We hadn't even been seated yet and were already met with rude service. We asked for a table for five and could clearly see an open table where an extra chair could easily be added. However, one staff member told us they didn't have any chairs available. Fine -- we accepted that. The meat in the pork belly bao is incredibly tender and the brown buns have a perfect crisp. This appetizer comes with these crispy things (idk not fried onions) and shredded cabbage underneath. There's a bit of thick sesame sauce on the inside of the buns which adds a sweet and nutty flavor. The escolar (butterfish) nigiri is pretty big and already comes with a tiny dollop of wasabi with green onion sauce on top. We got the Nigiri Combo with a piece of salmon and tuna sashimi, which came in its own little box. Both of them were relatively decent, though I'm not entirely sure if that one, singular bit of sashimi is worth three dollars. Went to Kakuna Sushi for dinner on a weeknight. I haven't been here in a while--last time was just for takeout. They've since renovated and expanded into the space next door, so there's a lot more seating now. It was really busy, with lots of families and big groups, but we were still seated right away. We ordered the Lion King, Skittles, and 49ers rolls--Skittles was my favorite! I also got the Nigiri Moriawase for myself, and my boyfriend and I shared the rolls. The nigiri had a great variety (tuna, shrimp, salmon, unagi), and for around $25, it was a great value. The fish cuts were thick and fresh, and there wasn't too much rice, which I appreciated. One small downside was that our food came out spaced apart--we got the Lion King roll first, but had to wait quite a while before the other two rolls came out. I saw that the prices were very affordable at around $12-$16 for rolls - most places are upwards of $16-$20 now. We ordered the Cherry Blossom Roll and the Crunchy Mango Roll then added a vegetable tempura appetizer. Both rolls were pretty good! The quality of fish isn't going to be amazing like those at a higher end sushi place but is on par with others that charge more for the same thing. The vegetable tempura doesn't have much variety - only broccolini and sweet potato - but it was fried to perfection. There was only 1 server (other server was busy w/ to-go orders) with the place at 70% capacity so there were a few tables that weren't cleaned up. I love that it is slowly expanding throughout the South Bay and is open longer than most Japanese restaurants traditionally are, which is what caused my friend and I to visit in the first place (we didn't want to inconvenience the workers of a place that would close within 30 minutes of us arriving). My friend and I came on a Sunday around 7:30 PM and we waited for around 20 minutes before being seated. He ordered takoyaki, tuna rolls, the caterpillar rolls, and we split the Sashimi Deluxe while I got two pieces of salmon belly nigiri. The Sashimi Deluxe can be worth your while depending on what you're feeling. There's not a lot of variety in what Kakuna offers in the box (generally the same 3-4 types of fish), but it's definitely a feast with your eyes and your mouth type situation where the cuts are both plentiful and plated in an aesthetically pleasing fashion. Very filling and yummy, they rest on a bed of shredded radish and cabbage leaves with cherry tomatoes.
