I'm glad to see that the Kac-Ka-Pon is open again, it's been a camp tradition for many years to eat here. We've always enjoyed the cooking here, it's down home country cooking and it's always delicious! The staff are friendly and polite and you always feel welcome here. The only dig I'll give this place is that it's 100% not fast food. In fact, it's more like glacial pace food - last time we were there we waited almost 40 minutes for our order to come out. My family and I came in for a quick lunch after hiking around. It's a no frills place, it's straight to the point, and down to earth. The menu is basic American fair - nothing fancy. For the kids menu - Mac and cheese and chicken tenders with fries. My kids ate their food with no issue. Hubs got a simple burger and I ordered off the kids menu and got Shrimp with fries. We came back for some dinner this time. Restaurant was still nice and the staff was great as always. They play some pretty good music too. Onto the good part, the food. The ham and mash were great says the wife. She enjoyed it. We shared some cheese sticks also which seemed to be home made. They were good. I had the chicken breast. It was seasoned well but was very over cooked and dry. The top looked great, the bottom not so much. I think that could definitely use some work at the price charged. With that being the only bad thing, I will still be back as I know that was just a bad night. So after not eating to much, we decided to try the in house made coconut pie. Hello melt in your mouth most wonderful taste ever. Whoever is baking them pies does it with love. I can't even describe it. It's just sometbing you have to experience. It's unfortunate I have to give 1 star. The food here us pretty good and the servers are always on top of everything. But, after going there and getting basically a lunch type meal for four people, the price including a tip was ober $95. Thats ridiculous. Its sad that Ive been going here for over 30 years, minus when they closed down for a bit. Never in my wildest imagination would I think Id be charged $95 for some wing dings, a chicken sandwich, a club sandwich and 2 side salads. We went to Outback 2 weeks ago and got 4 steak dinners and a appetizer for $90. Sorry to say, we ate our last meal at Kac ka Pon today read more

Just moved to Wardensville and I like to call this place CRAP-ka-pon. It was terrible like terrible. The food was either super burnt or old. It took forever to get a refill on tea... The waitress gossiped about other employees and was so loud about it. If you're old and don't have taste buds then this is the place for you.. Let me tell y'all about this turkey meal they have every Sunday. It's like thanksgiving dinner but without having to put up with your family. Or wash dishes. Turkey, STUFFING, and the only cranberry sauce I actually don't hate. If you want fancy, you're gonna have to go to the city. Ok. This place kinda looks like a nursing home inside BUT you're here for the food. Driving east after a few days in West Virginia the restaurant options are few and far between near the Virginia border. The Kac-Ka-Pon was a pleasant discovery. It is a no-frills diner but clean and with good service. The parking lot was filled at 2 pm on a weekday., that tells you something. I had a pork barbecue sandwich that reminded me of what barbecue was like in the east until the southern style took over. Likewise, the homemade pickled beets took me back to Franklin County, PA. I would have loved to have had one of their homemade pies but I was filled and had to get back on the road. I would definitely stop here again. read more

The Appalachian Virginians have a cuisine and this is it. Simple, tasty, meat and potatoes pan fried deep fried country goodness that doesn't have that big city price tag. The food of the mountains isn't the barbecue of Eastern Carolina, the crab cakes of Maryland or the quintessential banal stuff of Northern Virginia or the USDA prime $teakhouse of DC. This is the good stuff that can be made from cows, yard birds, grains and fry oil with a helpin of veggies to balance out the meal. This little restaurant does this food the justice it deserves and serves it with a smile. If you are passing through Wardensville on the way to a camping trip or a ski vacation it's worth the stop. read more

First, my rating system. Three stars if I'd go back, four if I want to be a regular, and five if I'd go out of my way to be a customer. We stopped here after a weekend of backpacking in the area at about noon. We were a party of six and although the restaurant was busy, we were seated quickly. Breakfast stopped at 11am, but the menu offered plenty of choices. The turkey dinner special was good, as were the burgers. One of the party had the chocolate cake and raved about it. Our server was really good, fast and accurate. Prices were pretty good, what I consider a good value. We'll be back if in the area. read more

If you're looking for comfort food along the trip between the Washington DC/Baltimore areas and the increasingly yuppified George Washington National Forests, the Monongahela National Forest, and the Potomac Highlands, Wardensville may be a nice place to stop along Route 55 coming out of I-81, almost exactly 100 miles from Washington DC. There are a couple of antique shops worth the visit, a gas station, and several restaurants. One of my favs is the Kac-a-Pon, a no-nonsense, hearty comfort food eatery. From meat loaf, to roast beef, turkey with dressing, and outstanding home made desserts, the place is worth the stop. Don't expect the world because you won't get it. It is a genuine country place where you will get good food and friendly service in generous portions. The ambiance is country, the clientele is country, and that's not a pejorative, it is what the traveler is looking for in that part of West Virginia. I've been there several times now and have never had a bad dish. As a matter of fact, they were more than generous by making chicken especially for my Black Lab who was sitting outside wondering where his dad had gone. I'm a little torn here. Honestly, the food was good (breakfast). Our waitress was lovely and speedy and did a great job. But the other customers in the restaurant decided to spend 15 minutes having a loud discussion that I won't repeat because it would be unseemly. It was very racist and so upsetting that we cut our trip short and got the heck out of town. I've never heard racism screamed out loud like that without cameras around, which I think is really lucky for me I guess, but I've also rarely felt so uncomfortable in my life. Is it the restaurant's fault? No. But I can't recommend the place. And in future will be telling people to avoid Wardensville at all costs. I should note that the conversation was likely for our benefit, as the gentlemen kept looking in our direction as the conversation hit its loudest points. Not sure if this makes it better or worse but we got the impression it wasn't random. I hate to impose this on a restaurant like this, especially when our server was so pleasant. The Kac-Ka-Pon is a family-style restaurant situated on a somewhat busy road in a small, rural town of Wardensville, WV, which is between Baltimore, Maryland and the Appalachian mountains. Mr. X's family is from West Virginia, so we generally stop here on our way in. The experience is usually mixed-- basically O.K. food, but it varies in quality. Don't go there thinking everything's home made, because it isn't. The first problem is the wait times. Even with a half-full restaurant, there's usually a good wait for anything to come out, even salads and soups or other starters. One of the main things we liked about K-K-P was the hybrid "white/wheat" unique home made dinner rolls. When Mr. X and I first sat down and ordered our drinks, we made it a clear point that we wanted rolls right away and to "keep 'em coming." Drinks came, but rolls and butter didn't appear until the food came, which was about 45 minutes in, far too long of a wait. When the rolls did come, it was only two-- one for each of us, which, as you know by my previous writings, is unacceptable for the two of us. After the 30 seconds went by for us to devour the rolls (we were starving by this point), we waited and waited and waited but no more refills on the rolls until we stopped our server to ask for them. So much for the "keep 'em coming," right? The rolls used to be excellent, and one of the main reasons Mr. X and I stopped here. On previously visits, they were cleverly half whole wheat and half white on the same roll, and they were unmistakably made in house. Now, they are only white, and sadly, nothing special, I do not know if they are even home made now. Evidently the lady that used to make them is up in years and not doing as much. Overall, the food has a good taste. But I warn you, don't come here if you're ravenous. The portions are quite disappointingly small. Mr. X got the chicken fried chicken, which was not much larger than a couple of chicken tenders. It was of the frozen, pre-breaded chopped meat variety. He said it was just O.K., but not worth the price for the small size. It came with an ice cream scoop sized portion of mashed potatoes and a side of green beans. I got the chopped hamburger steak and mashed potatoes with a side of home made macaroni salad. Again, it was good, but the tiny amount of food served on those comically large plates really enforces the lack of value here. We were finished eating in about 10 minutes. Note to K-K-P if anyone's listening-- mashed potatoes, beans, and macaroni salad are VERY CHEAP... at least give the ILLUSION of value by really piling these extras on. Overall, it was a disappointing experience, and Mr. X and I both left still hungry. We drove down the road to a small stand and each got a 1 Lb. hot dog and a huge bag of fries for a fraction of the cost and wait time. Kac-Ka-Pon, you can do much better by fixing some very simple things, but the food portions must be increased. Larger, chain restaurants do it much more attractively, and that's a shame. Maybe the folks running K-K-P just don't care either way. I notice that this Yelp page is unclaimed, so perhaps it's apathy on their part, and there are few other restaurants willing to take on such a rural area. We have eaten here many times and I keep hoping for some improvement in the food... it seems somewhat cleaner since Covid and the waiter was nice and wore a mask... the taco soup tasted pretty good but the bowl was 1/4 inch deep with soup... really folks... went to dip the taco chips in and that was it... felt like I was scraping the soup off the bottom of the bowl...The mashed potatoes are still instant and awful... beef gravy tasteless... our French fries were undercooked... so therefore, try another place ... This place was awesome. Even though when we walked in it felt like the record scratched... um maybe they ain't never seen a china girl before, just kidding bad joke. Anyways it could have been because it was 7am and I looked like I just rolled outta bed in snow gear. It literally feels like walking into your Paw-Paw's house and I instantly felt like I was on my best behavior. Cutting out my sailor talk, not kicking my feet back on the bench across from me and responding to the single grandmotherly looking waitress with "yes ma'ams" and an excessive amount of "please" and "thank you's". Now let's get down to the good stuff... and when I say good stuff I mean their delicious, meticulously put together breakfasts. OH. MAH. LAWD. This place hit the spot. We got Doug's bowl (a clusterf*ck of everything amazing). Biscuits, sausage gravy, eggs, and homefries all slapped together perfectly. And a western omelet. One of the most beautifully cooked ones I've ever seen. No really, it was so perfect it almost looked fake. Photoshoot fresh if you will. Ya know for you food photographers.... Very no-frills stripped down home cooking type place. Very small menu and limited choices for those with dietary restrictions. That said, a pescetarian, a vegetarian and a gluten-free pescetarian all had filling meals to wrap up a backpacking weekend at Dolly Sods full of freeze dried boil-in-a-bag meals. We were skeptical as we pulled in, but in the end we all left happily stuffed. Almost a 3 star place but what kicks it up to 4 stars is the little stuff that's made in house as opposed to from a can. The pickled beets and eggs, sweet potato casserole, coleslaw, half-wheat/half-white rolls were among those little made in house flourishes that make this a 4 star place. Service was very friendly and helpful. Prices were very reasonable for quality and quantity of the food. Homemade desserts and tasty soft serve ice cream are the icing on the cake. Sure beats the pants off of another Clif bar and powdered gatorade.... read more

We stopped by this place on the way out to Lost River and really enjoyed it. It's a diner-style restaurant with a lot of regulars. That is, when we walked in, it was like someone ripped the needle from the record and everyone stared at us the whole time. We were in a car with California license plates, and people gathered around it outside and asked us where we were from and where we were going. We thought it was really cool! What a tight knit community--and the diner of the tight knit community was truly a family spot where everyone knew each other. The food was home cooking. My wife got a chef salad that was huge. I got chicken fried steak which was really good. Another guest got a grilled chicken breast which was kind of on the tiny side. Speaking of the word side, this place has a lot of side options! Mashed potatoes, beets, potato salad, and baked potato were our favorites. I didn't get to try it, but the fried chicken, which is called Honey Chicken, looked amazing. On the other hand, steaks were kind of unimpressive--saw one on another guy's plate. I'm sure they were tasty, it's just that the meat wasn't that thick. There are like only a few restaurants really close to the b & b we were staying at. This is not cracker barrel, and it doesn't promise to be. It's good food like if you went to your friend's house for dinner. We had the $6.95 spagetti and meatball special with garlic toast and salad. My husband and I dined there yesterday. We absolutely loved the waitress Loraine. She is a total jewel. She was so busy, the only person serving tables and it was packed. She never complained, always took care of anything people needed, even took time to speak to people, had such kindness and caring for the customers. She kept the coffee refilled as needed, and honestly, if they had a waitress of the year award and i was presenting it, she would have gotten it. Traveling through West Virginia looking for a place to have dinner. Looked places nearby and decided to give it a shot. What a gem. They had sit-down service and obviously adhered to best practices of social distancing and personal protective equipment. The food was phenomenal. One of the appetizers we had was Wing Dings and they were as good, if not better, than any we'd ever had. The butterfly shrimp and ribeye were excellent as well. Family restaurant proved to be a gem tucked away in a small West Virginia town. Country charm with down home country food. Seemed to be a local hangout.
