My wife and I took my son for his birthday as this is one of his favorite places to eat. He's been there about 5-6 times and we've never been. We had a fantastic server named Nick who was very attentive and made sure we were doing well with drinks and our appetizers. We ordered our main meal and I had the seared ahi, we wife had a beef dish and my son ordered the cod. All in all very good..... we told Nick we were celebrating a birthday and he brought out an ice cream that said Happy Birthday on the plate in chocolate. This is my GOTO Japanese Restaurant for Sushi when I'm in the Tempe area. I always sit at the bar and the bartenders are always very friendly and helpful. They have one of my favorite beers on tap, Asahi Dry. They have late night happy hour from 8:30pm to close Sunday thru Thursday. My selection is usually the miso soup and a sunshine rool. I rarely leave reviews, but this experience was extremely disappointing. I came in with my baby and teenage son hoping for a nice meal together, and from the very beginning the service was poor. Our server immediately pushed one of the most expensive items on the menu without asking any questions about what we were looking for. When I asked simple questions about menu items, she seemed unfamiliar and told me to just read the menu myself. Things only got worse from there. My baby's food was brought out within minutes and placed on the table without any acknowledgment, utensils, or check-in--while the rest of our food took over 30 minutes. I had to get up and ask for utensils myself while trying to manage a toddler. Meanwhile, my son and I sat there watching her eat. When I asked about the udon soup I ordered, the server acted confused and pointed back to the menu instead of taking responsibility for not clarifying the order. Communication was rushed and dismissive the entire time. By the time our food finally arrived, my daughter was already done eating and no longer able to sit patiently, making it nearly impossible for me to enjoy my meal. On top of that, part of our order (a tempura roll) was cold and clearly not fresh. There was no follow-up, no check-in, and no effort to correct the experience. The server avoided our table entirely. Before leaving, I spoke with a manager and explained how poor the experience was, especially given that this was meant to be a special meal with my son before he leaves. However, no real resolution was offered at that time. I paid approximately $59 in cash and, given the level of service and overall experience, I am requesting a refund or store credit. I would appreciate being contacted to resolve this. Overall, this was one of the worst dining experiences I've had, and I hope this is taken seriously so it doesn't happen to other customers. read more

We usually come here for happy hour and it's absolutely amazing but I don't know what happened here. We were put first on the waiting list since we came in towards the end of happy hour on a Saturday and were seated after a 10min wait. My salmon nigiri tasted good but the chicken karaage wings were way under-seasoned and the Alaskan rolls straight up tasted like old fish. I regret not sending the food back but we were short on time. This was extremely disappointing as I was showing my boyfriend this restaurant and really wanted to impress him with my go-to spot. This was such an incredible let down. I really thought I could rely on you Kabuki. That Alaskan roll was disgusting. He was so excited he even ordered 2 for himself and all 3 we had ordered were all incredibly fishy and smelly. The only good thing was the krab salad. This was hands down the worst meal I've ever had. Literally everything including the water was awful. I should have looked at the pictures before ordering the sushi. I got the tempura roll and it was loaded with imitation crab and I had to convince myself to take a bite. I don't know if it was the eel sauce or the roll itself but I immediately spit it out. It was terrible. I tried the hibachi fried rice with shrimp and I was disgusted when I noticed they used tiny shrimp. I've never had fried rice with cocktail shrimp, they weren't even deveined. Ew ew ew. I needed to get the taste out of my mouth and tried my husbands chips, those were awful so I then had to dig my pistachios out of my purse to get that taste out of my mouth. We always love coming to Cabo tea for their happy hour. We just caught it at around 4:30 and happy hour ends at 5 PM. Our server was super nice and very helpful and explaining all the items for happy hour. We got some crunchy deep-fried tough along with some healthier tuna rolls. Everything was delicious. We ordered about four items off the happy hour menu, which was plenty to fill us up because we wanted to save some room for Desert. The ambience was great and some really nice music playing overhead. Came here for happy hour. The prices were pretty good. Like $10-12 for specialty rolls and $6-8 for the basic rolls. The calamari was pretty good, crispy. And I really liked my Sunkissed roll with salmon and avocado and my salmon hand roll. I started off with the miso soup and calamari. We all pretty much ordered just the sushi and the karaage chicken was pretty crispy. The only reason I put 3 stars was because our waiter even though she was really nice kept not picking up our dirty plates so the table was full and we were trying to find space for everything we were ordering. We kept handing her and other waiters the dirty plates, but it's kind of common sense to pick up the dirty plates after dropping off more food. We were wanting to try the love boat that my friend kept talking about, but I guess it's only specific locations that have it. She did tell us about the love table but she wasn't quite sure what was in it. Maybe she was new and wasn't familiar Ruth the menu yet. I really enjoyed the sushi here! Living in the desert, I tend to be cautious about the seafood I eat--I've had both good and bad experiences around the Valley. Kabuki truly exceeded my expectations. The crispy rice was fantastic, and the rainbow roll with spicy tuna was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. Portion sizes were generous and more than enough for the two of us. Tip: there are 2 different happy hour times for this location and it is definitely worth it! I came in for Late Night Happy hour and got a few sashimi: tuna, salmon, yellowtail, albacore. Price is 4.25-4.50 for 2 pieces for each type! The sashimi was fresh. I also got the spicy garlic edamame ( regular price) but this one was a little disappointing. I've always love this dish but this time they gave me the samba chili sauce on the side , to dip the edamame. I prefer them sauté the sauce in like how they usually do it before. I also got spicy tuna hand roll, which was very good as well! 1 order came in as 2 rolls, which was more filling than I thought. This was not only some of the worst sushi over ever had, the service was horrible. The fish was dry and I had to drown it in soy sauce to eat it. I was at the bar with one other person that had already paid their tab. My drink sat empty and not once was I asked if I needed anything even after looking over my way. My family goes here every year on Christmas Eve and they never disappoint. I really enjoy their cocktails and appetizers, staff is always super nice. Stopped by for dinner on a Tuesday around 6pm. Host and server were friendly. Started with the mixed tempura aka shrimp and veggie ($11) - was fine with an assortment of 2 shrimps, asparagus, broccoli, zucchini, etc, maybe a total of under 10 pieces. This arrived pretty quickly, with a separate runner who delivered the food. Hamachi Sake Roll ($17) was surprisingly good, coming with 8 pieces with hamachi on top and salmon in the middle. Rose Roll ($15) wasn't great - there were only 6 pieces, carefully spread out so it covered the entire plate. The rice itself was not individual grains, rather clumped together as if it was extruded. Definitely pass this roll. Also split the BBQ Short Beef Ribs ($16.50) with our entrees - not bad, some chewy bits. It feels very overpriced for the quantity and quality of food you get. This place has the best salmon skin handroll in at least a 20 mile radius, and I order it at every sushi restaurant. You have to order it "oldstyle" to get it in a cone instead of two smaller taco shaped rolls, and it's huge and comes with a big side of ponzu sauce. I like to sub the ponzu for spicy ponzu and my girlfriend likes to add cream cheese, if that's your thing. A must order everytime you go here, 10/10! read more

We had gone on a Saturday around 5:30pm and the restaurant was very busy, per usual on a weekend. My party was a group of 6 people. We had waited for a table for 20 minutes then were seated quickly. Immediately, a waiter came to get us drinks and get our order started. Once we had ordered, we waited about 35 minutes for our food but in the meantime, our waiter brought our drinks and ginger/wasabi plates. Minus 1 star due to everyone's plates coming out at different times. One person in our party did not get any sushi therefore his plate came out 20 minutes earlier than everyone else's. Even those who ordered sushi did not get their plates at the same time, all orders were given sporadically and it left some people out while others could eat. All sushi was phenomenal. Absolutely delicious. The fish, itself, was fresh and clean. I was pleased with how delicious all the rolls were. The pork belly hibachi fried rice was good- but if you are hungry and only order this dish, it will not fill you up. This restaurant is good for small groups of 2-3 people as most tables seat up to 4, but there are booths for bigger parties. Small groups will do better with service like when your plates come out at the same time for eating. Overall, all dishes were delicious and I would definitely go back with a smaller group of people. read more

My family took me here on a Sunday afternoon for a celebration. This Kabuki restaurant is located at Tempe Marketplace and has been there for over twenty years. The place next door was packed, so we decided to check this place out because it was a shorter wait. Kabuki Japanese Restaurant has a number of restaurants on the West Coast with a couple of them being here in the Valley. They are part of the Kaizen Dining Group. We ordered some small plates to start off with for happy hour. The Fried Gyoza Dumplings, Wings and Edamame were all pretty good and reasonably priced. I am the only one in my family that eats sushi, so I ordered a couple of specialty rolls for myself. The Lotus on Fire Roll and Tiger Roll were both colorful and delicious and just the right amount of spice for me. Service was ok but not great. Overall we had a nice time and enjoyed our afternoon here. read more

Quality of the fish is really really REALLY poor. Presentation is better than the food

My friends came here to this location back in May and we had a great experience. The food we order was delicious and the server was very friendly. The only downside was that the service could have been a bit more attentive. I highly recommend going during happy hour where you can get the same sushi dish for a fraction of the price. The place was clean and nice atmosphere for talking. Very open space, I recommend sitting inside for the red and black setting the restaurant has. Will be retuning here for sure :) read more

It also comes with a house salad & miso soup. No complaints on the food, it was good. The California roll was solid, the beef was tender, and the fried rice was flavorful. Meet a friend here for lunch today, she never been, I have in the past. We were seated quickly, all the menus were explained (5 of them) waiter took our drink orders. We both ordered the Combo lunch we both ordered the spicy beef ramen, I got the Calif roll and she got the fried dumplings. The ramen was SPICY but good, the flavor was excellent, the depth of flavor was good. The California roll was a perfect match for the spicy level. What really took it home for me was the drink!! The lychee martini was TO DIE FOR! I will single-handedly go to Kabuki just to get this drink!! I understand and respect a restaurant's no outside food or drink policy. That wasn't the issue. The issue was how the manager handled the situation. My mother came in with a covered cup of coffee, unaware of the policy. She is diabetic, and coffee helps her regulate her blood sugar before eating. When I politely asked if there was any flexibility, the manager spoke to me in a condescending way and suggested she "just drink soda instead," which was inappropriate and uninformed. He also compared the situation to a child bringing in milk and said that would be allowed, yet stated that even outside water would not be, making the policy feel inconsistently explained and dismissive. Lastly, at the end he mentioned under his breath, "Is it really that big of a deal?" Policies are understandable. Lack of professionalism and empathy is not. read more

The restaurant has ample sitting with a very open feel with the high ceilings. The menu is hilariously extensive and is the Cheese Cake Factory for sushi. We decided to stick with the Haply Hour menu specials and they were a delight. The calamari was light, fresh and had fun dipping sauces. The veggie tempura was wonderful! Broccoli is so much more fun this way! We tried the tuna roll and California roll which were colorful and very fresh. The sunshine roll was delicious and full of flavor. The spicy tuna roll was also very good and then our belly's were full!! The staff was excellent and efficient! Kudos to the sushi chef.
