My friends and I came here on Sunday afternoon. The restaurant was not busy when we came in, so we got to choose where we wanted to sit. The restaurant was spacious and clean. However, it was kinda muggy inside because it was warm outside. The staff was nice and welcoming, too. She was patient with us as we figured out what we wanted to eat. I ordered the Chicken Katsu. The chicken was tender and crunchy. My friend who ordered a sushi roll also enjoyed her meal. Everything tasted fresh, and the meal was very filling. The portion was generous, and maybe I was too tired and hungry from all the walking, so I ate the whole dish. Overall, we enjoyed our visit to Kazoku Sushi. Surprisingly great food! Well above average for an unassumingly low key Japanese restaurant. Friendly service, cozy dark out of the way peaceful away-from-the-world off-the-beaten-path kinda vibe. For a mid-afternoon late lunch, we weren't really in the mood for sushi as I usually am, so we ordered: Agedashi Tofu - thin slices of deep fried tofu with a delicate crust in the traditional soy glaze. Fresh and on point and not greasy 4.4/5 Chicken Teriyaki - waited a few minutes for this one but this totally exceeded my expectations, as the slices of chopped chicken breast and thigh slabs were PERFECTLY grilled with everything MOIST and with the lightest bits of char to dial in the flavor. Not burnt, but juicy! Skinless too, so that makes this main even healthier with a big scoop of Japanese short grain rice and a serving of stir fried broccoli crowns, onion and zucchini alongside. I came for the "Late Night Menu" on Friday night. The late night menu was updated with a little less items (forgot to take a pic of the new menu). The Japanese beers are no longer $5, but reg price is $6 so not too bad. Fried oysters were good but I don't think they are whole oysters like other places, not sure, but you can see they are flat. A small shop kind of hidden away, you normally wouldn't think this place is offering much, but I was surprised by the quality of their fish. I didn't order much, but from the 2 rolls that I ordered, they had solid quality and didn't skimp out in favor of putting more rice on the rolls. I came here on Saturday afternoon for a takeout order. I got the Lion King Roll, Salmon Lover Roll, and Caterpillar Roll. It took around 30 minutes to get my order. I went up to the hostess in the front for pickup, and she checked for my order and handed it. The restaurant was at half capacity since I got there around 4pm. It seems like a nice place, so I definitely want to try dining in next time. The sushi was amazing! The rice was soft, and the fish tasted so fresh. The Lion King Roll was flavorful and creamy. The Caterpillar Roll had the sweet unagi and creamy avocado. The Salmon Lover Roll had the hint of lemon zest that paired well with the salmon and gave it a bit of tartness. I treated myself to a solo lunch and sat at the counter close to the sushi chef. This is a local owned sushi restaurant run by a Korean couple so some items off the hot menu are Korean inspired. I felt that the menu itself is a bit pricey, so this is a low 4. For the sashimi combo I received three slices of salmon, two hamachi, and three tuna. The cuts of sashimi were rather thick so I appreciated that. My favorite was the tuna followed by the hamachi. Perilla leaves were used for plating but I really enjoyed pairing it with the hamachi and tuna. I thought the wasabi and ginger were great quality and finished all my ginger. The goma-ae was simple and very bonito forward which I enjoyed. Lastly, the saba nigiri was okay, but perhaps I would get a different nigiri next time. The service was okay, nothing standout. Right by the beach, I'm surprised not more people stop in for a bowl of ramen here. With an unassuming storefront, it's a hidden gem in the Richmond District for sure. I spent a lot of time in the Richmond growing up and have been spoiled by the number of Japanese / sushi / ramen options in the area. There was everything from somewhat sketchy family-friendly diners and sushi boat joints to smaller restaurants with sushi counters serving more high end fish. For most of my adult life, I gravitated towards the latter, which refined my taste, but we had to find an in-between option with the kid (a young one who won't appreciate omakase anything). Enter Kazoku. When we first moved back to the Richmond, we tried many similar places up and down Geary and Clement. The ones that were family friendly seemed to compromise on quality. Not Kazoku. This has become our regular joint for the past two years, and we have yet to have a meal that disappoints. The hot food is always good. Tonkatsu ramen with nicely done ramen eggs, generous portions of braised pork belly (could be more tender but still good), kelp, and most importantly, rich, complex tonkatsu broth. So many places serve lackluster broth and call it ramen, and it actually makes me angry. Teriyaki chicken and tonkatsu over rice are always healthy options for the kid. Here, they use fresh meat and ingredients, generous thick cuts, freshly-made sauce. You can just taste the difference. Sushi, sashimi, and rolls at these diners have always been hit or miss but not here. We've tried all the rolls and are consistently impressed with the quality. The one sushi chef here spends a lot of time behind the counter -- even during off hours, I see him there prepping, examining, experimenting, and the end results reflect his passion. The place is cute and clean. Dim w elegant decor and lively enough on a Friday night with a full house and sports on the screen but very family friendly -- there's always a table or two with kids. We sat at a table near the sushi bar where the masters were going to work. They also had a tv playing the football game which I appreciated. The place had a modern feel without being pretentious. We came for soup and ordered a couple starters. The jalapeño bomb was delicious. Just the right amount of heat with the pepper and spicy tuna, and it was covered in sauce which we loved. We also had a tempura shrimp sushi roll. The sushi rice was perfect. It's been a long time since I've had rice that delicious on a roll. I definitely want to come back and try their signature rolls. The soups- which this place might not necessarily be known for- were amazing. My partner for that tonkatsu. The pork belly had a nice charred flavor to it and the broth had a hint of smokiness. It was better than a lot of ramen I've had in the city. I ordered the beef udon. It came in a cast iron pot that it kept it warm my entire meal. My guest says it is not as good as their competitors. Kazoku Special Roll - This is a hit, I LOVED the crispy green onions on top of this roll! Not a complaint but this roll was bigger than normal, I had a hard time putting an entire piece into my mouth because biting it in half was just too messy. Sake Maki Roll - Good, fresh. But I would have preferred slightly wider slices, especially since their Kazoku Roll was so much more generous. In summary, come here for the sushi. Atmosphere - Small local business. Street parking, but plenty of parking. Open 6 days a week from 5pm to 9pm. Weekends noon to 9pm and closed Mondays. Service - This is where they fell short. It was not bad service, but not good. This is my local go to sushi spot. I raved about this place in the past and hate to only give it a 4/5 but the last experience was disappointing. There was just an abundance of gnats flying around getting into our food and drinks. Hopefully this is off night. They also recently reduced their opening times. Cute interior with tea pots stacked on display on the wall. There's a sushi bar as well where you can kinda see the chef make the sushi. Service was average with our server taking our plates after we finished eating them. 8 piece Sashimi: I was hoping this would have been like their 16 piece I see on Yelp but 2 pieces of each instead. However, we got 4 pieces of salmon and tuna. A little disappointed I didn't get to try their other fish but eh. The sashimi itself is very average. Lacking a lot of flavor that usually shines in salmon. The tuna also felt lack luster and a little dull in color, lacking freshness. The sashimi also had a slight fishy taste to it. 3/5 My Special Roll: Very decadent roll. I like the topped crab, adds a nice texture to the roll. It is a little excessive with how stacked that roll is though. Definitely bang for your buck but overall it's a little bit too much. 3.5/5 Bay Bridge Roll: This was a masterpiece. Really nice touch of ponzu to the fresh hamachi. The jalapeño and spicy tuna added a nice kick to each bite. They also used crab for that slight crunch texture. 5/5 Overall, not a bad experience. While looking for a place to eat in the Richmond District of SF, I found Kazoku Sushi through Yelp. I came here on a Saturday afternoon and the restaurant was empty (initially) except for one table in their outdoor dining area. They only have two tables outside, but plenty indoors. We ordered the 8 pcs sashimi ($25) and chose salmon and yellowtail for the sashimi. The fish was excellent! Soft, buttery, and fresh! Their sushi fish was definitely great quality. We also ordered the 49ers roll ($15), which is crab and avocado on the inside and salmon and lemon slices on top. The 49ers roll was really good! Mainly because the salmon was really good and that alone made the rest of the roll good. Our service was just okay. I wouldn't say it was exceptionally good, just decent. We had to ask for a lot of items, which should have been brought out automatically. Our waitress lacked energy and spilled water all over our table and barely wiped it up. We had to ask her to clean it up a second time and replace our napkins that got soaked. One other thing to note was that they give very little wasabi with the sushi. I had to ask for more wasabi twice, and I could have used more after that. It's okay if dining in because you can keep asking for more, but if you are getting takeout, make sure to ask for extra upfront (if you like wasabi). Overall, in terms of quality of food, Kazuko Sushi is a great sushi restaurant with excellent fish. read more

Sushi doesn't go well without wasabi for me. And what they served was rather scoped out of a cold box or something. Didn't taste anything like wasabi. My friends and I finished a hike around Lands End and needed sustenance asap. We located this sushi restaurant on Yelp of course and made the 1 mile trek over. We made the horrible mistake of sitting outside, it was cold and windy, we thought the shutters would blow off and our faces were going to get frost bite. Other than that, the meal was a 5 for sure. We had half off bottle of wine, the sashimi combo, and two rolls, a bay scallop roll, and the bay bridge roll with spicy tuna and ikura. All the dishes were great, the sashimi and bay bridge stood out the most. So fresh, buttery, bright, creamy, sweet, tangy, everything you'd want. Service was fast and friendly. TLDR: nice Japanese restaurant hidden in the outer Richmond. Worth the journey to the outskirts of the city -- Kazoku is way out in the outer Richmond and can be difficult to find parking. However the sushi is pretty good and the restaurant is great for a causal dinner. The place was fairly empty on a weekday after work, so service was pretty relaxed and I have no complaints. The Kazoku Special Roll was good, but I actually really liked and preferred the Bay Bridge Roll. Overall, I'd definitely recommend trying this place if you're in the area. After visiting Golden Gate Park, my partner and I were craving sushi so we decided on Kazoku which we found because of Yelp. It was a Saturday night so I wasn't sure how packed it was going to be but to our surprise there were a few empty tables. We were told we can sit anywhere we would like which we always love! We ordered quite a few appetizers including the green salad, cucumber salad and potato croquette's. Everything was delicious and the croquette's came out piping hot, they were so tasty! Charges $1.00 for a "bagging fee" on to-go orders (they don't tell you, they just charge you.) I think a whole dollar is a lot for that. So, with my future orders, I'd tell them no bag needed. And the next couple of times I didn't get charged. Came in today and I was charged! When I confronted them about it, the girl said it's not just for bags, but for boxes too. I have a restaurant industry background, so I do understand costs for supplies, etc. but I've never been to a restaurant in SF that charges bag fees like this. Perhaps build the supply costs in with the food...because generally, customers won't like this type of business model. I get a nickel & dime feeling from this place and it really puts me off. Got takeout on a Saturday afternoon and it wasn't too crowded. Ordered a chirashi bowl ($30), hamachi lover roll ($17), and an unagi don ($23) to share for three people. The chirashi bowl came with hamachi, salmon, tuna, white tuna, mackerel, and seaweed salad. The fish was super fresh and thickly cut. Nothing was too fishy (although it did have the distinct flavor that indicated that it was fresh. I feel like there should be a different word for that than fishy because that has a negative connotation, but I degress). The slabs of fish practically melted in my mouth and the texture was great. The natural flavor of some of the fish, however, was not as strong as other places that I've been to, but it was enjoyable nonetheless. In particular, I enjoyed the hamachi and appreciated how the natural sweetness came out in each bite. Surpringly, the seaweed salad was one of the best flavors in the dish and was refreshing with the seasoned rice and fresh fish. One thing to note is that there wasn't that much rice in the chirashi bowl (surprisingly!) but I guess I'd rather have thicker cut pieces of fish than less fish and more rice. The hamachi lover roll was really good! There was a slight spiciness from the hamachi in the roll, which complemented the creaminess from the avocado and the fresh hamachi on the outside. A good rice to other ingredients ratio. If you love hamachi, try this roll! The unagi don was good but I wish there was more rice (I guess I'm just a big fan of carbs). The unagi had good flavor even without the unagi sauce, which my friend asked for on the side. This place is on the more expensive side, but sometimes you just gotta treat yourself. One thing to note is that we weren't super full after this meal, so unless you wanna ball out, don't come here when you're starving. read more

I was looking for a sushi place on the western side of the city and came across Kazoku on Yelp. The restaurant is tucked away on a remote part of Balboa Street in the Outer Richmond near Ocean Beach. It looks unassuming from the outside because the area is mostly residential and seems like a place where you wouldn't find a sushi restaurant. Upon walking in on a Saturday afternoon, we were the only ones in the restaurant and that was a bit off-putting at first, but the food quickly proved us otherwise. We ordered the gyoza, tonkotsu ramen, Kazoku Special roll, and Bay Bridge roll. While every dish was mouthwatering, the highlights were the gyoza (super juicy and flavorful) and the Kazoku Special roll (I've never had a roll quite like this before--the fried green onions topping the rolls bring a crunchy texture that complement the softness and chewiness of the fish really well, and whatever the sauce is was rich and simply chef's kiss). If you are in the area and suddenly craving sushi, I highly recommend this place! By the time we left the restaurant, there were a handful of customers in the restaurant, which speaks to its ability to attract people despite its hidden location. read more
