Heard great things so I finally checked it out. My friend and I shared two large size plates of meat: toro cut & mokkoji flat iron. The meal also came with a veggie platter, but choosing broth is extra cost. The meat quality was very good! I loved that even the lean mokkoji flat iron cut was still tender, and the toro was obviously a richer melt-in-your-mouth cut. I enjoyed the ability to do half marinated and half non-marinated meats as well. As for the broth, I had the spicy pork and my friend got the original pork, which each costed $5. This was definitely one of the better shabu broths I've had, although leaning on the salty side. The garlic and pork flavor was really prominent which I enjoyed. We also tried three appetizers: gyoza, takoyaki, and the wings. All were tasty. All the ingredients and food here was overall very fresh! This place is definitely very pricy but don't underestimate how full you'll get. My friend and I ordered two large plates of meat and we only ate about half total. I think two regular cuts shared between two would suffice for the average person. I was able to make another meal out of this. The service was 10/10 very informative, helpful, and attentive. The place is on the smaller side but kept very clean.

Stopped by Mokkoji Shabu Shabu for a quick solo lunch in between errands on a weekday. There was a small line ahead of me but I was seated immediately since it was shared dining tables and I was just a party of 1. Ordered the lunch special flat iron ($25) with spicy miso broth (extra $2). Comes with iced tea, unlimited rice and veggie refills. The meat was really tender and tasty, paired well with the marinade they had. I also liked that the veggie options included bok choy and pumpkin. Service was nice and mostly attentive given how busy they were. Curious of their other broth options but don't love that it costs extra depending on what you order and can get pretty pricey for the portion size if it wasn't for the lunch special.

So happy Mokkoji is finally in the Bay! I no longer need to travel all the way to SoCal to get it. Anticipate a wait since the hype is real. Try and make a reservation if you can or get on the virtual waitlist before you come. I always get the Spicy Pork Bone broth with Beef Belly or Zabuton. Rice, cabbage, and kale are AYCE. Try and get a seat with Nhi if you can. She's the best! Always attentive and great at her job! Five stars all around!

Veggie platter, rice and fire crab broth

Stopped by Mokkoji after a grueling leg day gym sesh. No wait bc we came at 430-5, before dinner rush, on a Wednesday. Thien was our server and he was super nice throughout our time there. We ordered the sampler beef combo for 2: which is 6 slices of all their beef cuts, 2 veggie plates, 2 rice, garlic shrimp app, and 2 drinks and dessert. Thien explained the process of choosing the broths and meat. He thoroughly answered any questions that I had, especially about the yuzu-nade and this unique broth, fire crab. He said fire crab was their original and sukiyaki flavor combined, and included a piece of crab. I had the option of making it spicier, it was like one pot shabu's spicy drops but theirs is ghost pepper. He also asked if we wanted our beef marinated or unmarinated. The marinade has soy, garlicky and green onions. We opted for the marinade. Each meal comes with two sauces -- citrusy ponzu and a sesame sauce, and garnish for them -- green onion, spicy radish and minced garlic I believe...? I think Thien went above and beyond bc there wasn't any signal at the restaurant (att kinda sucks in there), and he offered to hot spot his phone so we could get wifi. Like bruhhh, legit did not have to do that Anyways my fave cut of beef was the toro. That shit fatty and melt in your mouth hahaha. The garlic shrimp was pretty good too, but we didn't finish bc there was sooooo much food. The veggie platter comes with kale, bok choy, tofu, udon, Napa and enoki. I ate like a quarter of that and took the rest home + my broth. We finished all the meat since we didn't wanna leave it uncooked. I also got a raw egg on the side and that was also one of my fave dipping sauces, along with the sesame. Dessert was good but tbh I was sooooo fuckn full, I had to bring it home. I got the corn tamango (fish shaped cone with ice cream inside). Don't knock the flavor till ya try it One of the things I really like about mokkoji is that when they refill your broth, it's ACTUALLY more of their broth and not a basic broth (usually more water or a chicken/beef broth), like a lot of other shabu places have. So it's not watered down. Parking garage shared with the apartments + retail stores and lots of street spots across the street. Next door from the Trader Joe's and orangetheory! Also shout out to Huy for stepping in when Thien was busy

I'm so glad that Mokkoji finally opened in the bay! It was my favorite shabu spot of all time back in socal. I really love the toro and ribeye with marinade, and the spicy pork broth is so good. I especially love the ball of thinly grated radish that you get. The two person deal is definitely worth it since you get a shrimp appetizer, drinks, and ice cream! My only complaint is that the broth quality can be a little inconsistent depending on who makes it, and it has made my stomach slightly upset recently. Other than that, everything else is great and the service here is amazing too.

Get the spicy crab broth! It's sooooo good! I'm drooling thinking about it already. Also never had spicy crab broth at a shabu place. Whoever you are, genius! I got brisket and my friend got toro. We both got large and it was very filling. I tried some of my friend's toro and it was really good and tender! Brisket was a little bit more on the chewy side but I still liked it! Flavor for both meat was also very yummy. Apparently smoked soy sauce garlic and something else, sesame? Definitely will come back for that spicy crab soup, I'm hooked. Update: Went again with my friend and we got the special for 2 deal, the beef sampler. We got to try all the meats! They were all so good but I think the ones that were marbled were the best. Wish they had little signs on them for which one they are. The set comes with sake and garlic shrimp appetizer. Appetizer and the sake was bomb, I usually don't like drinking but this sake was very light and tasty to me. It was the house sake, ozeki? I think I might like drinking sake now. We also got a sweet corn taiyaki ice cream. yum! Service was good, got seated quick on a Tuesday night. Update: Came on a Friday night, it was about an hour wait. I think they close the yelp waitlist when it's too packed, so plan ahead! Our waitress was Nhi, and so far the best! She was very descriptive and attentive to our mokkoji experience. There's a parking garage right next to it. No parking fee. There was a good amount of parking spots when I got in there. It's next to Trader Joe's parking garage.

Mokkoji always hit the spot. On the pricer end but you're paying for the meat quality. Love their broth variety and servers have always been nice and welcoming. I do recommend going on the waitlist bc the wait can be long and it doesn't go by fast sometimes.

I went to Mokkoji after hearing great things about it. The meat here is really good, and honestly, that's the best part of the restaurant. But, sadly, that's where the good stuff ends. The sauces, veggies, and broth weren't quite up to par, in my opinion. The veggie portion was small, and they only offer free refills on certain veggies, not the whole veggie plate. The sauce wasn't as flavorful as I'd hoped, and it was a bit too sweet for my taste. The broth wasn't special either; I got the pork broth and thought it was very basic. I also didn't like the setup; the tables are very tall, and the utensils and fishware set-up was disappointing. Overall, the setup made the experience uncomfortable. I also wanted to mention that I called the restaurant to try and make a reservation for Friday, but they said they don't do reservations and suggested joining the waitlist on Yelp instead. When I tried to join the waitlist, it was closed, and when I walked into the restaurant, they said they keep the waitlist closed on Friday through Sunday. It wasn't a big deal, but it was a little frustrating because I was told something incorrect by someone working there. I also felt it was counterintuitive to keep the waitlist closed on the busiest days. Overall, this is a one-and-done for me, and I probably won't be back.

Came here during weekend lunch and was surprised that there was no wait. There were a lot of broths, meats, and items to choose from so we were glad our server Hilton was able to provide us with great service and help! I ended up getting the spicy pork broth which was excellent and we got the shareable size of the toro and flat iron. The meats were excellent and just enough for 5 people. Will definitely be back to try their other meats!

    Ate everything.

We've hit a few Mokkoji locations by now--including the one in Irvine. The food always delivers. The broth was spot on, ingredients were fresh, and the entire setup was perfectly dialed. What really elevated the experience was our server, Hilton. Sharp, attentive, and ahead of the game the entire night. Outstanding service anchors a great meal. We'll definitely be back.

Large toro + lunch deal flat iron (both marinated)!

We have been to Mokkoji many times, but just now decided that it's time to give an outstanding review for our favorite hotpot place! On a Monday afternoon at around 2, there was no wait for a table of 4. We ordered four lunch specials (super well priced for what it offers) which comes out an order of flat iron, green tea or black tea, vegetable tray, and rice. The flat iron is best marinated! It has sesame oil, minced garlic, and green onions which adds an amazing flavor on top of the good quality meat. My favorite tea is their strawberry green tea, but on some days its wintermelon or watermelon green tea which is just as good! Their rice, bokchoy, cabbage, and kale from the veggie tray are all refillable. What a steal! My personal favorite soup is the fire crab because of its savory spicy flavor. It even comes with a crab leg! Their sukiyaki is also super good and flavorful, it tastes just like a traditional Sukiyaki. Since we have come to Mokkoji several times, we have been served by many amazing servers, but a great one to mention is Thien! He is super attentive and always checking in on us to see if we want refills of our vegetables or rice. Thien always makes sure our orders are perfect, as well as ensuring our experience is good enough to make us want to come back (which it always is)!

Check the restaurant for accurate wait times. I checked Yelp while I was outside the door; it said there was an 80 minute wait. I was seated within 10 minutes of putting my name down for a table of 2. This location is a little different than others. My small table for 2 had two spots for pots whereas the locations I've been to in SoCal shared a pot for the table. The table is a bit big so it might not be the best option for soft spoken people. The food is just as good as the SoCal locations. I got the sampler with fire crab as the soup base. We chose marinated meat. I ended up being so full that I couldn't finish the crab in my soup. I always like to try the meat as is to taste the flavor. I liked the marinated flavor and fire crab flavor so much that I didn't need the dipping sauces.

WHY WE WENT HERE: - dinner THE LOOK (FROM THE OUTSIDE): - located on the corner of McCandless Dr and Market St - free parking garage shared with Trader Joe's, etc. THE LOOK (FROM THE INSIDE): - clean, industrial, floor to ceiling windows for lots of natural sunlight - single person restroom - hot pot warmer plate per person on the tables THE MENU: - just like the server told us, it IS confusing to read; best to decipher with the server explaining it to you - appetizer - choose your broth - shabu selection - special for 2 - add ons - beverages WHAT WE ORDERED: - Special for 2 - miso broth, flat iron "mokkoji cut", veggies, rice, dipping sauces THE TASTE: - the Special for 2 was actually a solid deal; got an appetizer, unlimited rice and veggies, the broth and the meat were very tasty, and we got a drink (sake) CUSTOMER SERVICE: - at the time we arrived, we were the only patrons in the restaurant - even as our dinner was progressing and ended it filled up and there were quite a few people waiting outside to be seated - overall, very prompt, knowledgeable, warm, and welcoming

The interior is beautiful, very Japanese-inspired with a clean mix of modern and rustic design elements. The menu is quite curated, featuring just a few options for main entrees and a select handful of appetizers. We arrived right at opening on a Tuesday night. We skipped the appetizers and were unfortunately told they were already out of Uni, meaning the Matsu bowl wasn't available. We both opted for the Take bowl instead. One major downside for me was the pricing. The bowls are already quite steep, so discovering that you have to pay an additional $4.50 just for the dashi broth felt a bit off-putting. Because of that, we chose to skip the broth altogether. As for the food, the bowl itself was flavorful and the portion size was decent. However, given the price and the massive reputation, it didn't quite meet my expectations and felt a bit underwhelming. I don't think I would return to this location, but it did make me want to travel to Japan to try the original version!

And if some changes are made, it may be better. We ordered the Tonkatsu Curry set, the Kirekatsu set, and the Udon w/ curry set. The commonality of the three dishes were the three huge "bricks" of tonkatsu. Though they were awesomely juicy and had a nice crunch to the coating, they lacked flavor. I believe this is due to the shear size of the tenderloin (each one would constitute one serving of meat.) Even with tonkatsu sauce (very sparsely drizzled), the flavor was lacking. I prefer the bite-sized cuts instead. Perhaps the most frustrating is the weight of each brick made it a challenge to hold with chopsticks (in all fairness, they did provide a fork . . .). And twice I dropped the brick into my bowl of udon, splashing the curry broth everywhere. Grrrrr! The curry had a spicy kick at the start, but then . . . Mixed feelings. Difficult to describe, but it seems that there was an emphasis more on the spiciness, but not much on flavor? For me, the blend was not balanced. That is what each of us felt. The curry sauce for the udon was nice, however and did not overpower the noodles. The highlights were the pickled carrots and scallion bulbs - outstanding! And they were my favorite item of the entire meal! Very crunchy and packed with flavor, the carrots were delicious, and the small scallion bulbs were crunchy and sweet (though a bit too sweet, in my opinion). These veggies are an effective, but effective palette cleanser. Second most-liked was the bowl of shredded cabbage. The sesame miso dressing was very tasty. With the huge amount of cabbage, the dressing was not nearly enough. I suggest cutting back on the amount of cabbage served and keep the amount of dressing as is. If the wait staff see an excessive amount of uneaten cabbage, that may be a sign to cut back on the serving size... The wait staff were friendly and attentive. Kudos here. It is strange that my accolades principally were of the condiments and the salad, and not of the main dishes. The word "proportion" may sum it up succinctly - make the tonkatsu smaller, cut back on the amount of cabbage in the side salad to better balance the dressing with the cabbage. I may come back to try the other offerings if I am in the area again.

A few friends and I was told of this all you can eat sushi place on Calaveras Boulevard closer to Highway 680. It's in a corner shopping center with Starbucks, a dim sum Chinese restaurant, Christie's donuts which is on the corner of Calaveras Boulevard and Park Victoria. First impression: It's clean and can certainly accommodate large parties as I have seen parties up to 20 people celebrating a birthday as well as tables and booths occupied by couples and small groups. It's a no nonsense ordering system that you have choices of regular menu or premium menu. Premium items are highlighted in red. The difference is only $5.00 so I suggest people get the premium menu so the entire menu is all offered. Honestly, I think I've been there about five times and right now, I think I have enjoyed 80% of the menu items right now. The staff are very swift and friendly. They even fill your water glasses constantly. I believe we can order three or four items at a time and I'm told at about 10 minute intervals. I remember a waitress said that they're not allowed to enter an order until 10 minutes have pashe'd, but that has never been a problem as by the time the first set of food arrives. you are enjoying the yummy plates/bowls as well the company of friends and/orfamily. Although it's all you can eat, I appreciate that the portions are not extremely large so you can order multiples and each time food comes out fresh, newly fried, newly baked, newly made or simply newly created. My favorites are the Age-dashintofu, salmon carpaccio, shrimp tempura, UnagI-Don, island hand roll, karage chicken, smoke salmon, veggie tempura, and many of the maki rolls. I have tasted and likely would not order the udon soup because it was extra salty. Also, I don't order steam rice as rice can be a stomach filler. (I'm ok with the rice from the rolls and unagi-Don mini bowls) However, the fried rice is pretty good, but have to add a few drops of soy sauce. My friends who loves seafood, love the grilled mackerel (saba shioyaki) baked mussels and fried softshell crab, as well as squid and mushroom mini salad and maki rolls such as Godzilla roll, double salmon roll, crunch roll, dynamite roll, Milpitas roll plus a dozen more. The simple, no nonsense dessert of mochi ice cream is the perfect ending. It's usually a choice between green tea Mochi ice cream scoop and mango Moch ice cream scoop. They also offer sake, Japanese beer, Japanese soda, regular soda, as well as iced tea, lemonade, Arnold Palmers, and probably more I have not mentioned. I do wish they offer seasonal or special items (not on the menu), like mini ramen bowls or mini curry rice bowls. if specials are offered, it can be an extra menu card or staff can mention the specials when they take your order. Btw the QR code on table doesn't work, but that's fine with me bc I enjoy the interaction, plus I don't want to flip from eating then grabbing my cell phone to scroll. So far so good, everyone I have brought here or recommended to this place is/are happy and very pleased. Can't wait to go back to Okawa soon.

My friends and I were craving sushi, so we decided to try Okawa Sushi for the first time. When we…read moregot there, it was not busy at all and we were seated right away. The restaurant was nice and open with good lighting over our tables. We started ordering a bunch of nigiri, soft shell crab, a couple sushi rolls, and some appetizers. The food came out relatively fast and I liked that we could continuously order more sushi through our phone. One thing I noticed was that they had a chef's choice sashimi option on the menu, but it was not available on the app, so you have to order that directly through the waiter. The waiters were attentive and we were able to flag them down when we had questions. Overall, I thought the fish was pretty fresh. Compared to some other newer all you can eat sushi spots, the rice portions were a bit larger, but I still enjoyed the meal. I just wish they had scallops on the menu. Overall, a good sushi spot in the San Jose area.
