It was our first time at Matsuri, and honestly, we almost thought it was too good to be true. The photos on here looked great and the prices were super reasonable, so we had to try it for ourselves. We were happily proven wrong. The service was excellent, everyone was attentive, kind, and made us feel welcome from the start. The food was delicious, and our favorites were the Pepperfin with hamachi and the teriyaki salmon. Both were fresh, flavorful, and really well done. We're already planning to come back to try more of the menu. Matsuri has been in Vallejo for years and we genuinely wish we had been coming here sooner. read more

I rarely leave negative reviews, but our experience here was unacceptable. While dining with our 9-month-old baby, a man who appeared to be a friend of the owner became irritated by normal baby noises, turned around, and told my infant to "shut the f*** up." As a parent, I was shocked and upset. I immediately brought the situation to the owner's attention, expecting him to address the behavior or at least show some concern. Instead, he laughed and sarcastically asked if he should call the police. There was no apology, no attempt to handle the situation professionally, and no concern for the fact that a customer had just verbally attacked a baby. What made the situation even more disturbing was that another couple nearby overheard everything and complained to the server, questioning why that man was still being allowed to remain and receive service after speaking to a child that way. Even other customers recognized how inappropriate the behavior was. I understand that not everyone enjoys being around children, but no parent should be treated this way, and no business owner should laugh off behavior like this. A restaurant's response to unacceptable conduct says a lot about its values, and this experience made it clear that customer respect is not a priority here. Food was good. Ordered pick up through DoorDash 4/26/26 Sunday around 5:14 PM. Service is where they're lacking unfortunately. First, we placed an order 20 minutes ago and it had a 24 min ready time. When we arrived to pick up, the woman server with dyed hair and Adidas pants said, "oh we just got it I few minutes ago, it'll be 20 minutes more". Yet half of our order was sitting on the counter already. We decided oh since it's a long wait maybe we can just eat in. So we walked back inside 3 minutes later and asked if we could just dine in instead, but the second lady server, wearing black-rimmed glasses and black long hair in a pony tail just smiled "no, sorry we can't." I thought it was weird as I looked around it was over 60% empty. Is it that inconvenient to let your customers sit in? The third woman server was nice and preparing orders for pick up and gave a better estimate of when the items would be ready though. So, I had been craving sushi for the past week and told my wife we should eat here after she got off work (spoiler: I should've chosen somewhere else) It wasn't terribly busy (around 6 tables were occupied with a few people at the bar) and two tables were packing their food. We walked in, and it took sometime for someone to even acknowledge us. A staff member said, "Hi..." and nothing else. We stood awkwardly for 5 minutes before that same person asked how many for the table as she grabbed menus. We sat for a few minutes and we received water and browsed the menu before putting them to the side after we decided what we wanted. Time passed (enough for the remaining tables to begin leaving) and a waitress had taken the order for another table. The person who sat us seemed to be serving the two tables beside us, but continued to ignore us. Back turned to where we couldn't get their attention, or actively avoiding eye contact. No communication, no acknowledgement--just nothing. After around 15 minutes of nothing (just sitting and waiting as they tended to everyone else around us)--we decided to leave. The service here used to be "eh", but now it just seems terrible. In the future (if I ever choose to return) it'll be when I'm desperate to eat sushi and have nothing planned for the day/ evening so I can wait for someone show an ounce of hospitality. There was enough staff and weren't busy, so--what happened? It wouldn't have been as bad if someone at least said, "I'll be with you in just a moment", but instead we were waiting in limbo for a "what would you like to order?" That never came. read more

Matsuri's is a good place for a sit down lunch /dinner for the family. We celebrated a birthday here and was happy with the service and food. I ordered the Shrimp Tempura dinner. It came with a cup of Miso soup and a salad. I had plenty of Shrimp and vegetable tempura enough to take home and we shared an M&M roll. The family all got Bento boxes and rolls and they were all satisfied. The place is nice with a sushi bar in a central place of the restaurant and on the wall, it has a TV. The Servers are friendly and attentive. The food came pretty quick and it was nice and hot. The food was moderately priced but worth it. read more

*** Vegetarian Review *** A 3-star vegetarian review isn't unusual for a Japanese restaurant. Not a lot of options so the available options better jump off the plate. There are a few dishes that could make you come here, so let's get into it. Futo Maki ($8.95, Grade B-) Oshinko (lightly pickled vegetables), kanpyo (dried gourd shavings), kappa (cucumber), inari (sweet tofu skin), tamago (egg), red ginger, and sesame seed. I didn't like the carrot at all - had an extremely overpowering flavor and tone. But after I removed those from the rolls, I did enjoy this. It paired very well with the agedashi (made vegetarian) appetizer I ordered as my main meal. Agedashi ($5.95, Grade A+) Deep fried tofu without the bonito flakes. Also requested no seaweed and the dipping sauce on the sauce. The way they prepare the tofu is really great. Probably a firm tofu and lightly battered and fried, not greasy. Comes with 6 square pieces. As noted above, eating the futo maki together was a great compliment. You get the texture from the fried tofu with the pickled tones of the futo roll. Recommend doing this if you come here. Inari Nigiri ($5.95, Grade D) - Sweet tofu wrap with sushi rice. This is my go-to for Japanese restaurants because it usually fills me up when there are not a lot of options. This unfortunately was not good at all. The tofu pouch wasn't remotely sweet and it was actually leathery and tough. The sushi rice was hard so I basically removed it and used the tofu pouch with my fried tofu from the agedashi. Asian fries ($8.95, Grade A+) Fried taro, sweet potato served with garlic aioli sauce. Lightly battered and .... I'll just say probably good for you! Let's call these a healthy snack. Bento Box - both lunch and dinner. Lunch is 11:30a-2p. You can choose between a 2 or 3 item bento. Dinner is 4:30p-close and you need to choose 3 items. On a different trip, I ordered the veggie tempura, veggie gyoza, and wakame dinner bento box. - Veggie tempura. I like the veggie tempura better at Yo Sushi. This is a little heavier on the oily side. That said, I ate it all, but i wouldn't order this separately as an appetizer. - Veggie gyoza. I love the fact they have this as an option. I can't tell if it is house made, but it was heavy on the salt. Sidenote - since it's rare I get to have a veggie gyoza, on a separate trip, I ordered it again and the saltiness level was the same. - Wakame. The portion sizes in the bento box is very generous. This actually helped balance the other items in my bento. Bottom line. Clean environment. They keep the front door open so fresh air is constantly being introduced. No strong fish smells. Staff is super friendly and attentive. They have vegetarian options so you're not just stuck with a boring cucumber roll. Sidenote - took my Japanese relatives that were visiting from out of town here for dinner. They ordered the mackerel and said "this was the best mackerel I've ever had." read more

The food is amazing here. Whether you're a seafood person or somebody who just wants a dish with rice like chicken teriyaki it is the place to be. The service is on point and quick. Also if you can make it early 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. you can get lunch before a more discounted price. The bento boxes are very popular. But when I come here I like to spoil myself. Wow! It's been at least a decade, probably a decade and a half, since I've been here, but I remember back when they opened! This spot was my and my mom's favorite for sushi. Back in the day, she and I could pack away $100 worth of sushi just the two of us, and that was probably 25 years ago! Yes, Matsuri has been around that long! This past week, she and I meet for dinner, along with my husband. My mom ordered her go-tos: ika sansai (squid salad) and a Lion King. When I was a kid, I thought this restaurant invented the Lion King lol! It's always been a good roll. I don't remember the names of the two rolls I got... Maybe Lily Belle and Tsunami? That sounds about right. The Lily Belle was similar to a 49er roll, and I really enjoyed it. The Tsunami was a spicy roll and it was just ok. My husband chose a bento box and ate the whole thing. We were pleased with our meal. However, maybe my palate has matured since I was a teenager, but overall I thought the sushi was just "fine." I'd probably have to return and give some other rolls a try. Their menu is extensive, so I wish they had pictures to accompany it. We wanted to love this place, but were slightly disappointed. The extensive menu had it all and then some. Started out with hiyayako - a simple cold tofu dish - it was served warm and the pieces were cut strange and topped with bonito strands and nori. The tofu was a firm type not a silken and served warm not iced. Our second dish was a special sushi roll, the Matsuri, it was bland and lacked any special taste - very disappointing for a signature roll. For our main dish we both ordered the special chirashi. The sushi rice was hard, lacked any "su" and they substituted tobiko eggs for the original salmon roe in the rice - the main reason we ordered this dish. The assortment of fish covering the bowl was also disappointing - small pieces, trhe cheaper cuts of fish, and just no artistry in the making of this dish. We will not make this a destination next time, but just a close by p[lace to eat. Service was also very slow, plenty of people, but we had to wave them all down for service to our table. read more

Our go-to place for sushi. My sons order 2 sushi rolls and I ordered the shrimp tempura (big plate of shrimp and vegetable....too much for me so I ended up giving my sons most of the vegetables). Repetitive bad service. I used to love coming here for the food but the staff are fixated on treating specifics individuals better than the rest. It changes the whole experience when you ask your waiter for something and they proceed to mingle with customers sitting at the bar to later pass on the task to someone else. I came to Matsuri for dinner on a Sunday night with my fiancé, and I have to say, this place is surprisingly really, really good! I'm so glad we have a sushi spot like this in Vallejo. We started with the Warriors Roll and the Go Giants Roll, and both were made really well--delicious and satisfying. We also ordered the 18-piece sashimi, which was incredibly fresh and buttery. For nigiri, we had escolar, also known as butterfish, which is one of my favorite types of fish (besides o-toro). The miso soup was pretty standard, and the grilled yaki ika was perfectly done--I'm always a fan of grilled squid, and this didn't disappoint. Even though the restaurant was busy, the service was great, and the sushi chef was super friendly. Bulgogi not recommended - it's a Japanese restaurant after all. Portion sizes are good for the price. To me, this is just your standard Japanese restaurant - good, but nothing over the top. There isn't anything that really sticks out for me. I would recommend this restaurant IF you're close by wanting Japanese food, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here. I love this place! I used to always order online for pickup, but if you call it in you can usually pick up your order faster. Parking lot is a little sketchy but there's security patrolling, so it's not too bad. Plenty of seating when eating in, including a bar. We were seated instantly, but it took about 30 minutes for the waitress to acknowledge us and take our order. I ordered the 6 piece raw oysters, a spider roll, and 2 bento boxes for my son and I. All was delicious. I really liked the fried oysters. Good quality sushi and sashimi. But I have one small complaint -- the oysters. Super small and wasn't worth the price. Went here with my family and booked a reservation prior. Long story short, the food took an hour to come out. After a significant amount of time, when asked about the wait, the waitress told us that business was slow, so the food would come out shortly. Essentially, they had waited for the entire restaurant to pretty much clear out before they started to bring us any of our dishes. We watched as many parties who came in after us left before we even were served a single dish. When asked if there was anything the restaurant could do for us because the service was so upsetting, the owner/manager/person in charge refused. He also refused to come over and speak to any of us. There was no accountability, nor was there an apology from him. He treated the waitress as his middle man and did not have the courage to come over and speak to our party, despite us requesting. This was a pretty upsetting experience. I love my city and we try to support our local businesses, but this was disappointing. It's one thing to have bad service, it's another to not have the desire to make things right in order to rectify a situation. read more

Ever since my husband and I discovered this place in Vallejo, we wouldn't get sushi anywhere else. Food - They have a great variety of rolls. We've tried the Dragonfly, Flaming Dragon, and Alaska roll. I absolutely loved the Flaming Dragon roll - super flavorful with tasty fish. The Alaska roll - pretty much a salmon avocado roll is also very simple and tasty. Service - We've ate inside the restaurant and have ordered take-out. Both instances we've had great service. Our waitress was friendly and very attentive, quick to get to us, check on us, and give us our bill. No issues with service. Ambiance - Located in a pretty chill-like plaza. It kind of seems like this place should be in a much more crowded area, but I'm glad it kind of isn't because then it would get packed ALL THE TIME. This place is legit a hidden gem in Vallejo. Lord. I hate to write this after 20 years of either getting take out or getting eat in food from Matsuri, but JEEEZ this place was bad tonight. Did door dash. In photos? There are at least 8-10 slices of each sushi roll. Tonight, for about 60 bucks, we received 15 slices of three rolls to the tune of 60 bucks. HORRIBLE presentation, and sloppy rolls. Most had fallen apart. Honestly? We may never go back to the place and go searching for another Japanese sushi spot. Matsuri used to be gold standard. Tonight? We tossed most of the 15 out and ended up making steamed veg instead. Just..what in the all what? Did they change hands again? Absolutely not the moneys worth and chintzy amounts of sushi. Five slices is now considered a sushi roll? I mean, we know in this idiot's americuh things are expensive, but heck, don't charge us full price for a lunch time type amount. Normally, three rolls do it for the two of us! This was pathetic, and frankly, very poorly constructed. One of the rolls was just a sloppy mess. ICK! Come on Matsuri!
