I strongly advise against doing business with Pauline's Automotive when it comes to buying any of their lien vehicles. From the very beginning, our experience was incredibly frustrating. My 18-year-old son had spent the last 18 months saving to buy his first car. He connected with a technician named Fernando, who was unprofessional, difficult to communicate with, and changed the price of the lien sale vehicle twice during the process. He also tried to rush him into a purchase and tried to create a false sense of urgency that was unneeded. Very negative used-car salesman signals. Despite these red flags, my son was determined to purchase the 1999 Jeep Cherokee, so we proceeded with an independent inspection at a reputable shop in Santa Rosa. Fernando agreed to meet us at Coogler's Automotive on Piner Road in Santa Rosa for a third-party evaluation. The results were alarming. The vehicle had multiple SERIOUS issues that he was not honest about: - A loud growling noise from the rear, likely due to a failing bearing - Metal particles in the rear differential fluid - A fan clutch with missing bolts - Combustion gases present in the cooling system, indicating a probable head gasket issue or worse (failing motor) - A disconnected sway bar just hanging from the suspension system - And tons of other issues I don't feel like listing out When these issues were presented, Fernando immediately accused the shop of lying. What in the world??? Coogler's promptly displayed photo evidence right then and there and diagnostic reports, five in total, proving the presence of combustion gases in the engine. They even demonstrated that the repeated tests showed increasing levels of contamination as the engine ran longer. Undeniable evidence. And yet, Fernando still says "liars." Fernando insisted he was a skilled mechanic, but the facts clearly said otherwise. This kind of behavior, denying clear evidence, attempting to mislead a young buyer, and then RETALIATING against a reputable shop with a 1-star online review, speaks volumes about his and Pauline Automotive's integrity and professionalism. In my opinion, this company and it's ownership, which was notified about the issue and chose to do nothing about it, is not trustworthy. If this is how they attempt to misrepresent vehicles for sale, I can only imagine how they conduct themselves when it comes to repairs. Proceed with extreme caution. read more

So I went to get my truck smogged at a different but I needed a sticker for my aftermarket part for a smog. They said hey go get it and come back doesn't make sense to charge you. Then I came to Pauline's after solving that issue. Turns out there's a second part that needs a sticker. Pauline's charged me $60 knowing that they couldn't really test it. The other shop had the courtesy of looking out for me about wasting money. Pauline's could not have the same integrity. I can't support a business like that. read more

went in for a simple oil change after an hour and a half they came back and said they couldn't get the oil filter cap off and had broken a part of it trying. At that point I've asked for my car back and said I would take it to Benedetti's who had put the oil filter cap on previously. The woman who have been working on the car handed me my keys without making eye contact or saying sorry we can't do the job. They also pushed me to get a more expensive grade of oil been using. I took the car back to Benedetti's,they got the oil filter cap off in two seconds flat, gave me a new oil filter, reset all the maintenance markers and comped the whole thing Since I have been a customer with them. I had bought to switch over from many years at Benedetti's to Pauline's in order to support local, now that Benedetti's has been sold to a big brand chain, but I'm sticking with them after this! read more

For ten years, I trusted my car repairs to Pauline's Automotive in Sebastopol. Now I find that my trust has been routinely abused by overcharging, performing unnecessary (and costly) procedures and finally, fraudulently falsifying my authorization to have work done. I am a partly disabled senior, 24/7/365 caregiver for a terminally ill mom (who has since passed). I blindly trusted that Pauline's Automotive would take care of my car, so I could take care of my family. I never quibbled or questioned anything until recently. On 3/21/23, I took my 2008 Prius in for an oil change and inspection and came out several days later with a $2984 repair bill that I did not authorize. I was stunned when I went to pick up my car. I said to the service manager, Tiffany, "Don't you recall that I authorized only up to $400 when you called to inform me of the recommended services?" Tiffany replied, "We have our calls recorded." So I said, "I will pay the full amount now. Then you can refund me once you listen to the tapes and verify that I verbally authorized only up to $400." Four days later, Tiffany called to say she listened to the recording and there was nothing about my $400 authorization. I demanded to listen to the tapes myself and later that day went to Pauline's office to listen to the recording of the phone call made on March 21 at 12:50 PM lasting nine minutes and 25 seconds. I have a near photographic memory for conversations. Large swaths of our conversation were missing from the recording. There were two approximately two-minute blank sections, ostensibly when I was put on hold, one of those holds right after Tiffany mumbled out the $3K price tag. At no point, anywhere on the tape did we hear myself explicitly authorize the $3K amount. Next thing on the tape, we are working out the details for a loaner car, with the implication (later given by Kat, the supervisory manager for Pauline's and K-Tech) that since I asked for a loaner car that I must have agreed to the charges. I left the Pauline's office feeling somehow scammed. Because of my job as a web and multimedia engineer, I know how absolutely trivial it is to alter a digital audio recording. But, without access to the original digital files, there is no way I can prove it. One week later, I found a discussion on Nextdoor.com (https://nextdoor.com/p/JsfqL2pQbKQm) with over 150 posts reporting dishonest business practices by K-Tech (and Pauline's, both repair shops with the same owner, Kate Jonasse). I realized that my experience was not an isolated incident but part of a pattern. So, I went back and checked my invoices. Now, I have proof of unnecessary repairs. On March 23, 2023 invoice 330321002 (mileage 131,479) there are FOUR such unnecessary repairs: #1 Replace 4 spark plugs ($335) "due for replacement based on mileage" but... On 11/27/20, invoice 301124002, mileage 126,,405 (5,074 miles earlier) they had already replaced the spark plugs ($148 that time) #2 Transmission service ($223.99) However, On 11/27/20, invoice 301124002, mileage 126405 (5,074 miles earlier) already performed transmission service ($189.83 that time) #3 Replace thermostat ($657.55) Except... On 7/17/19, invoice 290717001, mileage 121,897 (9,582 miles earlier) already replaced thermostat (as part of water pump replacement, $898.69) Now, I suspect the water pump replacement might not have been necessary. #4 Engine cooling system service ($288.45) because "too much antifreeze," However... On 7/17/19, invoice 290717001, mileage 121,897 (9,582 miles earlier) they were the ones who refilled the cooling system after replacing the water pump... and I have not touched it since. FOUR unnecessary repairs, totaling over $1,500 on just one invoice! Either this is utter incompetence or criminal fraudulence. I believe it is fraud. In the Nextdoor.com online forum, an ex-employee makes these statements about owner, Kate Jonasse: "doesn't even care that a tech is changing out parts that don't need to be replaced. She's been told about it for years and doesn't care because it makes her money." "The owner has been changing paperwork before giving it to the BAR and bragging about it to the employees" An owner who would alter documents going to a state agency, BAR - California Bureau of Automotive Repair, would not be above altering a voice recording of a customer's verbal approval. DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU WANT GOOD SERVICE, OR IF YOU WANT A RESOLUTION. I had an issue start June 2024 that is still not resolved. From the start, their communication was poor and minimal. They gave me a run around about technician's calling out, being on vacation or no longer working there and then had a "senior technician" "redo the diagnostic" and proceeded to tell me I need a new engine on a car I only had for a few months, with only 20k miles on it when I got it (I got two second opinions after this). I've paid 2 diagnostics in total, and all they replaced was basic maintenance parts that have already been replaced by the shops that I got second opinions from- since I didn't trust this place from the start. They tried charging me for a 3rd diagnostic AFTER SAYING THEY CANT FIGURE OUT THE ISSUE (my car has fired the same exact codes since I came here over a year ago) I had to go to Pauline's per my warranty under car max as they're a "Car Max Approved Service Provider". Pauline's "can't figure out the issue". On our final visit last month, they told me verbally they replaced a certain hose after communicating with Volvo- but it's not on an invoice, no record of it. But they can put a $0 "detailing" or "cleaning" line item on a car they returned filthy. When I've asked why, they said they didn't want to "doctor an invoice" and I was told that tech is no longer there. Sound familiar? I, the consumer, had to tell the manager to call Volvo and investigate because if they communicated with Volvo there would proof and that wouldn't be "doctoring" that would be DOCUMENTING!! I should not have to tell someone how to do their job, or how corresponding with manufacturers works.. On my last visit (A Monday) as mentioned, I specifically requested technician Isiah, they told me he would be in on Wednesday and its no problem to have him work on my car again. But on Tuesday they gave my my car back with no resolve..no mention of my requested technician, no one told me he no longer worked their until I called and asked about my invoices.... their service is just horrible; and nobody has a clue what they're doing, they don't seem forthcoming. Their courtesy cars are filthy, and I had to put air in the tires even when I made appointments ahead of time and they new Id be using their car. After being told they can't figure out this issue and deciding I'm done dealing with this place and ultimately giving up, I asked them to leave my keys in the drop box so I can get my car back we were told they are hesitant because "the state of affairs going on in our country". I gave them multiple chances and plenty of time before posting a review because maybe they had poor management last time, as they said they're under new management/employees now..but it's the same excuses as last year for the poor service I have received. Brought my car in for a 3 day job. Didn't even start it till what I was expecting to be the pick up date. Took 2 weeks to do a 3 day job, at which point they broke my intake manifold and took and extra week to get the part in. Taken it back in four times because my brakes are make way more sound then they ever should. Had me waiting two hours sitting in the office with an appointment to explain the problem only to have the technician take it back without talking to me and Still haven't fixed it. We came to Pauline's wanting to support local and women owned... with that being said, we came for a simple oil change. We had no other indicator lights on, just an oil change on our 2013 Prius. We get the car back with the tire pressure warning light on. The receipt indicates they did a tire pressure check. Ok no big deal, we take it back to Pauline's because they recommend a tune up, spark plugs, fuel system service, tire rotation and CVT fluid exchange. When we drop the car off, we mention the tire pressure warning indicator light is on from the previous oil change at Pauline's, which mind you was the week before. They call us an hour later with a $1356 quote?! Wow! Ok well we need it so we agree. We pick the car up the next day... the car is running great, but the tire pressure indicator light was still on, we figure after the amount of cash we just dropped they could have reset that indicator. We call and have to schedule another visit for the following Tuesday. Ok now we didn't notice right away untill we hear something dragging on the ground...It's the shield plate dragging on the ground. Ok I get it, those wear out over time, BUT it wasn't dragging before Pauline's. We had drove to Fort Bragg for that weekend, and all the auto repair places are closed. So what do we do? Pull it off because it's making a horrible sound. I call Pauline's that following Monday, Kat the manager says we take photos of before and after, let me check and talk to the tech who worked on it. She calls back and says the tech said it was already broken, and that he zip tied it up. Well he should not have done that, he should have called us and gave US the opportunity to get it replaced or fix it ourselves. So now I tell Kat this and she offers to order a new part and have her tech replace it, no labor charges just the cost of the part... I look up the part up $62.00 online, she calls back and says $320 for the part!?! I say I want to see the pictures that she said they take... "oh we didn't take a pic of the skid plate, and we are not a tire shop so we can't fix the tire pressure indicator light'l but they can rotate the tires!? Just goes to show folks... read the reviews! They had my car for 36 Days and at the end when I decided to pick up my car after so long, the car was still having the same problem, as many other people my car was misdiagnosed, I tried to talk to somebody at the shop to help me but what I got instead was "PAY THE BILL $ 1,578 AND TAKE YOUR CAR OR WE WILL START CHARGING FOR STORAGE AND PUT A LIEN ON YOUR CAR" They installed a pump and new wiring that did not fix the problem. We went to court and Pauline's stated that I was not a mechanic that's why I dint know that those parts were was a part of the cooling system, but the dealership fix the car for $1,150 in 3 days and none of the parts that they changed needed to be changed. I called and Lisa gave me an estimate for an EGR Cooler replacement over the phone for $675. I press her to give me a written quote and it takes her over 24 hrs to do it after she said she would get it done in 20m. She said her boss made her go over to cover the desk at K-Tech, owned by same company. Finally get the quote and it's $1816. Totally bait and switch, grateful, I didn't tow my car here. Staff if very nice but very overpriced. I got my power steering pump replaced not that long ago I've taken my car in 2-3 times. They replaced a seal on it and it's still leaking. I've called again and they don't ever call me back or they say "I'll have my manager call you back" and they never do. Seems unprofessional to me which sucks because I really liked the people there. I don't know anything about cars. I was looking for help diagnosing how much repairs to my vehicle would be and they were on it. I had gone to three other places before I stopped at Pauline's and no one had offered a diagnostic report. The people in the office were super friendly and helpful and after a few hours they called me to come get my vehicle. Turns out the cars engine didn't have a vin # and they could only do a visual inspection. When I went to get the car they told me things wrong with it that they noticed with the visual inspection and they didn't charge me because they couldn't do a full diagnostic work up. Took my 4 cyclinder Tacoma here a couple of years ago because it was running rough. After multiple appts to try and repair my misfiring cylinder and over $2000 spent here, the truck was still running really rough and the check engine light came back on just a few days after I got it back from them for the last time. I ended up dumping the truck at a buddy's ranch who has much more car knowledge than me. He finally got around to looking at it, turns out that the fuel injector wasn't plugged all the way in on that misfiring cyclinder and the harmonic balancer needed to be replaced. We are talking about a $60 part and a couple hours of work. Once we did that, the truck ran smooth and fine again. I would never take any of my vehicles here again, it's clear to me after several visits to both here and K-tech over the years that the mechanics and technicians here are not competent at their jobs and they will always try to upsell you on stuff you don't need. Take your money elsewhere, there are way more honest mechanics out there. read more

There are a lot of positive reviews for this auto shop but I personally had a very negative experience. In November 2020, I brought my Toyota Highlander in for a routine timing belt replacement because it was due for the replacement (nothing running rough at the time, it was just at the correct mileage mark to get a new timing belt). As I was driving home from picking up my vehicle, the check engine light came on, so I turned around and drove back to the shop. They said it was likely a coincidence and turned off the code, sending me on my way. Again, the check engine code came back on as I was driving home, so they agreed to take a closer look. They ended up admitting that there was either an issue with the timing belt itself or with their installation, and said they would have to re-do the job. I was thankful that they were willing to correct the issue, however, what was a two-day job turned into them keeping my car for two weeks. The manager jokingly said that they should give me a discount for the trouble and time, but never actually followed through on that offer. If that was the end of the story, I probably would have given a three-star review. Unfortunately, however, after about a month of driving the vehicle, I started to hear a rattle coming from behind the timing plate. This time, I wanted a second opinion, so I took it to a different shop - who, unfortunately, misdiagnosed the rattle and supposedly "fixed" it by tightening the timing plate. It continuously got worse and worse, with the car also running rough. Due to COVID, I have hardly driven my vehicle over the past year and a half (~7,000 miles since the timing belt replacement in Nov 2020), and it only got really bad over the past month or two, so I finally took it into yet another shop. They diagnosed the issue easily, saying that the crank gears weren't inspected (which apparently is typical when doing a timing belt replacement) and have worn the new timing belt. Now, I have to have the entire job re-done only 7,000 miles later - which could have easily been avoided had Pauline's simply done their job correctly and inspected the crank gears when replacing the timing belt in the first place. I'm not a car expert so I did not know to ask for this. The worst part, in my opinion, is that the work from Pauline's is still under warranty (based on the paperwork that they provided me when they replaced the timing belt), but Pauline's refused to pay for even a percentage of the work and/or parts. I am very disappointed with my experience and hope that they will get more thorough and experienced technicians who do the job right the first time. They had the lowest price in Sebastopol for a timing belt replacement, but I ended up paying dearly for it. I do not recommend using this mechanic. read more

They charge me over $700 for a transmission service double of what Ford would charge. Ford would have service the transmission for $365 and AAMCO would do the same work for 300. Pauline's is a very female-friendly shop, I like dealing with Monica and she's always very cool and helpful. I had a recurring problem with my car's engine smoking slightly, and Pauline's team was very helpful in diagnosing and repairing the problem, and replacing the valve covers on an older Subaru. Today I went back because the engine was slightly smoking again, but it's just a little oil leak. Monica checked the air filters, topped off the coolant and oil at no charge. One of the worst places to be is on a road trip away from your "home" mechanic. My son and I were passing through Sebastopol when my Van had an issue. I found Pauline's by doing a diesel mechanic search and when I called and told them my situation, Kat (desk manager) told me to come in and have one of the techs check it out. I showed up with my son and fluid coming out of my engine compartment and right away I felt the hospitality of this place. Geo, one of the mechanics had a wonderful, peaceful presence to him that brought my "freak out" down to a "everything is going to be alright" state of mind. After chatting with him he told me to come back to next morning and they could diagnose my van. The next day they took it in and went the extra mile to get the problem fixed and even checked in with me to make sure my 4 year old son was comfortable while we waited. Kat, helped us sort out some issues with the broken part being paid for by an issue from a previous mechanic and even helped me find another part for another problem I was trying to solve. I was there pretty much the whole afternoon but it didn't really matter because I felt like was part of the family. My son felt the same. Great place to get your auto serviced and if you are in a pinch. I felt very blessed to have found the team at Pauline's. They are trustworthy, diligent and professional. read more

A couple months go by, the clutch starts to go wonky..I take it back in they tell me the air wasn't bleed out of the clutch....ok please fix the job I paid for. We were on vacation in Bodega Bay when the oil pump in our Honda unceremoniously died. We were far from home, staying in a town with no auto service. Ugh. We made a few calls and ended up having AAA tow the car to Pauline's, crossed our fingers and hoped for the best. Pauline's totally knocked our socks off. It turned out there was a lot of work to do. They were 100% honest about what we needed, they got it done in a day, did quality work, and were incredibly helpful and downright friendly from start to finish. In an unexpected wrinkle, it turned out there were no Ubers in Bodega Bay (none!), and we had no way to go pick up our car when the work was done. We explained our predicament, and Jenn, one of the owners, actually drove the half hour to our hotel to pick us up. You don't get service like that just anywhere. If we lived near Sebastopol, Pauline's would be our new first choice for auto repair. Since we don't, we have to settle for giving them our unqualified positive review here. read more

Mechanic doesn't know what he is doing and prices are the mosts expensive around. I took my car into Pauline's about six months ago. They told me my valve gasket head was leaking. Pauline's own prices were so expensive we took it to McLeas to get fixed. About two weeks ago I took my car into Sonoma County Auto Car to get window wipers. there, they tell me I have an external leak in my head gasket and on my car is going to die very soon. He said that these types of leaks develop over long periods of time and this leak probably existed when Pauline's had initially examined the car. This mechanic tells me that a blind person could see the leak. I called Pauline's and told them this story and Monica tells me to bring in the car. I bring in the car and they do a hydrocarbon test to see if there is a leak in the head gasket. Even though I explicitly told them to look for an external leak in the head gasket, they told me there was no leak in the head gasket and that the only issue with the car was a valve gasket leak. Relieved, I take the car back to Mc Leas where we originally had the valve gasket leak repaired because it was under warranty. However, they confirmed Sonoma County auto repair's assessment, my car has an external head gasket leak and is basically worthless. If I had known that the car had an external head gasket leak when I originally took it into Pauline's months ago, I would not have put as much money on the car as I did. In a nut shell, Paulines failed to diagnose an external head gasket leak at least one time, and probably twice. I am just blown away that after telling them to explicitly look for a leak in the head gasket, they completely missed it. They told me it was totally safe to drive my car. Of course it is not safe to drive with this type of leak. I would not recommend anyone going to Paulines, it seems like their mechanic doesn't really know what he's doing, and they have the most expensive prices I've seen in Sonoma County. read more

I needed fluids done on my drivetrain, and they wanted to charge me an ABSURD amount. I was told how long it would take by the mechanic and what their shop rate was, so I did the math and they wanted to charge me almost $700 in FLUIDS. After calling and telling them I don't accept the quote, and a little back and forth they decided to drop the price $400-$500. So if I was none the wiser, they would have robbed me? I did have them do the work because my vehicle was already there and it was convenient. Now after this, I've probably received 3 phone calls trying to sell me more service, but yesterday was the last straw. I already have been receiving junk mail from them but now they are sending me fake IRS checks with my name on it saying how it could be mine and how I should bring my vehicle in. This place is a joke. Only person there who seems to know anything is the mechanic and he even seems to be kept in the dark for the ridiculous practices at the front desk. read more

Omg. So I was having a huge problem with my car overheating. I tried 15 locations in the sebastopol and Santa rosa area. 5 didn't answer, and 9 said they couldn't even look at my car for between 4 and 7 days. Pauline's however, said "bring it in" and promised to look at it the next day. Long story short, I had it towed in. Monica immediately called to tell me my car arrived. THEN about 1 hour later, called back to confirm the problem . AND promised to have it fixed be the end of the next day. Guess what? At 10am the next morning, she called again to say it would be fixed before 3pm. And then called again at1pm to tell me IT WAS DONE!!!! I picked up the car and drove back to Los Angeles with my car running better than ever!!! Great shop. Great people and a fair price. I recommend Pauline's 100%. read more

I wanted to support this shop bc it is woman owned. I called to get an estimate for a brake job and some other repairs. However in order to get an estimate I had to bring my car in for a diagnostic check first which would have costed money. I didn't want to spend that extra money which was about half if a standard brake job so I went to another local shop who did not charge extras and provided the service I needed. read more

About a week before Halloween I had quite a scare when the ball joint broke on my truck. Luckily I was driving slowly (to avoid hitting any nocturnal creatures). Myself and the truck body were undamaged but the wheel had come off and the passenger side axle was down on the pavement. I had the truck towed to Pauline's for repair. Monica and her team got right to work ascertaining the damage underneath, getting me an estimate, and completing the repairs all within a few days. The cost was very reasonable but to top it off she offered a loaner car which saved me additional $ and time arranging for a rental. AND THEN when I went to pick up my repaired vehicle I could hardly recognize it for the shiny coat! Having been washed, waxed, and even the tires blacked, my truck is now officially spoiled (even I have never blacked the tires). I highly recommend Pauline's.
