Our favorite sushi restaurant! We love coming here. The fish is fresh and large servings, they have delicious creative rolls, and the staff is friendly. They can accommodate gluten free, and vegetarian (including Asian vegetarian no onions/garlic). What I love most and unique: their sushi rolls are a thin layer of rice. Unlike other restaurants with a thick layer of rice in their rolls. My favorites: hamachi and Salmon sushi, Summer lettuce wraps (unagi, salmon, albacore), Hawaiian Breeze, and Monster in Laws. My daughter took the SF Ferry to visit me. So I saved this restaurant for us to come together for Happy Hour. Quality/Quantity - It has been too long since we have been back, and I am so glad we came. And I have been "dry" for a week, so it was nice to come here for Happy Hour. We almost ordered one of each sushi roll off of the HH menu. Hamachi Jalapeno Roll - Changed to make it into a roll for $2.50 more. My favorite of all the rolls. California Roll - Good, but it could have been rolled tighter. Decent quantity, especially for HH. Avocado Roll - Generous avocado and perfectly ripe, creamy, buttery, etc. Spicy Tuna Roll - Good. Spicy Salmon Roll - This was more spicy than the spicy tuna roll IMO. Probably my second favorite roll. Shrimp Tempura Roll - Again, good. And of course, the HH Asahi Draft beer. Not sure if that came in a 12 oz or a pint? But it did come in an ice cold frosted mug, thank you! Overall the food was 5 stars! And I am so glad we are back in this neighborhood. Atmosphere - Small local restaurant. Limited indoor seating. Not sure if the outdoor seating is theirs or the tap room next door...? Plenty of free street parking. Open 5 days a week for dinner; 4:30 pm to 9 pm; closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Service - Good, both the lady and owner took care of us. My only suggestion is that it would have been nice to have been informed me it was going to be $2.50 extra to change the Happy Hour Hamachi Jalapeno Hand Roll to a maki roll. I probably would have still said yes. Price - $70 + tip. Very reasonably priced. And as all 3 of us are light eaters, we actually could have had one less roll; so dinner would have/should have only come out to $60, which is inexpensive for Japanese and really inexpensive for SF dining. But you know that because you are following my daily dining, lol. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success since 2004. We have been customers since then. We arrived at happy hour and had a few rolls. They were all good but the California roll was the best I ever had. Very full and creamy texture of the fresh avacado. Usually California rolls are boring and dry with my expectations set very low. We were very surprised and now have raised the bar for future California rolls. They have been consistently our neighborhood favorite, seems like anything we order is tasty and looks amazing :-). On a whim I decided to try this place and I'm so glad! The service is impeccable, very informative and quick. They had the Laker game on which is expected, but the TV is off to the side which I appreciate so the ambiance was chill with good music and good vibes. As soon as my party of 3 were seated we were served water and cucumber salad which they should bottle and sell in bulk. It's so tasty! We tried the chicken karage appetizer, seaweed salad, side salad which was delicious and a huge portion along with a few rolls and some mochi for dessert. I love this place! I came to this place every year for the last 7 years and it never disappoints. The owner of this place is so sweet and accommodating and they are very caring about all their customers! The fish here is the star, it's so fresh and the cut of the fishes are good size. Happy to have this spot on Balboa! We got the Notorious V.E.G. and the veggie vixen, along with a seared sablefish nigiri special. It was all delicious! Love this place already! I live nearby and have been trying all the food places in the area. The space was smaller than what I expected we came around 5:30 on a Wednesday night and beat the crowd. They give pickled cucumber as a small appetizer which was delicious and a pleasant surprise. Their menu has very unique rolls and both rolls my friend and I got were quite delicious. We inhaled our sushi I forgot to take a picture! The service was spot on. The person serving us was super friendly and staff was very tentative with refilling our water. I feel SO fortunate to live close to Sushi Bistro. It is an intimate space with only a handful of tables and a small staff. Both times we have been in, the quality, portion size, and preparation of everything we ordered has been phenomenal. The fish is always fresh and flavorful and the rolls are very thoughtfully crafted with ingredients that compliment the fish well. Be sure to ask about the specials, as their fish selection is always changing with the seasons and availability. Sushi Bistro quickly became a family favorite. It was referred to us by a friend and at first taste of the food, the quality stood out. We were seated right away and greeted with smiles by the owner, David and his staff. We were given some delicious pickled cucumbers to start. My 7 year old daughter loves Tuna sashimi/nigiri and once she got a taste of one, she wanted to order a couple more. My wife got the tempura udon which was soothing for a cold night yet the portion was very generous. I opted for various nigiris and the African spider. All stand out dishes. I loved the nigiris so much I've ordered the nigiri 10 piece omakase since so I get to taste various cuts and offerings. 3.5-4 stars! We ordered our food togo! Make sure to order well ahead of time. We ordered on a Friday at 615 and said our order would be ready by 7. It was not ready until 720. A bit disappointing For 6 people we got tempura as an appetizer, sushi rolls, sashimi salad, chicken teriyaki, Japanese curry with katsu. The tempura was crispy but a little heavy on the batter. And you can't go wrong ordering any sushi rolls! My favorite would have to be the sashimi salad- the cuts of the fish were huge and tasty! I would come back just for this. The roll was so good especially if you like unagi (eel). We really went there for the omakase and sad to say we were a little disappointed. The portion is big which is great but the selection wasn't that great. The salmon belly which is my favorite and i waited to eat at the end, wasn't really what salmon belly should taste like. We have been coming here for over 3 years and it's by far the best Japanese spot me and my girl ever been in the city after living here for more than a decade. I usually order the chicken teriyaki bowl with tempura. And some agedashi tofu and the sesame chicken with the sauce. Also the yellowtail is fire. We usually just get the same thing but literally the quality and consistency is absolutely amazing. The yellowtail quality has the freshness to it. The chicken or agedashi is fried/cooked just right. Where it's not too burnt but just crisp and not soggy either. Their to-go is very well done too. The packaging is probably the best and also convenient. I've seen some other spots that have so much nicer packaging but the food is minimal and most of the packaging is empty space (but it looks nice?). Nah, I want the food bruh. Pack it up nicely where it doesn't leak and give me that fat portion with great quality. And also what makes this place even more dope is their customer service is by far the best I've ever been to. In any restaurant. I feel like I'm in a fine dining restaurant but I'm just in the Richmond lol. What's consistent and what I really like is the servers or whoever is nearby, they will take away any trash(wrapper) empty plates. And it's not in a way where it's like ok you gotta leave now. And tbh, it's rather efficient and more places should do this. Hopefully covid-20 doesn't hit cuz we miss going here and not just ordering to-go cuz the inside is a vibe. They be playing my jams too. We came across this restaurant as it was pretty much the only sushi restaurant that allows outdoor seating in SF. Seating was very limited though. About 4 tables. We came here on a Sunday night and it was quite busy. We were one of the last parties that were able to order through their online site. We ordered around 7:30pm but didn't get our food until 9:30pm. We actually felt bad because many food delivery workers were taking it out on them. 2 hour wait is probably not worth it, but the 3 people that were working there was respectably hustling hard. They also hooked it up for us. They provided some edamame and sake while we waited. The nigiri pieces they provided were massive too! We were in shock. I'd come back again if they could do nigiri like that all the time. I'm salivating just thinking about it. As for the rolls, I'd recommend the 49er if you love salmon! read more
