First of all, there's nobody Japanese working in that restaurant. It was too dark and it didn't seem clean. Here is my experience. I walked in thinking this would be a great lunch. The first person I see is a Hispanic male sitting on a couch and eating something. He just stared at me and continued chewing on whatever was in his bulging mouth. I stood around awkwardly for 10mins before I asked him to seat me. With a full mouth he grumbled "sheat ow hibahi" I assumed he asked "seat or hibachi" . After being seated, I would never see this man again. I waited and waited, but nobody seemed to notice I was there to eat. There seemed to be only 1 Chinese man who passed me on occasion. After 15mins of waiting, I asked him to take my order. I chose a basic sushi lunch. The meal arrived very fast (almost too fast). My miso soup was too salty and the salad was piled high with gravy looking dressing. The dressing was good, but the amount of it overpowered every taste-bud I had. The sushi was the BIGGEST disappointment of my lunch. The sushi came before I was done with my soup and salad. The California rolls seemed too square and tasted bland. The actual Nigiri was a disaster. It had obviously been sitting in room temperature for too long. I assume they make a bunch of these and wait for customers to come in. The fish was warm and the rice had a okra like gooey stickiness. At the end of my meal, the Chinese man swing by and threw the check down. He didn't place it, he threw it. A simple sushi meal with 5 nigiri and a California roll was $12.00. I paid and left. The hibachi may be good, but please avoid the sushi there. Quite disappointing. Been here many times and it was good. They have connected the grill tables so there are three of us in the middle not facing the grill. Isn't that why we come here to watch them cook? Also, they squeeze you in here elbow to elbow with about 18" of eating room. It was difficult to decide how to rate Kabuto. Hibachi restaurants generally don't rank high on my list for Asian dining. However, Kabuto has great sushi, and that's what the husband and I look for when we go to Kabuto. His less culinarily (yes I made up the word) adventurous family loves the hibachi. It's certainly entertaining for groups and serves huge portions, but it is what it is: fairly generic stir-fry with lots of butter. The price for the hibachi meals seems steep, but it's a fun experience, especially for kids. Lunch prices are much more reasonable. We found Kabuto before it moved into its fancier new location, and the new digs are very nice. Since they have expanded though, we've encountered less of the family that owns the restaurant, and can't say I like the service quite as much as I used to. In summary: good for sushi ( would give it four stars if just for sushi), good for hibachi if you are into that kind of thing. Great if you are in a group with some less adventurous eaters. read more

Excellent food. Staff was very nice and attentive, chefs were entertaining. I found the prices to be a bit high, but since the food tasted so good, I didn't mind. I had an order of Edamame (which would have been even better with a tad bit of pepper or salt on it), and the chicken/shrimp hibachi dinner. Loved that we could get sriracha on the side too! What I was NOT a fan of - the lack of room to eat at the grill, and the fact you have to share a table with sometimes more than two other parties (our case was two other parties ), and the clientele this place attracts. The party at the table next to us let their children run wild, banging on plates, running behind our already cramped seating area, and just generally disturbing the whole meal. The family who got sat with us was great - well behaved kids, they spoke to us, and we had a great time. The other party at our table? Extremely rude. They essentially spread out so that the member of our party sitting next to them had little room to eat, and completely ignored our efforts to include them in conversation (this was a group of maybe 4-5 couples in their late 20's to early 30's who immediately asked for to go boxes and left as soon as the chef finished their entreés). Overall, I would definitely go back, just with a much larger party than 5 people so we're less likely to have the rude people at our table. read more

Visited twice for birthday parties and both visits the chefs both said the same offensive joke. When they broke an egg, they both commented that "it must be made in China". What they didn't realize is that we had Chinese people with us at our table, which made it very uncomfortable for everyone. Thinking about it on the drive home after dining at Kabuto, I really wasn't able to come up with anything that made Kabuto exceptional nor anything that I could rip on them for. It was the exemplary model for "above-average". Not a bad thing at all. The menu selection was typical of any other hibachi joint and the presentation of the chef prepping the table's food was nothing new. There was the initial fire burst, classic onion volcano, and the "here catch!" broccoli throw to guests. It's all fun and games but just nothing out of the ordinary that blows you away. And of course there was birthday or two with the drums and everything. Service was good. Food was good. Likability of staff was good. No issues whatsoever. Although Kabuto isn't a place I'd become a regular at, it's definitely an excellent spot if you're craving hibachi or haven't had it in a while. Yummy hibachi, long waits. I've had the sushi and scallops for hibachi dinner and my family have tried the chicken, salmon and snapper. Everything we've had, we loved. I have also tried a few of the sushi rolls and really enjoyed the as well. I also get the same cook when I'm there, I've seen more entertaining people than him, but still a good time. The wait is going to be very long, if you want hibachi I highly recommend making reservations because you will wait over an hour if you don't. I've made reservations and still waited 30 minutes after the time I said. If you want to get seated fast and don't care for a show, just do regular table seating. read more

I LOVE Kabuto!!! The chicken is great. I've had both Kabuto & Benihana but Kabuto gets my vote hands down. They actually have ranch dressing for your salad if you ask for it. They have a lot of vegetables & their chicken is superb. The only thing I really liked at Benihana was the filet...but it's filet, so it should be delish. Kubuto chicken is so good that I would actually prefer it over steak. That's saying a lot coming from this steak & potatoes girl. read more

There is just something great about Japanese Hibachi grills. There is always so much excitement and this gem hit the spot for me. I went here recently with my co-workers to send off someone who is moving down South. The interior is very simple but still neat and clean. The server we had was very attentive and friendly. I ordered the chicken/filet mignon combo with a side of noodles. This ALSO comes with fried rice, soup, house salad, and two pieces of shrimp. So come hungry. I eat here maybe twice a month with my girlfriend and we always have a good meal. we always do the non-hibachi (normal booth or table). the waitresses are very friendly and are always on top of things. I really like the sushi here they are nice size pieces and always well made. read more

Came in for lunch around 1pm. Got seating relatively quick. Waited about 10 minutes for a waiter to take my order. Ordered three sushi roll lunch which came with salad and miso soup. All food was really good. Sushi was great quality and there were many options to choose from for the lunch sushi. The ambiance is nice. It is very dim in here so some people may need to adjust to the light to read the menu. You have the choice to sit in the normal section or hibachi, whatever you'd like. Things can be a little leisurely so If you are in a rush or only have a small amount of time, I'd be hesitant, but if you have unlimited time you'll enjoy the pace. read more

Like Paige M., I have been going to Kabuto since it was in an old fast food place a little further up the road. I remember calling weekly during their move to find out when they would reopen! Now that I don't live in Oxford anymore, I don't make it to Kabuto as often as I would like but when I do it is such a treat. I come for the sushi and have never even tried the hibachi. The sushi is wonderful! The fish is fresh and melts in your mouth, the rolls are creative and delicious. My favorite is the Spicy Crunch roll and the Dynamite roll. Sometimes when a restaurant serves sashimi it has that clearly been frozen or tastes sour, but Kabuto's sashimi tastes fresh. Definitely worth the trip to Colerain. read more

Went here for a date night Saturday evening and got the sushi (non hibachi) meal. It took about 20 minutes to even have a waiter come to our table for drink orders but the place was packed. Despite the long wait, the appetizers and sushi we ordered came quickly and was perfection. My faves of the night were the spicy tuna and spider rolls. In terms of appetizers, you must try the yakitori, which is the most tender and delicious grilled chicken skewers you'll have in your entire existence. Came here for a birthday party. The hibachi meal comes with soup, salad, and fried rice. I also ordered two rolls of sushi. I figured I should try to the sushi because I love it and it didn't disappoint the prices were pretty good as well. I ordered the California roll as well as the avocado roll which didn't disappoint. I also ordered the chicken hibachi dinner and our chef was great. He did some pretty cool tricks I hadn't seen before at other places and he also had a trick squirt bottle of soy sauce which at first was a good scare for the person at the end of the trick but was hilarious for everyone at the table. Went here last night with my husband and our two good friends.. Expecting it to be really nice and a fun experience. We go to hibatchi a couple of times a year and we are usually at SOHO in tylersville.. SOHO is a bit pricey so we figured we would try this place out considering its 3.00 cheaper per person... Well no wonder it's cheaper.. Their "yum yum" sauce is not yum yum at all.. It is sour and not good.. As where soho has really good yum yum sauce... The same goes for the ginger salad dressing.. Here it was GROSS I should've gotten ranch and my husband agrees... The soup was pretty good I'll give them that... Then I ask how much it would be for extra broccoli and the server said 3.00... Like what?! No thanks... They then begin the entertainment.. Our guy was not very funny, he did not do many tricks, and the portions were so small I ate the entire plate and so did my husband and our other friend of ours.. Where at SOHO I can eat about half.. All in all I thought the place looked dirty and the wait time was way too long. I Definately will pay the extra money and go to SOHO next time!!!! Save your money.. read more

It's fun and pretty good. Some chefs are more show than others. I'd like to see more uniformity as we often get more boring ones while other hibachi chefs seem to be more lively. The food is usually quite good. My mom, who usually hates Japanese food, can when find stuff she likes. I find it authentic enough and the quality is fairly uniform. It is a bit expensive for the area, though, for dinner. You have to ask for chopsticks; unusual for Japanese restaurants where I have been before. I've visited this restaurant a lot over the years and was always pleased with the service and food, except when I didn't eat hibachi style, the food tended not to be hot. Today I took a friend visiting from out of town. The host at the front desk, who should have seated us, was so rude that we walked out without being seated. We were the only ones in the lobby. She was on the phone for a very long time. We were on a time schedule. When my guest politely asked could she help us, after we had sat patiently waiting for a long while, she snapped that she was on the phone. I've eaten at Kabuto three times over the past year and each time we enjoyed it. My daughter wanted to go there for her birthday last year, and then again this year, so we went with the family (7 of us). I also went with her for dinner just the two of us one time. Each time we went the staff was friendly and courteous, the food was good, and the atmosphere was ok. The inside of the restaurant is clean and appears to look like a renovated warehouse with exposed rafters. One half of the restaurant is set up so you can watch the cooks make your meal, this show is fun if you don't mind the interaction being loud and flashy. I can see why people find it entertaining but it's a little too much for me. My daughter likes the restaurant and the food, but not all of the attention you get when you go for a birthday dinner so the last two times we ate on the other side of the restaurant which is a little more laid back, with normal restaurant booths and tables. This is more my speed as well. I give it 3 1/2 stars but since you can't give 1/2 a star I made it three because while the food is good, and the restaurant is clean I probably wouldn't go to eat there with just my wife and myself, but my daughter (18) loves it and that is why we go. On minor detail is they don't play any music in the background either and I think music ads to the ambiance and atmosphere a lot, so without music, it feels like it's missing something. I also like culture and this restaurant, while the performance aspect has culture, the rest just feels a little generic to me. This is just my opinion and I'm sharing it so that others can get a feel for it when they go. A little pricey for what you get, but again, my daughter loves it and I'm willing to pay for it for her to have fun. I don't have anything bad to say about the restaurant and when one of the waiters messed up my son's order, they took care of it immediately so I'm not complaining because that happens sometimes and they dealt with it well by bringing him the shrimp he ordered and didn't charge any extra for it.
