Kababistan is a restaurant that is a work in progress imo. It looks closed from the outside due to the busted retail sign and if not for a small, printed sign right over the storefront, you'd be hard pressed to know it was there. Inside is not huge. They have several tables and then a raised "traditional style," sit on the floor with cushions area if that's your jam, it was my groups. The staff is very nice and friendly but service is terrible in terms of basics like having an appetizer delivered but no plates or napkins. No one asked about water, drinks etc till we brought it up, and the water is bottled only, a $in many Pakistani and Afghani places commit. The food is pretty good. It saves it from being a 3-star place in my book. Honestly the friendliness of our server despite the bad service helped a lot too. We started with mantu which was not bad, the chapli kabob was solid, the karhai was good, the kabuli pulao was nice and the beef tikka on skewers was the best of the bunch. It was really good and probably worth considering a revisit just for that. Frustratingly they were out of a lamb so couldn't order a few items. I'm rounding up a 3.5 to 4 here as they really need to work on the logistics of service given the prices imo. That said the food is good. read more

Had an mixed experience at Kababistan. We walked in and waited 5 minutes but no one was there to greet us and restaurant was otherwise empty. Had to walk into the kitchen to get someone to seat us. Already off to an interesting start... Then once seated, we ordered but they didn't have the Qabuli Palaw or any lamb kabobs which is pretty crazy since I'd imagine those are the most popular dishes. They did have bolani and mantu so we ordered that and the beef kabobs. The restaurant interior was nicely decorated but pretty dirty. Bathrooms were not clean at all. But we held out hoping the food would be good and that part didn't disappoint. The bolani had good flavor though would've been nice if more crispy. Mantu were delicious and the beef tikka Kabobs were juicy though the flatbread underneath was kinda dry and not as fragrant as I would've liked. Overall the food was really good but the restaurant experience wasn't good. I hope they can improve in these things because it's great to have Afghan options on this side of town. read more

Honestly, this was one of the best Afghan meals I've ever had! The food was absolutely delicious, rich flavors, perfectly cooked, and truly worth the trip. The karhai in particular was so full of flavor, I'd come back just for that. Yes, they were out of a couple of items and things like water, utensils, and serving spoons came out a little late, but the staff handled it with such kindness and genuine apologies that it was hard to be upset. The team seems new, but you can tell they're passionate about their work and care about the experience. They were polite, respectful, and eager to make sure we left satisfied. The restaurant itself is small, seating maybe 50, and gets packed quickly, which honestly just speaks to how good the food is. The Afghan music in the background adds a nice authentic touch to the cozy atmosphere. While the prices are a little high for the portion sizes, the flavor more than makes up for it. Despite the minor hiccups, the food and hospitality left such a good impression that I would definitely recommend giving this spot a try. read more

***SOFT OPENING*** Authentic homemade afghani food is finally available in suburbs of dallas! Everybring was sooo fresh and so flavorful like wow!! So glad we got to check them out. Since they are soft opening, they're still working through their menu items and service etc but overall everyone was so friendly with the frequent check in's and gathering feedback from us. Very hospitable folks felt like we were eating with family. For the food, the chutney is 10/10 soo fresh and spicy I loved it and asked for some to go too! The kabobs were super juicy and flavorful. The kabuli pualo is literally the best I've ever had... you know it's freshly made when it has the bones and beef fat still in it and the rice was just cooked to full perfection! Gosh I could eat that every day!! Yummm!! We enjoyed the bulani which is similar to a aloo paratha but different bread and the chutney just takes it to another level. Was a little hard to find, the restaurant is on the far right corner of the center and so glad we finally made it after weeks of waiting to come to Dallas (I live in Austin). Plain and simple, some of the best afghan food I've ever had at any restaurant. Food quality is not cheap and it's obvious they use very high quality meat, which is rare for an afghan restaurant. Bolani was our appetizer, perfect size and texture and not thick (I hate doughy bolani), flavorful, and had that crust. Was very good with the chutney they provided. Beef Tikka: Tender, juicy, flavorful, amazing. I ordered a second one because it was so good. Qabuli Palow was phenomenal, rice was flavorful, the lamb was tender fall off the bone, and overall a great dish. I'm always in search of a good Qabuli and it's so rare to find a place that gets it perfect. Chapli kabob was cooked well, very juicy inside and went well with the orange sauce they provided with it. Final dish was the goat Karahi. I would recommend calling in advance for this one if you are in a rush. What an amazing dish. Spiced perfectly, tender meat, very flavorful, and the Afghan bread they provided with it was authentic and out of this world. Restaurant was very clean! Service was top notch, very friendly team, accommodating and hospitable. Every person working there came and checked on us individually. I wish these guys much success and I can't wait to come back! Tried this Afghan spot after hearing a lot of hype, but it was just okay overall. The food wasn't bad, but a few things could've been better. We tried ordering several items, but about five things were unavailable. One dish we did order took around 30 minutes before they told us it was out, which was pretty disappointing. Service was fine, just not great. The bolani and mantu were both solid -- probably the highlights of the meal. The beef skewers were tender but the portions were tiny; they look big on the skewers, but each piece is about the size of a quarter. The chicken skewers were juicy but under-seasoned, and only those came with rice. The rice itself didn't really taste like traditional Afghan rice. The sauces were good, though, and helped bring out the flavors. Overall, not a bad experience, just not worth the price or hype. I'd rate it 3.5/5 but probably wouldn't go back. read more

I just hate these type of restaurants where you pay to eat garbage. It's an easy to find location with plenty of parking. The interior is small but solid with maybe 4-5 tables. Service was slightly slow but very friendly. We ordered the following dishes: Bolani, Mantu, Beef Tikka Kabob, Chicken Kabob and Chapli Kabob. We also had the green tea and yogurt drink. The food was excellent. The bolani was crispy and not oily. The mantu had so much meat. The beef tikka and chicken kabobs were solid. They came with the metal skewer on them but the came right off. The real star of the show was the chapli kabob. This might have been the best if not one of the best chapli kabobs I've had in DFW. It was perfectly tender and had the right amount of sweetness. The green sauce was also outstanding with all the dishes. The green tea and yogurt drink were okay but probably wouldn't order those again. Overall great addition to the halal afghan scene in DFW. This new restaurant replaced a former place called Texas King. I was going based off Google Maps and honestly wasn't expecting to dine in at all. We gave it a shot after we were treated with great hospitality despite coming in after closing time. The food was PHENOMENAL. Best Afghan food in Dallas, it's truly unexpected. We had the Chapli Kabab(I plan to add pictures the next time I dine in). There is nice traditional seating inside if you're up to sit down with a family of 4-5+. Overall I'd say this is a hidden gem. The price is a bit on the higher end, but if you're feeling like treating yourself this is the place to go. It's worth the experience and we certainly plan to revisit soon. read more

It's only been open about a month, but they've got a great menu developed and, even though the location and decor are sparse, it still has a great vibe and very friendly service. We got the Beef Kabobs, Uzbeki goat rice, Bolani, and a pistachio-banana pudding (that wasn't on the menu). They were out of the cream rolls (which is what we ordered), so we pivoted to that.
