Meat and rice Lamb Tikka Kabob

I came here to buy food and let the employee know before ordering that I have a gluten allergy. As soon as I walked in, I told the staff that I cannot have bread, gluten, or wheat. I even explained that gluten is found in wheat and bread because I wanted to make sure there was no confusion. The employee went to the back to ask if the meat and rice were gluten-free, and they told her yes. When I opened my food, there was bread inside the container. I brought it back to the counter and explained that I couldn't eat it because it had been contaminated. The employee then told me that I never said not to put bread on my food. That was frustrating because the very first thing I said when I walked in was that I could not have bread, gluten, or wheat. Instead of remaking my meal properly, he grabbed the bread off my food with his bare hands and told me, "You can eat it." I explained that once the bread touched my food, it was cross-contaminated and could make me very sick. He then said he would make me a new one, but he simply took my original container to the back and brought back what appeared to be the same food with the bread removed. I asked for a refund multiple times because I no longer felt safe eating the food, but they refused. In the end, I threw the food away because I didn't trust that it had been remade or handled safely. The lack of understanding about food allergies and cross-contamination was very concerning. People with celiac disease or serious gluten allergies rely on restaurants to take food allergies seriously. Based on my experience, I would not feel comfortable eating here again.

Nice made to order place in the mall. Chicken was fresh and we enjoyed the salad. They accommodated our request for no rice. The seasoning was good and you can tell it's not just food that was precooked and heated up. Clean counter space is another plus.

Chapli kabob and rice are some of the best I've ever had! For reference, other favorite chapli is at Aswana in Fremont. Also ordered the koobideh but thought the chapli the standout. Will be back to try the chicken kabob and other dishes!

Simple menu at the Southland Mall food court!

Wonderful Afghan food spot located....(of all places) ....the Southland Mall Food Court. Not a place I venture often but when someone told me about Kabul Express KabobI figure I give it try. Placed an order over the phone and was ready when I arrived at the time specified. The owner, Nasir was very welcoming, friendly, and quickly rang me up. QABILI PALAU - lamb shank tender, flavorful along with their special rice with raisin and candied carrots. Delicious! CHAPLI KEBAB - ground beef that's nicely seasoned, soft, with a nice crust and light crunch from the seeds/spices Both orders came with a green salad, Afghan bread, and a spicy cilantro, jalapeno-vinegar based sauce that just kicks everything up a notch! Reasonably priced with generous portions! With inflation, I was surprised that both items cost approximately $32 with tax and tip. Park near the movie theater entrance, take the escalator to the food court and Kabul Express Kabob is located across the way towards the right! Plenty of food court tables for dining. Definitely check Kabul Express Kebab out as their food hits the spot!

I got the beef koobideh kabob plate and it did not disappoint! All halal food, which is great for those with dietary restrictions. Thankfully they serve with brown rice because these dishes with white rice is not as good. I highly recommend the beef kobideh kabob plate. It comes with rice, salad, and bread. Good value price too. I would get this again in a heartbeat. Food came out quick and seating is easy in the food court as well.

I haven't been to the Southland Food Court in years! But we were in the area and I remembered the food court has actual food places. We were really there for the Indian food, but my husband never had Afghan food (the things you take for granted when living in the East Bay!) so we tried the Mantoo dish. We didn't know what to expect, but it was good. I don't think it's something I am used to, but it looked good and tasted fine. Initially there wasn't anyone at the counter, but after we pressed the bell someone came by. Our food was made quickly and this is a place we would try again. What I don't like about malls are that the food courts all have the same generic chain restaurants or else "fancier" places that are all run of the mill. Southland is unique in that it has actual restaurants that serve real food. Hopefully Southland will fare better in the near future and continue to allow these smaller businesses to rent.

Crazy ambitious menu with pizza, burgers, wings, kabobs, wraps and many Mid East favs like falafels, dolmas, gyro and babaghanoush. I only tried a couple of items, so I do need to try a few more things eventually. Order at the counter and food will get brought out. Seems like a place popular for take-out/deliveries. On a casual lunch I was impressed by the diversity in the place, as it is downtown Hayward. Young, old and cultural garb from several cultures spotted. Service at the register was friendly, dude gave off ownership vibes. Falafel Wrap ($11/4*) Very fresh and satsifying wrap. Big, soft and puffy pita bread is filled to the brim with fresh salad-like veggies. Chopped lettuce, tomato, onions and a couple of pickled items. Stuffed also with a decent amount of fat disk of falafel and a good dousing of tahini sauce. I loved the bites for the most part as I was full without feeling weighed down for the lunch hours. The falafels had good flavor but just didn't seem as crisp as I usually prefer, didn't seem fresh out of the fryer, which the places that are known for this definitely do. I especially liked the bites more when a pickled veggie entered the bite, so I should have ordered extra...next time. Beef Kabobs ($25/4*) Got this for take-out and it was still good hours later after a reheat. Beef is in small cubes and cooked pretty well done. A bit dry but at least it was flavorful. Definitely taste more Afghan in spicing/marinade, pretty bold with lots of garlic and herbs. De Afghanan out here in the east bay is the gold standard for these types of kabobs and those are cut into bigger chunks and are juicier by a lot. Kabob plates comes with a good amount of seasoned basmati rice, a pita bread, a small green salad and a small scoop of hummus. Even tho $25 seems a bit pricey, there is enough food to justify the price. I was able to make 1.5 meals out of it with a good dinner and a small work lunch. I actually want to try a pizza here and definitely a lamb kabob. I hang out in this downtown area often, so great having another casual option in my back pocket. Yeah Buddy!!
