We only ordered 3 items on a weekday late morning. We had Radish Cakes in XO sauce, Dimsum Ham Sui Gok and Siumai with shrimp and pork. We wanted the Fried Squab, a specialty, but they were not available. But just these 3 items alone were cooked to perfection. We've been to a lot of restaurants, especially in Richmond, but the food here s awesome. It's the best Ham sui gok I've eaten in my life---piping hot, crunchy outside and juicy inside. The radish cakes...perfect, slight crust outside and moist inside. The portions are generous. The service is professional and attentive. She did her best to speak English, but pointing to the menu was enough. The exterior is not particularly attractive and the parking limited. Glad we were there on a weekday. Koon Bo Restaurant is located in Fraser st in Vancouver. It's in a strip mall so parking is limited and difficult to get. Very tight parking and has an hour limit. Food is awesome at this place. We come here for house special Chinese salad and roasted squab. This time we tried to order squab but they did not have it, It is recommended to place a reservation if you think you will order it. We had dimsum and boy oh boy, the pork and shrimp dumpling was so generous, large plump serving and 5 pieces per order. Usual order in other dimsum places would only be 4. Also got ham Sui goi, my favorite thing to eat. So good, filling is so flavorful, crunch to bite and so warm when served. It's so crunchy and soft inside. Last thing we had was a chef's special - stir fried daikon with spicy XO sauce. The daikon was so soft inside, very tasty and just enough saltiness. All so so good! Highly recommend this place. Clean and cool place. Air con was on! Perfect for warm weather outside. Flor was carpeted so you don't feel the stickiness in usual places. The server is very pleasant and very nice. I haven't been back to this restaurant for at least 15 years. I was surprised that it still exists. It is located right across from Mountainview cemetery. It has been around for at least over 30 years. The restaurant is quite small and parking is very limited. There are pay street parking and residential free parking if you can find any. The food itself was pretty good. Prices are slightly cheaper than other place and portion size is quite big. We were a table of 15. I came here with my cousins and aunts and we ordered a lot. We had more than enough food but when my cousin came to ordering, the server kept on saying it was not enough when it was clearly way more than enough. The restaurant's decor is not bad. The soup has too much Auricularia heimuer that making the taste so bitter that we were lucky to order just a small size. I can find few of the duck meat The food quality meets the average level, "Marinated Jellyfish and Shredded Chicken " is "good ". Honey Garlic pork chops have a lot of bones. Overall the price of the food is a bit overpriced from my experience. I will definitely try their BBQ pork (suckling pig) next time which is an expensive item and customers are highly recommended. Lastly,can you imagine there were only two waitresses serving in a full house condition? I am sure this restaurant is affordable to hire one more full time helper to solve the unnecessary slow and forgotten order of the service. Was introduced to this place as a daytime dim sum place and it was good. After a few visits, tried it for Sunday dinner and it was very good. The place was packed and Suki, who runs it was running. Busy, noisy and delicious. The heaping platters kept coming. They offer several combination meals and an extensive a la carte menu. Peking duck and lettuce wrap were excellent. My favourite dim sum dishes are the deep fried pork dumplings (ham sui gok) and the shrimp paste with eggplant and Koon Bo by far makes those the best in Vancouver in my opinion! The shrimp paste and eggplant dish has a light coating of batter on the outside to give it a nice crisp. The pork dumpling is crispy on the outside and perfectly soft and chewy on the inside for my soft mouth. It's incredibly well-fried. I also really like the salted egg yolk custard bun.. Eat it while it's still hot! My brother says it's "life changing." Even my partner who doesn't like salted egg still thought the filling was okay. If you order a certain amount, you get free plain rice rolls which are really yummy! All the other dishes I tried range from good to bad. DO NOT get the egg tarts, Trust Me. I'll continue coming back here to get my delicious favourites since those are all I order anyway haha. Service was typical Cantonese restaurant service. It was extremely slow on a Saturday morning! One of the top restaurants for roasted squab in Vancouver! Sun Sui Wah is apparently ranked #1 but I've been told it's debatable. My family has been coming here for years and are usually sure to come by at least once every time we are in town. We preordered squabs when making the reservation to ensure we'd be able to have some. The food here is solid. We had their west lake beef soup and it was literally the best one I've ever had. Honestly can't really remember what else we ordered beside the squab but everything was really good. The squab here is also the best. The skin was roasted enough to be crispy but not dry and the meat was juicy and bursting with flavor. Definitely got my hands dirty trying to get all the meat off the bones. It's so good my cousins from Toronto always order extras just to hand carry them on the flight home for their extended family. I can't wait to be back for our next family dinner here! read more

My friends and I enjoyed eating here last night. Parking was easy, they have a parking lot in the front. I showed up a bit early and our table was already set. We were showed to the table and our server recommend some specials of the day. We decided on getting a oyster each. On the phone I have already made an order for their award winning pigeon and winter melon soup. And it was one of the best I've had in a long time. There were 8 of us, we each had at least one bowl of soup and we only finished half the soup! Wouldn't recommend on getting the soup unless you have a bigger group. The food came out at a good pace. Ok I know the reviews aren't stellar here, but we actually had a fantastic experience and it was one of our favorite meals on our Vancouver trip. The food is phenomenal. The lobster with rice was so delicious and flavorful. The winter melon soup was creative (served in a carved winter melon) and tasty. The fried tofu was perfectly crispy. And the tapioca pudding was just right to top off the meal. Service was really good for us - the waitress was attentive and made sure we were kept updated on our food when needed. She was really nice and had a great attitude. Ambiance is nothing special, pretty typical Chinese restaurant vibes in a strip mall across from a cemetery lol, but the food will make you forget where you are. They got the different packages on sale recently and we tried $148 for two crabs and 3 other dishes. As usual, we must order the shredded chicken which is as good as usual. Thereafter, we ordered the minced tofu and fried beef... all tasted good with good portion. Yes they do make a great chicken salad that they are known for but the service is going downhill! Waitresses are okay but the cashier is so rude! She came running out with the bill to my father that he didn't leave enough tip. Sorry, we only had 4 Dimsum dishes. The service was okay but nothing to write home about. The restaurant was not full. We will never go back when people demand a bigger tip. We get way better service and food elsewhere. - 5 stars for poor attitude! We used to come here and order take out from here for fancier family dinners quite often but noticed that the quality had slipped so this is our first retry of their food in quite awhile. We got the most popular dishes being the shredded chicken salad which was delicious with plenty of chicken meat, tangy pickled veggies and did not feel too heavy since the wonton strips come on the side. I ate a huge portion of this but what my family loved was their deep fried tofu and fish puffs that were soft and delicate accompanied by a bite of the honey garlic pork chops in a crispy shell (that remained crispy an hour later!). We also got their beef stir fry with gourmet sauce. My dad thought the beef was very soft but i found it overly sauced and gloopy. Overall, the food isnt cheap but portions are quite large and food is generally tasty. The signature dishes are a must order for a good reason. read more

We came in for a family dinner on a weeknight. The restaurant looks like it's renovated. It looks way brighter and the menu books look brand new when compared to the time we came in a couple of months ago. The staff and menu items look the same so I don't think they changed owners. We ordered the famous shredded chicken again. Sweet and sour boneless pork, fish maw soup and seafood on steamed egg whites. Chicken with black bean sauce on crispy egg noodles. I was quite impressed that eventhough restaurant was half full but the dishes came out pretty quickly. The shredded chicken appetizer was a good size for 5 people. There were lots of pickled vegetables and crispy wontons but there could be more jellyfish for sure, this dish was $21.00. The menu indicates they used half a chicken but I don't think that's true. The steamed egg was not over done and it was super smooth. I was pleasantly surprised that they actually used big prawns while most places use the baby tasteless shrimp. The chow mein was very crispy with lots of chicken. Overall we spent $100 for 5 people. And I would come back to try their other dishes like the Cod 2 ways for $62.00 (fish soup and cod stir fried with vegetables) This restaurant is located in a small strip mall with limited parking but street parking can easily be found. 1 star was taken off because they don't take MasterCard. The restaurant charge different prices on the menu items depending on if you are paying by cash or debit/credit card. For example, one of their signature dish "roasted squab", despite the fact they put the price on their special board as $19.8, they change the price to $26.50 if you pay debit card. The waitress told me the restaurant has the right to charge the customers differently based on the method of payment. I know some restaurants are not 100% honestly on their taxes but I never saw one restaurant does it so obviously. It's been a while since I had such an extravagant cantonese meal but totally worth the experience. There are a few typical Cantonese cuisines which are not available anywhere else. We ordered: -Seafood soup cooked in a whole winter melon (over $100): this is my favorite and it has to be ordered a few hours early. The soup is super delicious as its FULL of seafood: scallops,crab meat, shrimp...Instead of using sesemi oil or any cooking oil, they top it up with a few slices of roast duck breast. Yum yum.. The soup is rather large and easily feed a table of 8. Losbser and sticky rice on lotus leaf (over $100) - I had it else where before and much better. I found it a bit greasy here, I think they added too much oil when mixing the rice which spoiled it a bit. Lobster is good though but rice is really the main thing for this dish as that's where all flavor goes. Roast squab ($52 or $56 for 2) - soooo good. Cooked to perfection, IMO. But I fount it too pricy. Cripy stuffed tofu and honey garlic rib (over $40 for the combo) - not really worthy. Both yummy though. Shredded chicken ($20ish) - it's chicken breast mixed with jellyfish, sweet cabbage, crispy noodle, etc. This is one of their chef special too. Really huge portion so you want to take it as an entree. Service is not up to par as all you get pretty much is taking order and getting your food delivered. Also, there's limited parking space. Overall it's a great restaurant to treat youself and your special ones for a fancy Chinese meal during special occasion. read more

This oddly-placed strip mall corner joint is an old family favorite, although with a lot of non-Chinese press and clientele the prices have steadily increased over the years. Some dishes we order regularly: * Hand-shredded chicken * Roast duck * Curry roast duck and taro pot * Braised eggplant pot (good, but oily) * Stir-fried beef with pickled vegetables * Squab * Congee Even the plain white congee tastes really good. Once, when my grandma really pressed the waitress for the secret ingredient and finally asked whether there's MSG, the waitress replied, "Well, honestly, do you think plain white congee would taste so good on its own?" So, I figured the answer was yes. But that's fine with me! It would be nice to see Koon Bo renovate at some point to maintain a competitive edge over so many newer Chinese restaurants with, shall we say, a more pleasant atmosphere. Hmmm ... If I had given a review on Koon Bo on my few past visits more than 6 months ago, it would have been a 4-star review. Based on the dishes we had for dinner tonight, I'm not sure if I would return to the restaurant. My 2-star rating is relative to what other choices are available in Vancouver. If it were in a town where Chinese restaurants were rare, I would have given it 4 stars. There were 5 of us in our party and we ordered: 1. Dried fish maw and crab meat soup 2. House special shredded chicken - the infamous dish that made it into Van Mag's best 100 for 2008. 3. Pan fried prawns with spicy salt 4. Chinese broccoli with squid 5. BBQ duck The soup lacked flavour - any flavour. The flavour of the chicken dish was good but much of the jellyfish was replaced with a preserved vegetable of similar appearance but the texture and taste aren't quite the same. The prawns lacked spice and salt. The shells did not have the heat, flavour and crispy texture of just coming out of a hot wok. Although most people would not eat the shells, they contribute to the senses when you take a bite to peel the shell off the flesh. The Chinese broccoli was overcooked. The stems were tender rather than crunchy. The flavour of the duck was good but the skin was somewhat stale as if the duck's been sitting in the kitchen in a warmer for a while. Again, the dishes were not horrible but there's no need for me to return when there are many other good choices available e.g. Prince at Grandview & Renfrew (similar price range) or any of the Kirins for more elegant settings. read more

Service on Chinese New Years was terrible. Clearly all the staff cared about were the takeout orders as there were at least a dozen lined up for takeout the entire 90 minutes we were there. Service for tables was awful. We got 2/6 dishes ordered within the first 15 minutes. But these were dishes that did not require cooking (1/2 BBQ duck and cold shredded chicken appetizer). No other dishes came out during the next 75 minutes despite enquiries and complaints. When staff had no idea when our food was coming out we left. We never even got an apology. Additionally, the size of each squab is a big difference (much smaller) in comparison to what I have from other stores. First thing first, I am very familiar about the ownership before they split from their sis diner 'Koon Lok' back in the 90s. I know the family well and how they claim fame and its current success based on their food quality, hard work and dedication. In my opinion KP still holding the title the best 'roast squab' in Vancouver or anywhere in N America. Otherwise all the reviews from this site are very accurate. Meaning this is a wrong place to go if one may expect 'table services' because there is none. The patrons go there to 'worship' only about their food and in most cases, are willing to roll up their sleeves; self-serve about everything except the cooking. Nevertheless this is not the reason I rant about this place. Time sure has changed and the owner is arrogant because they now hold the 'monopoly' and believing the customers (suckers) will pay anything and everything just to indulge and will never question I was there (3 of us) for a quick weeknight dinner. Two squabs, shred chicken, fried tofu and honey garlic pork, bowl of noodle and some stir fried vegi. The cost was $175 before tip. I reviewed the bill and it was more than a shocker. The roast squab was a whopping '$27 per squab and the owner has their own way to interpret the differences from the menu. Buyers beware that what it was said in their new menu is different from what they will charge you. Example their feature dish - fried tofu and garlic pork was perceived to be one dish on the pic and on the menu. However and in fact they don't tell you it is two separate dish and of course double the charges. The cost for the combo is actually $48 just for this one dish, in which and I believe the most expensive in the entire lower mainland. The owner even has the ball to ask me to pay them cash, the excuse just to cut down the 'admin' cost. How about in my own interpretation .... tax evasion. Whether you believe or not, there are the top end Chinese restaurants such as Dynasty, Kirin or Red Star will charge less or equivalent but they provide an exception atmosphere and good services so I have to ask myself, will I repeat Koon Po and why? I am very disappointed as a loyal follower to this restaurant for over 25 years they would 'gauge' every penny they could squeeze from a customer. I will miss the 'roast squab' but I sure don't want to become one myself. read more
