You'll definitely want to bring cash because I don't think they accept credit cards and I really like the vibe inside the place which is definitely a lot of older locals and it's very relaxed and low-key. But note that if you have green hair or hate America, you probably would not fit in well. customer warning I have purchased a whole apple pie from K&L for years, but something has changed the apple pie crust was the hardest I ever had. if I did not know better I would swear it was left out for months. The inside of the apple pie has changed as well it had a horrible bitter taste and spices unbalance! If you get a pie check and taste it before you leave. Everything else was excellent !! Hubby and I find ourselves in Chester, VA every month. We stumbled upon K and L and now we are looking forward to our next trip! We walked in and immediately felt like regulars. We were warmly greeted and the menu was explained to us. I had the BBQ chicken and Hubby had the fried chicken. DELICIOUS MOIST JUICY LOVED IT. I have eaten there since Kenny and Linda opened K&L, and purchased food to serve 80 people on special occasions, in addition to my personal meals there. This place is established. They are all about the nostalgic home cooking offerings. They are consist. They are affordable. Lastly they are friendly. A few years ago (before I was Yelping) I ate at/from K&L several times as I would pass through Hopewell. So when I stumbled across K&L in Yelp a few days ago, I decided to try them again. Sitting at the bar, as usual, I asked for a cup of Chili... Nope. Chili is only on Friday. Okay, I'll try a Pork BBQ Sandwich, minced, and Onion Rings. Onion Rings came up first. The waitress asked if I wanted Ranch with that. I said, "Do you have bleu cheese?" She did and gave me a small cup. Onion Rings were good, but not stellar. At least they were made from scratch. I'd order/eat them again. After 2 or 3 of the Onion Rings, the BBQ Sandwich came up. I guess it's the local custom to bisect your buns, because it was cut in half. Actually a rather pathetic BBQ Sandwich. Somewhat smallish... the amount of Slaw is adequate, but the entire thing was rather dry. Adding BBQ Sauce helped a bit. The flavor was good, but had little depth. The lunch cost me $7.99 +$3 tip. All the waitresses were friendly and smiling; the cashier was rather aloof. Parking was easy in the dedicated lot. Since the last time I was at K&L, they have changed their menu and interior. The old menu, IIRC, was a several page book; the current menu is a single laminated sheet. And previously there were printed signs of a sexist nature; now there are signs promoting Trump, Guns, Guts... I don't know which is worse. Other reviews of K&L praise their Fried Chicken, so I'd like to give them a second chance. Perhaps in a month or so. read more

My hometown fav! I've been gone from Hopewell for almost 29 years but must eat here whenever I visit. I've been around the world & all over the US & have not found any BBQ ribs as tender & tasty as K&L. I like the pulled pork as well. A family members recommended the hot dogs so I'll try to order one soon. It's just so hard when there are ribs to eat! The sides are pretty good as well. One reason this isn't a 5-star review is bc the potato salad needs a tad bit more salt. The ladies in the front for takeout are so kind & friendly. Another reason not a 5-star is bc they only accept cash. Although there is an ATM machine in the lobby ($2.50 surcharge) it's just more convenient to pay with credit/debit. The absolute, most horrible lunch I have eaten at in a long time! This food was horrible and let's not get started on how horrible the atmosphere was. The pork sandwich taste soo porky it tasted like I was bitting into an actual pig and the bbq sauce taste like straight vinegar. They don't take debit or credit cards soo make sure you go by the atm before. I wish I could give this place 0 stars. Ok. First of all I truly do not understand why this place has so many stars. I grant you it is popular, but I don't get it. My stepmother wanted to get some stuff from there so I went in to get it for her. I will say that all the cooks were wearing their masks. That part made me happy. Most of the servers had them on properly. But, of course, three were wearing them on their chins. The food. The Ham biscuits seemed to have some kind of deli ham on them....in Virginia!!! And the biscuits had no flavor. The onion rings had zero flavor and I am not exaggerating in the least. My first job in the restaurant business was making onion rings. It isn't culinary science. I don't eat coke slaw so I couldn't say. The bbq beans had decent flavor. The potato salad was ok...mainly because it doesn't have a ton of onions. After waiting for 15 minutes, we finally get our order put in. 47 minutes later we get a little plate with a scoop of BBQ and 12 french fries. I thought I was going to have to go into the kitchen and ask for butter and biscuits, that were supposed to come with the meal. Another community staple. The K&L crowd is loyal to no end, and that's highly evident each time we go for lunch. No frills here, but tons of my fondest childhood memories spent having dinners with my family. Used their catering service for my rehearsal dinner (we had a whole backyard picnic vibe)! Allow me to start with the negative, since this is more of a personal taste then a down shot at K & L. The BBQ is vinegar based. Something I'm not a fan of, so fair warning to anyone considering this place with similar taste to me. Upon this discovery, I quickly scoured the menu for reasonable other options. Of which there were PLENTY! My waitress suggested either the Wingdings or Chicken and Dumplings (Thursdays only), so I decided for the smaller portion of both! :-) You get two sides with the Wingdings (fried chicken wings, non-sauced), so I kept it simple with fries and coleslaw. The fries were pretty generic, but nothing dis-tasteful about them. And the coleslaw was scary because it had a vinegar taste to it. A new one on me honestly... but I didn't particularly enjoy that. The wings themselves were VERY good. Super moist and juicy, lots of delicious crunch on the outside, and seasoned just enough to be good, but limited enough to sauce them yourself (bbq style) and not combat any flavors. My "extra" side, being my cup of Chicken and Dumplings was good, but not amazing. I only had a few very small pieces of chicken, and the dumplings didn't have that homemade taste to them. And I've had it quite a bit homemade. Again, it was good, but not what I would have imagined for homemade Chicken and Dumplings. I washed it all down with a sweet tea, which was quite tasty, and I even grabbed one to-go because I was enjoying it so much. Then finished the whole thing off with some banana pudding for dessert. It tasted a bit store bought, but wasn't bad all in all. While it wasn't an AMAZING trip, I did think it was tasty and would actually repeat should I be in the area. A bigger order of wingdings perhaps, or maybe something else which is hiding on the menu ready to be gobbled up. Definitely not a bad choice. read more

Most of the staff seemed very friendly even while busy, however, the cashier appeared bothered by my youth and the fact that I didn't know they were cash only (it's 2019).
