Teriyaki Chicken Roll (2 rolls)
Amy Y.

There was a special on Uber....buy 1 get one free....so why the heck not...let's get lunch! Got 2 rolls and with the buy one get one turned into 4 rolls.... Quality was okay. Rice was slightly softer than preferred and the salmon could probably be fresher. The color of the wasabi seemed overly processed...think light lime green and really soft and pasty. It was okay....

Before heading in to No Frills, I needed to grab some takeout for dinner on a Saturday. I did a search on my Uber Eats app. I noticed that Kaiyo Sushi had a BOGO deal on its salmon family combo. Perfect! Kaiyo Sushi is in the same plaza as No Frills. I also got the chicken teriyaki bento box. I got details that my order would be ready for pickup in twenty minutes. It was enough time for me to grab a few items from No Frills before picking up my food. This plaza is rather dead where Kaiyo Sushi is. The only other business close by that was humming a bit was Dollarama. I got a prime parking spot and walked in to the eatery. I liked the neon lights in the place. It's a cute place to dine in. I spoke to a woman behind the counter. I indicated that I had an Uber Eats order and showed her my confirmation number. I got two bags of food. I thanked her and left with my goodies. I got home to eat. I went ahead with my chicken teriyaki bento box. It came with miso soup and salad. The former had tofu cubes and seaweed. The miso broth was excellent. The salad was fresh. I loved everything about it, including the miso dressing. The chicken teriyaki was delicious. I got a lot of chicken teriyaki that had sesame seeds sprinkled over it. The chicken was tender and yummy. There was enough sauce to enjoy with the steamed rice. The sauce was mildly sweet, which I liked. The portion was equally as generous as the chicken. The rice was great. The bento box came with two veggie spring rolls and three pieces of a California roll. They were delicious. The spring rolls were crunchy with a good amount of veggies stuffed in them. I loved the California roll. It's done well here. I liked my bento box more than the salmon family combo. I loved the sashimi and salmon pieces with sushi rice. The salmon was fresh and yummy. I didn't like the salmon roll. It had what tasted like dry grains of nothing mixed in with a hint of salmon flavour. It was disappointing and gross. Huge pass. I would have been happy with the recognizable salmon alone. I'm so glad that I ordered the bento box. If I had decided on whether I liked this place based on the salmon family combo only, I would have said that it was okay. The bento box was fabulous that I'd return to get this box alone. (116)

KAIYO SUSHI . . can't believe there was another hidden gem in Richmond Hill that I didn't know about until now! Kaiyo Sushi is so fresh and their sashimi pieces are thick! I especially love the salmon sashimi and how it melts in your mouth. Nigiri pieces are great as well - the fish covers the entire piece of rice making the proportion between fish and rice perfect. Nothing special about the rolls but they were tasty as well. If you want fresh sushi that won't break the back definitely give them a try! . . 80pcs Assorted Sashimi, Sushi and Rolls ($62)

Came here with some friends for the omakase special meal…read more Such a lovely overall standard omakase experience and meal. The highlight for me was probably the set of four starter appetizers, they were flavourful, delicately prepared and perfect way to start the meal. I liked the slightly pickled dish with cucumbers the best. We also had sushi prepared with fresh seafood. The rice was probably my favorite compared to other places I've been. It was perfectly seasoned rice, warm and cooked to have just the right texture, not overcooked and not undercooked. The rice held up well when picked up by hand and complemented the flavours of the fish. Finished the meal with a matcha flavored pudding flan type dessert which had deep matcha flavours. If you're a fan of matcha, you'd probably enjoy it too. All in all, the meal was enjoyable, the torched tuna sushi was probably my favorite sushi of the set and my least favorite was the egg/eel, I was expecting a sweet egg at the end so it unexpected.

Taki is a fine dining Japanese restaurant located in the busy commerical areas of Richmond Hill…read more We recently had lunch here for a special occasion. The restaurant is super quiet and they offer great quality of food with great service, and the price is expensive if you choose to order sukiyaki set (expect $80+ per person). You can choose between sushi sets at different price level or sukiyaki from the menu. This suits the need of our group given some people prefer sushi but some couldn't eat raw food. They also offer a couple of limited appetizer dishes such as tempuras and unagi don. If you booked the sukiyaki table and want to order sushi, you need to call them in advance to notify which sushi sets you want. We tried the sashimi and sushi courses at $55, which included miso soup, 5 pieces of sashimi, 8 pieces of sushi (squid, toros, salmon, scallop etc.), handroll and matcha or black sesame icecream at your choice. The sushi is smaller than average, suitable for small eaters. The course is totally worth the money. I love every piece of sashimi and my favourite sushi include the scallop and the squid. Everything was super fresh. The dessert was also having the perfect sweetness level for me. In addition, we also tried the sukiyaki for two ($110), which includes mushrooms, cabbages, great quality of Angus beef, yummy tofu and udon. Again, all the material was with great quality and super fresh. I especially liked the sweet sukiyaki soup, the tofu and the udon. We also ordered some shareable dishes including chawanmushi, unagi don and cod. Cod was cooked to perfect (soft and flavourful), and unagi don had quite decent portion. It would be better if the unagi could be softer from my personal opinion. Chawanmushi was mediocre. Overall, I strongly recommend this restaurant to fan of Japanese cuisine. It meets different people's needs by offering both cooked and raw food options, and the sushi set definitely has great value for money.

Ordered tempura vegetables and shrimp with 6 pieces total was only around $9. This tempura tasted truly delicious compared to other pricier restaurants! The whole staff greeted us the moment we came in with smile and felt their kindness/patience while we were looking through the menu. They were very accommodating with changing spicy salmon roll to dynamite roll in the dinner sushi sets for me since I don't eat spicy food. Other restaurants would always charge extra regardless if the price was the same or cheaper. The rice ratio for the rolls was PERFECT! Definitely the best one I've seen by far. I would love to try their signature rolls next time to see if they're the same. I would come here again for lunch and check them out. -1 star because: The sushi to rice ratio is a little too much so I had to take some off unfortunately. Also the salad that comes with the sets was bland, lettuce and 3 strings of beets.

For a lunch bento box around ~$17-18 it comes with a roll, tempura, salad, miso soup, rice and salmon teriyaki, I thought that the food quality was amazing. The rolls were not just basic rolls, they were packed with flavour, texture (tempura bits) and had an excellent rice-meat ratio. The salmon terriyaki portion was amazing. Service was a little on the slow side, the the food definitely made up for it. I'm looking forward to trying out other sushi rolls & menu items as their menu is quite extensive! Will definitely be coming back in the near future. If you're looking for a good place to stop by for quick sushi

The service is incredible here, and the vibe is cool-chic. Just loving the atmosphere here…read more As for the food, don't expect it to be a "traditional Izakaya" here, but that's not a bad thing. They do the "traditional" dishes with a twist / fusion. For example, the black cod is usually feel heavy with the miso based sauce, but they added some acidity to the sauce and they made the black cod taste rich and light (not to mention the black cod was perfectly cooked); traditionally the Brussels Sprouts would be finished by tossing balsamic vinegar over it. Sometimes that would still feel heavy. Instead, they tossed it with strawberry vinaigrette. So the acidity is very light and not too sweet. We finished our meal with the Yokai Signature Maki. Yes, they SHOULD be proud of this Maki enough to put their name on it. They hit it on the nail with the taste profile. I have a zero tolerance with spiciness, so they put the spicy mayo on the side, and I encouraged my wife to dip the Maki with it. She confirmed my suspicion that the spicy mayo took the maki to another level. We definitely will come to try other dishes. Edit: they comped us a slice of Matcha Cheesecake. While it is still not my cup of tea, but I was very impressed with how good it taste. My "dislike" is with cheesecakes because they feel heavy. Though it is still on the heavy side for me, but as soon as I spoon in a bit of the strawberry sauce, it just lightened up the whole thing. They have successfully amazed me with how well they play with taste.

They also had optional upgrades for uni or Japanese melon, which I think was like $35 for uni and $27 for one melon slice. We didn't end up doing that but we were super full from lunch and it was a pretty good deal for omakase. Service was amazing, super comfortable. The appetizer was interesting, the first sushi course, Engawa was my least favorite! Never had such weird texture and crunch fish before and I did not like it at all! We were the only diners in the entire place, it was quite strange the chef wasn't much of a talker and didn't really talk much about where the fish came from, just merely the name of the fish and that's all. Other than the snow crab from Norway. They did accommodate my allergy and replaced with Cho toro which was great! Pleasantly surprised was the dessert instead of boring ice cream, it was my favorite warabimochi!
