From the Special Sushi menu: ceviche. (Somehow the nori tastes & crunches remarkably like potato chips, serving up ceviche.)

Kabuto is equal parts iconic and understated. Despite a location on busy Geary Street, the interior is calm and quiet, with professional, hard working staff. We started with a pot of nutty genmatcha and a warm mushroom miso. The special sushi menu at Kabuto delivered some standout bites: a bright ceviche nigiri with crisp nori, a light pear hamachi nigiri with a pop of grain mustard, and a tart Tao grape nigiri with red snapper, grapefruit, and dill. We found the aburi toro seared fatty tuna topped with green onion to be rich and creamy. The agadashi tofu is among the best I've had. Portions are on the smaller side, but high in quality. We noticed regulars receiving extra treats from the kitchen: Kabuto appears to be generous to their special customers. Kabuto delivers fresh and innovative sushi combinations in a lowkey setting. Recommended.

Amazing place! Came here for valentines and we were treated so well! Valentines omakase was amazing. All the courses were evenly distributed and highly recommend getting sake with your meal! The staff were all so friendly to us during our visit (especially Kate and chef Eric). High quality fish and beautiful plating. Came here off online recommendations and it did not disappoint. Will be coming back soon!

Celebrated Valentine's Day dinner at Kabuto and was pretty impressed with the omakase experience! It's a small, no frills space serving up an inventive menu of a la carte signature sushi and omakase options. The omakase was $140 a person, which was more than I expected since I had heard it was an affordable $99 a person, but it might have been inflated for Valentine's day? We enjoyed our dinner with a bottle of junmai daiginjo sake, which was crisp and clean with nice floral notes. It was 18 courses, with our favorite bites being the wagyu dumpling, baby maine lobster nigiri, and the toro truffle caviar nigiri. I liked that each piece of nigiri had its own unique pairing and topping, it felt well thought out and intentional. Out of the 8 pieces of their chef selection nigiri, none of them stood out too much besides the fatty tuna. I will definitely try more of their signature sushi offerings, like the hamachi pear and scallop apple I've seen in so many other reviews the next time I come here. If the omakase was $99 I would get it again, but I think the first couple courses and the nigiri were nothing spectacular at $140 a person. My only other complaint is the seating at the bar was a little cramped, my boyfriend said the servers kept leaning into him when delivering and clearing plates and my chair was constantly getting bumped. Saw lots of regulars in here, so I know this is a solid spot with loyal customers. I'll definitely be back to try the a la carte options!

You simply cannot beat the value at Kabuto. The price top quality ratio is insane as the fish is so fresh, beautifully/thoughtfully presented. It's definitely an authentic experience through and through. It's a small mom and pop shop, so best to make reservations! They are so sweet and kind here.

AMBIANCE: not the best "classy" dining experience as they're an older restaurant but it gives a very home-y, small older business feel SERVICE: outstanding, the waitresses made sure to tell us what we were eating and point it out on the menu before serving us (we did omakase) FOOD: delicious, none of the combinations were too out there like other more contemporary omakase places which i enjoyed! dessert is underrated PLEASE order it!

Most unique and tasty sushi I've ever had. Never touched the tamari. Service was impeccable. Loved sitting at the bar and letting the chef work his wonders. Will definitely be back.

I've passed by this place so many times and I'm glad I finally got myself there. Quality sushi, really unique flavors. They are so nice, the quality of the tuna was so good it melted in my mouth. Try the small appetizers like the hamachi pear... it's like nothing you've had before! They were very friendly and chill and offered suggestions when we were overwhelmed with choices. Definitely gonna go back for their omakase.

3.5 stars. We came for dinner to celebrate a birthday. On rainy weekday, it wasn't crowded. A regular who moved to the East Bay made a return to dine at the sushi bar, recognized by the sushi chef. I ordered the $99 omakase which was really nice with many pieces and different items to try. If I were to return, I would order again even though I was quite full. After a while, the nigiri pieces, beautifully presented, tasted about the same. My fav was the wagyu beef dumpling. It was the most flavorful in the omakase set. The seaweed dish was very good too. There's daily specials posted on the chalk board. Hubby tried the teriyaki chicken and didn't like it. Rice and miso soup are extra charge with the dish. Our friends thought the Nabeyaki udon was too sweet. BFF liked her sea bass entree but the potato croquettes were too mushy. We shared the grilled eggplant with miso and thought that was good. My clam miso arrived at the end of the omakase set. I didn't care much for it compared to regular miso. It didn't have enough Unami. BFF raved about the chawanmushi stating to was cooked perfectly. For dessert, the set came with a delicious poached pear. We also ordered tempura green tea ice cream but the batter was disappointing. The matcha creme Brulee was good, but very small. BFF got a strawberry mochi which is the kind you can buy at the supermarket. The Bananas foster was delicious. Service was very quick. As soon as your dishes were finished, they cleared the tables. I did have a hard time understanding some of the explanations given when each dish arrived to the table.

TLDR: WOW. For $99 omakase the dishes that were served were so good. The quality of the fish was phenomenal and we were so impressed by every dish. Even with an omakase the dishes came so timely and the servers were so attentive to our needs. I will dream about the A5 Wagyu. Definitely a place I would come again.

Came for the Omakase and priced for $99 per person, there's a large variety of dishes. There's nigiri, soup, salad, and a few speciality dishes - which were fantastic. The nigiri wasn't special, I think they just served us regular salmon nigiri vs a speciality item such as salmon toro, or a nicer cut/fish. Service is decent, not over the top.

Been to Kabuto twice, I enjoy it every time. Kabuto is actually the restaurant that made me enjoy raw fish a 4 years ago! Everything is always so fresh and delicious! The service was impeccable! We had a male waiter and he was incredible, he gave us complimentary appetizer as well as dessert and it was amazing! Kabuto has been around awhile and it is traditional Japanese vibes inside, nothing extremely fancy, but it is home-y and always so delicious!

Service was great welcoming was warm Small place but is the best and the food was incredible and tasty

Went here for a casual dinner after Valentine's Day. We did not opt for their Valentine's Day omakase menu, but ordered a la carte items instead. We personally felt like that was more worth it. Fish tasted super fresh. Service was impeccable. They were so friendly. Bar seating was a bit cramped, but we did it for the view of the sushi making. They gave us an item on the house that was super delicious, which was a bonus!

What we ordered: + San Ten Mori (assorted sashimi) [4/5]: The highlight of our meal was the yuzu wasabi that came with the salmon + amberjack in this set. It was sooo delicious and spicy. The fish were plated beautifully, and the quality was pretty good. + Shungiku Kama Sarada (chrysanthemum greens & duck breast) [6/5 - would recommend]: WOW. I was so pleasantly surprised by how fresh, crunchy, and acidic this salad was. The greens are amazing. On top of that, the duck breast was so tender and delicious-- I just wish the dish came with a few more slices. + Chicken Oyster [4/5]: I really loved how juicy this was. I normally don't like chicken because of how dry it is, but this was a great skewer. I wish the skin was a little less burnt. The chicken was also so thick that while the outside was juicy, the inside was a little drier. + King Trumpet [4/5]: Wow! These looked amazing when they arrived. I thought the flavor was great but the texture was a bit rubbery. + Kama Tama Udon (carbonara) [4.5/5]: Delicious! I couldn't stop eating this udon slathered in amazing thick sauce. + Chiizu Tori Katsu [4/5]: This was sooo good. I wish the cheese ratio was 3x as much, but the flavor and tenderness of the katsu is delicious. Huge props to Rintaro; my Resy reservation was initially cancelled due to an accident in booking, but the staff was so friendly and went above & beyond to help me get my reservation reinstated at a similar time.

While it's still a good restaurant and worth visiting, it no longer delivers the exceptional experience that made it one of my favorite spots in San Francisco.
