The place looks nice, the food is decent, but the price is salty. Very salty. Although I wasn't particularly impressed by their dishes, one of my friends swears they have the best Chirashi in town. So maybe it's just my own particular taste. Regardless, expect the usual business during peak dinner times, but even on Saturday evening when I came, it wasn't particularly crowded. They do seem to get reservations for the outside sitting, so keep that in mind if you'd like that.

I have come to this restaurant many times with friends or on date nights for dinner. It's a cute, intimate spot with some indoor and outdoor seating. If you come early enough, there usually isn't a wait. The nigiri and rolls here are pretty good, portion sizes are appropriate and prices are normal. Service is quick. If you're looking for a casual, go to sushi spot to satisfy your cravings in the Hayes Valley area, I'd recommend giving Domo a try!

Domo was a great experience for my friend and I! The outdoor seating was fine in 60-degree weather with the heat lamps. We came at 6PM and there was already a waitlist for indoor seating. What we ordered: + Black Pearl [4.5/5]: Great great umami roll. I think it could have some more depth like acidity or saltiness, but the black pearl roll is a great mouthfeel of fatty fish and caviar. + Castro Roll [3.5/5]: An average roll. + Poke Tacos [5/5]: HIGHLY recommend these. Super great portion for the price. Really delicious flavor. I think the ratio of fish to everything else is very well-balanced. Each bite has a great ratio of crunchy seaweed to a mouthful of fish to that umami avocado and sauce. I would 100% order these again as an appetizer. I would definitely come try again! The quality was pretty good, though nothing in particular blew me away except for the poke tacos. :)

Great neighborhood sushi spot with great service. Came in right before last call and ordered the California crab roll and a spicy tuna roll. The sushi taste super fresh and the the prices are really fair. Great spot to swing by and have a couple rolls and roll on with your day. For two rolls and a bowl of miso was $35. They also have specials that are hand written on the glass wall inside with other options that aren't in the menu. It's not a very large restaurant so seating can be limited if it does get busy but the inside is very clean.

Tried this place for the first time and I loved it! I came on a Monday night at 7pm, so getting a seat wasn't a problem. It's a smaller place though so that's something to keep in mind for a day that might be busier. The service was very attentive and friendly. I'll always order salmon collar if I see it on a menu and this one was huge! It's felt like a whole salmon fillet along with the collar. The black pearl roll was my favorite. It had a good seared flavor and the dollop of truffle pate on top wasn't overwhelming. The jalapeño hamachi was also a solid choice. I'd pass on the zesty salmon tempura roll next time, but I'm also not the biggest fan of shrimp tempura in general. I'll definitely come back here. I loved the quaint atmosphere and the generous amount of fish given in each dish.

A cute place in hayes valley that has seafood options. It's a small place but has a good options and is in a good location.

such a cute date spot. it's soo romantic. the seating outside r all benches facing the road and they have a heat lamp above every single bench. also u can ask for a blanket, they'll provide one to keep u extra toasty. now onto the food. i'm impressed by the ratio of yuzu in some of the dishes we ordered. it worked wonders with the salmon citron and hamachi crudo (OUR FAV) i can't stop thinking about it!!! and the black pearl (scallop + truffle another heavenly pairing) also had that hint of citron that never once overpowered the fish even tho u can taste it clear as day workers there are also attentive and personable, i so so recommend!

Not the best tasting sushi, but the cute space and ambience definitely deserve recognition. Being in Hayes Valley, a prime location, they still manage to offer reasonably priced sushi. The rolls are quite large and filling, which is nice. That said, nothing really stood out as special. Even the Castro Roll, w/ a unique name, is basically just a rainbow roll. Still, it's a great spot for a cute outing or a quick stop for bare minimum sushi rolls.

This is a very small restaurant with a simple menu. We went on a Saturday evening, and the wait was surprisingly only about 20 minutes. The service was okay: slightly rushed, but understandable given the small space and quick turnover. We started with the Negi Toro Roll, which was pretty standard. The Black Pearl Roll caught our eye with its interesting description, and we were told it tends to be hit or miss. Personally, I thought it sounded better than it actually tasted. The flavors don't go that well together. The Sunkis Roll was better, because I liked the combination of salmon and lemon. The real highlight of the meal was the Poke Tacos. We literally debated ordering another round. They come as a pair, but you can add a third if you're dining with an odd number of people. Each taco is a crispy tempura seaweed shell topped with poke and a generous heap of seaweed salad. I'd come back for the poke tacos alone, but otherwise, the food didn't leave a strong impression.

Cozy sushi spot with plenty of space right in the heart of Hayes Valley. I'm not a huge sushi lover, but I liked this this place wasn't just mood lighting and a high price tag. They had a good mix of rolls, and I left pretty satisfied after a dinner with 3 friends. They were pretty busy but there wasn't a wait on a Thursday night. Would come back and try more rolls!

Needed a quick bite and came to Domo as I heard they had ties to a very famous influencer's father. Not sure what I was expecting, but thought it would be more than low-quality nigiri. The service was good as they were attentive and seated me very fast. There is very limited seating. I opted into sitting at the bar as it was only available for parties of 1. The yuzu sashimi was good, but the nigiris were sub-par or low quality to my standard. It wasn't that great in my honest opinion. The sushi tacos were loaded, but just seemed like it was put together with a bunch of sauce.

My boyfriend and I were in the mood for sushi after shopping in Hayes Valley, and we discovered Domo on Yelp. Due to their limited seating, they don't take reservations. We arrived on a Saturday around 7 PM and found the place packed, with a party ahead of us and maybe one table available outside. We opted for inside seating as it was chilly outside (but there were heaters outside FYI). We were seated within ~15 minutes at a table. There were ~4 tables and some bar seating inside. We quickly fell in love with the cozy, intimate ambiance inside. The tables were spaced out nicely, and the table size was perfect for all the dishes we ordered--no issues moving anything around. The staff was friendly. Here is our order for the night: Large Sapporo Beer and Umeshu (plum wine): I was thrilled to see umeshu on the menu, as it is my favorite alcoholic drink! I am used to having it with club soda, so it definitely felt strong, but it was still smooth and tasty. Miso Soup: Great appetizer. Edamame: Comes in a very generous portion, perfect for sharing. Crunchy California Roll and Domo Roll: These rolls were good but, unfortunately, a little underwhelming. They were tasty, but not incredible. Omakase (4pc): This was the highlight of the meal! The nigiris were top-notch and the fish was very fresh. We'll definitely be ordering more nigiris on our next visit! Our meal was the perfect amount of food to satisfy us. The total, before tip, was $104, which I think is a reasonable price for the quality of the food.

This place was so so so so so good I almost cried eating the domo roll !! This is a cute little restaurant tucked in Hayes Valley that you can expect a waiting list at upon arrival. It is so cozy yet classy inside and you are greeted by the amazing folks who work there. The star of this night was the domo roll, to which I have no words to say other than that roll was FIREEEEE like each bite felt like fireworks exploding :,) I could eat like ten of these in a row. If you are ever in the area pleasseeeee make sure you try this because WOW. Must come back and have again !

Now for the reason of 4/5 which I may even opted for 3.5/5 if it were available. We were the first group of 9 to come in right at opening and were told that because we had a large group everyone was required to spend $70. That's not hard to hit considering you're eating out at a sushi restaurant, but the fact that we were told to spend at least $70 a person in order to be seated is crazy! We even asked what was recommended and the seasonal donburi or sake was the most popular. So now we went for those options, but still had to make up the remaining $32 per person that went for the sake donburi. Some people that didn't even want to drink opted for beer because they already got matcha next door. Service charge was already included yet the requirement to spend $70 a person just to dine here is ridiculous. I would come back, but not with a group of more than 4. Anyone that has friends or colleagues of more than 4 go elsewhere!

There is a sense of calm throughout the room, allowing the attention to stay on the chefs, the ingredients, and the details behind each dish without the distraction of a busy dining room. The omakase experience balances traditional sushi with more creative touches. Each course brings something different, from fresh sashimi and nigiri to warmer dishes like chawan mushi that add depth to the progression of the meal. The sushi highlights the quality of the fish while incorporating thoughtful flavor combinations, with dishes like scallop and the dry-aged fish courses standing out for their texture and seasoning. The sake pairing fits naturally into the experience, adding another layer without overpowering the food, and the sommelier's selections complement the progression of flavors across the meal. What makes Kusakabe memorable is the craftsmanship and pacing of the meal. The chefs take time to explain each course, making the experience feel personal rather than rushed. Sitting at the counter adds to the atmosphere because you get to see the precision and care that goes into every piece, from the way the rice is formed to the final brush of sauce on the fish. The pacing of the meal allows you to appreciate each course without feeling rushed, and the team's attention to detail creates a rhythm that keeps the meal engaging from start to finish. Kusakabe feels like a place made for special occasions, celebrations, or anyone looking for a more elevated Japanese dining experience. It combines technique, hospitality, and creativity in a way that makes the entire meal feel like an event rather than just a dinner. The balance of traditional and modern elements, along with the warmth of the service, leaves you with the sense of having experienced something complete and thoughtfully composed.
