Hands down the best haircut experience I've had. Having gone to a family friend's salon for years, I was hesitant trying a new place and thoroughly scoured Yelp to deal with my unmanageable hair length. Based on the reviews, I was warned that there might be a bit of a language barrier, but I was okay with that. There was no communication lost where it mattered. I came in around 10am for a walk-in appointment and was instantly seated. Heeya, the hair stylist who owns the salon asked what I was looking for, I responded that I wanted layers. She asked how many layers, and I stared at her blankly. I had never once been asked how many layers I wanted in a layered haircut before, and once Heeya recognized my inexperience, she proceeded to explain the difference between a two-layer vs. three-layered look. I opted for a two-layer haircut, and Heeya asked if I had ever considered adding more volume with a perm. If you've read the yelp reviews as thoroughly as I had, you'll know that if this lady so much as hints that you bleach your hair white and add cheetah spots, you just nod and go along with it. I had never gotten a perm before, but I was open to recommendations, so with that, my half hour walk-in turned into a 2-hour long appointment. Heeya's assistant, Joyce, spoke perfect English and helped with translation when necessary. She informed me that their salon was one of the only ones that performed a collagen treatment to protect the hair from the chemicals and heat used in the perming process. I think the total came out to be a little over $200, the most I've ever spent on a haircut, but let me tell you, it was worth every penny. Never have I ever looked so good coming out of a hair salon. I had always thought that haircuts were something you had to grow into, but Kakopoco has changed my perspective. The photo I'm attaching shows just how lovely my hair looks the DAY OF the appointment. It's been 6 months since my appointment in mid-July 2019, and while my perm is supposed to last 3 months, it's still noticeably wavy, weighed down only by the new hair that has grown since my haircut. Half a year later, it's at its point where the curls are more like natural waves, kind of like how your hair looks when you wake up to them the day after curling. I absolutely love how low-maintenance this look is, partially because I don't have to continuously subject my hair to the heat of a curling iron, and the other part being that I don't have to learn how to use that stupid curling iron. Heed my advice and trust the hair stylists. I would not hesitate to get a perm here or frankly anything Heeya and Joyce recommend. read more

I wanted a place to have a korean influenced haircut so I decided to come here. Was a bit confusing st first to find their place, but I eventually found it. The two women were very nice and offered tea & coffee which I thought was kind of dope. They do walk ins, but I think it would be better to just make an appointment since I had to wait just wait only a few minutes to start my haircut. They knew what a two block cut was so didn't have to explain that. I gave a few pictures for references and they pretty much did exactly what I wanted. They did offer a perm to me which I never did before, but I was trying for a new look so I took it anyways. It was 100% worth and now I love my new look. It's definitely something I've never tried before, but looking at it now I would always go back for it. They gave me tips on what to do to keep my hair in check and it was overall a great experience! read more

I am writing a review as I wait for my hubby it has been super hard finding a salon that cuts his hair to his liking since we moved to SD county. I saw the reviews here and decided to book and see how he liked it. I love the space and the waiting area has a little kitchenette area with coffee or tea you can have while you wait. It is very clean and calling to make an appointment was very easy! My hubby's haircut took maybe 15-20 min and got a hair wash. It is $25 plus tip but already I can tell his hair looks super nice! The ladies were fast and did a great job! It is a pricey compared to other places but you can tell the difference. Very happy we found a place for him to come to!!! We will be regulars read more

If your looking for a modern 2 block haircut with texture, this isn't the place for men. First, they don't even ask you how do you do your hair, which is a red flag. They just cut it. What I want executed was a 2 block haircut with a side part but it came out nothing like that. Hana texturized my hair way too much so now my hair actually looks spikey more than texturized. She also blended the top of my hair to the side of my hair so now there isn't actually any undercut to my hair. My quest to find a decent hair salon for men continues.... read more

I came in for a perm and decided to cut my hair short. It was nice environment and they provide a locker for you to place your personal items. That's a plus for me. Then I showed the lady on the front desk the hair style and the band I want. I understand you wouldn't able to get exactly what you want, but the outcome its pretty different, it got shorter then I expected, then the end was not curl in the right direction. They mention it afterwards said it will curl outwards (which I don't want) in the morning but still doesn't make sense. Then I ask layer, they explain because I have short hair layer will make it messy in the morning, but the picture I showed them it have layer.. So I just got home, & I just did my "Digital Perm" I ask the lady if its too damaged Im just gonna get a haircut, but She told me its okay "its not that damaged" So we begin the process & after 1/2 Hour its done. At the front its fine but when I got home and saw my hair at the back I got disappointed. The lady who did my hair is so nice & the owner just gave me Shiny oil thingy for my hair. I made my way here to fix a bad haircut I had previously. The lady gave me the even and layered cut I needed, and the entire process from shampoo to cut and style took about an hour. The salon may not be the most luxurious, but the service was top-notch. At a reasonable price of $50 without tips, it was worth every penny. I came here for a men's perm+haircut and unfortunately my experience was similar to Eric T's review. I came with here a picture of what I wanted and was given something very different (that one hairstyle that's popular in kdramas). During my visit I was expecting some consultation on what would look good for my face shape, if my hair was long enough, etc but they just went to work right away without asking me any questions. Steer clear if you are looking for a men's perm. I almost never write reviews, let alone bad ones, but I felt like I should share my experience for others. I went in for a man's cut and perm. I showed the hair stylist multiple pictures of exactly what I wanted (what my hair looked like after my last perm + inspiration photos). It was the same style as my current hair, just shorter with a loose perm. Basically I was looking for a wavy middle part, which I've gotten many times at other hairdressers after showing them the exact photos I showed at Kakopoco. The initial cut looked solid. I was hopeful that I found a new hair stylist in San Diego. That being said, the perm was a different story. At the end of the process, it looked like I had an Afro. The hair stylist obviously used curlers that were far too small, rolled those curlers far too tight and left the curlers in for far too long. After realizing that she had totally messed up the hair, my original hair stylist left to take care of another client and put a second hair stylist in charge of trying to fix the styling. She did her best, but it was too far gone. Now I am trying to fix hair that is WAY too curly without damaging it. While the second hair stylist was nice in trying to take care of the issue, the result was simply flawed and so far from what I asked for. Considering the appointment took 2.5 hours (~1 hr longer than usual in my experience) and cost $100, I am very dissatisfied. I would not, nor will I ever come here again. read more

Was on the hunt to look for a new stylist for my daughter. We both searched for weeks and finally decided to give this place a try. Was able to get an appointment the next day with Hana. My daughter wanted curtain bangs and layers. As soon as my daughter showed Hana a picture of the style she wanted, Hana looked at it for literally a second and said no problem. Wanted to like this place, but I didn't exactly get the haircut I wanted. I showed them what I wanted, which was considerably longer than what they gave me. Told them I wanted something slightly shorter than that but not to the point that they actually cut it. They got started and it's as if they went by muscle memory to one specific haircut that seems to be popular. After they were done, I saw what it was. Sure enough, it's the one haircut that seems to be popular with k-pop boy bands and their fans. Not really a fan of that and was pretty disappointed. They were really nice so I didn't say anything about it while I was there but the more i looked at it at home, the more I disliked it. Quite literally the fastest haircut I've ever had in my life (aside from straight up shaving my head). In and out in exactly 18 minutes! As an Asian dude with medium length hair, I am pretty picky about which hair salon I go to. I wanna come out looking like a Kpop star but I also wanna make sure I have enough money to pay off student loans. I was pretty pleased to this balance at Kakpoco :) Male haircuts are $25 (at the time of this review in 2019), which is probably the cheapest I've seen in the area and the barber is really skillful. Apparently there's only one hair stylist who works here + an assistant so you can't really go wrong in terms of ending up with the wrong person. They also use razors here to cut hair if that was something you were looking for. Overall had a great experience here. Not super familiar with all of the hair salons in the area yet but I would probably come back again! read more

The two lovely ladies here work very hard and does a wonderful job at making you beautiful! I got a Korean magic straight perm last minute and they were kind enough to squeeze me into their tight schedule. I was there for about 4 hours and they made sure that I was comfortable the whole time. They are the sweetest hairstylists I've ever met and did an amazing job with my hair. I've been meaning to write this review for quite some time now. I've already had 3 haircuts from this place, and it is my definite go to for haircuts. It's been surprisingly difficult to find someone who knows how to cut asian hair well. I've always wanted to try the two-block haircut, and I felt like a lot of places I went to didn't know how to do it. Or they said they did, but it would come out wrong. Here, I could immediately tell they knew what they were doing. I didn't even have to explain anything. I've been to some salons that charge a lot of money and spend an hour cutting my hair. I think it's because they believe that the more time they spend, the more it makes the money worth it. I don't believe this is true. At Kakopoco, my cuts are done quickly and efficiently and they come out perfect. So not only do they know how to cut asian men hair well, they cut it very efficiently. Lastly, I took a chance with a men's perm, and I am soooo glad I did. My wife, family, and friends loved the look. If they ever move, I am definitely planning on following them where ever they go. read more

First Review ever on Yelp and I felt this place was well deserving of the first review. For me, I had a cut recently where I had a hard time deciding if I wanted to keep it longer or short. Once I was at home, I was like shoot maybe I should go for the shorter cut on the sides and I was questioning, "Am I able to go back after I got the haircut and told them I was satisfied?". To my surprise, they were very welcoming of the fact and allowed me to go back and get the sides fixed to my liking. After the cut, they even washed it for me and suggested what products I could use. I was in the neighborhood running errands. Found this small salon and walked in. I was seated very quickly. Owner was a Korean lady. Efficient and quick. Cut the chit chat get to know the customer crap and went straight to business lol. Kind of cool experience. Especially if you're in a rush or not in the mood of spending two hours in a salon. (Which could also be a con for someone who doesn't dig this.) To be honest I wasn't happy with how my new hair looked at first. BUT after styling it MY WAY later, I loved it! She was fast but not rough. Listened to my requests and gave her opinions at the same time which was very professional. My only complaint is the service. Wish they could be more friendly. I moved down to San Diego for a year or so and did not know where to cut my hair without having to wait until I visited home. I am very happy that I found Kakopoco! Here is my review: Safety during Covid19- The hair stylist are all wearing masks and your temperature is checked upon walking in. The salon is really nice and clean, they keep everyone a good distance from each other, and only allow a certain number of customers inside (2 or 3). While my friend and I were getting our haircut, another customer came in early and was asked to wait outside or in the car, they would call them in when we were almost done. Service - Everyone was welcoming upon arriving and made us feel comfortable. Summer cut my hair and did an amazing job! I got a bob hair cut, one length and she even styled it after too. I love the shampoo they used because it smelt minty and refreshing. After the cut, she sprayed this lychee cent in my hair which was nice.
