Uber friendly family owned and operated Filipino Restaurant in quaint Trenton, Illinois. Kain Tayo means "Let's Eat!", and they make sure you don't go away hungry. It's squeaky clean and has a nice inviting atmosphere in an old building on the main street in Trenton. Expect Randy, one of the owners, to greet you and his Mom to bring the food to your table. I confessed to Randy that I wasn't familiar with Filipino food, so to just bring me something as a newbie to their cuisine. He brought the Adobo Chicken, which is chicken braised in garlic, vinegar, soy sauce, peppercorn and bay leaves along with steamed rice and Lumpiang. The chicken was a very generous portion and silly me, I asked for a knife. I didn't need one as it was as tender as could be. My only wish was that it came with something green, a veggie or something, but there were lots of other dishes that had some green, so it was obviously just the recipe. The rice was also a generous portion and done perfectly. The Lumpiang were very tasty and the chili dipping sauce accented them nicely. While not crowded on a Tuesday at lunchtime, Randy told me they often sell out on weekends, so plan accordingly. This is the kind of place where you go when you want to try something different, but either don't know what, or are afraid to venture out. But do give them a try, and I think you'll go back. I can't even begin to explain the incredibly random circumstances that led us to find this incredibly small, incredibly local gem! In what is my first official Filipino experience, we made the pilgrimage from St. Louis proper roughly 45 minutes east to a small town in Illinois. What is it worth the drive? YES A family run business, you are greeted with smiles from every member of the staff as soon as you walk in. The chef is hard at work in the back, so the younger staff run back-and-forth asking how you're doing and what you need. We were fortunate enough to go with are very good Filipino friends, so we followed their lead when it came to ordering. It felt like we got one of everything on the menu, and not a single dish disappointed! From smoked pork belly, to garlic fried rice, to bigol, to glass noodles, to egg rolls - I should have worn my stretchy pants to eat it all. And THEN came the massive dessert! After a year of not eating out due to COVID, my first in restaurant meal was at Kain Tayo in Trenton, IL. While it was 40 minutes from St Louis City, the drive was worth it! My Filipino wife and I give Kain Tayo 5 Stars and we are very picky! The Staff is sweet and hospitable and the food is authentic and cooked to order. Wonderful multigenerational family restaurant. Kain Tayo is mere 7 miles outside of Lebanon on old RTE 50. Food is made to order by the owner/chef. She happily modifies a meal according to one's wishes. My friend ordered Sisig which is usually served spicy hot. She requested a milder version which was no problem. I had the crispy Kare-Kare --- wonderful. Every one there was lovely. We tried the Pilipino juice which tastes like lemon with a lime lingering taste. We liked that, too. We will definitely be back. I can't say that this place is a bad version of authentic Filipino cuisine. But, I also can't say is it the best or even good. Two would have to be for now. I have visited this place twice. Once with colleagues from work and another just to try out on my own. At the first visit was on a Saturday which, am told, is normally their busiest. So a few of us agreed to venture out a good distance to a hole in a wall eatery located in a country farming community called Trenton. Having lived in the Philippines and raised by Filipino family, I know a thing or two about the native food. This place does its best to resemble the culture with the lighting, pictures, small market stand and bed sheet as curtain to separate the kitchen to the dining room. I am not sure it is a bed sheet but truly exhibit the traditional way of separating rooms with the use of curtains. LOL! But, let us get on with the food. I was delighted by the selection on the special of the day. There are 4 specials to select along with the regular menu items. I opted for the lechon kawali which is not one of the specials. I remember this dish back in the old country and had to see if this place could replicate. Sadly to say I was disappointed! It was way over cooked to a point where it was just hard to bite in to. And the portion for the asking price was less than deserving. The rice was okay and dipping sauce was excellent, however. I should have ordered the BBQ specials as my colleagues enjoyed their meals and was able to sample from their plate. I agree that the specials are worth the asking price. Still steep in price! I do have to say, however, that the presentation definitely was colorful. The downside to the meal is that every drink will cost you. They do not serve water free as most places would but rather, you have to buy the bottled. Yes, they serve bottle water and bottle sodas. Well at least the utensils were not plastic ware! The other complaint I have is to the length of time waiting for the meal. We literally waited near 30 minutes or maybe over. It was long! Thank God we did not have to be back to work! LOL! Now this event was several weeks ago and I had the craving for Filipino food. Again, I decide to try this place but on my own this time. It was during the weekday and being off work, I drove the distance. May I say that weekend is way different than weekday specials. I opted for the kare kare. Wrong choice!. This did not resemble, at all, the island cuisine back home. This was over a month ago so am trying to recall the event. My recollection was that it was not good. I could have done the dish much better. I do, however, like the dessert after the meal. It is called halo halo. It was steep in price but worth it cause I enjoyed the flavor. Plus, where else can you get this dessert? I mean! Over all, beside the dessert, this place has the potential but lack in many things that would gain exceptional status.
