Came here with the wife around 7:45pm on a Friday. It was pretty empty, but I'm not complaining. It's tucked away on the side of a strip mall. Plenty of parking. We ordered 4 rolls and a chicken katsu bento. The rolls were all pretty good. They were a pretty generous size too. Flavor was good, but I wouldn't call any of them premium. For the price and the size, I expected good not great, and that's exactly what we got. The katsu also was pretty good. Good enough to order again at least. Had some money on Grubhub and decided to get some sushi. I can't comment on the service or ambiance as someone else picked it up for me, but in comparison to other places I've been the food seemed a little small portion-wise. I'm not really blaming them for this though, as this is something that seems to occur a lot in other sushi places. The sushi itself was alright, though there are probably better places to get it. We got the Nigiri Combo with a piece of salmon and tuna sashimi, which came in its own little box. Both of them were relatively decent, though I'm not entirely sure if that one, singular bit of sashimi is worth three dollars. Each piece of nigiri also came with a dollop of wasabi alongside the regular wasabi that's added to the side, which added a nice bit of spice to it. Overall, a relatively decent experience. My favorite go to spot for fresh and affordable sushi! There's not many sushi spots around ESSJ so I was excited to see one open after trying their other chain restaurant in Milpitas. The service is fast and easy, they give you a menu full of extensive items that you can choose from. My favorite rolls are the Gajin and the hand rolls! The restaurant is fairly small. But could accommodate a few parties of 6 or more. House Christian music playing throughout the place. Only one unisex restroom. My mom ordered the beef short rib. A good portion of ribs. Tender and fatty. I added a California Roll +$4. They have a decent food list to add on to your bento for varying prices. The California Roll was good. The crab mix had some black pepper in it. They have a lot of different rolls to choose from raw to non-raw rolls. Kakuna Roll: Crab, spicy tuna, fried onion, torched salmon, spicy mayo, miso, unagi sauce, scallions, tobiko (3.5/5). This was recommended by our waiter. It was good but too saucy. Went to Kakuna Sushi for dinner on a weeknight. I haven't been here in a while--last time was just for takeout. They've since renovated and expanded into the space next door, so there's a lot more seating now. It was really busy, with lots of families and big groups, but we were still seated right away. The space is definitely great for larger parties. That said, the room was really echoey, which dulled the overall dining experience. We ordered the Lion King, Skittles, and 49ers rolls--Skittles was my favorite! I also got the Nigiri Moriawase for myself, and my boyfriend and I shared the rolls. The nigiri had a great variety (tuna, shrimp, salmon, unagi), and for around $25, it was a great value. The fish cuts were thick and fresh, and there wasn't too much rice, which I appreciated. One small downside was that our food came out spaced apart--we got the Lion King roll first, but had to wait quite a while before the other two rolls came out. It broke up the flow of the meal a bit, especially since we were sharing. I've always liked how affordable the rolls are at Kakuna, and the menu has a really solid variety for both sushi lovers and those who want cooked items. I first went to their Fremont location, and I'm happy to see they've expanded. I wanted some sushi for lunch because of the warm weather and Kakuna Sushi popped up close by. I saw that the prices were very affordable at around $12-$16 for rolls - most places are upwards of $16-$20 now. We ordered the Cherry Blossom Roll and the Crunchy Mango Roll then added a vegetable tempura appetizer. Both rolls were pretty good! The quality of fish isn't going to be amazing like those at a higher end sushi place but is on par with others that charge more for the same thing. The vegetable tempura doesn't have much variety - only broccolini and sweet potato - but it was fried to perfection. There was only 1 server (other server was busy w/ to-go orders) with the place at 70% capacity so there were a few tables that weren't cleaned up. The server did a great job giving attention to all the tables that had customers while trying to clear the other tables.
