We tried K-Tech four or five times, with varying degrees of success on three different cars. The last (and final) time a simple brake job on a simple car became much more expensive than expected, and when asked for the details to explain the increase we were basically told some conflicting things and finally that "these things are hard to explain to a non-mechanic". What she didn't know is that I've worked in technical fields for decades, including machining and automotive work. Do not use these guys. I have a 2007 Acura and he just needed an ignition switch. They tried to get me with a full motor mount job, wiring, etc... for the tune of about $3000. The car is worth $2000. I ordered the ignition switch through them on the phone, and I told him 5 minutes later to cancel it. He called right back and they said TOO LATE. They double-charged me for the parts. Poor quality parts, poor work, does not take responsibility. Know this: when you give this business your address, they put you on a mailing list for frequent solicitations for business. I have called and spoken with the office manager about getting off this list and was told IT CAN'T BE DONE! They apparently do not control the list once you're on it, as it is managed through a third party, and they state they cannot remove you from the list. I have moved and the stupid solicitations ("free seaonal checkup" (ie, let us find what we can charge you for)?? no thanks) followed me. I do not use this garage anymore due to poor experiences in the past, but it looks like I'll have a lifetime of unwanted wasteful paper mail as a reminder of this bad experience. read more

Don't let the humble setting and small size of this shop fool you in to thinking this is a small back yard operation. K Tech is a full on modern shop. Expensive? Yes all good shops are. K-tech has obviously out grow there current location but still is the only place in town that is capable of dealing with modern cars. That's probably why they are always busy. read more

I have a 46-year-old Mercedes 200 D fintail that I will probably be buried in after I die. I had a problem with an odd vibration that made driving unsavory and I took it to three different mechanics who all told me "That's just how old cars are." Nobody could diagnose what the problem was nor were they interested in trying to figure it out, but they were happy to take my money for other repairs that they insisted my car needed. Enter K-Tech. Jack, the diesel mechanic, and Kevin, the service manager, were consistently friendly and professional. They listened to my concerns and didn't act like I was nuts. In the end Jack diagnosed two separate issues, which they fixed, one of which required an ingenious solution, due to a power steering apparatus that had been previously installed that didn't fit properly. Jack, with help from his amazing assistant, did an awesome job. My car runs like it had just left the factory in Germany back in 1967. I love driving it and couldn't be more stoked. They work on my daughters' cars now, too, and both are very satisfied. K-Tech will do a free overall inspection and let you know what they find and what it would cost to fix it, but they won't pressure you. They have free loaner cars for when your repairs take more than a day or two. They also regularly give away cars to people in need. I did drop quite a few Bennies for the repairs, but the prices were fair and worth every penny. These are not trustworthy people but they are friendly; this is a dangerous combination for the consumer. They told me that it was against the law to offer me an part for my Honda that was not made by Honda. They quoted me $1800 for a repair that ended up costing me less than $150 someplace else. read more

At first I found K-Tech agreeable and really wanted to support a local business run by women, but then I took my Ford Taurus in for a minor steering wheel noise hey handed me a long list of things needed to be done, which amounted to $2,700 and essentially replacing the entire front end. I did it because I figured it would be best to get everything done right, but after spending $2,000 to get everything done, there was a noise far worse than what I brought it in for, an awful metal-on-metal screeching noise. It was only a back plate off by a bit but it worried me so much and being away at school couldn't take it in immediately--at least they fixed it for free when I was able to take it in. But then I had my struts replaced at their suggestion, and their original estimation kept bumping up from around $400 to $600, and I didn't feel any difference, I really don't feel my car needed that part replaced. I don't plan to have my car's next tune-up done at K-Tech. Bottom line, they can do a good job with their mechanic but they also have a strong reputation for over-charging by telling you you need parts replaced that really don't need replacing--I've talked to countless other people who have had similar experiences, so this is not an isolated incident. read more

Because I live very nearby to K-Tech's new location near Ives Park in downtown Sebastopol, I have taken my cars to K-Tech for a couple of years. I like doing business in town. The first time I took my van to K-Tech they were able to diagnose and fix a car computer problem that another local shop was not able to do. It was very expensive, but I was glad to get it fixed. Everyone at K-Tech was polite, and prompt. At that point in time I would have given K-Tech a much higher review. I have become steadily less satisfied with K-Tech. As others have noted, they charge high prices for their repairs. They have found expensive-to-repair problems I didn't know I had--an oil leak in my Subaru in my case. I paid for this repair, but it will be my last. Worse, they told me that the problem I came in with--the strong smell of exhaust gases in the cabin--wasn't noticeable to their technicians. Funny, unless I drive with the windows down, everyone else can smell it. It is not at all subtle. So I paid for a diagnosis of my leaky exhaust system, but got a diagnosis for an oil leak! They have quoted me prices for other repairs that I need to have done (windshield wipers that swipe too far, air conditioning that is failing) but their estimates are so astronomical I'm just living with the problems.... I am retired and live on a fixed income. Now I am looking for a new place to have my old cars fixed. Also, someone else mentioned their mailers and email barrages. Expect to hear from K-Tech regularly if you give them you contact information! read more

We've been using K-Tech for a few years now and we have had nothing but great experiences. Our most recent visit was to repair the power steering and front end in our 2006 Nissan Quest. They were very clear on what parts needed repair and we weren't asked to pay anything over their estimate. Our repair took several days and they supplied me with a free loaner car. We were attracted by their commitment to being Green and their support of the community in addition to being a woman-owned company. They've been super responsive to our needs. We had an emergency radiator failure on the way home with 3 dogs in the car. After getting it towed to K-Tech near the end of a work day, they ordered the radiator right away so we could have the car the next day AND let us use a loaner car. I drove to Sebastopol from Pennsylvania with a friend and we had an issue a few hundred miles shy of our destination. Monica and the crew at K-Tech fixed up the car (busted water pump) for a reasonable price and then followed up a week later with a phone call. I took my Chevy Malibu back a few weeks later for a check up before heading east. They gave me this check up for free, since they guarantee all of their work. They found another issue and fixed it expeditiously ( I had been driving my car on some very rough roads). I felt safe and comfortable hitting the road and driving 3000 miles back home. I have had zero issues since visiting last November. I will add that I called 4 times (yes, four times) to ask questions about the repairs and Monica graciously and patiently answered them each time. My mom took our car to K-tech and told them her starter needed to be replaced. They quoted her a $150 diagnostic fee + labor + parts which came out to $600. This is absurdly high to begin with, changing a starter should be a $300 job, especially since we knew what the problem was already. However ,since we were already forced to pay the diagnostic fee, we decided to bite the bullet this one time, and pay too much. However, when my mom went to pay for the car they tried to charge her $800 because they said the job had taken them 3 hours. That's bullshit. It's such an easy job, I don't know if they are incompetent or dishonest but either way I am never going here again. read more

Super friendly and trustworthy. When I found a part online a lot cheaper to do the job they were totally on board with it and only charged me the labor as previously quoted. $54 to change a tail light bulb.. which I did myself in 90 seconds with one I happened to have in my glove box. Can't get over that one. Now I'm on their mailing list so I receive periodic reminders of how I don't intend to go back. I don't mind paying for good work, but if you would like to perform $1,200 worth of work on my car you'd think one light bulb wouldn't be $54. Apparently that is for the bulb and 20 minutes of labor. read more

I took my Audi A4 in for a back wash issue with the cooling system.. It kept gurgling the contents of the cooling system onto the pavement or where ever i stopped. I googled the issue and got ten thousand hits that the problem was the thermostat. I took it to K-tech three times for this issue before i googled. I got alot of guesses as to the problem. I HAD to take it in finally because it no longer would even accept the coolant . I told them i had looked it up and that it was probably the thermostat. The "tech" opened up my car and they phoned me that they were replacing the water pump and the timing belt... they put it back together still a problem.. I got a chance to look at the two items they replaced they were still very new looking. I asked to make sure i got those parts at the end. I repeated that when i looked it up it was the thermostat that was the issue. So they took it back apart and finally replaced the thermostat. They put it back together.. It still had the issue. Then the "tech told me it must be the brand new radiator. So they replaced that. Still had the issue. Then the "tech" said it must be a pin hole in my head gasket. Two weeks later it was replaced and put back together. The issue persisted. the Tech was exasperated as I was so i got a new "tech". He pulled the thermostat and put the car back together with out it. Issue gone. The thermostat they replaced it with was faulty or they accidentally replaced it with the old one, I don't know. To replace a thermostat should cost about 400 bucks with K it most likely will cost a thousand. but to replace mine cost me 4800 dollars. She knocked off 800 bucks . Later when driving on 880 going 65 miles an hour the air foil they had put back on incorrectly came off. I ran it over which damaged the rear one. I had them replaced. Which cost 5800 dollars. I called them about the issue and they said if i "bring the part in they will put them back on correctly " I told them the parts are in a million pieces all over 880 they hung up on me. Im still trying to recover financially from this. i did not get the water pump or timing belt back from them even after asking for them. I took the radiator to the shop and had it checked out it is still in good working order. They also broke the hood latch cable and the nuematic hood stand. read more

I went in for a small repair, only to get an estimate for a $1600! I paid $105 for the diagnostic. I went to another mechanic who made the repair for $50...(and it still works). The K-Tech mechanics reported that all these parts that actually work were broken! So was this a deliberately fraudulent or merely incorrect diagnosis? Even though the diagnosis was completely useless to me, I could not get a refund. I did get a check for $35....but not the balance, no matter how I tried. I looked back over all my invoices and noticed a pattern of "over-diagnosis". I started wondering how much $ I spent on unnecessary repairs.I also spoke to employees who were very unhappy about how they were treated by the owner. I am not a disgruntled employee. I was a regular customer and this is the TRUTH.! Report all such incidents to the Ca Bureau of Automotive Repair. Support only ethical businesses. read more

Charges for simple computer work to verify check engine light conditions and totally unrealistic pricing to download/reboot fix ( which subsequently failed) was a rip-off. They have a nice pitch as to how complex the process is. Unfortunately 4 yrs formal training in computer science/engineering causes a big red flag when techs babble nonsense. read more

Ktech... I've spent close to three thousand there. And realize now I may have made a big mistake in trusting this business. I've been patient and have made payments with no complaints. I did notice the poor communication in some cases. This may be due to the way they make you discuss your vehicles issues with an intake person and not with the actual mechanic. It seems the intake person passes (hopefully) your info onto the mechanic and Kate then "helps" to problem solve. Sounds okay......but really it leaves many opportunities for mistakes in communication. During one cycle I had to repeat myself many times before they actually looked at the initial problem I came in with. And finally they found the problem I thought the vehicle had. Beside the communication issues-its a very expensive shop and every time I'd pick up my vehicle, something new always came up the next day. I still wonder if All the work I payed for ever got done ....... Taking my business elsewhere and counting my losses. These goons had my truck for 6 months almost a dozen different times and each time I got it back supposedly fixed it would literally die rolling off of the lot. They assured me every time they found the problem and that it was fixed to the tune of $1200 each time taking a random shot at diagnosing the problem, none of which actually fixed it. Finally I pulled it after giving them what I felt was more than enough time to fix it. The guy I brought it to fixed it in a weekend for 300 bucks and now k tech refuses to pay me back for the work they failed to do. Crooks isn't even close to what these chums are. Beware. read more

Previous review (5 stars): Kate is knowledgeable, attentive, generous with her time, and very skilled. She solved a problem my previous mechanic could not. I have brought her several vehicles and she has done a great job with all of them. She has also been more than willing to give tips and car advice; it's clear she cares about her customers. I highly recommend her. Update (3/13): I have lately become quite disappointed with K-Tech. While I have not received technically poor service there, I am put off by several experiences which have felt that this company is first and foremost interested in getting every dollar they can at the expense of their customer. I was recently quoted $150 to change 2 air filters, which require no more than unclipping a box and changing the filters (I know, I've done it on this car before). I know garages charge for this kind of thing, but the kicker is the dealership wants $50 LESS for the same job. Plus even the dealership's oil change and brake quote was cheaper. In the past, bids at K-tech were competitive with, but no better than, dealerships' prices. Now it seems you SAVE money at the dealership (33% in this case), which is pretty unheard of. In addition, I have had past experiences recently of having diagnostic work done at a cost of $150+, after which they put the car together again before notifying me and asking if I wanted the work done, then charging me the additional labor to take the car apart again to do the work. One of the things I most appreciate in a service shop is honesty and integrity and the willingness to be as efficient and cost-effective as possible, but my experience here has become otherwise, sadly. I brought in my Honda Civic for some suspension/brake issues. Initially, they replaced my rear tires (they found me a great deal on tires that same day), replaced a front bearing, and replaced my battery. I had to bring it back because we found out I also needed my front rotors replaced. They waived the full price of the rotor replacement (parts and labor) because I had to go back. Took our granddaughters car to K-Tech because it was leaking coolant. $1,786.46 later it still leaked. Took it back to them 2 more times and they said they couldn't find any leaks. We took it to Raul's in Santa Rosa where they found that the water pump K-Tech installed was missing 2 bolts. So another new water pump and and thermostats. More money but now the problem is solved. read more
