Heard great recommendations from a friend and so I waited for the hype to die down to try, and it did not disappoint! This is one of the best katsu places in the bay and is comparable to the katsu I had in Hawaii (: For two people, getting your own katsu set is enough. My partner & I didn't need assorted tempura side because we got really full! Also experienced katsu-fried flavor fatigue lol. If you get katsu here, make sure its the Hire Katsu! It was tender and juicy! I heard the regular katsu is drier and can be tough. I am a curry katsu girly and the curry was good! Though I prefer curry from Curry Hyuga, the katsu here is wayyyy better. At other places, the katsu is either small or on the tougher side. This place definitely gets busy and they know how to make good katsu. I appreciate how flaky the katsu was and the miso soup was also tasty. Unlike other places, the miso soup wasn't grainy. I want to come back again, but Katsu Gin is a far drive for me. If I was in the area, I'll go a lot more.

    Tonkatsu Curry set

Upon recommendation by a friend, we came here to eat. I had wanted to like this place, but It's the little things that bother me here, though there definitely were some highlights. And if some changes are made, it may be better. We ordered the Tonkatsu Curry set, the Kirekatsu set, and the Udon w/ curry set. The commonality of the three dishes were the three huge "bricks" of tonkatsu. Though they were awesomely juicy and had a nice crunch to the coating, they lacked flavor. I believe this is due to the shear size of the tenderloin (each one would constitute one serving of meat.) Even with tonkatsu sauce (very sparsely drizzled), the flavor was lacking. I prefer the bite-sized cuts instead. Perhaps the most frustrating is the weight of each brick made it a challenge to hold with chopsticks (in all fairness, they did provide a fork . . .). And twice I dropped the brick into my bowl of udon, splashing the curry broth everywhere. Grrrrr! The curry had a spicy kick at the start, but then . . . Mixed feelings. Difficult to describe, but it seems that there was an emphasis more on the spiciness, but not much on flavor? For me, the blend was not balanced. That is what each of us felt. The curry sauce for the udon was nice, however and did not overpower the noodles. The highlights were the pickled carrots and scallion bulbs - outstanding! And they were my favorite item of the entire meal! Very crunchy and packed with flavor, the carrots were delicious, and the small scallion bulbs were crunchy and sweet (though a bit too sweet, in my opinion). These veggies are an effective, but effective palette cleanser. Second most-liked was the bowl of shredded cabbage. The sesame miso dressing was very tasty. With the huge amount of cabbage, the dressing was not nearly enough. I suggest cutting back on the amount of cabbage served and keep the amount of dressing as is. If the wait staff see an excessive amount of uneaten cabbage, that may be a sign to cut back on the serving size... The wait staff were friendly and attentive. Kudos here. It is strange that my accolades principally were of the condiments and the salad, and not of the main dishes. The word "proportion" may sum it up succinctly - make the tonkatsu smaller, cut back on the amount of cabbage in the side salad to better balance the dressing with the cabbage. I may come back to try the other offerings if I am in the area again.

The place was small, but the staff were nice. There was a large range of options to choose from. I just felt like the flavor wasn't there as much. The curry was good, but the katsu were cut really big. It should be a bit smaller. The don katsu is full of onion. Onion on the bottom, in the eggs. If I didn't know any better, I thought I had ordered a bowl of onion and rice. The pork cutlet was dry and the rice was really really sweet. The presentation of everything was nice. Overall, I would say this is not for me, but it might be for others.

I came her for a group dinner and the staff was super accommodating! We had a toddler and they were very willingly able to seat us where a high chair was convenient, but we ended up not needing one. Service was solid. I got the Tonkatsu set and added fish katsu and I must say that I was very much impressed with the Fish katsu! They give you an assortment of sauces, a side salad, rice, and miso soup. The sauces worked perfectly well with the fry on the katsu and the batter on the katsu was nice and light. Every bite was delicious and felt lie i was eating a clean cut of crispy protein. Absolutely delicious!

Pretty solid katsu spot in Milpitas! Plaza has ample parking which is nice. The interior is on the smaller side so I remember feeling really close to our neighboring table. Our waitress was kind and and greeted us as we were seated, and the food came out pretty quickly. Both my friend and I got the pork loin katsu with curry and it was tasty. I rated a 4 because everything was good but I wouldn't say its one of the best.

Located in a small plaza, this cozy restaurant has a clean atmosphere and a handful of tables, but the wait usually isn't too bad. The staff were also super friendly and welcoming, which made the experience even better. Japanese comfort food done right. The chicken katsu curry set was easily the star of the table -- crispy cutlet over rice with thick, savory curry that had the perfect balance of sweetness and richness, and it came with a comforting bowl of miso soup. Even with the curry sauce, the katsu stayed crunchy to the last bite. The chicken katsu don brought a softer, homestyle vibe with fluffy egg, onions, and lightly sweet sauce soaking into the rice. Super comforting and satisfying without feeling too heavy. For appetizers, we tried the shrimp & vegetable katsu and the shrimp & oyster katsu. Everything came out hot and freshly fried with a light, crispy coating. The shrimp were juicy with a nice snap, while the oysters were rich and buttery inside with that perfect crunch outside. The miso soup and pickles rounded everything out nicely. If you're craving crispy katsu and hearty Japanese curry, this spot definitely hits the spot.

A friend and I came for dinner and I was surprised to see all the tables full. We were seated at the bar. The service was good, my friend and I were busy chatting and didn't have a chance to look at the menu but the server was kind and gave us a few more minutes to review before coming back for our order. I ordered the chicken katsu curry with rice and my friend ordered the fish katsu with rice. We also got shrimp and oyster katsu appetizer to share. All of our food was excellent. My chicken was crunchy on the outside and tender and juicy on the inside. The shrimp katsu was also cooked perfectly. Really crunchy and not at all dry inside. The curry flavor was great, not too strong. Everything paired so nicely with the Japanese rice. Next time I'd like to try a few more appetizers, so I'm looking forward to coming back soon!

I didn't think I would like this place as much as I did. One of my retired work moms recommended this place and we ate here with another friend on a Monday evening. They open at 5:30pm and we arrived at 5:45pm with only 1-2 tables filled. The place was packed by the time we left at 7! Eats: Takoyaki Popcorn Tofu Tonkatsu set Chicken Katsu Curry Shrimp & Veggie Katsu-Don Nice wait staff. They refill water as needed. The food took a bit longer than expected with the shrimp Katsu arriving first. I found it strange the appetizers arrived after the main entrees. Delicious though! I was so hungry I thought I'd scarf down some crispy tofu and takoyaki first, ended up taking bites between rice with tonkatsu. Omg so I loved the Japanese rice with the tonkatsu! Plus miso soup. Yah, I was uber hungry hahahaaa. I like how the regular tonkatsu meat is so lean but has plenty of meat. Excellent crunch without being so crispy it scrapes your mouth. It was perfect and not overly oily! I almost finished everything, just took home the last piece of pork with rice. I ate all the included cabbage salad with the creamy sesame dressing. My friend's chicken katsu curry was good too, solid Japanese curry. The katsu-don comes with scrambled egg between the rice and katsu. Will definitely come back when it's not busy. The place isn't cramped but it's not the largest either. Parking lot isn't too bad.

Ordered the chicken katsu curry, the chicken was nice and lightly crispy, the curry was lightly spicy but also a bit sweet. It was a bit underflavored and not as concentrated, it could have used more umami condensed deep flavor and even more spice. Service was alright, came with a friend but got asked to sit at a smaller table which was annoying because the restaurant wasn't full on a monday.

Great first-time experience! The chicken katsu-don was delicious, and it's a great spot if you're looking to try something a little different. I'll be sure to try the curry next time.

Katsu Gin is a very popular spot that focuses on crispy cutlets (ands shrimp) served with Japanese curry gravy. It gets very busy, so it helps to arrive early (even bestie they open) unless you are fine with waiting. The demand is high and the food lands well on the mark. The cutlets are satisfying and pair nicely with the curry, making for a solid, comforting meal. The shrimp is also crunchy and tasty. It may be a bit more hyped than it deserves to be, but it is still a place I enjoyed and would come back to.

Experience (5/5 stars): *Food: i'd recommend getting the hirekatsu over the tonkatsu as it was juicier and had better flavor! enjoyed the shredded cabbage salad, miso soup, and pickled sides. *Price: ~$20 katsu sets Overall, it's a yes for me!

Came a few months ago when they had just opened. The pictures looked promising, but we were a bit disappointed. Katsu was really dry and the sauces were just ok. Price and portion are ok, but we probably wouldn't come back. I usually love fried chicken skin, but these were also just ok, not great. We sat at the bar since it was busy, even though we came late at night near closing. Service was kinda slow, we had to ask a few times for water refill.

F O O D * Egg Salad Sando w/ jidori egg ($13): https://tinyurl.com/khwxepnc I liked that the jidori egg was perfectly jammy, but the rest of the sando was underwhelming. The egg salad was bland, and the shokupan wasn't as pillowy soft as I'd expected. Instead, it had a drier texture that felt more like American white bread. * Chicken Katsu Curry Rice ($21.50): https://tinyurl.com/cwedbaze + Add jidori egg ($3) The katsu curry was fine but expensive for the portion. Crunchy and tender, the chicken katsu (thigh meat) sat atop a bed of perfectly cooked rice - soft, chewy, and sticky, yet with each grain still distinct. The curry was plain tasting and I wish it came with some veggies. The onsen egg is a must add for that silky richness. IMO, you can find better katsu curry in the city for the fraction of the cost ($15-$18) at Curry Hyuga, Nippon Curry, Fumi, Volcano Curry, etc. S E R V I C E We ordered for dine in (outside) but they packed our order to go.
