I have loved Kakuna Sushi since they appeared during the pandemic in Fremont. We've ordered from them monthly for years now via Doordash, or sometimes deciding to go pick it up in person. So imagine our delight now that they have a location in Milpitas closer to home! We stopped by last weekend and got our usual: Kakuna Roll, Crunchy Mango Roll, Philadelphia Roll, and Phoenix Roll. How lucky that the Phoenix Roll was free for their grand opening promotion! Just came in today 5/3 and they doubled the interior! They took over the space next to them and are adding additional tables and chairs. So happy they're expanding because their sushi is so good. Their 2nd space side is very spacious and they're building out the interior as we were dining. The rolls I ordered were the hamachi, jalapeño, and avocado roll. I loved that the jalapeños were spicy! My father in law thought it was too spicy. Lol. If you love spicy food like me, it's not a bad level of heat. I also got the citrus roll. I loved the lemon slice on top! The flavor was yummy but I wish the pieces weren't so huge! It was hard to eat and they fell apart because they were such big pieces (they probably could have sliced them thinner). It also came with some sort of dip...I didn't like it so I just tossed it. Well my wife saw this new sushi opening so she want to try since the one in Fremont had 4 star.. Eventually the place is small inside but they also had tent outside.. Sushi decorations looks beautiful but The sushi had no flavors .. soft shell Crab was terrible, it burns and taste plain. I really want give this place 4 star but to be honest they need to upgrade their sushi more.. I had a feeling their sushi was frozen types 1 or 2 days not fresh making.. The services were nice. From the outside, kinda like one of those divey spots where only the locals know about. I was actually looking forward to trying this place out. Walked in, I thought it was one of those places where I placed my orders at the counter and then proceed to find a spot to sit, surprisingly it was a sir down restaurant. My party of 5 was seated in the back corner in the room next door. The restaurant was fairly empty when we arrived, so I found it interesting they sat us so secluded. Our server was initially quite attentive, but that changed dramatically once we placed our order! The food portions were huge, the sushi looked and tasted fresh and their prices were reasonable. They had a variety of sushi options on the menu. Our orders had a few missing items and our hot cups of tea remained empty after the first serving. I definitely had high hopes for Kakuna. Upon entering, it looks and reminds me of the no frills good food mom and pop places that I grew up going to. Unfortunately the food and experience didn't meet my expectations. Service was uneven at best. One of the servers was friendly but seemed inexperienced. No smiles, no friendliness, seemed like I was bothering him when I asked for basics like water, the bill, etc. Oh well. Prices were outstanding. And the pieces of sushi (rolls and nigiri) were huge! But as the saying goes, you get what you pay for. Nigiri Combo. The presentation was nice, the spiral staircase of sushi. But some of the fish wasn't cut properly. The sizes were uneven. 1 of the pieces had so much sinew (the white tissue that looks like lines) that I couldn't even chew through it. Overall quality of fish was low, but again the prices are low so I shouldn't have assumed much I guess. Chicken Teriyaki Bento. Some of the pieces were really good, juicy and tender. Some of the pieces were charred beyond edibility. I meant burnt black. Mostly the end pieces. Again very inconsistent. Kakuna Roll. Really overdressed with sauce. You definitely couldn't taste any of the fish on this roll. Really heavy for me. Spicy scallop roll. Pretty standard. It was ok. Negihama (yellowtail). Actually my favorite roll of the night. Nice delicate taste of yellowtail. I probably ate most of this roll leaving my family none or maybe 1 piece. Overall Kakuna is a basic Japanese restaurant that caters to budget friendly patrons. If you enjoy rolls with bold flavors and lots of sauce, you might try this place. As for me, I would rather pay a little more to get a higher quality of fish. As I said, you get what you pay for. It's a very bare bones restaurant, but you're not really there for the setting since it's more of a quick sushi spot to satisfy those roll cravings. The prices are very reasonable! 1. Sumo Roll - 9/10. This was my favorite roll because it had a lot of unagi sauce and some type of sriracha mayo. It only had 5 pieces, but the pieces were big! 2. Hokkaido Roll - 7/10. This was pretty good, they give you a generous portion of scallops on top of your rolls. For whatever reason, I thought this roll lacked in flavor compared to the other rolls we got. It may have been the combination of rolls we got, but it was still very solid. 3. 49ers Roll - 8/10. This was in between the sumo and hokkaido in terms of flavor. We came here around 6PM on a Saturday, not too bad. We got seated right away. We beat the dinner rush which started around 7PM. The service here was phenomenal. Alex was our server and he was amazing also very attentive! Always kept up with our waters and gave great recommendations. Alex and Thong definitely made our night running the front of house together. They were hilarious!! The rolls we ordered were Super Crunch, Mango Crunch, Cherry Blossom, Boujee and Kamikaze. Each one of these rolls were hand crafted to perfection, you can tell that they care about what they put out.... We also got Spicy & Black Garlic Ramen. It was really good! The broth was flavorful and spicy. The Pork Belly was tender. For Appetizers we got the Edamame Spicy Garlic, we drizzled some Soy Sauce on it, gave it an extra kick. This place was definitely a surprise. We came in on a Sunday afternoon. A good amount of people were dining in. Service was very attentive and our rolls and soup came out fast.
