Tacos de carne asada with old radish slices
    Isis B.

This was a DoorDash pick up order. Upon arrival the place looked clean and not too packed because it was 11am. I went up to the counter and I was greeted by the cashier/server. She grabbed my order and asked me to approve the order on my phone before leaving. As I got to my car the bag I was given did not feel like $30 worth of food (6 tacos de carne asada and a torta w/ fries) Instead I was given 2 tacos and the carne asada torta with fries. Went back inside a little frustrated because I had ordered this in advance so I wouldn't have to waste time waiting for my food. Anyway I get my remaining 4 tacos, no apology or anything for the inconvenience. The tacos were ok, I've had better. Definitely stingy with the meat. Very disappointed in the old crusty radish slices I was given. The torta was soggy and no flavor same goes for the fries. First and last time.

Chicken Pupusa, chicken fajitas, corn tortillas (4, that's one more than other places). Great food and a lot of cool stuff in the store.

Hole in the wall you'd probably miss driving by, inside they have a store and a restaurant. The fajitas and pupusas were bannnnginnnn. The guy making the food was super friendly. Been here several times and would recommend it to anyone driving through town. Not too pricey and great portions

3 tacos, carne asada, al pastor, lengua.

Tacos are great! I've been meaning to visit this place and I regret not going here sooner. I would definitely go back here again and will try another dishes they have. Well priced tacos too for that much sides of roasted veggies and sauce. Please make sure to try them ASAP!

The taco shop in this market is called Taqueria El Gordo because the owner is known as El Gordo, the fat one. He lives up to the nickname and uses his girth as a selling point as to how good his wife's food is. On that point he isn't wrong. So far I've had gorditas and multiple huaraches here. The fact that the variety on offer goes beyond the standard pupusas and tacos of all the other Salvadoran places in Central Virginia is your first good sign. Everything is made fresh and to order (you can watch his wife cook your meal up for you). If you want a drink or some snacks to go with your meal, they have all of that in the market as well as shampoo, phone chargers, etc. They are called La Bodega after all. This is by far the best shop/restaurant combo in Hopewell. After I went here once I'm consistently making up reasons to go to Hopewell to grab food here.

Best AUTHENTIC Mexican food I've had in Va! Highly recommend! Decent selection of food.

    Fish, chicken and beef tacos!

Food tasted authentic. However chicken and steak on the tacos were a little dry IMO. Very tasty though. The food also has a good selection of Hispanic foods that you cannot find in most markets.

First time visiting. Coming from FL I have not had much Mexican food since leaving my hometown in NM. We had Tacos al pastor and tortas de jamón; this place did not disappoint!! Environment is clean and calm. This place also has a market where you can find authentic Mexican products.

This spot was very good! I loved the al pastor tacos and the pupusa. They also have some good sodas such as Fresca

I noticed the ice cream/yogurt spot nearby was hopping. There was a person asking for change outside the front door. We were greeted by an enthusiastic host and seated immediately at a booth up front. The server came by within seconds and brought us water and place settings. We decided to get the chips and salsa for an appetizer and a pair of melting chimichangas for entrees. I can't resist some chorizo and steak. My partner got the chimichanga without chorizo and with chicken. The ambiance was colorful with beautifully painted murals on each wall, and the atmosphere was undeniably loud. There were lots of patrons. The place was packed, even at the bar, so your mileage may vary. We received our orders within minutes of each other, so there wasn't much of a wait time. The chips and salsa were homemade, fresh, warm, and delicious (muy rico). Same for the entrees; exactly what I want in a Mexican food restaurant. The chorizo and steak were well-cooked, seasoned, and chopped finely, but not ground. I was in heaven with that chimichanga. We had to take home leftovers. The next night, heated in the oven at 325 for 30 minutes, they were similarly excellent. The night ended without dessert, sadly (too full). However, the server was quick and efficient, and he was always around to fill water and bring anything we needed throughout the meal. Great experience overall. We will definitely return here whenever we have a hankering for some good Mexican food at reasonable prices. I can recommend this place to anyone who appreciates hearty and filling Mexican food.

The ambiance can be described as eclectic and casual. It's great for big groups and relaxed lunches. There's a variety of menu options for food and drink. Our server was nice, but she didn't really answer our questions about the menu or substitutions, which was a little inconvenient. Also, we kept having to ask for utensils and napkins, which made our food get a bit cold. The pineapple habanero margarita tasted like spicy pineapple juice and was pretty expensive. It was pretty, but not worth the money. The food also was really average, but the portion sizes were good for sharing. The huitlacoche tacos were a little bland and soggy, the chicken chipotle tacos had a good sauce but were also soggy and the fajitas did not have enough seasoning. Not a restaurant that I would come back to, but I liked it's proximity to other dessert places nearby.

We were visiting from DC, which is objectively a more expensive area, and yet the price per taco was higher than individual tacos at our favorite taco chain in DC, especially for the shrimp and, especially curiously, the cauliflower. And then the portions of shrimp and cauliflower in those tacos was pretty disappointing. Also, very fried. Nachos and quesadillas seemed like a better value than tacos so, while my husband got the aforementioned tacos, I got the nachos without any added protein. Much better value - huge portion at a small price. Some odd choices though. There was an appropriate amount of cheese (beer cheese, which seemed appropriate given its location inside a beer hall) but a really small amount of other toppings (beans, corn, pico I think?) relative to the huge amount of raw jalapeño slices. The dish relies really heavily on jalapeño for flavor and freshness, and I like jalapeño, but these woud be more appropriately described as "jalapeño and cheese on chips" than nachos, IMO. If you love raw jalapeño you'll be in heaven but for those who are accustomed to jalapeños being an accent, this is A LOT. It was like the primary ingredient after chips, even above cheese. All in all, it's fine if you're in the area and want tacos or need food with your beer but is it somewhere I would go out of my way to visit? Probably not.
