Our kitty was a six week old feral kitten when we got her and it took a lot of time and attention to get her comfortable with us. She would be out of sight being under furniture most of the time, because of this we named her "Hidey", a play on the name Heidi. Over the past couple of years she was slowly getting weaker, and I knew since she was 17, she was on the downhill slope of life. When it finally came time in December of this year, I sadly made the arrangements with Kakaako Pet Hospital. I chose to have her cremated with her ashes reutrned to me and the staff at KPH patiently went through what they'd be doing and what exactly to expect with a time frame. My appointment to have her put down was the following morning but my kitty went that night instead. Heartbreaking but that made me feel better that she was able to spend her last moments at home. I took her the next morning (Tuesday) to drop her off at KPH and was able to pick her up on Friday. Her ashes actually was ready the following day but a couple of things KPH does is get a plaster paw print of your pet and a clipping of fur if you choose to so the waiting was for the paw print to fully harden. All of this from the explaining of the total process and arranging with crematorium to doing something special like the paw print and fur clipping really made a big difference for me with comfortably being able to let go. From the first appointment after we adopted him in 2011 to his final day with us after 12 amazing years together, they have been so professional, compassionate, intelligent, and would give options without being pushy. Noelle at the front desk is exceptionally sweet, calm, and caring, even when extremely busy. Carlyn was so nice to help us carry our dog out of the car. And Kally was friendly, professional, accommodating, and really went above and beyond to make our dog and us feel comfortable and cared for when emotions ran high. Her genuinely kind heart made the entire process go as smoothly as possible. We actually adopted another dog, and Alyssia was awesome on the phone when I called to make her first appointment; so knowledgeable and personable. Our pups love going there, the staff are kind and caring towards us, all reflected in the text communion and in person, and the Doctor really cares with her phone calls and updates, unlike other places where you are always rushed in and out for the next patient. They will accommodate you for pick ups if your paw family needs to stay longer because you can't come right away due to work. Parking is always available, and luckily that patient visits are spaced out. Response time is great! We don't mind waiting in the car, the lot is good for access and exit which helps. The text notifications really help, too. Our pups enjoy the experience and get treated well. They are like family, even sending get well cards with that personal, family-like touch. Prices are fair and standard. You won't get the hard sell, they give you all the options. Pet insurance is a solution since Oahu's cost of living has increased since covid19 in 2019. I'm sure pet insurance will defray medical costs. They accept insurance, just ask. At Kakaako, most times you won't be rushed through like at other places, and you can work with the Dr. and staff, they understand the stress you go through worrying about your paw family when care is needed. Initially was alright, friendly staff however I noticed the veterinarian turnover was high and frequent. Recently removed all pets from this veterinary due to lackadaisical routine examinations by 2 different veterinarians which resulted in initial misdiagnosis. Then months of veterinary care which could have been avoided. Following veterinarian at another facility was able to address the health condition but due to being geriatric, he's having a difficult time recovering from a calicivirus reactivation stemming from the initial missed health condition which was not severe in the beginningof properly handled. Never coming back to this veterinary. Office manager dialog became irreverent, unaccountable, with deflection when just the notion that a grave misdiagnosis occurred. I should have discontinued coming here when a friend had a falling out with them due to an emergency with his pet there. My pet could have avoided a surgery because one individual missed the beginning signs even when asked then another inexperienced one misdiagnosed the condition and couldn't even handle a house pet no other veterinarian had difficulty with. Now there's continual after care which is still ongoing half a year later. There are more attentive veterinarians in Honolulu, if you value your precious pets. read more

Staff is always so helpful and friendly! They talk to my animals like I do. Right now the visitors park and call to check in. Someone will come out and get the pet to take to the doctor. They call when the visit is over and give you the recap and collect payment over the phone. They then come out with the pet, any medicine, and your receipt. Ive been going to them since 2018 for our old dog. We've been through diff vet docs from mainland to hawaii, but Kaka'ako Pet is the strongest and bestest group out there. I can write an essay why this practice is amazing, but i'll narrow it down to top 4 reasons: 1. Teamwork: this is paramount to their success. Everyone is organized, in sync and in harmony with each other. They deliver care efficiently and do try to be mindful of your time. Be patient though, just like a doctor's office they may run little behind... but its either because they got a life/death emergency that takes priority, or they are trying to deliver well-rounded care to a pet. Be patient, your turn will come and it will not be rushed. 2. The veterinarian: Dr Suganuma. Words cant describe how amazing she is. You have to meet her. Holistic and family-centered care. Smart and people person. Nonjudgmental. Let's be real: vet expenses are $$$$$$. Ive had to cut down costs bc I honestly cant afford it. Dr Suga understands ... she listens... and truly tells me what she thinks is best with being mindful of the costs. Shes amazing and a blessing and I hope she gets compensation on the higher end AND plenty of PTO to make her happy!!! 3. The staff: Alyssia front desk-Multi-tasker and hard worker. Shes helped calm my nerves and able fit my old puppy in for serious appointments. Kally (tech) is great and really takes her skills to a higher level of care and this explains why shes going to Vet school herself. Joyce (tech) is amazing too- cares for my dog as if its her dog. Admin (Carlyn and another person) has been there long time... they jump in when they need to with phones and other services. This is a strong and sound group. 4. Before taking our dog, Kai, to Kakaako Pet Hospital, we took him to VCA and Ali'i Pet Hospital. Previous locations weren't as friendly and personable as Kakaako Pet Hospital. Kai is sometimes stubborn and timid when going to the vet, one day we took him to Ali'i Pet Hospital and the nurse dragged Kai by the leash during his check in. During our first visit at Kakaako Pet Hospital the nurse talked calmly to Kai to feel comfortable. She even picked him up and carried him in! That really stood out to me. The nurses and Dr Koreyasu always want the best for Kai and always want him to be a happy healthy puppy. What made us want to stay with Kakaako Pet Hospital was our experience during our neuter appointment. Everything went smoothly. They answered all our concerns and put us at ease. Appointment and after care instructions was explained in details and they answered all the questions we had. We live all the way on the west side and don't mind driving all the way to town to bring Kai to the vet. The only negative thing I have to say about Kakaako Pet Hospital is the customer service over the phone. It is hit or miss. Sometimes they are nice and patient. The Kakaako Pet Hospital (KPH) staff are wonderful, they were right there by my side when I made the difficult decision to put Gypsy down. They explained the process and provided the privacy I needed to grieve the passing of my loyal and loving Gypsy. Gypsy and I are forever grateful. Although they too were quite busy, they managed to accept Hunter on a designated "standby hour" within a day of the request. Kakaako Pet clinic on Queen Street not only is the most expensive Vet in the immediate area but also they've just announced an increase of their prices which is totally unwarranted. Since Covid, they have yet to allow anyone inside the clinic, so there's no partaking in the experience or full understanding of what could be happening with your pet! you've got to park outside, they come out to you and each time it's a different doctor, no semblance of consistency and or quality! and i'm sorry you just can't get the in-depth knowledge or understanding that you and your pet needs and deserves. While talking from your car to a Vet, and remember your pet or Dog or whatever is inside the building there is a disconnect, I'm sorry that's just not sufficient especially considering the high price that they charge in this day and age. I went in there one time because my dog had a bum leg and limping, that's all I went there for and By the time I left I owed over $500 for services that I didn't ask for or necessarily needed at that time, they gave me no clear Diagnosis of what the problem could be? and yet they charged me over $500!! He tells me what's going on with my pet so truthfully and what the realistic outcomes will be. I currently have 2 great danes and 2 rotties that see him. Dr. Sakamoto and the staff took Such great care of my Skyy from the day she was diagnosed with Lymphoma til the day she passed away. I preface my review with 2 comments: 1) I had a similar experience as Janice H. some time back and as such, I never thought to go here and 2) I/my cat Sassie was not a patient here Here is my story: My cat Sassie was under Kapalama Pet Hospital's care but Sassie needed emergency attention. I called Kapalama and frantically told them to call Kakaako as I need to take Sassie right away. Not waiting for an answer, I hung up, grabbed Sassie and got her to Kakaako Pet Hospital. Five minutes did not pass when I arrived at Kakaako. Their staff immediately took Sassie under their care (it was literally like a scene from ER; only this scene was a Pet ER). Dr. Koreyasu is the caring and compassionate doctor who made sure I was okay and assured me that Sassie did not suffer. She permitted me to stay with Sassie for as long as I chose to and for a few minutes (which felt like an eternity), she stayed with me and gave me words of comfort. Now how cool is that? The entire staff extended comfort and paid condolence when I left. I will go back to Dr. Koreyasu with my cat Patches. By the way, they are a sister clinic to Kapalama Pet Hospital and Dr. Hirata. They have about 6 or so parking spaces, a nice green grass lawn for your pooch to do his thing before/after his appointment, friendly staff, a very clean facility, and great docs. They currently have two docs - Dr. Koreyasu and Dr. Sakamoto. Dr. Sakamoto is the newest staff member and he is Board Certified. He seems very knowledgeable and experienced. He's demeanor is a little stiff and "all business", but what's important is that he knows what he's doing. I became a puppy mommy at the beginning of this year and Dr. Koreyasu has been fantastic as a vet for Kai and as a resource for me in raising him. Kai is going to be a massive dog, he's currently only 7-8 months old but is around 65lbs, and will probably continue to grow. Dr. Koreyasu really walks you through the puppy process and holds your hand probably a little longer than most vets, but for me it was very much so welcomed. She guides you through destructive behaviors, where to go for obedience school, how to interpret of what your puppy is doing and what you can do to curb bad behavior early on. I have friends that are seeing other vets for their doggies on Oahu and it seems as though Dr. Koreyasu's prices are very reasonable. Each visit so far has been around $80 and that includes all vaccinations, medications, and testing. Kai also gets a complimentary ear clean and nail trim every time he goes. I love the set up of her office, there is a lawn outside that your doggie can use to do their thing if they have to and parking has never been an issue even though there are only 6 or 7 spots. Its very easy to get appointments and I believe a new vet was added to the team recently to help with appointment availability. The staff at the front always seems to remember your pet, they are very responsive to requests for medication orders and in answering questions. We came to Kakaako Pet Hospital for a second opinion about a surgery that my previous vet Ali'i Animal Hospital suggested for my dog, it's only like a couple blocks away. I was having issues with our original vet and I wanted to clear my anxiety to make sure my dog could travel safely since he had to fly in cargo for the first time. They were kind to us, they respected the previous vets diagnosis, and did a thorough second opinion. The previous vet had indirectly told me if I didn't do this surgery for brachycephalic airway syndrome he would die, and that he would be safer doing the surgery the day of our flight than not doing it at all. So I came to Kakaako Pet Hospital not caring about the price of anything; I just wanted to do what we needed for our dog. They were so kind, and professional, and our vet told us that our dog did not need the suggested surgery. I'm happy to say that my dog has travelled safely and healthily! Thank you guys so much for your help and kindness, I was so anxious before our appointment with you guys and I felt so much better after talking with you guys. They even suggested which sedatives our previous vet gave us for the flight would be good or not good for dogs taking before flight if we decided to use that. One of my dogs certainly has some chronic dermatitis and both Dr. Koreyasu and Dr. Sakamoto are always there to give me some good guidance on their treatment. The docs both have distinct personalities. Dr. Koreyasu is incredibly friendly and empathetic to our individual feelings to our 'lil best friends. Dr. Sakamoto alternatively, is a get-to-the-point, no-nonsense guy; both doctors are knowledgeable, and are able to set out the most appropriate treatments for our guys while working out best ways to reduce the pain to our wallets. Luckily, charges are moderately offset by pet insurance. All the techs are incredibly friendly and equally knowledgeable. Techs are able to at address our concerns with our pets; and if our questions are beyond their expertise, they promptly try to address them. The location is in the middle of the industrial shops of Kaka'ako, and serves to be a calm place during the night hours. The exam rooms are clean and appointed as expected, and does the job of caring for our 'lil guys. A little lawn on the property facilitates bio-breaks for the dogs. Dr. Sasaki, Dr. Koreyasu, and staff took great care of Chloé even with some unforeseen complications due to Chloé having a reaction to the sutures. Dr. Sasaki thoroughly explained to us every step of the way the reason for Chloé's reaction and helped her to recover quickly with some TLC. Kaka'ako Pet Hospital is, simply put, amazing. Every single member of their staff is knowledgeable, caring, respectful, kind, sweet, and professional. We moved to Oahu two years ago with our (at the time) 16 year old cat, Sirius. At first our visits were routine checkups and the staff at the hospital treated Sirius and us like family. When you come in for your scheduled visit they pull out all the stops to make you feel welcome and to keep your pet at ease. From personalized white board greetings, friendly people to chat with at the front desk, even offering refreshments while you wait. Their doctors are very knowledgeable, very kind, and very supportive. They even recently opened up a separate waiting area and exam rooms just for cats! Unfortunately, Sirius took a turn for the worse a half a year ago and developed tumors on most of his body. These people literally saved his life several times. And they did it with such care, such grace, and such respect. When the time finally came to send our boy off into sleep, they helped us even during one of the worst times in the world- with everything we think of as normal being upended by pandemic. While keeping themselves and us safe they still were able to support us through that last impossible visit. The care was so appreciated- they will never know how much. So much respect and kindness. If you are looking for a pet hospital and are using these reviews you honestly don't need to go further. If they take care of you and your pet even a fraction of how they treated us then you are going to have the best vet experience you have ever had. A couple of days ago, Snowy collapsed right in front of us when we were watching TV. He experienced breathing difficulties and his eyes were erratic. I was not even aware of the day or time. I could only focus on getting our wallets, car keys, phones, and shoes. We carried Snowy, who was by this time convulsing with labored breathing, and had loss of bladder control and his tongue was hanging out, getting into our car as quickly as possible with me cradling Snowy and my wife driving. As we headed out, I called KPH and was able to get hold of a person quickly, after a brief voice menu. "Hello, our dog Snowy has breathing difficulties. We are driving now to your location and will be there in 5 to 10 minutes... hello?" The person on the other side said, "Yes, yes, we will be here for you." My wife drove, and I helped her navigate, telling her not to look at Snowy and focus on the road. We drove at a prompt but controlled speed, waiting anxious for slow cars and traffic lights. Every second counted. I could feel Snowy's every labored breath, his little heart beating preciously with great difficulty, every breath perhaps his last. I disciplined my mind to stay focused because we did not want to get into any accident, or make the wrong turns and waste time. As we approached Kaka'ako Pet Hospital, I told my wife it's ok, we are almost there, stay focused. At this time, Snowy began convulsing again, and I felt he missed a few heartbeats, and his breathing seemed to also miss a few breaths. We turned into the parking area, my wife stopping the car at a wrong angle, and I told her to honk. She could not think of anything else and pressed the horn. I was also struggling to stay logical and focused. I told her to get out of the car and yell for help from the staff. She did so and within seconds, one of KPH's staff had already rushed out with open arms. At this exact second, Snowy violently convulsed, his head fell over even more, and all his legs stiffened into the air. With horror, I thought Snowy had died in my arms at that moment. I focused myself to move, opening the car door, and heard "I'll take him!" from the KPH staff. I handed Snowy over, and she rushed in with him. We waited in the car for a long half hour, after which Dr. Antonides came out to inform us of the status. She was not sure they could fully revive Snowy, and told us to prepare ourselves. After another long wait, Dr. Antonides came out again and told us they had managed to revive and stabilize Snowy and he was now breathing inside an oxygen box, but did not seem able to breathe on his own, and we needed to make some very difficult decisions. She gave us the rational options for us to think about. At no time did she give us false hope, or steer us toward euthanasia, letting us come to terms with the situation ourselves and decide what we felt was best for Snowy. We deliberated excruciatingly for two hours, hoping to give Snowy some time to stabilize but also realizing he was unable to breathe on his own. KPH was not equipped for long term life support. Neither did we want such a prolonged situation for Snowy. I asked Dr. Antonides about the level of suffering if we were to bring Snowy home so he could die at home, but she explained to us it would be very painful and there would be a lot of suffering for him. Thus, it was under impossible conditions that we made the impossible choice and agreed together as Snowy's pet parents to have him be taken to sleep. I was worried due to COVID we would not be allowed to be with him for the procedure, but Dr. Antonides assured us we could be, and they have a special room for such a procedure. We went home to get Snowy's bedding (which he had slept in since the day we adopted him from the animal rescue organization) and one of his favorite jackets (which he wears if it is too cold and he has his fur trimmed). KPH staff were very understanding and courteous and supported us at every step of this extremely difficult final task to ease Snowy's suffering, letting us take as much time as we needed to be with him until the final injection. I even saw business owner Dr. Pauline, who had seen Snowy many times over the years, and talked to her about the cremation options. Both my wife and I caressed and stroked Snowy for his final procedure. I wanted to be absolutely sure he did not suffer, and that we did everything humanly possible to ease his pain. While disoriented, his eyes looked at us and he seemed to recognize my wife in the final few minutes. When the fluid was injected, he passed in literally 3 to 5 seconds. I did not feel him convulse or stiffen, before or after the injection, so I know he did not suffer at all. Today we went to Kaka'ako Pet Hospital to take Snowy's ashes, and have the respectful condolences of the entire team. Snowy and we thank everyone at Kaka'ako Pet Hospital for helping us over the years and especially during this final difficult moment to minimize the suffering of dog and humans. Mahalo. read more

Need a Vet in town? This is the place! The entire staff is friendly and courteous. The facility has ample parking, it's very clean, and inviting. They even have a grassy area for your pet to relieve themselves before going in. My dog sees Dr. Koreyasu. She's great with pets and really listens to what you have to say. She will explain everything to you and offer suggestions when needed. They also do an excellent job cleaning my dog's teeth. Not one negative thing to list here. Aloha. read more

I have since changed to a different vet maybe a week after the incident at Kakaako. During the first visit the new vet noticed a heart murmur which wasn't even the reason I had taken him in. The vet at kakaako didn't notice which leads me to believe that my dog was never fully examined and validates my concern that he wasn't properly looked at during that last visit to Kakaako in which they literally looked at him for less then five minutes then called and said he was done. This is particularly concerning since you expect the vet to check the basics since you are paying a fee for your pet to be examined which should include checking the heart beat which takes a few seconds. This is quite disappointing as service used to be excellent here. read more

I wasn't really impressed my first visit but today DR.Judy and her beautiful assistant were amazing. Charlie Day, my cat, is flying to the mainland as cargo (which we are both very upset about) but Dr.Judy came in to the room super happy, friendly and loving towards Chuck and eased my mind a great deal. He needed a couple shots and they were so gentle and kind to him. I'm always afraid of putting my cat through stress because cats can be pussies, but he has been his happy cuddly self since we got home. Not to mention, it wasn't really that bad for him while it was happening . Judy was super quick. From the front desk staff greeting us, to our departure, everyone is so fricken kind and sweet. You can really tell they care not only about the animal, but the owners comfort levels too. I was really impressed how patient the Doc and assistant were with him. They let him explore the room and get comfortable. They also gave him lots of love and snugs!!!!! The doctor had some good travel recommendations to keep my tiny champion of the sun comfortable. I got pheromone spray for his crate and he seems to be loving it so far! I really wish I could pack this Pet hospital and take it with us!!!!! This past Saturday, September 14, around 3:40 pm. we rushed our beloved pet Kolohe to this hospital because he was in a diabetic seizure. The staffs took Kolohe as soon as we told them Kolohe is having seizure. This is our first time here at this hospital. Because we both knew our Kolohe was in serious trouble. I started crying. Bay & Kimi both came & comforted me and got me some water. They both checked on me on & off. Dr. Kenny was genuine, caring, and very clear with the findings of the tests results. She explained in details and make sure we understand the whole situation. Dr. Yasunaga and staff are wonderful. I was very concerned about finding the right vet after leaving my dogs vet since she was 6wks old and 7yrs of long history to come to Hawaii. Southern needed to be put under anesthesia for her teeth cleaning. A fairly routine procedure, except for my furbaby has had trouble with "routine anesthesia" from dental care in the past. I informed Dr. Yasunaga of my anesthesia concerns, and being a nurse I'm even more of a nervous dog mom! I called two days before surgery with a slew of questions and the staff tried to answer everything they could, they also left a message with Dr. Yasunaga to call me back. She spoke with me for a solid 10mins answering questions and I never felt she was rushed to get me off the phone. The day of surgery everyone knew I was worried about my furbaby and they kept me so informed. Much better than bedside nurses and hospital doctors! I was called prior to IV placement to make sure it was ok to shave her leg to make it easier and to be notified they were starting. I received pictures as requested and a text when she was finished, followed by a followup phone call from Dr. Yasunaga. Everyone went above and beyond to make me feel at ease and as comfortable as I was with my vet back home. I'm so great to have found a vet in Hawaii that is up to date, and so accommodating and caring with pleasant friendly staff. I would love to recommend Kaka'ako Pet Hospital, but I want to keep them a secret too so we can always get an appointment when needed Caring veterinary clinics can be difficult to come by as it is a business. More than 2 years ago, I was brought here with my dog, Hera, after my dog was badly hit by a car (the driver wasn't at fault) because my primary pet clinic wasn't open for emergencies. First impression everyone was very nice. They did everything they could to save my dog; fortunately, they did and I am very grateful for that. The bill was more expensive than my primary pet clinic, and I just wish they had suggested getting a CT scan on her early on because my dog developed breathing problems about a month after the accident. All they could have done was X-rays and antibiotics. Antibiotics were making her feel ill and she didn't want to eat or drink. She wasn't getting any better and We had to go back to her primary pet clinic for a second opinion and they suggested a CT scan at a VCA in Pearl City. Found out she had a fractured nose that healed up wrong causing her to have breathing problems. It was too late to fix it and no veterinarian knew how to fix it. Today, my dog still has a breathing problem and barely can breathe out of her nose, but she learned to breathe out of her mouth and make silly noises from it. her breathing problem does affect her daily: easily choking on treats, wheezing/inverted sneezing noises whenever she runs or gets too excited, and can't sleep belly up while having to sleep with a toy in her mouth to breathe better. Luckily, she acted like nothing wrong happened to her. read more
