We walked in to find the restaurant nearly empty--just my friend and I in a space that could seat around 40. That's usually not a red flag for me but it made the underwhelming meal stand out even more. We ordered the #7 Hamachi Kama (grilled yellowtail collar), which came with rice and salad. The fish didn't taste fresh and had an odd texture--not what I've come to expect from this dish. The rice had a strange aftertaste, and the salad dressing was more like watered-down mayonnaise than anything appetizing. Next came the shrimp and veggie tempura platter. First time dining with family for dinner. We had a good time and were comfortable. It felt we were at someone's home eating home cooked meal. The atmosphere was relaxed and quiet like a mom and pop. Very local feel. So if you are looking for a fancy or upbeat sushi restaurant, this is not for you. Portion size was good. We were filled up and had some left to-go. Home-cooked flavors. Fish was fresh. We ordered tempura, lion king, pork katsu, sushi steak, French kiss, sake nigiri, thai tea. Service met our needs.. We were there until closing and the lady even offered to take our pictures in the middle of cleaning up and told us not to feel rushed to leave. Friendly staff that really cares but the sushi is just not good. The sushi rolls have tiny pieces of fish and don't look as fresh as they should. The rolls are also packed with rice, even when I asked for light rice. It's a casual to-go kind of spot and maybe that's who they're catering to, but it's not real sushi people. read more

I went to Kaigan Sushi as I was in the mood for a Dragon Roll and it was close by. It's a cute little restaurant, the staff and chefs were very nice. The Dragon Roll was flavorful. What I noticed however was that the avocado was over ripe, it was brown. That was my only issue. I wasn't very hungry, so I didn't order anything else. When a place is good, I'll continue to eat there and when a place is bad, I won't go again, but once in a blue moon, a place comes along that is so vile, so disgusting I feel compelled to leave a review. Starting from the beginning, our waitress had earphones on and was talking to a friend on the phone while trying to help us, not a great start, but not a dealbreaker. Then she brought my daughter a plate, covered in dust and dried oil, which is typically a sign of a plate that sitting near a deep fryer and has not been washed for quite some time, at this point, I wanted to walk out but the order was already in and it felt too late. we were the only ones in the restaurant and somehow the food still was coming out one by one and my family and I had to eat separately. Every corner that can exist was cut. they're using the wrong rice. The fish is subpar the seaweed wrap is stale, and the chicken is rubbery and hard to chew. Worst was the uni which tasted like chemicals a lot of what we ate felt expired and yet instead of doing the right thing, they are serving it to people who make the mistake of eating here. I honestly don't see how they are in business and wouldn't be surprised if I found out they were having troubles. This restaurant is beyond redemption and should be shut down. read more

This sushi place is my go to spot. I love all of their food. I always get salmon sashimi and a giants roll. Unagi is delicious! The salad is always yummy and the queens roll is tasty. They always know my order by heart whenever I call as they remembered my number now. I've tried the other sushi place in Benicia and I think the portion size for sashimi and the rolls are smaller then the one at Kaigan. read more

The waitress did not smile or interact and did not have any suggestions. This intimate restaurant was a great surprise to us. The service and charm were fantastic and the selection of dishes a little overwhelming but our wonderful waitress had some great suggestions. I would pay higher prices for great quality sushi any day. There are times where you know you have to give a second try a restaurant that you've placed on the "Never Agin" list.. Kaigan was in that list. And they didn't fail. Being surrounded by good Sushi restaurants- they fair well.. Nothing on their list was too Amazing to my pallet , nor was it memorable. I had a couple of rolls that delivered consistency in their freshness. However, it seems lacking in zest.. The imitation crab, the bright pink ginger didn't add to the flavor, but took away from it..
