The price of the haircut was reasonable, about half the price of my usual, and they gave me exactly what I wanted--which was a Korean style super layered haircut (I think some even consider it a long wolf cut)--and they kept my length while making my hair super light for the summer. She is very knowledgeable, her attention to detail is her experience and knowledge. she listens to your wants and your wishes and creates a look that stands out from the rest. The staff is friendly and they all work as a team. The shampoos and conditioners and hair color are quality highend products. They leave your hair shiny, healthy, silky soft. My hair is in the best shape. I love that they don't make you feel like a number and they don't book 3 to 4 appointments at the same time and make you feel rushed. I'm blessed with a full head of hair and thick. In the past other salons would schedule an appointment for highlights and they would start out by using the foils to create the highlights the right way, then eventually they start just doing touch up and you end up with a head of hair that is rushed and the color looks like crap. Honestly this place has everything I want - no frills but still nice and clean, attentiveness and skill in cutting hair, etc. BUT! I am 100% sure they put some type of relaxant or chemical straightener in their shampoo/conditioner or the blowdry products because I have natural slight waves and walked out of the salon with super straight hair that took me at least 2 months to wear off and go back to my natural state. I also have much more split ends than usual, popping up much earlier on after a trim. I was so confused the first time I washed my hair after my haircut with them. My hair was still really crazy straight. I wish they would have said something :( I have really nice natural Asian hair that is smooth and voluminous and it was jarring to walk around with stick straight and flat hair I did not consent to essentially. Not a big deal but very weird experience and will probably be looking for a new place next time. read more

This is my favorite salon in San Diego to get my hair cut. Staff is extremely friendly and helpful. There are 2-3 staff members depending on the day. My favorite part is when they shampoo/condition your hair. They are extremely thorough and my hair always feels so clean. Prices are reasonable especially for the quality of service. I had been here more than once and every time I really liked how they did my hair. Recently about a week ago or so I came back and the outcome of my hair was atrocious. Before my hair was cut I had showed them a picture of what I wanted but it came out looking nothing like the picture. It looks like I have a bowl cut with a long mullet. . Never in my life had I cried over a bad haircut until that day. I spent the next 24 hrs sobbing over how stupid and ugly I looked. The haircut is so bad im scared to go out in public and even went to go buy a wig. Not to mention I have very important events coming up and my hair makes me look like a fool. I arrived expecting to be acknowledged by someone or someone asking for my name. No one was at the reception desk. That was not a problem because they were all busy. I arrived before my 3:00 appointment but didn't get seated until 3:30 pm. The owner asked if I had a picture and I showed it. Btw... I speak English but understand Korean. Due to me not wearing my glasses, I couldn't tell or see how she was cutting my hair, but the employees were speaking in Korean "oh, you're cutting it really short". That got me nervous. In the meantime, they made remarks in Korean that "she asked for a haircut in the picture was pretty, but not sure on her". She took her time and when she finished, she didn't even give me a mirror to see the back of my head. What I'm upset about is that she should have consulted with me how short she was planning on cutting my hair or how she felt the shape wouldn't look good on my head. She cut it way shorter than I like and the fact that I like to put my hair behind my ears. Consultation is everything when it comes to hair and I didn't get that. I've gone to this salon many times over the years, but only twice with this new owner. Will not return. read more

I have been to many expensive salons in San Diego including places Belli Belli in Pacific Beach and Robert Chromeans Salon downtown. Though I had good experiences at those places, Kakopoco is still the best in every category for me. Jenny has easily done some of the best cuts I've ever had. I really enjoyed the quiet relaxing atmosphere as well. The best part is the haircut is fairly priced so I feel I have money left over to give a well deserved tip. 2nd time coming here this year: 1st was before covid-19, 2nd time was in of November 2020. Even with everything happening, Kakopoco manages to deliver high quality and very safe service for a reasonable price. I called on Friday and hot an appointment for Saturday at Noon. When I came, they asked if I was Khang, checked my temperature, and then had me wait only a few minutes before washing and cutting my hair. Everyone was wearing masks, there was no more than 4-5 people in the room at once (when I got to my haircut, I was the only customer in the shop). The shop is very peaceful, clean, and well kept. I don't know the barbers makes but both were extremely kind and skilled at cutting hair, especially Asian hair. I showed her a picture, gave my desired side length, and that was all that was needed. Zero stars, do NOT come here. I have never been to a salon that was so rude. In summary, I was convinced to purchase a perm then received a nightmare. They did not help at all to try to fix the situation and instead blamed me. Kakapoco does not care if they mess up your hair once you pay. I feel taken advantage of. Pre-Salon: I was visiting from out of town in order to get my hair cut. I was also considering the perm in the photo where the girl has a single wave in her hair but was indecisive. The salon encouraged me to book both first then cancel if I choose otherwise. My hair was pretty healthy and I was excited. Salon Experience: There's an assistant who translates Korean from the salon owner, Heeya, who doesn't speak English. I showed the photo multiple times to confirm that I wanted my hair to look that way and they agreed. Heeya cut my hair within five minutes. At this point, I was still unsure about getting the perm in the photo, but they kept telling me that it would look very cute due to my "round face and big eyes" and the hairstyle could be replicated. I didn't know what type of perm they would do, but they seemed very confident. I decided not to ask too many questions due to the language barrier and since I would be satisfied as long as it matched the photo. Big mistake. I ultimately got this "special perm" which used "hot rocks", and I was told that I should get a "root perm" with little rods in my hair for more volume. When I finished perming and washing, my hair was very curly and dry (no shine) from root to tip - about a 2B curl. I decided to trust the hairstylist that everything would loosen up. They blew out my hair until the curls loosened a bit. When I asked about hair care, I was reassured that my hair would be straighter if I brushed it while drying it, it would be "extremely easy to manage". I was told to wait at least 24 hours before washing. After paying and tipping generously (I always do), I had to go back because they forgot to give me bangs. I knew the perm wasn't what I asked for either, but it looked ok enough and I decided I could learn to like it. Post-Salon: I did a lot of research about taking care of my perm so it would set properly. I didn't touch it for 48 hours instead of 24 just to be sure. I spent hours deciding which hair products were best. With care, I rinsed, dried, used product, and blew it out like the salon did. Poof! My hair was a damaged and curly frizz ball, brushing made it worse! Over the next two days, I tried again to deep condition multiple times, conditioning extra, and using leave-in products. But every time, no matter if I blow-dried it or air-dried it (twisting), it would puff out in curls. I spent hours fixing and moisturizing my hair, but my sleek, long hair had changed into 12-year-old Hermoine's hair from Harry Potter. Fixing: Four days after leaving the salon, I was leaving San Diego in two days. I looked online and, to my horror, they were closed Mon/Tues. At midnight after crying, I decided to leave a voicemail asking them to fix my hair if possible, but instead, the owner picked up, didn't understand me, and hung up. It was late at night, so I felt guilty, sad, and helpless because I wanted to politely communicate. I have never asked for my money back for any service. Since I was leaving before Wednesday and wanted to get my hair done at an Asian salon, I had no choice but to book a nearby salon to fix the hair. Long story short, the other salon told me that I received the wrong perm type, the root perm was a bad idea for my thick hair, and my hair was very damaged. I paid even more than I originally spent to fix it, but was so glad the nightmare was over. Calling back: I politely called back the following day after leaving San Diego, nicely explaining my story to the assistant to translate and asking for a refund of any amount for the trouble, since I thought that any honest business would be open for discussion. However, the owner repeatedly implied that I was lying and has refused to see a single photo because "a picture doesn't mean anything". They constantly accused me of being shady for "waiting 4 days to call" and said it was impossible because they "only curled the ends of the hair" (which is false). I even provided the contact for the salon that fixed my hair when they asked for it. Even stranger - they wouldn't give me an email for the photos because they don't want to "release personal info" (???). After two days of calling, the only way Heeya would consider seeing the photo was if I sent a friend of mine in-person to the salon to show her. When my friend arrived, they saw my photos and recognized me. Then, they tried to tell my friend that they actually didn't know who I was and that they never cut my hair? I eventually got some portion back after a while, but I'm still very upset. I wouldn't be surprised if they respond to this calling me a liar, but let the photos prove my point. read more

I knew things boded well as soon as the stylist began shampooing - a strong head massage goes a long way! After I pulled up a few sample photos, she got to work, showing a lot of care in trimming and shaping my layers. I'm very pleased with the result.
