For being literally one of the few sushi spots in the boonies of newly-developed Chula Vista/Otay Ranch Area, sure this place is great! Have I had better, you bet your a** I have. Don't get me wrong, the prices are inexpensive and the sushi is good. It's a whole lot better than Sushiya, Bento & Noodles or whatever else is nearby. I'd definitely come here again, but it wouldn't be the first place I'd recommend in all of San Diego for sushi. I've had this place multiple times with my sisters and family, as they live in nearby neighborhoods. I've had a handful of their rolls, but the best thing on their menu is their Chirashi Bowl. It hasn't let me down yet and the fish was pretty tasty. Now, I took away one star because it isn't mind blowing sushi. They lost another star because my most recent visit, which was for a takeout order. I called at around 3 PM (a time I must note because literally they were NOT BUSY) and placed my NON-Complicated order that consisted of 2 rolls, a chirashi bowl, and a hand roll. Again, not a complicated order. The staff member on the phone repeated my exact order and gave me my total. I then repeated the total back to her and she, which she confirmed and told me it would be ready in 20-25 minutes. I arrive at Kaiyo, lets say closer to 25-30 minutes ready to pick up the food. I walk into basically an empty restaurant - literally, only a father a son dining at a corner table of the restaurant. I give the hostess/staff my name and let them know I'm here for pick-up. She repeats my name and gives me a completely different total. I ask to repeat the order, which was correct, but the total was completely off by almost $15. I informed them that, that was not the total I was given, which was met by a dirty look. Not wanting to push further, I said "oh well" and proceeded to give her my card to pay. She walked behind the counter toward the sushi chefs and had a brief conversation. She walked back and I was told that it would be another 10 minutes for my order. In my head I'm thinking "40 minutes?! What were you guys doing since I called in my order." (I didn't say it out loud, but I wanted to) I proceeded to stand and wait. When I finally got my order, I was that hangry that I just hurried back to my sister's house because there were other people also waiting for their food. Low and behold, the order was wrong. Located as the same complex as in n out and Denny's! Kaiyo sushi has been a place I've been meaning to try out.. and I'm glad I finally did :) a clean place with very inexpensive and quality sushi! Their salmon teriyaki was really tasty too. I had the yum yum roll, which I do recommend. It has a mango salsa topped on it and it gives a really different taste most sushi places don't have. They give generous amounts of sauces, wasabi, and ginger if asked. The workers are very friendly and they have a wide variety of Japanese dishes to choose from. Visiting from Arizona and decided to stop by this place (it's right next to a boba shop), definitely did not disappoint! Fast service, we ordered 6 hand rolls & some gyoza and it was ready in FIVE minutes! Made them right in fromt of us. The guy preparing the rolls was wearing gloves & a mask. He asked where we were coming from and was very pleasant to talk to. As for the food itself - I would say the price is definitely reasonable considering the high quality of the seafood. The eel is some of the best I've had, not too salty! We also got spicy scallops and california roll. It wasn't spicy, but it had great flavor. Very fresh scallops, not chewy, they melt in your mouth! I don't usually write reviews, but my experience today at Kaiyo Sushi was just so bad that I had to write this. I'll be explaining why my rating is so low, but keep in mind that everything written here was my own experience and observations during this time. This might be a bit long so head on down to the last paragraph for a TL;DR. I came by the restaurant just shy of 6 PM and ordered 2 California Rolls, Dragon Roll, Salmon Kama (Collar), and 2 orders of "Kaiyo Special". The total came out to be a touch over $54, average price, nothing special to talk about. The wait time tho, that was something to talk about. 15 minutes into waiting, I was told that it would only be 10 more minutes. 10 minutes later, nothing. The total wait time for me to place my order to receiving it was 32 minutes. I even had a lady approach me to ask me what I ordered to wait so long, because she was sitting in her car and happened to see me order, wait, pace around, come up to the counter a couple times, and go back to waiting. After I received my food, I wasn't too happy, but said my thank yous and left. Checking my order in the car, the 2 Kaiyo Specials turned into two Special Kaiyo Rolls and the Salmon Kama wasn't a real collar as it had a chunk of filet attached to it and the good half of the collar was missing. (It also looked deep fried) I brought the food back, albit a bit angrily, and told them that they got my order wrong. I told them that I didn't want the Kama anymore as it wasn't what I wanted and that I ordered "2 Kaiyo Specials" (In quotes because that was the wording I used to order) and I got these rolls instead. They kept trying to convince me that I was the one who ordered wrong because I didn't specify that it was a bento and there were 2 things on the menu with the same name. There was not. There was one "Kaiyo Special" under the Bento category and one "Special Kaiyo Roll" under the Kaiyo Favorite Roll category. Clearly not the same name. They begrudgingly took it back and charged me an additional $1.25 for the price difference. I don't mind paying the difference, but it would have been nice to have the difference be comped for the trouble. The waitress told me that it's going to take another 15 minutes to get the 2 Kaiyo Special BENTOS out and I shockingly said "15 MINUTES?!" to which her reply was a very rude, "Well they ARE fixing your order." Like it wasn't their fault the the order was incorrect. To their benefit, the Kaiyo Specials came out a couple minutes faster than estimated. I ended up leaving the parking lot at around 6:54 PM. With the customer service and ordering experience out of the way, the food itself wasn't bad, with the exception of what looks to be an iceberg lettuce and tomato salad with ginger miso dressing that came with the special. Maybe a 3.5/5. It wasn't great for the price, but it was acceptable. The quality of fish was a grade higher than what you'd see in AYCE sushi restaurants; however the nigiri was not formed well. The rice fell apart when picked up with chopsticks and the fish did not stick to the rice well. I would give the roll wrapping an average rating. It wasn't as firmly wrapped as I would like as a couple of them fell apart as well, but most kept its shape. The eel sauce they used for the dragon roll was pretty good tho. Overall, I would go back to the restaurant if it was solely based on price, quality, and distance from my residence; however, with the horrid experience with the customer service and the time to receive the food, I will not be returning to this establishment. For those reading this review and still would like to eat here, my advice would be to call in your order ahead of time and be very specific with what you want, and have them repeat the order back to you so you don't have a surprice if you don't happen to check what is in your bag before you get home. read more

Super psyched that there's another sushi spot in the area other than Sushiya lol. Kaiyo's rolls are pretty decent, not the best, but tasty nonetheless. The prices are verrry reasonable, plus they had a grand opening special: buy 2 rolls, get the 3rd for free! But...that's over now :( Anyway, their rolls are big, especially the Spicy Albacore! It was a struggle to fit one whole piece in my mouth lol. I also tried the Dragon, Crunch, and Rainbow rolls and my mom also ordered the shrimp yakisoba. I'm used to crunch rolls having lots of tempura crunch on it but this one just had a really light layer. We got all this to-go and I should also mention that they give a GIANT mound of ginger haha it was literally nearly the size of my fist. I love eating ginger with sushi so I was pleasantly surprised to find so much in my to-go container. Not sure if they provide the same amount if you dine in. I would like to give this place five stars but I'm subtracting two stars for the subpar service we received from the blond waitress that greeted us. Actually, she didn't greet us. She didn't look very happy to be there either. When my family and I walked in the waitress didn't say hello, only said "How many?" After seating us she handed us some menus and asked what we wanted to drink. She came back with our drinks and placed them on the table without a word. After a few minutes she came back and asked us for our orders. My husband handed her the sushi order form and my daughter ordered a chicken yakisoba. After several minutes the sushi arrived. The bus boy placed them on our table and walked away. There was no wasabi or ginger included with our sushi so I waited until I could get the waitress' attention. She noticed we weren't eating and asked if everything was ok. I asked for the wasabi and ginger. She came back and placed them on our table. At this point my daughter's meal still hadn't arrived so everyone just waited. We didn't want to start eating without her. Our waitress was in the back and we didn't see her for several minutes. We also didn't hear anyone cooking in the back. When she finally emerged we told her we were still waiting on the yakisoba. Without a word she went to the kitchen, peaked in the back, and then she went to the register to punch in a few keys. She never put our order in! Finally, it's shift change. Another waitress comes in and the first waitress leaves without so much as an apology for forgetting to put my daughter's order in. So after maybe twenty minutes of waiting for her noodles, the new waitress brings my daughter her order. It was beef yakisoba! I told the waitress it was supposed to be chicken. I guess when the first waitress finally put our order in she put it in for the wrong thing. The new waitress was apologetic. I told her we were tired of waiting and my daughter will just eat the beef. The waitress offered to make the chicken yakisoba to go but we told her it was ok. If that first waitress wasn't such a ditz I would have given this place five stars. The prices are reasonable and the sushi was delicious and fresh. We will try this place again and hopefully that first waitress isn't working when we come back. read more
