My wife and I took my son for his birthday as this is one of his favorite places to eat. He's been there about 5-6 times and we've never been. We had a fantastic server named Nick who was very attentive and made sure we were doing well with drinks and our appetizers. We ordered our main meal and I had the seared ahi, we wife had a beef dish and my son ordered the cod. All in all very good..... we told Nick we were celebrating a birthday and he brought out an ice cream that said Happy Birthday on the plate in chocolate. Downgrade in a few ways since the last time I visited. They used to have this awesome free appetizer perk if you checked in on Yelp but that's no longer available. My favorite part of this most recent meal was the shrimp tempura roll - those never seem to fail me. Last time I really enjoyed their crab salad, but thanks to the produce scares (we live in a sad, scary society), I've been steering clear of salad from anywhere - nothing specific against you here, Kabuki. I expected their Island Mule to be sweeter, but it tasted stronger than I would've liked it to - I guess that could be a good thing to some people. Unfortunately the calamari was overcooked. It's a great portion size but the rings needed an extra strong bite to chomp through, were rubbery, and not enjoyable to eat. This is my GOTO Japanese Restaurant for Sushi when I'm in the Tempe area. I always sit at the bar and the bartenders are always very friendly and helpful. They have one of my favorite beers on tap, Asahi Dry. They have late night happy hour from 8:30pm to close Sunday thru Thursday. My selection is usually the miso soup and a sunshine rool. We usually come here for happy hour and it's absolutely amazing but I don't know what happened here. We were put first on the waiting list since we came in towards the end of happy hour on a Saturday and were seated after a 10min wait. My salmon nigiri tasted good but the chicken karaage wings were way under-seasoned and the Alaskan rolls straight up tasted like old fish. I regret not sending the food back but we were short on time. This was extremely disappointing as I was showing my boyfriend this restaurant and really wanted to impress him with my go-to spot. This was such an incredible let down. I really thought I could rely on you Kabuki. That Alaskan roll was disgusting. He was so excited he even ordered 2 for himself and all 3 we had ordered were all incredibly fishy and smelly. The only good thing was the krab salad. My friend had been recommending this sushi restaurant in Tempe for quite some time and always spoke so highly of it. After spending the entire day moving on August 8, 2026, we were exhausted, hot, hungry, and extremely dehydrated, so we decided to finally give this place a try. When we arrived, we noticed the bartender assisting and acknowledging other guests. We were patient and gave her some time because we understand that restaurants can get busy. However, we waited approximately 6 minutes or possibly longer without being greeted, acknowledged, introduced to the restaurant, or even offered water. At that point, it wasn't about expecting immediate service--we simply wanted to feel acknowledged as customers. A simple "Hi, we'll be right with you" or offering us water would have made a huge difference, especially after such a long and exhausting day. We ultimately decided this wasn't the experience we wanted for our first visit. Before leaving, we spoke directly with the manager on duty and explained what happened. To his credit, he apologized for the experience and listened to our concerns, which we appreciated. What makes this especially disappointing is that my friend had recommended this restaurant to so many people, so our expectations were actually pretty high. Unfortunately, the lack of basic acknowledgment and hospitality made a very poor first impression. I hope management takes this feedback seriously because good food can bring people through the door, but good customer service is what makes people want to come back. read more

This was hands down the worst meal I've ever had. Literally everything including the water was awful. I should have looked at the pictures before ordering the sushi. I got the tempura roll and it was loaded with imitation crab and I had to convince myself to take a bite. I don't know if it was the eel sauce or the roll itself but I immediately spit it out. It was terrible. I tried the hibachi fried rice with shrimp and I was disgusted when I noticed they used tiny shrimp. I've never had fried rice with cocktail shrimp, they weren't even deveined. Ew ew ew. I needed to get the taste out of my mouth and tried my husbands chips, those were awful so I then had to dig my pistachios out of my purse to get that taste out of my mouth. I really enjoyed the sushi here! Living in the desert, I tend to be cautious about the seafood I eat--I've had both good and bad experiences around the Valley. Kabuki truly exceeded my expectations. The crispy rice was fantastic, and the rainbow roll with spicy tuna was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. Portion sizes were generous and more than enough for the two of us. We always love coming to Cabo tea for their happy hour. We just caught it at around 4:30 and happy hour ends at 5 PM. Our server was super nice and very helpful and explaining all the items for happy hour. We got some crunchy deep-fried tough along with some healthier tuna rolls. Everything was delicious. This place is great! My husband and I come here often and the restaurant has a good variety of food and you can't really go wrong on any of them. Tip: there are 2 different happy hour times for this location and it is definitely worth it! I came in for Late Night Happy hour and got a few sashimi: tuna, salmon, yellowtail, albacore. Price is 4.25-4.50 for 2 pieces for each type! The sashimi was fresh. I also got the spicy garlic edamame ( regular price) but this one was a little disappointing. I've always love this dish but this time they gave me the samba chili sauce on the side , to dip the edamame. I prefer them sauté the sauce in like how they usually do it before. Came here for happy hour. The prices were pretty good. Like $10-12 for specialty rolls and $6-8 for the basic rolls. The calamari was pretty good, crispy. And I really liked my Sunkissed roll with salmon and avocado and my salmon hand roll. I started off with the miso soup and calamari. We all pretty much ordered just the sushi and the karaage chicken was pretty crispy. The only reason I put 3 stars was because our waiter even though she was really nice kept not picking up our dirty plates so the table was full and we were trying to find space for everything we were ordering. We kept handing her and other waiters the dirty plates, but it's kind of common sense to pick up the dirty plates after dropping off more food. We were wanting to try the love boat that my friend kept talking about, but I guess it's only specific locations that have it. She did tell us about the love table but she wasn't quite sure what was in it. Maybe she was new and wasn't familiar Ruth the menu yet. My family goes here every year on Christmas Eve and they never disappoint. I really enjoy their cocktails and appetizers, staff is always super nice. I rarely leave reviews, but this experience was extremely disappointing. I came in with my baby and teenage son hoping for a nice meal together, and from the very beginning the service was poor. Our server immediately pushed one of the most expensive items on the menu without asking any questions about what we were looking for. When I asked simple questions about menu items, she seemed unfamiliar and told me to just read the menu myself. Things only got worse from there. My baby's food was brought out within minutes and placed on the table without any acknowledgment, utensils, or check-in--while the rest of our food took over 30 minutes. I had to get up and ask for utensils myself while trying to manage a toddler. Meanwhile, my son and I sat there watching her eat. When I asked about the udon soup I ordered, the server acted confused and pointed back to the menu instead of taking responsibility for not clarifying the order. Communication was rushed and dismissive the entire time. By the time our food finally arrived, my daughter was already done eating and no longer able to sit patiently, making it nearly impossible for me to enjoy my meal. On top of that, part of our order (a tempura roll) was cold and clearly not fresh. There was no follow-up, no check-in, and no effort to correct the experience. The server avoided our table entirely. Before leaving, I spoke with a manager and explained how poor the experience was, especially given that this was meant to be a special meal with my son before he leaves. However, no real resolution was offered at that time. I paid approximately $59 in cash and, given the level of service and overall experience, I am requesting a refund or store credit. I would appreciate being contacted to resolve this. Overall, this was one of the worst dining experiences I've had, and I hope this is taken seriously so it doesn't happen to other customers. read more

Stopped by for dinner on a Tuesday around 6pm. Host and server were friendly. Started with the mixed tempura aka shrimp and veggie ($11) - was fine with an assortment of 2 shrimps, asparagus, broccoli, zucchini, etc, maybe a total of under 10 pieces. This arrived pretty quickly, with a separate runner who delivered the food. Hamachi Sake Roll ($17) was surprisingly good, coming with 8 pieces with hamachi on top and salmon in the middle. Rose Roll ($15) wasn't great - there were only 6 pieces, carefully spread out so it covered the entire plate. The rice itself was not individual grains, rather clumped together as if it was extruded. Definitely pass this roll. Also split the BBQ Short Beef Ribs ($16.50) with our entrees - not bad, some chewy bits. It feels very overpriced for the quantity and quality of food you get. Would be more worth if we came during happy hour (they have pre-dinner and late night) ~ HH Mon - Fri: 3PM- 6PM Sat - Sun: 2PM-5PM Late Night HH Sun - Thur : 8:30PM - Close Fri - Sat: 9PM - Close ...but even then, I think there are other spots in the valley worth trying! read more

Dined 1/24/25: The meals were tasty however, I should've ordered Rice vs. the Udon Noodles w/ my Spicy Seafood Udon dish. The noodles were SUPER CHEWY but I assume that's how they are supposed to taste?! (I'm just not a "noodle" person esp if they are super chewy). This place has the best salmon skin handroll in at least a 20 mile radius, and I order it at every sushi restaurant. You have to order it "oldstyle" to get it in a cone instead of two smaller taco shaped rolls, and it's huge and comes with a big side of ponzu sauce. I like to sub the ponzu for spicy ponzu and my girlfriend likes to add cream cheese, if that's your thing. A must order everytime you go here, 10/10! read more

My family took me here on a Sunday afternoon for a celebration. This Kabuki restaurant is located at Tempe Marketplace and has been there for over twenty years. The place next door was packed, so we decided to check this place out because it was a shorter wait. Kabuki Japanese Restaurant has a number of restaurants on the West Coast with a couple of them being here in the Valley. They are part of the Kaizen Dining Group. We ordered some small plates to start off with for happy hour. The Fried Gyoza Dumplings, Wings and Edamame were all pretty good and reasonably priced. I am the only one in my family that eats sushi, so I ordered a couple of specialty rolls for myself. The Lotus on Fire Roll and Tiger Roll were both colorful and delicious and just the right amount of spice for me. Service was ok but not great. Kabuki is an excellent Asian Fusion restaurant. It is on my regular rotation of slightly upscale restaurants with a FUN menu to explore! Each experience leaves me anticipating the next time I'll be back, quite a treat to take anyone to when they visit. The atmosphere is laid back but slightly upscale. Not in a PF Chang's type of way, but in an easily with food/drinks it'll run you ~ $50/pp type of way. I usually dress up for this place but it's not required and folks show up in casual attire often. Restaurant is a large space in the corner of one end of Tempe Marketplace. There is a hostess stand right in front of the doors soon as you enter. The waitlist is online and you can join it if the crowd is heavy (which is mainly on the weekends). Our time to eat on Friday was 6 pm and there was no wait time when we got there a little after 6. Got seated immediately and the server came out with waters and menus. Booths are standard restaurant booths and were comfortable enough. Bathrooms on the other side of the restaurant were clean and spacious enough. Lighting a bit dark, but not dark enough to be mood lighting. Food and drink is phenomenal as always. I usually start with an appetizer or two. This time the whole table shared and got Shashito Peppers, Dumplings, and Calamari. This was enough for 3 - 4 people. Then for the rolls we just ordered random rolls enough for the table and shared from it as well. Maybe ~ 6 rolls or so. Got the Tiger Roll, California Roll, Avocado Roll, Eel Roll, Salmon Roll and a few others. If I had to order again for 5 people, I would have got another 2 apps and kept the same number of rolls for dinner. Drinkwise, Kabuki has an excellent Asian theme drink menu. Everything from Sake, Asahi beer, tons of wine, a full bar, and very creative Japanese mixed drinks. Things like Japanese Whiskey infused martinis, different flavors of margaritas with Asian themes, etc.. I got a bottle of Sake and polished it off. Not sure what type of Sake it was but it was at a medium/moderate price point. We also ordered a round of green tea shots for the table, which went down smooth. Last but not least, the star of the show. The real reason I take folks to Kabuki is for their dessert selection. While a high-end Japanese Restaurant might not be thought to have the biggest selection of desserts, Kabuki is specifically known for their fried ice cream! They have 3 basic flavors of ice cream which you choose from. Vanilla, Strawberry, and Green Tea then it's coated in tempura and flash fried in a skillet. When I came here on a date, one of those is MORE than enough for 2 people. But with a dinner with 5 people total, we needed at least 2. The whole table before ordering dessert implied it was OTT and wasn't necessary. But soon as the fried balls of tempura coated ice cream came out on a sizzling black skillet, the spoons all attacked the dessert. At the end of dinner there was not a single piece of ice cream or tempura left on both skillets. The table crushed the dessert. We got Green Tea and Strawberry and both went over super well with everyone. Finally, Service. We had one of the best waiters in the restaurant named Mo (Mohammed); Mo was both pleasant without being overbearing, helped provide guidance on the menu, and was fun to talk to. Great guy who made an already outstanding night out, that much better. As you can tell, Kabuki is one of my go to spots. Usually there every couple of months or so like clockwork. We had gone on a Saturday around 5:30pm and the restaurant was very busy, per usual on a weekend. My party was a group of 6 people. We had waited for a table for 20 minutes then were seated quickly. Immediately, a waiter came to get us drinks and get our order started. Once we had ordered, we waited about 35 minutes for our food but in the meantime, our waiter brought our drinks and ginger/wasabi plates. Minus 1 star due to everyone's plates coming out at different times. One person in our party did not get any sushi therefore his plate came out 20 minutes earlier than everyone else's. Even those who ordered sushi did not get their plates at the same time, all orders were given sporadically and it left some people out while others could eat. All sushi was phenomenal. Absolutely delicious. The fish, itself, was fresh and clean. I was pleased with how delicious all the rolls were. The pork belly hibachi fried rice was good- but if you are hungry and only order this dish, it will not fill you up. This restaurant is good for small groups of 2-3 people as most tables seat up to 4, but there are booths for bigger parties. Small groups will do better with service like when your plates come out at the same time for eating. Overall, all dishes were delicious and I would definitely go back with a smaller group of people. read more

After having a terrible experience next door at Gen BBQ, we decided to dine at Kabuki. We were seated immediately at the bar & were able to get our orders in quickly. Our bartender was very friendly, but the cocktails were average. However, that wasn't a dealbreaker for us. For dinner, I had the beef, shrimp, and veggie entree with fried rice. It also comes with a house salad & miso soup. No complaints on the food, it was good. The California roll was solid, the beef was tender, and the fried rice was flavorful. Overall, we had a pleasant time at Kabuki. The waitress provided a breath of fresh air after our crappy experience next door. My only feedback would be to work on those cocktails! read more

Very solid option for sushi! I recently moved to Tempe with my boyfriend and we love sushi so it was important for us to find a good and reliable place. We have been here a few times and it never disappoints. Never much of a wait although we do go at off times. Service can get iffy but we don't mind much. The ramen was SPICY but good, the flavor was excellent, the depth of flavor was good. The California roll was a perfect match for the spicy level. Greeted by a guy host, he was a little too sassy for me with the side-eyes to other employees as he was walking us to our table but maybe I was overanalizing the situation... The sushi was just sushi, good but nothing out of the ordinary, the calamari were good and tender and the edamame perfectly cooked. No complaints about the food. What really took it home for me was the drink!! The lychee martini was TO DIE FOR! I will single-handedly go to Kabuki just to get this drink!!
