Tried this place for the first time tonight and it was surprisingly really good. This place is underrated . The ambiance and restaurant decor are not the best but the food is on point. It was actually busy. We ordered the special with 4 dishes and crab for $128. Good deal because you get soup, bucket of rice and dessert. The portions are really generous and there was ample food for the price. The crab was also very good. We ordered crispy chicken, beef and gai lan, deep fried squid, pork chops in sweet and sour sauce. We also ordered squab too and it was surprisingly really good. Not dry at all and quite tasty. I'd have given a 5 star had the service been better. The food was amazing but they simply didn't have enough servers for the size of the restaurant. There are lots of big tables, so the servers were just running off their feet. You can't get their attention, so you have to go up to them to place your order or else you'll never get your order in. Then they didn't have the ingredients for 2 of the 5 dishes we ordered. When the hot water pot needed to be refilled, we were told they were out of hot water and needed to wait for it. When it was time for dessert, they also ran out and we had to wait. It is rather unusual for so many things to run out in one night. The food is worth waiting for but don't go there hungry, you might have to wait for awhile to get your food. Prices are reasonable, you see a lot of families there. When my frd asked to dine here I was skeptical in the beginning as the restaurant looks like old and dingy from the outside. The interior was farrrr from the usual modern and glamorous hk seafood restaurants we see elsewhere. However, the service was actually pretty good, the server we had was very conversational which is unusual for a restaurant like this. We picked the six dishes combo which we get steam fish for free. Everything was very delicious. The fish was big and fresh. Honey ginger spareribs was crispy outside and tender inside. The combo offers quite a good value considering the quality of the all the dishes we got. I would definitely recommend and being my families over for our gatherings. Good food, tentative service (maybe just with the server we had) and good value, just bad interior and ambiance. read more

It's getting harder and harder to find authentic Cantonese food nowadays in Vancouver and also restaurants which serves late night "da Lang" style food, yes, there are a few but they are getting rare as time goes. I have to thank David W., as I saw his review of this establishment and inspired me to give it a try! Growing up in the area we always used to frequent here for last minute dinner or quick addition to dinner at home or the go-to late night with school friends after a long night! After moving away from the area I stopped going here for a long while. Came here last night for dinner with my mom and I see nothing has changed. Decor is still the same no changes since the last 10+ years so walking in nostalgia totally hit me. It's not the fanciest place nor the most lively. Seems the restaurant never has more than 4 or 5 tables in it at night. We ordered my favourite dish here. The seafood on steamed egg tofu. It's got shrimp scallops squid and chicken chopped up with veggies on a bed of silky steamed tofu. Delicious with rice and since we do low carb dinners it's not too salty to eat on its own! Sweet and sour pork chops - this one we did end up having to wait quite a while. But they were freshly fried so by the time we got it it was very crispy still despite being drenched in sauce! My hubby really liked the breading but I thought it was a little too much. The sauce was nice but I think I would like it in smaller bit sized pieces rather than a small chop. Deep fried squab - it's been a hot minute since I've had squab and when I saw it on the menu for $14 I thought why not. Delicious as always. Crispy skin juicy meat! What's not to like! Tl;dr All in all a good place for Chinese food. It's not the best place but it's pretty good! Nostalgia aside the quality is there. They do have the set dinner specials but it's actually more worth it to just order the dishes rather than doing the sets with free soup and rice. Yes, the place looks sketchy, scary, old, dirty and outdated. They open from 4pm to 1am. One of the cousins is a cook and knows the owner, so we have been there a few times. This restaurant was full on a slow Monday night, filled with large tables of families so obviously they have a lot of loyal customers and lots of take out orders. The review is only for the FOOD and nothing else. We had a giant feast for 15 people and there were so much food left, the dishes is not small. Highlights: Crab cooked in First Pressing Soy Sauce, the combo meal comes with 1 free crab and our cousin ordered 3 more so our crabs were piled up to 12 inches tall. Deep Fried Salt and Spicy Prawns We have about 2.5 lbs and these babies were so good, I ate the shells along with the meat. They were perfectly spiced and not greasy at all, the frying was done perfectly, golden, tasty, crunchy. Pork Chop with Imperial Sauce These chops were fried and slathered with a dark sweet plum sauce and onions Honey Garlic Ribs The wonderful wave of garlic fragrance assail your senses before the server set the dish down. These riblets were so tasty I could have eaten the whole dish. Seafood and Chicken over Steamed Tofu The lightest of all the dishes, there were abundance of chicken, shrimp, scallops over shitake mushroom and greens over a platter of steamed tofu. The sauce is light so not to overwhelm the tofu. We had the Special Bake Salted Chicken, Beef with Bitter Melon, Pan fried conch with Sweet Peas, Saute Pea Tips and Melon Soup. We ended the meal with Baked Tapioca Pudding, with crunchy cookie top and gooey centre. This is not a fancy place but the food was really good. We came late at night for the late night supper menu... it is the typical Hong Kong style - mini dishes with plain congee. If you order 5 dishes, a free large congee is given to you. The dishes are good with good flavour however the free congee that is supposed to be large is small by comparison with other restaurant like Congee King. You are lucky if you could squeeze in 4 rice bowl size of congee. Given that you ordered 5 dishes of food, there is not enough congee to go with, we had to order a bowl of rice at the cost of $2.50. That's where they make the extra $, if you don't mind that... then you will enjoy the dishes... late at night with not too many customers, service was good. Don't expect ambience... you are in a typical Chinese restaurant... place is pretty run down - food is good. Cousin Sharon hits a home run with this choice. Her connections sourced us a 10+ lbs King Crab and a golden sand cod - both were recent arrivals direct from the Seafood wholesaler. King crab - done in 3 style. Steamed garlic for the legs (2 plates) - best I have ever had! (with over 20 king crabs under my belt.) Reason - quality of crab and a constrained use of oil. Stirred fried onions for the shoulders - though succulent, flavour is too strong for a crab of this freshness. Pepper and salt style works better here. Cod was steamed with onions, cilantro and light use of soy sauce - Cantonese style. This style done correctly along with the freshest fish masters the delicate taste of the cod. We had other dishes too but these 2 were most memorable. Who would believe that you could get a meal like this at such a Plain Jane Chinese restaurant. The 2 dishes described are 5 Solid stars. Overall, all dishes, Greasy Spoon decor, etc would place this as a 4+++ Star. Worth taking my parents to try again. read more

One of the best kept secrets for a Chinese restaurant in the East Vancouver. It's a family-run joint, and I was greeted by friendly staff. Although the interior looks a little old, but it's clean with an old school small town feel to it. I ordered four items from the menu in the family combo section, and it came with a huge bucket of rice, large bowl of soup of the day, your choice of one crab, steamed tilapia fish, or prawns. You also get dessert too. I got the green onion stir fried crab and it was big, fresh, and cooked to perfection. I loved the Szechuan spicy eggplant which was excellent with plain rice. The steamed chicken with green onion and ginger was great. The meat was very tender and it had a wonderful balance of green onion and ginger. Beef with black fungus was great too as the beef was very tender. The black fungus tasted very fresh and crunchy - it's one of the favourite mushrooms which is considered to be very healthy. All of the dishes were terrific tasting and very good in quality, fresh and the presentation was good. Service was very good as our plates very changed four times. We have been trying to find a new family favourite for Chinese take out. The reviews looked promising so we gave it a go. If you want swishy, elegant, fancy schmancy decor go somewhere else. If you want good food. THIS is the place! The dishes that really hit the mark for us were sweet and sour pork - there was little fat, mostly pork and a good amount of pineapple YUM! chicken and broccoli in black bean sauce - how the living fuck did they get the chicken SO TENDER!!! Another solid hole-in-the-wall discovery along Kingsway. The family combos are good deals - just pick your main dishes. Combo includes soup, rice, and dessert; all of the above were very decent. A two dish combo can easily feed 3 people. Highly recommend the Cod Fillet w/ Tofu Hot Pot and Shredded Beef Tenderloin in Black Pepper Sauce. I was expecting some sort of soup for the hot pot dish, but this is fried up deliciousness in a small metal pot. Apparently they're really known for these hot pots, according to our server. Food is wonderful, best chinese place ive ever been! All staff is nice but YOU GOTTA BE CAREFUL WITH ONE OF LADIES WHO WORKS THERE. My friend and I couldn't finish foods so, I asked her if we can have left over food for to go. The lady took our dishes and brought them back in containers. Next day when we opened the containers, half of the foods were missing, it was more than half. I mean, who does that? Stealing left over foods? Their action is unacceptable. Gotta admit we we're a little surprised when the doorbell rang within 15 mins of ordering, but then again we live maybe 3-4 blocks away. But OMG, we thought we'd tried what we considered "the best canadianized Chinese food" around Vancouver until now! :-P The food was all nice and HOT, almond chicken breaded ratio was perfect (anything deep fried doesn't taste like it's been cooked in old cooking oil, which is unfortunately common among East Vans Chinese food places) Chicken chow mein was perfect, full of flavour, not greasy! And prawns tasted so yummy n fresh :) I almost never review right away and I'm writing this within 15-20mins of devouring that sweet n heavenly food! How did we miss you Rose Garden?! Match made in heaven I'd say, as my favorite Chinese food restaurant of all time as a child was the (now closed) Jade Garden in Prince George, BC. This is my go to Chinese restaurant. I've been dining here for 2 years and havent had a bad meal. For a 6 month time frame I was there almost twice a week because of a hectic work life. I've never been disappointed with the food and I go there for the food. I gave them 4 stars simply because they are a hold in the wall meaning it's not fancy or decorated nicely. Anything deep fried is good here. But I love their seafood. If your budget allows it have their lobster with dark soy. The lobster is deep fried and then tossed in the dark soy, green onions, onions and ginger and garlic. It is absolutely to die for!! You can also have crab and fish done this way. Tilapia done this way is excellent. On a cold night we love to have their lamb hot pot. Its best for 4-6 people. Its a a huge pot of lamb, shitake mushroom, siu choy and bean curd. They also have a chicken hot pot that is great as well. The broth is a bunch of different Chinese herbs. It warms your entire body and helps get the blood flowing. Don't mistake their hot pot for stone pot dishes! There is a difference especially when it comes to the lamb! The stone pot one is still good though so even if you get it by mistake it's still no loss! If you go after 9pm you can get their stone pot rice. Anyone who's ever had it in their lifetime should have it here! The rice is so flavorful and they aren't cheap with the toppings. It takes 30-45 minutes to make which is the way it's suppose to be done so the bottom layer of the rice does stick to the pot and is crispy read more

Their crab special comes with a special $ 8.00 verbal extra cost and then you don't even get a full crab . . . . our came out with only one front claw . . . . what you have here is a tired Cantonese restaurant who has no idea about how pathetic they have become. The table of 8 next to us brings along their own bottle of Rye Whiskey and management are OK with this. this place has an outdated looking dining area with little character. some of the floors and chairs are creaky. i can't stop thinking about the weirdly large, abandoned front fence patio area. at least the restaurant appears clean. i don't recommend coming here for large groups. they don't appear very experienced in large groups. the service practices here are questionable and our visit was full of many surprises but not the good kind. when we asked for iced water we received a pitcher of ICE CUBES. pretty bizarre. the other guests were confused and just poured it into the cup. the ice cubes went everywhere. hilarity ensued. later, one of the waitresses dipped her finger into our water and splashed it while she picked up our food. she didn't apologize/offer to replace it, as we had to complain about it. some of the glass cups that we were given had smears on them. not too clean. When our lobster came, we did not get any moist towelettes nor crackers so we had to chew the hard shells with our teeth. it was quite a messy workout! my fingers were really dirty after. only after that i found out that they gave only ONE cracker and a bowl of water for our large group of about 20. we also ordered fried rice but it didn't arrive until the very end which was strange. As for food quality taste-wise, it is about average. nothing really stood out, even the lobster. some of the dishes here bland, some were a bit too salty. one truly bizarre thing that happened was when we ordered our spare ribs, fried fish and jelly fish, they were all combined together into one messy and soggy Frankenstein of a dish (see pic). soggy deep fried silverfish is no bueno! on the bright side, our desserts which consisted of sweet tapioca pie and red bean dessert were pretty good. overall, we didn't feel like guests in a restaurant. if you want something in a large group, you need to request a lot of common sense things directly to the server. you'll make an effort to ask for more utensils too or else you'll be twiddling you thumbs waiting forever because they won't check on you. 2.5 read more

Rose Garden is our #1 place for good cantonese comfort food near Metrotown. We are always a group of 4-5 and always order the dinner combo- Pick your 4 dishes and you get a cooked crab in a delicious sauce. A really great place for big groups of people, since most of the tables are the large round tables with the lazy susan. The owners are super friendly and recognize a familiar face. I have been coming for 5 years, and the people who introduced me to here have been going far, far longer. That's the result of good food and quality service. Went there last night for dinner with a party of 9 and had ala carte dishes ... Food is fresh and awesome. Decor is okay, staff is attentive even though we were there on a most unusually busy night. We had Soup (cannot remember the name) .Peking Duck, Garlic Crabs, Sweet and Sour Pork, Beef with Kailan, Jellyfish and Char Siew, Fried Chicken, Steamed Bak Choy, Noodles, Fried Spicy Calamari, Tofu and Fish in Claypot and another duck dish and the price came up to $140.00. Holy Canoly ... What a bargain ... the dishes were big and we didn't even have time to finish one dish before the next ones are out and on the table. I think that was a mistake because we ended up with generic fast food type Chinese food. Large portions, super greasy, and lots of msg. I'd consider trying it again but definitely staying away from anything on their combo plates. Everyone else at the restaurant were in large groups of 10 or more... Big chinese restaurant on Kingway and pretty good one. We ordered 2 quails, snails, chinese brocoli, szechuan eggplants, and century eggs congee. Everything was really good. The quails were pretty big (for quails anways...) The snails were smaller than I expected but tasty. The eggplants were delicious and so was the congee. The portion are pretty big too, so either order lightly or be ready to take some home :) Although the waitress spoke little english, the service was quick and courteous. This restaurant is super overrated. I went there to eat because one of the reviews says Rose Garden is the best place for canto food in Vancouver. That is absolutely a lie! Food was very salty and over priced. There are tons of other restaurants that serve much better and yummier food. No reservation necessary! I went there to eat at around 7:30-8, nobody was there! I have only eaten here twice but both times the food was delicious and the portions were a very good size. But the one complaint I have about this place is the food is way more expensive then most other places. I regularly buy a half duck at restaurants and stores in my area and found the prices range from $10-$11.50, but at this place the price is now $15, thats quite the price difference. The menu is quite extensive so you have a big variety of things to chose from, but its quite hard to ask questions if you only speak english. When I asked about a specific dish and asked if it was vegetables and they said yes so I ordered it, when I got it, it was noodles not vegetables. I have gone in there and seen dead fish floating in the tanks, and they arent the fish that you look at for decoration, they were the ones they serve as dinner! read more

My older aunties and relatives love it here, and they are super picky, hard to please and over critical. Cantonese food doesn't get any more authentic than this.
