I bet everyone saw Rice Junky Katsu all over Instagram during their grand opening with that huge cashback promo back in March. It definitely caught my attention, but I'm not the type to wait 2-3 hours for a newly opened restaurant, so I gave it a couple months for the hype to die down before finally visiting. Also... they were running a $1 cocktail promo, so perfect timing lol. I came for an early weekday dinner and it was pretty quiet. The restaurant isn't huge, maybe around 30-40 seats, but there's a spacious parking lot nearby. Service was honestly great! Our server was super sweet, explained the menu, recommended a few specialties, and checked on us throughout the meal. We ordered the KFC, Premium Top Loin Katsu, Mini Beef Brisket Bibim Pasta, Mini Tteokbokki with Fishcake, Seoul Mojito, and Seoul Night Float. For $1, the cocktails were surprisingly well made, especially the Seoul Night Float--sweet, creamy, refreshing, with just enough soju to give you a little buzz. Surprisingly, my favorite wasn't even the katsu. The Beef Brisket Bibim Pasta was SO good, especially for summer. Cold, chewy noodles covered in a sweet and spicy sauce, crunchy cabbage, and perfectly sliced beef brisket in every bite. The KFC and tteokbokki were also packed with flavor and more filling than they looked. The katsu itself was good, but a little bland for my personal taste even with the different sauces and seasonings. I actually enjoyed all the fresh banchan more lol. The whole set was very filling though, and I ended up taking leftovers home. Overall, such a pleasant experience at Rice Junky Katsu. We were still interested and took a seat. Our initial plan was to order some lighter bites as all of us weren't super hungry. * Seoul Classic Pork Cutlet $18.99 - The Little Guy ordered this and let's just say the pork cutlet is HUGE! It's smothered with brown gravy, and comes with rice, salad, and macaroni salad. 4/5 * Korean Beef Tartare $19 - Noted on the menu as "new", I was curious about it. It was described as served a crunchy rice cracker and served alongside tortilla chips. However, my order did not have any such rice cracker. I asked about it and they said they no longer serve it with the rice cracker but just with the tortilla chips. I was a bit bummed about that part. It was still good, and they did offer more tortilla chips though when they noticed we were running low. They just have to update their menu accordingly or let you know when ordering. 4/5 * Gyukatsu (Beef Cutlet) $41 - This is really their clear winner and specialty dish! It started with Corn Soup with Basil Oil, which was a nice surprise. They then proceeded to place a cooking apparatus on our table, and we had to ask what it was for. They let us know it was for the Gyukatsu set! The breaded beef cutlet is served raw, and you cook it up to your liking tableside! It's served with wasabi, which is really the way to eat beef as I eat steak with wasabi at home. It came with a few banchan dishes too. This was a very enjoyable dish and our absolute favorite of the evening. 5/5 * Red Bean Mochi - The staff were very kind and gave us complimentary dessert as well. Overall, Rice Junky Katsu was an enjoyable meal for us. Their specialty is obviously Korean katsu dishes, and I would return to enjoy more of it. The service was great, even though we came in 30mintues before closing, we saw a group of young people come in closer to 10minutes before closing but the owner still sat them down and served them with great service! The gravy was a mixture of spices and vinegar taste. It would have been nice to have the gravy on the side because it was a lot at times. Newest katsu spot in the Bay Area! Rice Junky just rebranded their restaurant on N First St into a specialty spot featuring different kinds of katsu dishes. We tried two kinds: King Tiger Prawn and Premium Top Loin. The shrimp was huge and fried perfectly, and it paired really well with the red curry sauce. The pork was super tender, and the wasabi sauce on the side was a really nice touch. Both dishes were beautifully presented and served with a banchan set. It's not refillable, but every item was very tasty. I also highly recommend their spicy beef brisket cold pasta!! It was so refreshing, and the noodle texture was spot on. Perfect for this weather~ Their service is very friendly and the price is reasonable. You can make reservations through their Yelp page, but walk-ins are welcome too. I know there was a Rice Junky open somewhere in SJ but never got the chance to try it so was glad to see they opened a new one which seemed to be a little more contemporary menu and higher scale based. You can miss the restaurant as it's on a busy street with the parking lot on the side including the street parking. The windows are kind dark to see through as the blinds were down because the store does face the sun, so when we walked by we originally thought it was closed. It is a very intimate restaurant but nonetheless a bunch of seating inside. Menu is quite short and sweet but we ordered one of the Katsu sets and the Shrimp Katsu. I would say that the shrimp katsu was on the bit pricer side and I would probably pass on it and stick with the chicken/pork options. They also have a spicy noodle challenge for any contender to take on which I thought that was fun as there was a pair of guys that decided to try it. Service itself was great. Yum! I really enjoyed my dinner. I came for dinner, party of 2, on a Thursday night. Not many people in the restaurant at that time, maybe 2 additional tables. The restaurant was clean, the service was great; we were served by a kind lady. The food was yummy and filling. To drink, we ordered makgeolli, this was bigger than I expected and the yuza yakult makgeolli; delicious. For dinner we had the KFC, my husband thought the crust was a little to thick for his liking and Cheese katsu. All the side dishes were delicious and we appreciated how the server informed us about each side dish. I have recently been on a katsu kick and was please to find out that there was a new restaurant that popped up. My husband and I stopped by around 5:30pm on a Saturday. The private parking lot was cracking and the restaurant looked really busy, but luckily we were able to get a table for 2 without waiting. I remember Doordashing from Rice Junky when it was focused on street food. One of the servers explained that they still have the same owners but were offering a different cuisine concept. In addition to katsu sets, I saw that Rice Junky still offered unique dishes and snacks. We shared an order of the brisket cold noodles and the gyukatsu (beef cutlet). The brisket cold noodles dish was tasty. It consisted of thin rice noodles and thinly sliced vegetables, making it also very refreshing. My only complaint was that I wish it had more slices of brisket. Rice Junky's gyukatsu is nothing like the gyukatsu I've had in Japan, which is honestly better, but I would still eat Rice Junky's. I felt like the pieces were too thick, so they didn't sear quickly. Also Rice Junky's beef cutlet wasn't seasoned. In Japan, they give you salt and sauces to dress up the meat. I did enjoy a couple of banchan in the set. The creamy mushroom sauce was the best. It was so good that I used it as the sauce to dip the meat. I was also a big fan of the salmon slices with pesto. If you're a big eater, portion size could be a bit small. But it's a decent portion overall. We came during their 50% promo but still found it pretty pricey. The menu was a bit confusing, but the price you see is the price you pay. It's pretty pricey if regular price is $52 for the Tenderloin Katsu ($26 promo) and $39 ($19 promo) for the Katsu Cutlet. So, this is a pretty interesting review for me to write as there was definitely an incident that happened which was very unfortunate, however the staff was severely apologetic and ended up comp'ing the meal.. I can't fully place blame on the restaurant and can say that I thoroughly enjoyed what I ate. The presentation was great and the side dishes were very delicious. The mushroom soup in particular was very flavorful. The coleslaw that was on the main plate was also quite refreshing.. and had a little bit of spice to it which was unexpected. Potato salad was sweet and balanced. House made kimchi had a nice bite to it and wasn't too spicy. Pickled Jalapenos and cucumber were a nice palette cleanser. The braised pork and quail egg wasn't overwhelming and was unexpectedly cold. The pork tenderloin itself was cooked nicely and I thought was cooked well. I wasn't concerned about it being a little pink in the center as that's fine for pork. Did like the sauce they served with it, though probably could used a little more of it. As far as the unfortunate incident.. it didn't happen to me specifically, but it was something that made my gf lose her appetite. Ended up just getting her food to-go. I honestly don't want to divulge details because things were taken care of and I highly doubt it would be a concern for anyone else. On February 28, we sampled several dishes, including octopus katsu, Seoul classic pork cutlet, crispy pork belly, and possibly pork tenderloin katsu, among others (though I can't recall all the dishes). As it was my first experience at this venue, I was impressed by both the food and the ambiance. The setting was quite pleasant, even considering the limited space, and I believe they might benefit from expansion in the future. We also enjoyed Cass beer and soju, indulging in some soju bombs. On March 4, we took advantage of a $20 off coupon offered for large groups during the grand opening, which we applied to my birthday meal. The service was exceptional; the staff checked on us frequently, which I greatly appreciated. I ordered the king tiger prawn katsu, and the waiter even brought out the uncooked prawn to show me its size before serving the cooked dish. It was absolutely delicious, and I would certainly return for it again in the near future. The katsu here is by far the most tender in the bay! We stopped by for soft-opening with some friends who were visiting. My husband and I got the pork tenderloin katsu and the Seoul classic pork cutlet. We tried a bit of the cheese katsu that our friend ordered. All of the dishes were made very well and quickly became my husband's favorite katsu place. The only thing is that we have had better sauce elsewhere but it was still good. My group of 5 came by Rice Junky Katsu during their soft opening week at 7pm, and ended up waiting 2 hours to be one of the last parties seated (their hours end at 9pm). There's a small parking lot in the back, but it was full and we all ended up parking somewhere on the street behind the lot. Once we got inside, it was a mix of a dark, club style ambiance with slightly more modern upscale decor. Someone was doing the spicy katsu challenge before we were able to place our order and the whole place basically stopped with dedicated lighting, music, and MCing for the challenge. It's definitely quite loud inside, and we were barely able to hear each other at the table throughout the meal. Most of our dishes came with a side of rice, and strangely enough we were given these bowls of rice almost immediately after ordering, about 30 minutes before our food actually came out? -tenderloin katsu: this comes in a box set, which was pretty to look at but did take up quite a lot of space on the table - the small dishes were nothing too special; i liked the potato salad and always appreciate kimchi (tho there wasnt much of either). It also came with a ?mushroom cream soup which all of us felt tasted a little strange and didn't go with the rest of the set, and some wontons that I'm pretty sure are the same Bibigo cilantro wontons you can buy at Costco. Regardless, the katsu itself was a generous portion, crispy without being too oily or heavy, and not dry. I will say the tenderloin cut was a little unexpected, so it felt like more meat than if it was a thin katsu cut. We put our name down, and the worker let us know that he would text us about 10 min before our table would be ready, and let us know it should take about 1 hour for a table to open up for us. We were able to get seated after waiting a little over an hour, but unfortunately for me, they were already out of the pork loin katsu, which is the one I wanted to try. We ordered the tenderloin katsu, Seoul classic katsu (both of which were 50% off), and the crispy pork belly to share. The crispy pork belly came with huge pieces of crispy pork, but the star for me was the papaya geotjeori. It had a really similar taste to som tum, but with a slight Korean twist, and I loved how fresh it tasted with the pork belly. Both katsus came out at the same time, with the tenderloin coming out in a cute bento box. Each katsu came with a variety of sides like rice, salad, marinated jalapenos, mini dumplings, mushroom soup, etc. The tenderloin was extremely tender and juicy, although I do wish there had been some salt and wasabi to go with it. That's my fave combo! The sauce for the Seoul classic katsu was nostalgic, with the perfect balance of tang and savory. We cleared everything! Parking seems to be a struggle since there was a huge influx of people from the soft-opening special. I was lucky enough to grab a spot right away, but there were a lot of other cars circling or waiting with their hazards on. When we arrived around 5 it was already a long waitlist. We waited about 1.5 hours just to be seated, and while I understand they're in their soft opening phase, the crowd control definitely needs work. Service was okay, but we had to flag our servers down multiple times for basic things like utensils and napkins. It was hard to get their attention since most of the staff were chatting behind the cashier area instead of checking on tables. As for the food, the presentation and side dishes showed effort, but the katsu itself fell short. The pork tenderloin wasn't tender, and the chicken katsu sauce was overly sweet to the point of being a little sickening. Overall, the dishes looked better than they tasted. On a positive note, they were offering a 50% off promotion, so our three entrées ended up being about $40 total with tax and tip, which softened the blow a bit. I know they're still in their soft opening, so hopefully they can tighten up their operations, improve the seasoning and textures, and provide better crowd control. We just got back from Tokyo so I think she was remembering how tender the kurobuta pork katsu we got were. I difference in the quality of the product shows. Not saying Rice Junky's quality was bad, it was just how high quality of a product we got in Tokyo was. I'd definitely come back for this dish though. I think it's one of the best katsu's I've had in the Bay Area. Last out was the Crispy Pork Belly. I wanted to get the Tteokbokki with House Made Fish Cakes, but they ran out of the fish cakes. :-( This was an ok dish. The pork belly was a bit to crispy and hard. We had it as a left over the next day it was actually better to us. The flavor of salad worked well with the pork belly. Overall it was good, but not perfect. We'll be back to try some of their other dishes when they've worked out their service. read more

Came here for a late evening meal. And it went pretty well - keeping in mind the fact that it's a soft opening. I showed up at 730 and was seated around 9, though again, it was pretty expected since it's still the soft opening phase. The restaurant was completely full, and orders were coming out frequently. The restaurant itself is pretty small on the inside, so the line moved pretty quickly. I ordered the clam soup and the gyu katsu. The clam soup was VERY good. The broth was garlicky and buttery and it was loaded with clams and mussels. It was definitely a tasty dish. I also ordered the GyuKatsu, which was the main reason I went. It was a good sized portion, came with a good amount of bonchon and was just a really good dish, close to the Gyu Katsu I had in Japan. The only difference really was the wasabi you get in Japan vs the wasabi sauce you get here. Service wise, everything went super well. Even though they close at 9, they honored anyone that had put their name on the wait list and still served everyone, even though it meant the restaurant stayed open an hour past their closing time. All in all, a good experience and I will definitely be coming back to try all the different katsu options they have. read more

I ordered the tteokbokki and the pork tenderloin katsu. The tteokbokki was pretty good. The fish cakes with the spicy sauce were good and in the tteokbokki, there were rice cakes and gnocchis. The pork tenderloin katsu was also pretty good. I didn't expect it to be as tender as it was. The meat was also pretty big; the slices are thick. There were also extra things added like the gyoza (I think), kimchi, cucumber salad, macaroni salad, and some sort of cream soup (bottom right). Everything tasted very good. The service was kind of slow though b/c it was a soft opening but they were very apologetic about it. Overall, this is pretty good and a good place to bring a date. read more

Love a good deal! Checked out the soft opening deal of 50% off 6 different entrees, till Feb 28, for Classic Pork Cutlet, Pork Loin, Pork Tenderloin, Beef, Chicken and Cheese Katsu. I love that the katsu were crispy and juicy and really affordable right now. Service was a little slow during soft opening but I appreciated the freshly fried pork katsu. The Seoul classic pork cutlet was my favorite. It has the biggest pieces of pork and best flavors in the meat and sauces. However, the classic pork cutlet does not come with the side dishes. Love the casual and modern vibes to this spot! Great for having some drinks and katsu. read more

Incredible pork katsu! + 50% of promo rn which makes it so worth it. I do wish there was one more pork piece for it to be more filling. Delicious sides as well!! Definitely will return for this deal and katsu. The gyukatsu (beef) was unfortunately very overcooked (in my image, that was actually the only pink or red beef piece) leaving the hot sizzling plate kinda useless as I didn't want it cooked anymore. It was a v pricy item so thought it'd be worth to splurge on but was quite disappointed at it! The restaurant itself was super ambient and loved how they renovated it! The food did take a while but that was expected during soft opening:) service was also nice! Update: came again a second time in the evening. Nobody answered the phone so was unable to communicate :/ after driving 30+ minutes, they said they were not taking anymore on the waitlist. First time to come check out the hype. They have a spicy katsu challenge for free drink forever. Didn't take the challenge. But I'm curious what the free drink is. Very spacious inside. Service was definitely good. We tried 3 different katsu. They all come with side dishes. I was told the Seoul classic one doesn't come with the side dishes. The tenderloin is definitely leaner than the premium loin. Food is decent. Good place if you are craving for katsu. read more

you're looking for high-quality Korean-style pork cutlet (Donkatsu) near the San Jose airport, this is a must-visit. The location is super convenient, especially since there is a dedicated parking lot right next door--a rare find in this area! The menu is wonderfully curated and focused, which I love. I went with the Pork Loin Katsu, and the quality of the meat was incredible. It was impressively tender and juicy, with that signature light, golden-brown breading. While it comes with a flavorful Korean dipping sauce, do yourself a favor and try it with the wasabi and salt first. It's a game-changer that really highlights the premium quality of the pork! Another surprise highlight? The mushroom soup. It was absolutely outstanding--creamy, savory, and the perfect starter. Our entire party of seven finished every drop, which says it all. Since it seems to be a newer spot, there were some minor efficiency hiccups. Our large group had to wait a bit for all the dishes to come out together, and we ran low on napkins/tissues at the table. However, the staff was incredibly polite and welcoming, which made the wait feel much shorter. For the reasonable price and the sheer quality of the food, I'll definitely be back. After watching the food on instagram, we looked forward to try this restaurant. We ordered chicken katsu, cheese katsu, pork tenderloin katsu and a side order of pork belly with shredded papaya. Out from all the dishes, i personally like the pork belly the best. The katsu was ok. It was interesting that the breading for the pork tenderloin katsu was different than the breading of the chicken katsu. The meal came in a wooden box with little serving of seaweed salad, pickled cucumber jalapeño, mushroom soup, kimchi and one other thing i could not identify (if i had to guess, i would say pork with preserved vegetables). The meal also came with a bowl of rice. Unfortunately, the inside of the katsu was dried. I have better katsu elsewhere so i don't think i will be back. Service was very good though. read more

Rice Junky Katsu is a new Korean katsu specialized place in San Jose. It features 8 types of katsu meal, of which we tried: - Pork tenderloin katsu + banchan tray set ($25): breaded tenderloin katsu with cabbage salad. Tenderloin was a bit hard to chew, and not really tender at all. Banchan was generous, with stewed ribs, kimchi, pickled cucumber (2 styles), and potatoes salad. - Gyukatsu + premium banchan tray set ($41): breaded beef cutlet with cabbage salad, served likely raw with a grilled pan and butter for you to cook it yourself. Beef texture was also not really tender, maybe because they chose the very lean part of the beef. Banchan was similar, had kimchi, pickled cucumber (2 styles), potatoes salad but added 2 premium dishes - shrimp ceviche and smoked salmon. They also have some side dish options on their menu, of which we had the soy marinated salmon ($19). It was surprisingly my most favorite dish. The salmon was very savory, served with wasabi mayo and onions and went really well with white rice. Super addicting! This experience was not impressive enough, but I still want to go back and try the king tiger prawn katsu. Hopefully it will be better next time! read more

Got dinner and wow the food was so good! I got the cheese and pork tonkatsu and I was expecting to burn my tongue honestly but I didn't!! It was the perfect texture. The cheese didn't harden while I ate and I do eat kinda slow. My partner got the Korean fried chicken one which was yummy but I'm not a fan of ginger flavors so I didn't eat much of it (I think in the sauce??) I will say though that their music was a little too loud. It made it hard to hear the other people talking. read more
