We tried a total of six different rolls, and although they did look decent when we opened the box, every single one of them had something off about it. My sister friend and I stopped in Kai Sushi after shopping at Costco! What a great surprise. The conveyer belt is not only filled with FRESH sushi, but it is always full. My sister got the pickled cucumbers and made me try them....they did not disappoint!!! The vinegar taste was not overbearing and of course was the perfect palette cleanser. I could not stop eating the deep fried crab and shrimp tempura roll. Whew!!! I want one right now! The prices are priced per plate and the highest priced plate was $9.50. The service was great. The cashier/waiter was attentive and kind. This is a one and done for me for Kai Sushi. Definitely not 5 star quality. The quality here has more misses than hits. The black plates and the special orders are why I'm giving them one more star. I would not recommend getting any of the fried stuff like tempura and crab rangoon, they've been sitting out too long. The yellow plates are decent. Red and orange are like eh, you can tell they're not fresh. Service was good. The place was mostly empty when we came for dinner. Prices are expensive for the mediocre quality you receive. You can also order food from the menu, if you wanted something specific (ramen, miso soup, fried rice, etc). Staff has always been helpful and friendly. It's not the best sushi (or Asian food) you'll ever have, but the novelty of the conveyor belt is fun enough. My family and I have been here several times, and it is always a big hit with the kids, but (as with everything lately) prices have gone up and seems portion sizes have decreased somewhat. Tonight was a HUGE disappointment and I will NEVER come back. I was surprised that there was very limited Maki rolls on the conveyer belt on a Saturday evening at 7:30pm. The server told us to write down any rolls we wanted that were not on the belt. We waited over 20 min for our rolls to come out. Also we ordered these mussels that took forever to come out and when they did it was a full order which we said we wanted whatever portion they come on the belt which was 3 pieces. We were served an entire order of 6. I told the server no big deal we will keep it. The owner came over to rectify the situation and she told me just take 3 mussels off the plate and she took the other 3 mussels away. It was so shocking to see this when most establishments would say it's ok we will take it off the bill. To see her take the plate away was embarrassing to be honest. Also the Maki rolls were terrible. The seaweed wrapper was so chewy and rubbery in texture. It tasted off and the rice was so mushy. I spent over $80 for terrible food and service. I included some sushi we had grabbed obviously didn't take pictures of all of them but they were pretty good. Got some appetizers as well, we got lucky because they were still hot. Got some dessert as well, crème brûlée which I don't know why I thought it would be a good idea but I have it a shot. 5/10, not the best. Sushi we ordered was spicy shrimp tempura and shogun roll, because they were running out on the belt. $5 for 5 prices when we ordered. Not too bad, our bill came out to $45 which I don't think was bad considering how much we got to try either having plates of sushi of 3 or 4 pieces so it adds up. 4/5 stars only because I wish the cooks were putting out more variety on the conveyor belt. We sat at the bar and we really enjoyed how the rotary had the appetizers on the belt so we didn't have to order them. Plus the belt is huge so there are many options. The edamame, Gyoza, and shrimp shumai were all very tasty. Our personal favorite sushi was the mango roll, we would definitely grab at least two or three plates when we come back. We also tried their bento boxes, the steak teriyaki was good and the chicken Katsu was some of the best we've ever had. I also highly recommend their honey lemon tea. Asked for a fresh roll and instead, they insisted on taking one that was out on our table to "heat up". Have to compare this sushi bar to other sushi bars, and it fell short. The sushi fell somewhere between Mariano's sushi and gas station sushi- the sushi at Kai Sushi was a disappointment. Good: sashimi, nigiri, and the waitress service. All the employees were friendly and delightful. Neat concept. Not good: the sushi rolls, the hot tea. Conveyor belt sushi wasn't on our bucket list and finding another conveyor belt sushi won't be a budding priority. Some of the draws of sushi include the attention to detail, freshness, crispness, and texture. After the sushi rolls sat in the little container, the rice wanted to stick to the plate which sort of hampered the experience. I felt that the sushi chefs had to keep banging out more plates of sushi to satisfy customers, which altered the quality of the sushi in a harmful way. The sushi rolls were not flavorful, and lacked the textures that we have become accustomed to. Not one "chef's plate" or "daily special" plate came by us during our entire dinner, and it wasn't because some other patron ate them- those plates weren't prepared. I can't believe that "conveyor belt sushi" is a restaurant category on Yelp. One more thing, no matter what, every suburban restaurant has a mandatory 0.5 - 1.0 star deduction compared to a similar restaurant in the city of Chicago. I would say the concept and the layout was really good but the food varied. Most of the sushi was great, but then there were some that were made with older rice (the purple plates or daily specials) and some that weren't tighten enough and fell apart. The rice to fish ratio was decent as was the price. I think between 3 of us, we spent $70, even after getting three desserts. Anything non-sushi on the belt, like the octopus salad or sesame balls I would say skip unless you know they just came of the kitchen. Even though we came here right at opening I could tell some of the stuff making it's way towards us had been sitting there for a while. Also, some of the sushi wasn't really uniformed. The unagi ones (my fav) were inconsistently big or small compared to ones on some of the other plates. That's coming from a semi-picky sushi eater. If you don't care about most of those things, this place would be great for you. If you just want to be full and eat decent sushi than come here. This place is great! If you're looking for rotary sushi this is your spot. I've been here a few times and everything has always be very fresh and delicious. If you don't see something you want on the rotary belt, you can check out their menu and your server will be able to have it made for you! The service has always been wonderful here too. I've always been greeted warmly by the hostess, and they also have you sanitize your hands before sitting down which I also think is great.
