Originally heard about the repair shop from a good friend who was going there and still is. Then was again referred via our roadside service because of their certification. So decided to check them out. Took our car initially and it was very affordable compared to a few shops i had gone to in the past. They always checked with me on anything needed before doing any work for my approval which was great. The customer service was excellent. Loved that the owner comes out and explains things and just kind of checks in. Its a great personal touch and I feel a great testament to the love of the job and the customers. Something unique that I have not used but followed my buddy and gave him a ride is the overnight drop off. You can check with them during the day and let them know wed hats going on and if you cant get by during business hours you can fill out an envelope and stick your keys in it and drop them in a drop off. Very convenient for those of us who work long hours during the day. Truely the best auto repair shop I have been to and my buddy feels the same. We even took my sister in law there for van auto issues and she loves the friendliness and service too. Great to have some passionte and trustworthy auto mechanics in town. read more

I have been using ARU for years. Communication is important and ARU is great about it. Estimates up front are usually the bill when the work is done. I left a previous mechanic because it was just the opposite, always more than I expected. Dave is great about getting you in asap, often the next day. Never, not once have I had to return to have something re-repaired. That should be a given but not true of all shops. All in all, Dave is a great guy, easy to work with, fair, honest and affordable. read more

This is currently the only place in Rohnert Park/Cotati that is a STAR test center. Although the smog guy (Dave) was friendly and took care of my smog with no problems, I could not in good conscience recommend this place to anyone, based mostly on customer service of the lady working the front desk. Brought my car for smog a few weeks ago and really just couldn't believe some of the things she said. Most people don't know the details of getting their car smogged, so show some patience when you ask someone about something generally unfamiliar! Here is the gist of what I heard instead: "In what area did your car fail smog? Hydrocarbons? If you don't know, I can't help. I'm not going to diagnose your car in the phone." I tried to take advantage of the $10 off service or repairs check-in discount previously offered on yelp, but unfortunately the front desk wouldn't honor it. She told me she hates yelp, doesn't know how the promo check in even showed up on their yelp page, and when I pointed out the check in discount was for repair or service, she told me that a "smog" isn't the same as a "service." Ok, if that's not what it's considered or how you bill it, that's fine - I get it - but come on, when you've just told me what I owe for "services rendered," don't get pissy with me for asking about it. I see that the check in incentive has now been removed, so I guess someone figured it out. Before I left, she said that if she knew they were going to be the only STAR center in RP/Cotati, they would have charged more for smogs, because they were booked out far and not making very much on the smogs at the current price. I just felt like that was unprofessional and inappropriate to say in front of a customer, let alone directly to me. Go to a STAR station in Petaluma or Santa Rosa where it is easier to schedule, easier to find a place to park when you get there, has a more comfortable waiting room, and an overall more customer-friendly environment. read more

The husband-wife team here are absolutely amazing. If any place, ever, has deserved a 5 star review it would be them. I called to price an A/C recharge on my beloved truck, and not only did they offer a great price, but they found time for me immediately. As in "be here in an hour"- which was much appreciated since it was sweltering hot. They explained everything they did to my truck and why, and were super attentive to all my questions. I think I've found the "friendly neighborhood mechanic" that I thought was an urban legend. I will be bringing my truck back soon. read more

I have the same complaint as a couple of these reviews, THE LADY AT THE FRONT DESK. First I'll say something good. Dave was kind and soft spoken and was a nice guy and explained what he did and found on my vehicle. HE IS THE ONLY REASON I GAVE 2 stars. The 2 stars are for him only, as I can't say much about the work they do because I'll be taking my vehicle elsewhere. I initially walked in to explain my problem and set an appointment. I waited for a few minutes, the guy behind the desk(Dave) was on the phone, No problem. I did see another lady in the office but she seemed busy to, so I waited. She eventually came out and asked if I needed help. I said yes I'm having trouble with my vehicle and began explaining.(it was a list of troubles) she started acting high and mighty naming things she thinks is wrong. Ok whatever. But she continually had an attitude like she had something to prove. I reluctantly agreed to a diagnostic. She said they will look at everything and I told her I would write a list so nothing was forgotten. We set a date. Another good note, I had to cancel my first appointment due to an emergency. Dave kindly returned my call and we set the new appointment for the next day. I walk in after at the end of the work day. Again lady is in the back. She again asks from her office what I was doing there. She never made eye contact or got up. She kept shuffling her papers too busy to help the customer who's about to give them money. She eventually got up and looked for the chart. Dave was with another customer and she went out to get him to ask for my chart. Standing outside with a stance like she was annoyed that she had to wait for him. Dave then explained to me what he found. Went back inside so the lady could write everything up. They was she was speaking to him was very disrespectful, especially in front of the customer. And I BELIEVE she even made a smarta$$ remark to me about me having a list of troubles or adding problems after I drop it off. I almost said something but decided not to since I wasn't 100% sure. (But I explained to you the list of problems. You said diagnostics test. So deal with the list I gave you from our initial conversation). She was upset that the envelope said diagnostics test was 145 and not the 175(or 165) she tried to charge me I would have to wait for a quote since they are so busy. Attitude on attitude on chip on your shoulder on something you have to prove. Give your workers more respect in front of customers.(I sincerely feel bad for Dave). Give customers more customer service, more politeness. I understand your busy, but guess what, so am I and so is everyone else. read more

Took our truck in for repairs they ran a diagnoses and said our cost is $400+ to repair. we said Ok do the work. Work was done.We got no more than 5 minutes away and the check engine light came back on. We took it back, they ran a new diagnoses(No charge) but told us they missed additional repairs and the repairs would be an additional $400+. We took our truck elsewhere. My suggestion for this place is to get it right the first time. People are too busy to keep taking their cars and trucks in for repairs. The lady at the desk is not very friendly. I have had the misfortune of needing a mechanic for my 2 vehicles since November '09. Fortunately for me, they have done repairs to both vehicles. The first time, I was having problems w/ my daughter's Ford Taurus. The tow truck driver recommended them. I didn't have a regular mechanic & was going into the experience blind. Being a woman, I didn't want to get ripped off. After doing some research, I found that the repairs done was actually cheaper than a lot of places. Both times I've had work done, it was quick, reliable work. I'll be gettting any future repair done by them too. They're fair & honest. read more

Joanie and Dave service all of our vehicles and do our repair work as needed. They are very friendly, competitively priced, and go out of their way to make sure that we are getting everything we need. We've taken our company and family vehicles to a number of places prior to finding their shop, and this is the first time that we have found a place that we have decided to stick with. Yes, sometimes they have to call back and say that they have found something else wrong with the vehicle; however, that is par for the course when it comes to anything that is mechanized. I was surprised to see all of the negative reviews when I logged on to Yelp to write a review about Auto Repairs Unlimited but then I realized that most of the positive reviews have been filtered. Shame on Yelp! I haven't worked with them much but they recently fixed my AC for a very reasonable price and I had my work van back within hours. My boss has been taking his domestic cars here for years and always tells me how happy he is with them and how they are able to diagnose problems that others are unable to do. My short experience with them is A+. read more

Great place to take your car. They have been taking car of our daughter's car for 4 years while she attended SSU. We found this place on Yelp and since we are 400 miles away, I was nervous about sending her anywhere, but after talking to Joanie on the phone we decided to give them a try. We have been nothing but pleased with their service. Just today, our daughter couldn't get her car started. I told her to call AAA and if they could jump start it she was to drive it right over to Auto Repairs Unlimited. When she got there, they checked it right away. It was the battery and they replaced it and had her in and out of there within about 30 minutes. I would highly recommend them. read more

Joanie runs the front desk, other reviewers have said she is unfriendly - I think they are mistaking her passion, cause she has a lot of it! And she is extremely generous with her time - I have called their just to ask questions or for advice when I am doing my own repairs and she even takes the time to go ask the mechanics if it is something she is unfamiliar with. I don't usually write reviews. Took the time to get on yelp and write this review because the shop deserves 5 stars. I had ongoing problems with the emissions system in my car. I went to several (more than 6 repair shops) and they all charged outrageous diagnostic fees and unnecessary repairs. Auto Repairs Unlimited was the only one that took the time to look at the problem, didn't charge for unnecessary repairs, and fix the problem that other shops didn't even come close to diagnosing. The co-owner that also does the repairs himself is really reasonable with the quotes, repairs, and the time he took to repair my Honda. I since recommended the shop to co-workers who were also extremely satisfied with the services they offer. read more

The lady at the front desk is rude and not helpful. When I asked about a possible warranty issue with a carburetor they had worked on she was anything but helpful. When I respectful asked her to work with me to make a plan to even determine if the issue with the auto was related to their work she put me off. She told me that Dave is busy... too much work and taking classes. She said she would get back to me... one week out and still no call. Customer service and client satisfaction should be a priority. I took the car to my regular mechanic. He told me that the carburetor needs to be rebuilt. This is exactly what I paid Auto Repairs Unlimited to do just a few months ago. read more

These people are fake.They will lie to you to get your money. Dave is a very easy soft-spoken person but will lie to your face. I brought my car there to have them put a motor, tranny and radiator in. Instead they talked me into doing all kinds of other stuff tp my car. I kept telling him I want my car done and he kept promise me a certain date. Never happened. I finally had to have my car towed out of there and take it somewhere else. His wife is very rude and very controlling. I ended up spending over $12,000 and never had my motor tranny in radiator put in. He also damaged my custom intake manifold. I turned them into B A R . David from bar told me he was going to write them up for at least three things. The Next Step was to take them to court. I am warning the public to be careful with this company and to make sure everything is in writing and do not take their word for anything. Very sneaky people. read more

We took our car to the dealer to address a factory recall. While there they said we needed brakes as they were worn to 1 to 2 mm and suggested they could do the job then. Wanting a second estimate for the work we went to ARU as we've done business with them for years. At the appointed time for the work, ARU revealed we didn't need brakes and we should get a minimum of 10,000 more miles. Brake estimate from the dealer, +/- $800 depending on what they found. Cost from ARU for inspection--zero. When you deal with a dealer get a second opinion. I can recommend ARU for their honesty and quality of their work. As a bonus, they do smog checks at competitive rates. read more

Had a car with a broken fuel gauge towed in to them (turned out it was out of gas). They gave an estimate, but then they couldn't find the right parts, and needed to order a kit. The kit arrived, and they still couldn't get the parts to work, and had to order more parts. They said they got that to work, but somewhere in the testing, my ignition got blown out, and they couldn't find the parts. Now, normally, when a mechanic breaks something completely unrelated to what they were working on, in this case on a car that was driving before it ran out of gas, they are on the hook for fixing it. No such luck. And, after being told the car was fixed, I arrive to pick it up and am told that they couldn't get the gas gauge to work after putting it back together. So the net items repaired that were not broken before the $500+ repair bill -- 1 O-ring seal for the gas tank (and the gas that got dirty while working on it). And, to top it off, the often-rude wife (I don't know if he even WANTS this job) complained loudly about how much time they had into the vehicle -- I feel bad that they had so much time in the vehicle, but it took them just under 2 MONTHS of repeated calls with nothing other than, call back next week, we'll see if we can find the parts by then, in order to get the car fixed. read more

I have taken my car to Dave and Joni at Auto Repairs Unlimited and and totally satisfied! This last time I took it, Dave practically diagnosed the problem over the phone, after another shop couldn't figure the problem out. And he was right! He kept the car overnight and tested it cold just to make sure it was fixed! They are courteous and have a great gourmet coffee machine and pick you up and give you ride if you need it. I'm not sure why my previous review was filtered- Turns out there was an underlying problem that was making my headlight switch burn out- The problem reoccured a day later. When I called the shop to let them know, they had me come back right away, figured out the underlying problem and fixed it free of charge- On top of that, they also replaced the new headlight switch *just to be safe* at no cost. I can't rave about this place enough, I got really scared when the problem came back that I was being ripped off but they have gone way above and beyond to make it right. read more

I have been taking my vans here for many years. At first the service and repairs were well done and the price reasonable. Over the past few years, I noticed that their prices have been entirely too high. For some reason, in addition to repair, they seem to think it is okay to double the price of parts, as if they were a auto parts store. For example, they charge $80 for shocks which are available anywhere for $30 to $40. They tack on $300 for a transmission that is delivered to their shop. Then they lied to me about it. I have two broken vans in the driveway because I cannot take them here because they want $2500 for repairs. I will never take another car here. read more

I called after my check engine light turned on, luckily a co-worker/ friend told me this was a good place to go after spending 30 min on the phone with other places trying to tell me it would be 120- 160 dollars to run a diagnostic on my car. Auto Repairs unlimited told me that it would be free to run the codes and from there like $55 to diagnose it. i took my jeep in and they were friendly from the beginning in trying to help me figure out my car problems. I left it with them for more then a few hours and we figured it would be around 200 or more to fix, and honestly for what the problem was, that was cheap . When i came back i was upset, not because of them just because i am a college student and can't really afford to fix my broken down car. The lady at the computer was very friendly and reassuring and was able to put a smile on my face. the mechanic was also very nice and simply stated that my car was no longer acting up. he said he was driving it around for a long time and nothing, he said he searched for the problem by disconnecting this and trying that (it was a lot of gibberish to me but my dad seemed to understand) . they only charged me for the $55 dollar diagnostic (1/2 an hour) when i know he spent ALOT more time on my jeep then that. Just me watching him work on my jeep was definatly over 30 min. since them my jeep has been working fine. they said it could have been moisture from leaving my top down. however what would have been atleast $200 dollars somewhere else only cost me $55. So yeah Im going back, and if anyone ever has a car problem i will always recommend this place. read more
