappointed. Located in Olneyville Square, there is no obvious sign. Once you walk in, there is an initial sense of confusion as you are in the middle of lingerie store. Once you verify with the bouncer that this is in fact the right place, he directs you behind a black curtain and there's a dimly lit bar with plenty of comfortable seats. I am fairly confident that I would never have found this place on my own. Luckily, I was escorted by friends in-the-know. As others mentioned, there's no sign. Not a tiny, hard to spot sign, literally, no sign. Look for the lingerie shop and you'll find it. Once you enter the front shop, the host leads you through a black, velvet curtain where you're instantly transported back in time and you'll immediately regret not wearing you flashiest flapper dress....although you might get a judgy look from the owner if you did wear one... The decor is spot on. Music, lighting, wallpaper, everything. And the drinks are ridiculously affordable and deliciously authentic to boot! Get the French 75. Or two or three! If you like Loie Fuller, you'll like Justine's because it's the same owner who started them along with Ama's and Lily Marlene's. He's certainly got an unmistakable style but I'm not complainin'! As much as I enjoy the chic vibe of the bar, I was slightly disappointed by the quality of the mixed $6 drinks. From sampling both my mixed drinks and that of my friends, I've exhausted all of the super sweet concoctions that Justines had to offer. In short, the drinks were too sweet and lacked much personality. The staff were friendly and they were able to make slightly pricier concoctions with flare on request, but I could order those kind of drinks in a nicer neighborhood any day of the week. Overall, Justine is a great, chic place with mediocre $6 mix drinks, but given how sweet they are and how slightly sketchy the surrounding neighborhood is at night, I'd probably go elsewhere for a social drink. read more

Intrigued by the mystery of no signs and unmarked doors, I decided to embark on a mini-adventure to try and find this place. Armed with a Mapquest (no GPS for me) and a picture of 11 Olneyville Square shot by Google Earth, I easily found it--thanks to the extra clues about a tiny lingerie shop behind barred windows and the mention of a New York System Restaurant on the corner. Once inside, Justine's is a tall, dark, and handsome place cloaked in wood and dark blue velveteen. Justine's serves incredibly delicious hand-crafted cocktails and a small menu of delightful snacks. (Try the Smoked Salmon Crudo.) I went around 7:00 p.m. and the place was pretty empty, however, I'm sure it ramps up for a trendy night scene. But, if you're looking for a quiet place to sip and chat with more mature friends, go earlier in the evening. That way, you can park directly in front of the bar and not have to worry about someone stealing your car. read more

Justine's gets better every time I go there. Hard to explain, since nothing really changed(other than a few new drinks) so I guess it has to me simply enjoying the place more. Cocktails I didn't quite like the first time I tried them are now my new favorites. The service is always excellent. Bringing new people there is quite an experience, the doubtful look when they are walking into the store front(I thought you said THIS was a nice place!), followed by the "oh wow!" after the curtains open. I strongly favor sweet cocktails, and I love the Chapala, French 75, Kosmonaught, Charlie Chaplin and Southside. Do yourself a favor and visit the place. The dream of 2006 New York is alive in Providence, and I couldn't be happier about it. Remember when the barkeep at Milk and Honey first listened to your likes and dislikes and served you up the potion of your dreams? How about the first earl grey gin cocktail you drank at Pegu or when you sipped from a metal cocktail spoon/straw at Little Branch? That day you spent drowning your face in the menu at Clover Club with your Brooklyn friends? Or Elsa, where you made the grave mistake of mixing absinthe and champagne? Stirring jam in your cocktail at Madame Geneva was the prelude to sipping on bitters in the tiny outdoor table at Amor y Amargo and an aged Gibson at the Beagle. Then there was the Rum House, where you learned that even Midtown can rock an old-time cocktail bar, and that time you elbowed your way to the bar at Minetta Tavern to discover the beauty of a well-made Martinez. Sometimes I get caught up in the stupid NYC things I like and start to think that they would never fly anywhere else. I am occasionally heartened by a place like Justine's that exports an element I love about New York, modifies it to make it work in a different place (hello, $5 cocktails) and provides confirmation that, sometimes, New York and its weirdo denizens are spot-on. I tried the Gibson and the Stinger. The Gibson contained the best cocktail onion I have ever tasted and I want to come back on a weeknight to get the recipe (please share!). The Stinger was a fresh dessert in a glass. Decor is nice, music is low, bartenders are friendly. If I lived in Providence, I'd be here on the regular. Also,opening this place next to a NY System was a stroke of genius. My first job was on Manton Avenue and it's pretty exciting to see that Olneyville has changed a lot since I was 15. read more

This place has been on my must visit list ever since my girlfriend told me they have great drinks and that the lay out of the place was an experience. When we first arrived I thought the place was closed, as I peeked in the window only to see mannequins dressed in lingerie. Looks like my kind of place I thought. We walked in and there is just one bouncer and a large black curtain preventing you from entering. It seemed like you needed some sort of password to get in, except sadly you don't. You simply just get your ID checked and into the bar we went. The bar has a very cool vibe. The music wasn't too loud, and there is limited seating. There is bar seating and a few tables around the bar. You sit wherever you want. I would recommend eating before, because the place is mostly for pre-dinner drinks, not for like dinner and a drink. They do have like cheese plates and charcuteries, but nothing more. We decided to sit at the bar because we though it made us look cooler than sitting at a table. Don't ask why just roll with it! When we finally sat down, it took almost ten minutes for the bartender to even look our way/give us a menu, which was sort of a buzz kill. But I don't let stuff like that annoy me, people are busy. The bartender was friendly and was willing to describe the drinks to us to give us a better understanding of what to expect. The drink menu isn't extensive, but they can also make drinks that are not on the menu. For instance, I ordered an Old Fashioned and that isn't listed on the menu. It was very good by the way! I didn't order any food so I can't help you in that aspect, but I saw other people's plates and they looked appealing! All in all Justine's is a cool dive bar with a very artsy vibe. Everyone in there was very reserved and kept to themselves. The conversations were quiet and no one was overly loud. We walked in and we were with our boyfriends the second we walk in while being greeted "are you here for pasties?" Came out of the doormans mouth. It was hilarious. This guy must love messing with people I know I would. We walked through the curtain and the ambiance was great, the bartender was a scruffy ginger Viking looking man who knew his shit. I was a bartender for many years and this guy was funny. The flowers behind the bar were some of the most beautiful roses I have ever seen. One thing I LOvE is that you can hear eachother speaking you don't have to yell. I thought that for four people 2-3 drinks each and 3 of the small "appetizers" the total was 80.00 that was so great! A great excuse to come to Justine's for the first time. To the uninitiated, the setting surrounding Justine's is shy of friendly - I suggest keeping an open mind about that. Far too often, the real gems of cities can be completely ignored by the exterior façade. It would be nice to have some sort of signage, but perhaps the effect of keeping out the uninformed is part of the experience. When going to a bar, the ambiance is hardly a concern of mine; yet the draw towards the dark, exposed brick surrounding is undeniable - as is the bartender explaining the merits of "Some Like it Hot" as it plays from the two-way mirror at the bar. But the drinks... Holy mole. So, so good, and so affordable! I even ordered off-menu (I got a Basil Hayden Old-Fashioned), with no fuss, and to great reward. Definitely stop by. read more

Awesome place with amazing decor for the era they are trying to be. Old style plush Velour furniture. Relaxing corner couches and chairs. Not full sizes drinks but worth the cost. Like Mike Sears' other venues, Justine's has a vintage, intimate and chic vibe. Although there is a very big chance you might not even make it inside due to it's somewhat hidden location (the first time I tried going I had to turn right back around after circling the block a few times and giving up) I felt triumphant when I finally made it through the velvet curtains and the bouncers smart remarks about my baby face juxtaposition'd with my legal drinking age. Once inside, I was very impressed with the decor and the prices for high quality drinks. It was a quiet enough night and the bartender was friendly while recommending what drink to get. It was a great ambiance just to grab and drink and catch up with some friends. Wholeheartedly recommend! (if you can find it) read more

Hidden gem in Olneyville!! Justine's won me over last night and renewed my belief that it is one of the hippest places to have a cocktail and have a conversation with a friend without having to scream. The vibe is definitely a throwback to the prohibition days...the decor is smart, art decor with great attention to the interior design details. But one goes to a place like this to enjoy the spirits. Mike was tending the bar last night and made up some excellent Cosmopolitans for my friend and I. 4 drinks later, I was paying my tab at $30! Went to Justine's fairly early on a Friday night. Parking was a little tough but I eventually found something. There is no sign folks - but yes, it is the lingerie store. There is a woman at the desk and then she will pull back the curtains for you so reveal the bar behind. Apparently you can actually legitimately buy lingerie in the front part, too! The drinks are nice and inexpensive - cocktails are either $5 or $7.50. You cannot beat the prices! The atmosphere was cute, and we enjoyed one round before heading off somewhere else. It is a cute concept, but I don't think the drinks are as good at the Eddy or the Dorrance. But for half the price, its a nice value if you feel like trekking out to Olneyville. Next time I go here I am going to be sure to pair it with some hot weiners afterwards. read more

However, I can only give this place 3 stars because the music selection is really a turn off. The music is way too loud so you have to yell over your friends or date or whoever you are there with. First timers - you will walk right by the door. Then you will turn around to find it, and you will once again walk by it. Once you find it, you will love it. It's quite intimate, and the drinks are delicious. Same owner as Lili Marlene's on Federal Hill, but this one has had a bit of a face lift. At times I wish it was slightly bigger, on a Saturday night it can leave a girl feeling a bit claustrophobic, but that it more of a 'me problem' then the pub. This is by far my favorite bar right now in Providence. Maybe it's the secretiveness of it, maybe it's the fact that the drinks are cheap and good!
