Oily roti and 2 unidentifiable chicken dishes - all loaded with grease!

After reading glowing reviews on Grubhub we decided to order from this place. Possibly the worst Indian food I have ever tasted. First, they got our order wrong. Should have been Chicken Tikka Masala and Chana Masala but we received 2 chicken dishes instead. The vegetarian had no dinner! Both entrées were swimming in oil. I have never had chicken tikka masala that wasn't cooked in a creamy yogurt/tomato sauce. This was anything but creamy! The roti was also greasy. The rice was okay, the raita was okay and the samosas were so-so. Both entrées were inedible. There are too many good Indian restaurants in our area to put up with this horrible food. Not sure why any of the Grubhub reviewers thought this was good food.

    Indian takeout in Mt. Airy

Jyoti is a take-out Indian spot not far from where I live in Philadelphia. Though it has bistro in its name, there are only about two tables inside. Take-out is its primary business and this of course is perfect during the COVID-19 crisis. Now I have never found the food at Jyoti to rise above the standard ... and don't worry about it being too spicy for you - it isn't. Still I was happy to do takeout from Jyoti the other evening as I was getting tired of home cooking during the 'Shelter in Place' order in response to the corona virus. The Pakora I ordered with a tamarind chutney were decidedly ordinary. In fact I couldn't even decide what was inside - even after cutting it open. The special of the evening - Baingan Bharta - which has always been a vegetarian favorite of mine was better. Though it wasn't spicy at all (you have to add that at home), it was def freshly made and full of flavor. The takeout went smoothly. You order and pay ahead of time and then they will hand your bag of food out to you from the front door. That is the way it should be during these troubling times of the virus. I could assign only three stars to this establishment but if you have reasonable expectations for the food here (def not gourmet), Jyoti will occasionally prove to be handy for dinner. And it deserves an extra star for operating during the COVID-19 crisis in a responsible way.

This is ok Indian food. For the area it's pretty decent. More americanized than I prefer but enjoyable. What I enjoy the most is the size options for entrees. It allows me to pick more than one entree and not spend a fortune, unlike traditional Indian food restaurants.

    I like their sign too.

Service was pretty brief, but helpful, and we were able to order and get our food fairly quickly! The order for four: - Chicken tikka masala-- the benchmark. - Lamb vindaloo-- the craving. - Vegetable korma-- veggies to balance things out. - Cheese and peshawari naan. - Two mango lassis. Flavors are on-point here! Portions seemed a bit small, but we were definitely completely stuffed by the time we were through, and we cleaned off everything, including the leftover sauce on the bottoms of our bowls with our naan. Peshawari naan was a pleasant surprise! Good sweet and slightly nutty flavor complemented a lot of the dishes that we got. Meat is tender and they are pretty generous with the quantities of meat compared to other Indian places I've visited in the past. Mango lassis were also decent-- nothing to wow about, but solid, and a good way to finish off the meal after all the flavor bombing from the other dishes. Ambience is simple and there's not a lot of room for large groups here. Indoor and outdoor is available, but just expect a simple homey environment and nothing too fancy!

The sauces that accompanied our butter chicken, chicken korma, and samosas were layered, complex, and unlike anything I've had before. The staff expertly guided us on spice levels, and the service throughout the meal was excellent. From the outside the restaurant may seem unassuming, but don't let that fool you. This place is more than worth the visit, and I'll be returning very soon.

It's enabled me to…read moresample foods from both cities....while New York will always be my 'restaurant Mecca', Philly's been a nice touch. I hadn't yet found a truly good Indian restaurant in Philly, until last night. Amma's came close, but fell short due to a goat dish I had with no goat! We happened upon Lilly's by looking for 'good restaurants in the Jenkintown area' on Yelp. Ironically, we'd walked by it dozens of times without noticing it, as there are other stores and restaurants in the area. It had several good reviews and since my partner had NEVER had Indian food before (I know it's hard to believe), I felt this was a must try! We walked in and immediately noticed how nice the interior looked - beautiful murals on the walls, a quiet, a relaxed atmosphere and everything looked clean and new. I knew exactly what we were going to order - the same two dishes I've been having for decades in New York, DC and other Indian restaurants I'd been to....Chicken Tikka Masala and Lamb Rogan Josh. Of course, we added an order of Naan. I initially judge these dishes based on the quality of the meat - in this case - chicken and lamb. I started with the Tikka Masala - as soon as I tasted a bite of the chicken, I knew we'd come to the right place! It was a delicious piece of lean, tender, white meat that had the most luscious, creamy, tomato based sauce - not too spicy ( we requested a very low 'heat'/spice level. My partner had never tasted a curry sauce before and was very impressed - she loved the dish! Next up, the Lamb Rogan Josh! I was pleasantly surprised to see large, lean, tender chunks of lamb in the pot that was served. The sauce was a little spicier than the Tikka Masala, but had an excellent flavor! It complimented the chicken dish perfectly. Both the lamb and the chicken were high quality meats that enabled these dishes to shine! Not to forget the delicious Naan - I took several scoops of both chicken and lamb and put them between a folded piece of Naan! Lilly's is a gem in Jenkintown - I'm glad we found this great Indian restaurant!

So we drove to Saffron Kitchen, thinking our chances were better. I like the ambience of Saffron. While my favorite Indian restaurant is a hole-in-the wall a few miles away, I was happy to be here. A waiter handed us menus that didn't include the prix-fixe dinner we came in for. "We have October specials. That's it," he said. "Nope, please check with the manager," I responded. And I was right. (Anyone coming in through October 25th might request the Restaurant Week menu, which may -- or may not -- be of interest.) The prix-fixe is $30 per person. Dinner was great, with leftovers enough for another meal. The appetizer was my favorite part. We each got a plate with a succulent chicken kabob and what's called 'aloo tikki.' (Was it potato? It was delicious.) There's a choice of four entrees, two being vegetarian. I chose chicken bhuna cooked with onions, green peppers, tomatoes, ginger, and garlic in a light curry. My husband ordered chicken tikka masala in a creamy, spicy tomato sauce. I thought his was better than mine. The plates came with basmati rice and a choice of either butter or garlic naan. You're given badami kheer, an Indian spin on rice pudding, for dessert. It's very good. I noticed there's a small lot to the side of the building, but nonetheless street parking is readily available. Saturday night Saffron had a steady stream of customers, many bringing their own wine. I'm happy to see they remain a byob sans corkage fee.
