I went here with my boyfriend for a weekday dinner after hearing so many people talk this place up. Not only did it not live up to the hype, it was a huge disappointment. We came into the restaurant and was ushered into a booth of our choice, no big deal. We were ready to order but the waitress took forever to attend to us. We decided to try 10 wings, half spicy and half soy, as well as the seafood pancake. The pancake came out first and it was beyond disappointing. The seafood on it was old and smelly, some of the seafood even had sand in it! We didn't care to finish it and thought it would be better if we just saved our stomachs for the chicken. We had been waiting for maybe 10 minutes after the pancake came out and thought it was taking a ridiculously long time for the food to come out. We looked around for the waitress, and she was standing in the other diningroom, back to us, on her phone, occasionally taking a break from her phone to clean the table. We couldn't even get her attention because the music was loud and blasting profanity. Finally she finished cleaning maybe after 15 minutes of standing there, oblivious to the rest of the restaurant and came back to check the kitchen. Sure enough, she came out with the plate of chicken - who knows how long our food had been sitting there under the heat lamp. The chicken was okay, flavor is nothing special. The chicken was on the bigger side so everything tasted very meaty. It would be better if they used smaller wings to bring out the flavors more. Spicy was not bad either, pretty good kick yet decent flavor, but it still had the same problem of being too meaty. Then came the final straw, I saw an ant on my boyfriend's shirt and thought it was just from the day earlier. But then I started noticing ants crawling around on the wall. We thought we should just leave, but the waitress is nowhere to be found. My boyfriend decided to go to the bathroom to wash his hands and when he came back, told me that the waitress was sitting in a room on her phone. Him walking by might have reminded her that she had a job to do and I saw her rush into the kitchen and came out with dishes of chicken for the other tables. We got out check and hurried out of there, patting ourselves down for fear of bringing ants into my car. I don't think I will be returning, ever, and hope management gets their act together and do better quality control of their food and service. read more

The restaurant is now open for dining in again. We got the half soy sauce, half spicy combo and the chicken was awesome. Very crispy and light exterior but very juicy interior. My guess is that they steamed the chicken first, then battered and fried. I love the soy sauce glaze, it was a bit sweet, salty, sticky and very shiny on the outside. The spicy ones were surprisingly spicy. Also got the cheese stick and tteokbokki, which were both good. They also have a variety of beers to choose from. Stumbled upon this place when me and my bf were exploring Annandale a little bit. We did not eat here but we drank soju and I'll have to say that compared to all of the other Korean bars/restaurants. My family and I come here (used to come here) on Sundays because it's the only Chi Mc open in the area. You let that poor waitress serve 60 people at once, 10 tables, PLUS phone orders!? I've already watched 3 people, scratch that, 6 people leave because they weren't served in time. If your last waiter quit and you don't have the manpower to run your restaurant then you should close at least half of the restaurant so your waitress isn't serving that many people. Amazing chicken. That's the only thing to come here for. Service is always a bit of a struggle whether they are empty or packed (rare). Nice people who are generally working hard - just seems like they don't have well defined norms and training for staff. Sides are mediocre in our limited experience. Not terrible but definitely not what to come here for. Easy 5 stars if they can standardize and train things a bit more. Good example: randomly the lights are insanely bright on one visit versus another. Normally this place is a 5 star but tonight we tried the garlic butter wings instead of the usual crispy chicken and they were HORRIBLE. There was very little meat on the wings and after waiting 65 minutes instead of the 40 minutes I was told- I am disappointed in the service. I come here with my best friend about 2 times per month and I love it. The food is really REALLY good. I usually get the wing 1/2 and 1/2 combo. The spicy sauce is really hot but very tasty. The beer/alcohol prices are very affordable and they have really good deals. Great place to go with a large group! Also, I never caught her name but the young woman with the glasses and light colored hair is the NICEST waitress. She always remembers our orders and makes us feel at home while we're there. I wash myself with a rag on a stick. I work from home so my work attire is as you can imagine, rather lax. That being said, the moment that I started buying sweatpants from Costco to use as as a 'uniform' of some sort was the same moment that I realized that I had officially given up on myself. Never one to do things halfheartedly, I decided to celebrate my bulk purchase of stretchy pants with some Korean Fried Chicken. This was my first time dining in at at Korean Fried Chicken joint so I was surprised to find out that a lot of the people who come here call ahead and place their order since double and triple frying apparently takes a lot of time. My friend and I decided to hunker down for the next 40 minutes with an order of their fries and we were not disappointed. One order comes in a huge basket and they are extremely addicting with their crisp outsides and soft, potatoey guts. This was a meal in itself! We decided to do the half and half combo with legs and thighs. The legs were pretty much real drumsticks and were extra meaty. The soy garlic had a candy like texture and the crust was fried to perfection. My friend raved over the hot wings but they were just a bit too spicy for me. They have lots of big screen televisions and a happy hour that goes on during the weekends so this would be the perfect place to watch football in a quiet environment that serves extra delicious game day food. Allow me to assuage everyone's fears that the Bon Chon Annandale location is gone. It's still there, just operating under the nom de plume of Chi Mc. Seriously, this place is almost exactly the same -- just a little shinier, newer, and generally updated (all good things!). I have no idea as to WHY the rebrand took place, only that the food itself remains as mouth-watering and delicious as before. I've talked about my love for this perfect, addictive Korean fried chicken I've eaten in two separate reviews on Yelp, so it hardly bears repeating... but I will anyway. This chicken is SO good. Crispy, juicy, not in the least bit sticky... order more than you think you'll want because you WILL WANT IT. As any other review will tell you, you want to call ahead to order your chicken even if you're dining in. A good 45 minutes to an hour before you plan on eating. You can order additional food once you get there (although for some reason, fries always take a ridonkulously long time, so you might as well order those when you order your chicken.) We also love the Duk Bok Yi (or something like that) dish from here -- glutinous rice noodles and fish cake in a spicy sauce and is really, really tasty. The Restaurant Formerly Known as Bon Chon has undergone a bit of a remodel in addition to its rebrand, and I have to say, I'm a fan. The formerly dark and unfriendly barlike space feels relatively transformed with a fresh coat of light paint on the walls and a cool new lighting fixture above the bar. They've also taken down all the cheap laminated signs that used to advertise beer and specials, which helps the space feel clean and bright. The service seems to have improved in this location as well. Our waitress was much more attentive and it was easier to get our waters refilled and generally just a really pleasant experience. In the past, I always just assumed service would be crap here (but the food made up for it). Now I can say that it's both a delicious AND pleasant dining experience! I got both the spicy and the garlic flavor and both were quite salty, but I think I liked the garlic flavor was a better choice if you're looking for something more flavorful. The chicken is caramelized in a glaze that keeps it coated in a thick crunch. Onion rings were what they're supposed to be, so nothing to critique about it. Bon Chon takes 2nd place, mainly bc their overall flavor just doesn't compare to Chi-Mc, but they definitely have an edge when it comes to convenience (due to multiple locations). I really wish Chi-Mc would open up a location in MC (Montgomery County). Unfortunately, there's only 1 location in Annandale. I've gone numerous times for dinner and the drums are always SCRUMPTIOUS and HUGE! Lunch special drums are definitely a little smaller, but the taste is definitely still there. The wings and drumsticks here are normal size and not steroid sized like Bonchon. The barbecued chicken took a long time to come out but it was worth the wait. It had a nice hint of smokiness. The dipping sauce that came with the chicken was too sweet, but honestly I didn't mind eating the chicken without the sauce. To wash down all the chicken, we had two pitchers of draft Miller Lite. The draft beer here is chilled and pairs perfectly with the chicken. We finished the meal with spicy sea snail. This dish was refreshing to eat after consuming all the greasy fried chicken. Service was lacking, the staff were all chatting by the bar. Overall, I had an excellent experience here dining on some Korean Fried Chicken. However, I feel that food/service go hand to hand to enhance the overall experience. I know that some may disagree with me, but this is just my opinion. Okay, now the food. We ordered 20 wings total (10 soy garlic and 10 spicy soy garlic) and a basket of fries. The chicken was tasty and very crispy. I would have to say that their spicy soy garlic is probably better than Bonchons. Fries were crunchy and compliment the chicken well. The food quailty is amazing. I order mild wings, fries, and the Blue alcoholic drink. The wings were cripsy, warm, and had a sweet taste. They gave us a large amount of fries and it was delicious. They were crispy and flavorful, but they tasted similar to Costco fries, which isn't an insult (it just tasted good). The only reason i am giving it 4 stars is the darkness inside the restaurant. I have came to this restaurant multiple times around 5pm, and as you enter it just very dark inside. This is a small place with only 4 tables and an equally small bar. However, the chicken is good. I've ordered both the Soy Garlic and Spicy and both were crispy and delicious. Oh, did I mention how crispy the chicken was. :) For those complaining the spicy isn't "spicy" enough... I feel your pain, or lack there of. The "standard" spicy is what I could call "round eye" spicy, and not Latino or Asian spicy. However, my spicy comrades all is NOT lost, on the menu in small print, it says you can order extra spicy, this is what you require. Oh, and if you really want some pain (I mean heat) tell them you want it super spicy. This is what i I said to the waiter, "Ignore my round eyes, I want it really spicy! Like Habanero peppers are for kids so make it hotter than that". And did they ever, it was painful spicy yet still had all the flavor. Delicious! I actually wish they would bring back the big basket of Crinkle Cut French Fries! The seasoned fries they use now are okay, but the original potato item that was first offered was "money!" So, my SOF and I did take-out. I arrived 5 minutes earlier than their projected time of when my order would be ready. I sat at the bar near the register and noticed a long line of take-out bags full of chicken. The waitress casually notified me that my french fry order was not ready, and that I would need to wait about 10 minutes. During that time, I noticed her preparing a bag with boxed chicken but did not pay too much attention to it. I should have! After getting home, it seems that we were victim to the FIFO (first in, first out) food rotation strategy. The fries were super hot, but a lot of the chicken pieces were barely warm and the skin was not crispy at all. I understand that take-out orders tend to succumb to condensation, but Korean double-fried chicken should retain at least some crisp to it during a 10-minute commute back home. Lesson learned: don't do take-out unless you are fine with orphaned chicken. When not picking up take-out, this place deserves an A-okay 3-stars. read more

I ordered the medium soy wings which included 12 wings, pickled radish, and slaw for $14. The taste was comparable to BonChon, and maybe a bit better but definitely worth the price. I also ordered the fries with Parmesan cheese for about $6. They were incredibly delicious and crispy, and they were provided in a large amount which makes the price worth it. Straight up now tell me do I wanna eat KFC forever? Yes yes yes Chi Mc reminds me of how much I love KFC. The wings have amazing flavor, the crunchiest of the crunch, and a hefty portion white meat. They check off all the characteristics of a perfect wing - Korean or not. We also ordered the kimchi fried rice and it definitely feeds at least two as a side dish. It was very tasty, not disproportionately kimchi flavored or spicy, and the spam impeccably completes the dish.
