We really enjoyed Rice Junky Katsu, the food was so good! We went on a Friday for lunch and it was nice. The parking is on the side or street parking is available. The Seoul classic pork cutlet was so wonderful! The pork cutlet was juicy, crispy, and so huge! It went really well with the macaroni side, balls of rice, and side of cabbage. The gravy was a mixture of spices and vinegar taste. It would have been nice to have the gravy on the side because it was a lot at times. The Korean fried chicken was really crispy also and the sauce was sweet and tangy. The side dishes were a nice touch too with a good amount of spiciness and refreshing flavor. Then, the crispy tonkatsu and kimchi bbq hot pot rice bowl also included the fried pork cutlet with rice. The rice was drown by the sauce and it felt like a bit much at times. The staff were super friendly and so sweet. The waitress kept checking in on us and was so attentive. It was such a pleasant lunch and we're excited to go again in the future. read more

Newest katsu spot in the Bay Area! Rice Junky just rebranded their restaurant on N First St into a specialty spot featuring different kinds of katsu dishes. We tried two kinds: King Tiger Prawn and Premium Top Loin. The shrimp was huge and fried perfectly, and it paired really well with the red curry sauce. The pork was super tender, and the wasabi sauce on the side was a really nice touch. Both dishes were beautifully presented and served with a banchan set. It's not refillable, but every item was very tasty. I also highly recommend their spicy beef brisket cold pasta!! It was so refreshing, and the noodle texture was spot on. Perfect for this weather~ Their service is very friendly and the price is reasonable. You can make reservations through their Yelp page, but walk-ins are welcome too. The staff was really friendly and the service was good. There is little parking in the front but there's a parking lot in the back. The interior was modern and had a decent amount of seating. The food didn't take too long to come out either. The tteokbokki was a different shape and smaller than the typical ones but it was still enjoyable. The gyukatsu was my favorite and was solid. You cook it yourself and it reminded me of Japan. The pork tenderloin was a little dry. I appreciated the variety of side dishes that came with the set. Yum! I really enjoyed my dinner. I came for dinner, party of 2, on a Thursday night. Not many people in the restaurant at that time, maybe 2 additional tables. The restaurant was clean, the service was great; we were served by a kind lady. The food was yummy and filling. To drink, we ordered makgeolli, this was bigger than I expected and the yuza yakult makgeolli; delicious. For dinner we had the KFC, my husband thought the crust was a little to thick for his liking and Cheese katsu. All the side dishes were delicious and we appreciated how the server informed us about each side dish. It features 8 types of katsu meal, of which we tried: - Pork tenderloin katsu + banchan tray set ($25): breaded tenderloin katsu with cabbage salad. Tenderloin was a bit hard to chew, and not really tender at all. Banchan was generous, with stewed ribs, kimchi, pickled cucumber (2 styles), and potatoes salad. - Gyukatsu + premium banchan tray set ($41): breaded beef cutlet with cabbage salad, served likely raw with a grilled pan and butter for you to cook it yourself. Beef texture was also not really tender, maybe because they chose the very lean part of the beef. Banchan was similar, had kimchi, pickled cucumber (2 styles), potatoes salad but added 2 premium dishes - shrimp ceviche and smoked salmon. They also have some side dish options on their menu, of which we had the soy marinated salmon ($19). It was surprisingly my most favorite dish. The salmon was very savory, served with wasabi mayo and onions and went really well with white rice. Super addicting! Service is great here! They're attentive and checked in multiple times to make sure we had everything we needed. We got the perilla noodles, pork katsu, gyukatsu, and 2 cocktails. Saw a lot of buzz on social media about Rice Junky has a new location opening, so we waited for a few weeks for the traffic to die down. Went there on a weekday at noon and there weren't yet a lot of customers, the place is very nicely decorated and it has a Korean nightclub vibe, the staffs are very friendly and fun to chat with. We ordered a couple sides with one Pork Katsu plate, they all came quickly and the Katsu is HUGE! so if you go with a couple of friends, it's probably a good idea just to share one Katsu or you'll bring a togo bag with you when you are done eating. I know there was a Rice Junky open somewhere in SJ but never got the chance to try it so was glad to see they opened a new one which seemed to be a little more contemporary menu and higher scale based. You can miss the restaurant as it's on a busy street with the parking lot on the side including the street parking. The windows are kind dark to see through as the blinds were down because the store does face the sun, so when we walked by we originally thought it was closed. It is a very intimate restaurant but nonetheless a bunch of seating inside. Menu is quite short and sweet but we ordered one of the Katsu sets and the Shrimp Katsu. I would say that the shrimp katsu was on the bit pricer side and I would probably pass on it and stick with the chicken/pork options. They also have a spicy noodle challenge for any contender to take on which I thought that was fun as there was a pair of guys that decided to try it. Service itself was great. I have recently been on a katsu kick and was please to find out that there was a new restaurant that popped up. My husband and I stopped by around 5:30pm on a Saturday. The private parking lot was cracking and the restaurant looked really busy, but luckily we were able to get a table for 2 without waiting. I remember Doordashing from Rice Junky when it was focused on street food. One of the servers explained that they still have the same owners but were offering a different cuisine concept. In addition to katsu sets, I saw that Rice Junky still offered unique dishes and snacks. We shared an order of the brisket cold noodles and the gyukatsu (beef cutlet). The brisket cold noodles dish was tasty. It consisted of thin rice noodles and thinly sliced vegetables, making it also very refreshing. My only complaint was that I wish it had more slices of brisket. Rice Junky's gyukatsu is nothing like the gyukatsu I've had in Japan, which is honestly better, but I would still eat Rice Junky's. I felt like the pieces were too thick, so they didn't sear quickly. Also Rice Junky's beef cutlet wasn't seasoned. In Japan, they give you salt and sauces to dress up the meat. I did enjoy a couple of banchan in the set. The creamy mushroom sauce was the best. It was so good that I used it as the sauce to dip the meat. I was also a big fan of the salmon slices with pesto. If you're a big eater, portion size could be a bit small. But it's a decent portion overall. We came during their 50% promo but still found it pretty pricey. The menu was a bit confusing, but the price you see is the price you pay. It's pretty pricey if regular price is $52 for the Tenderloin Katsu ($26 promo) and $39 ($19 promo) for the Katsu Cutlet. So, this is a pretty interesting review for me to write as there was definitely an incident that happened which was very unfortunate, however the staff was severely apologetic and ended up comp'ing the meal.. I can't fully place blame on the restaurant and can say that I thoroughly enjoyed what I ate. The presentation was great and the side dishes were very delicious. The mushroom soup in particular was very flavorful. The coleslaw that was on the main plate was also quite refreshing.. and had a little bit of spice to it which was unexpected. Potato salad was sweet and balanced. House made kimchi had a nice bite to it and wasn't too spicy. Pickled Jalapenos and cucumber were a nice palette cleanser. The braised pork and quail egg wasn't overwhelming and was unexpectedly cold. The pork tenderloin itself was cooked nicely and I thought was cooked well. I wasn't concerned about it being a little pink in the center as that's fine for pork. Did like the sauce they served with it, though probably could used a little more of it. As far as the unfortunate incident.. it didn't happen to me specifically, but it was something that made my gf lose her appetite. Ended up just getting her food to-go. I honestly don't want to divulge details because things were taken care of and I highly doubt it would be a concern for anyone else. On February 28, we sampled several dishes, including octopus katsu, Seoul classic pork cutlet, crispy pork belly, and possibly pork tenderloin katsu, among others (though I can't recall all the dishes). As it was my first experience at this venue, I was impressed by both the food and the ambiance. The setting was quite pleasant, even considering the limited space, and I believe they might benefit from expansion in the future. We also enjoyed Cass beer and soju, indulging in some soju bombs. On March 4, we took advantage of a $20 off coupon offered for large groups during the grand opening, which we applied to my birthday meal. The service was exceptional; the staff checked on us frequently, which I greatly appreciated. I ordered the king tiger prawn katsu, and the waiter even brought out the uncooked prawn to show me its size before serving the cooked dish. It was absolutely delicious, and I would certainly return for it again in the near future. Additionally, my boyfriend and friend are eager to participate in the "U die, me die" challenge, which adds to my excitement about returning! The katsu here is by far the most tender in the bay! We stopped by for soft-opening with some friends who were visiting. My husband and I got the pork tenderloin katsu and the Seoul classic pork cutlet. We tried a bit of the cheese katsu that our friend ordered. My group of 5 came by Rice Junky Katsu during their soft opening week at 7pm, and ended up waiting 2 hours to be one of the last parties seated (their hours end at 9pm). There's a small parking lot in the back, but it was full and we all ended up parking somewhere on the street behind the lot. Once we got inside, it was a mix of a dark, club style ambiance with slightly more modern upscale decor. Someone was doing the spicy katsu challenge before we were able to place our order and the whole place basically stopped with dedicated lighting, music, and MCing for the challenge. It's definitely quite loud inside, and we were barely able to hear each other at the table throughout the meal. Most of our dishes came with a side of rice, and strangely enough we were given these bowls of rice almost immediately after ordering, about 30 minutes before our food actually came out? -tenderloin katsu: this comes in a box set, which was pretty to look at but did take up quite a lot of space on the table - the small dishes were nothing too special; i liked the potato salad and always appreciate kimchi (tho there wasnt much of either). It also came with a ?mushroom cream soup which all of us felt tasted a little strange and didn't go with the rest of the set, and some wontons that I'm pretty sure are the same Bibigo cilantro wontons you can buy at Costco. Regardless, the katsu itself was a generous portion, crispy without being too oily or heavy, and not dry. I will say the tenderloin cut was a little unexpected, so it felt like more meat than if it was a thin katsu cut. Overall, Rice Junky Katsu has some good katsu, but I'm not sure it truly stood out - the katsu itself was good, but everything else that came with it was just kind of okay. read more

I'm so happy there's a specialty katsu place that's opened up near me. Considering katsu is one of my favorite foods, I was very content with the quality and variety Rice Junky Katsu had to offer. I saw they were doing a soft-opening special, so my fiance and I came around 6pm on a Friday. There was already a super long line and a large crowd of people waiting for a table. We put our name down, and the worker let us know that he would text us about 10 min before our table would be ready, and let us know it should take about 1 hour for a table to open up for us. We were able to get seated after waiting a little over an hour, but unfortunately for me, they were already out of the pork loin katsu, which is the one I wanted to try. We ordered the tenderloin katsu, Seoul classic katsu (both of which were 50% off), and the crispy pork belly to share. The crispy pork belly came with huge pieces of crispy pork, but the star for me was the papaya geotjeori. It had a really similar taste to som tum, but with a slight Korean twist, and I loved how fresh it tasted with the pork belly. Both katsus came out at the same time, with the tenderloin coming out in a cute bento box. Each katsu came with a variety of sides like rice, salad, marinated jalapenos, mini dumplings, mushroom soup, etc. The tenderloin was extremely tender and juicy, although I do wish there had been some salt and wasabi to go with it. That's my fave combo! The sauce for the Seoul classic katsu was nostalgic, with the perfect balance of tang and savory. We cleared everything! Parking seems to be a struggle since there was a huge influx of people from the soft-opening special. I was lucky enough to grab a spot right away, but there were a lot of other cars circling or waiting with their hazards on. We got what I thought was more food than we could eat, but apparently we were very hungry and ate most of it! There was enough for 3 bowls which was just the right amount. It was good on a cold day. The Gyukatsu was ok. Some of the beef was a bit hard to chew. It came out with a small grill to heat it up some. That helped, but to us it was just ok. Not as flavorful as we had hoped. It came with a wasabi sauce that gave it a good kick. Our favorite was the Bacon, Kimchi, Shirmp & Cabbage Jeon. It was soft and crisp with it being served on a hot plate. The flavor was very good. It was our favorite dish of the night. The Pork Tenderloin Katsu came out a bit later. It was very good. I thought the tenderness was on point. My wife thought it could have been more tender. We just got back from Tokyo so I think she was remembering how tender the kurobuta pork katsu we got were. I difference in the quality of the product shows. Not saying Rice Junky's quality was bad, it was just how high quality of a product we got in Tokyo was. I'd definitely come back for this dish though. I think it's one of the best katsu's I've had in the Bay Area. Last out was the Crispy Pork Belly. I wanted to get the Tteokbokki with House Made Fish Cakes, but they ran out of the fish cakes. :-( This was an ok dish. The pork belly was a bit to crispy and hard. We had it as a left over the next day it was actually better to us. The flavor of salad worked well with the pork belly. Overall it was good, but not perfect. Came here for a late evening meal. And it went pretty well - keeping in mind the fact that it's a soft opening. I showed up at 730 and was seated around 9, though again, it was pretty expected since it's still the soft opening phase. The restaurant was completely full, and orders were coming out frequently. The restaurant itself is pretty small on the inside, so the line moved pretty quickly. I ordered the clam soup and the gyu katsu. The clam soup was VERY good. The broth was garlicky and buttery and it was loaded with clams and mussels. It was definitely a tasty dish. I also ordered the GyuKatsu, which was the main reason I went. It was a good sized portion, came with a good amount of bonchon and was just a really good dish, close to the Gyu Katsu I had in Japan. The only difference really was the wasabi you get in Japan vs the wasabi sauce you get here. Service wise, everything went super well. Even though they close at 9, they honored anyone that had put their name on the wait list and still served everyone, even though it meant the restaurant stayed open an hour past their closing time. After watching the food on instagram, we looked forward to try this restaurant. We ordered chicken katsu, cheese katsu, pork tenderloin katsu and a side order of pork belly with shredded papaya. Out from all the dishes, i personally like the pork belly the best. The katsu was ok. It was interesting that the breading for the pork tenderloin katsu was different than the breading of the chicken katsu. The meal came in a wooden box with little serving of seaweed salad, pickled cucumber jalapeño, mushroom soup, kimchi and one other thing i could not identify (if i had to guess, i would say pork with preserved vegetables). The meal also came with a bowl of rice. Unfortunately, the inside of the katsu was dried. I have better katsu elsewhere so i don't think i will be back. Service was very good though. read more

Definitely felt like you were getting your money's worth and was very filing. Despite it being fried, it did not feel heavy or made you feel like crap after. Got dinner and wow the food was so good! I got the cheese and pork tonkatsu and I was expecting to burn my tongue honestly but I didn't!! It was the perfect texture. The cheese didn't harden while I ate and I do eat kinda slow. My partner got the Korean fried chicken one which was yummy but I'm not a fan of ginger flavors so I didn't eat much of it (I think in the sauce??) Had high hopes for this place but just average to me. The were only open for dinner but finally opened for lunch and work is down the street. I got the classic. Although it looks huge it's thin so meat fries out to get the crunchy texture. I thing the coating and crispness was the high light for me. The Mac salad is also good. I'd probably go back just for that. If only my meat was a bit thicker then I'd say I'd be back. The cute box tenderloins was ok you get the one serving ban Chan with that order. read more

came here around 6:00 pm with my girlfriend, wasn't really packed at all. theres a lot for parking and street parking, we parked on the street. when we entered the ambiance of the place was really nice, it was well lit for like a date lol for the food we got: tteokboki - really good sauce, a little spicy and the fish cake was so good, it was balls of rice cake and i enjoyed it. cold noodles - my girlfriend loved it and it wasn't as spicy but the beef was good. gyukatsu - super delicious, they set up a mini pan grill since the beef comes raw so you can sear it to your liking, at first the pan grill actually went out so he pre heated the pan and set it back up again, this comes with many sides and it was super delicious. seoul night float - didn't really taste the alcohol until the middle of the drink really recommend! read more

Food is delicious, good portion, ambiance is nice! The place is small but decent and I'd definitely come here again :)

came for the first time yesterday with a friend for dinner and there were only two other tables occupied. based on social media, i thought it would be packed. we were allowed to select our own table and menus were already on the table. went back and forth on what to order even though the menu isn't large. we decided to order : five berry soju cooler $12 seoul night float $12 premium top loin katsu $24 crisp pork belly $18 korean sweet and spicy chicken bites $15 drinks came out first and they are delicious. food followed shortly and presentation was pretty. food was crisp and not oily which i enjoy. items that stated spicy wasn't really spicy to us, sadly. the man we interacted with was very friendly and welcoming. he answered questions without annoyance which is very rare to find nowadays. i honestly feel he was the owner because you can tell he cared about the restaurant. we had plenty of leftovers after dinner, so lunch for work tomorrow will be set. thank you for the great service and delicious food. read more

A creative Korean fusion katsu place! The terderloin was served in a fashionable Japanese treasure box with various sides. It was tender and juicy but dab a little truffled salt, BAM! All the sides was nice and spicy besides the mushroom soup that looked like a dessert a pleasant surprise in a K restaurant! I'll be back! read more

Came by during their grand opening with my friend on Wednesday evening around 6pm and we waited for about 25 minutes. Luckily we were able to just write our name and number down and sit in our car. They texted and called us to make sure we knew we were next. My friend and I shared the Seoul Classic and the KFC. We felt that it eas the perfect amount of food. I loved the sauce on the cabbage salad and their radish kimchi. Definitely both dishes tasted fresh and crispy when it first came out! Once the KFC cooled down, the batter did start to get a bit hard, which made it tougher to chew through, but the flavor was still good. I liked the little side dishes from the KFC, but I enjoyed the cutlet from the Seoul Classic plate more. Since it was their grand opening, they had a $20 off deal, which made the meal very affordable. We paid the full price with tip first and then went outside to get our venmo rebate at the table. They also gave out a cute little tote bag and mentioned they'll have an event in the future to fill that bag with snacks if you bring it back! They had some kinks here and there, like they forgot to give us menus and forgot the sauce on my cabbage salad, but overall they were very nice and efficient and I felt that they had it handled pretty well for grand opening week. Food: - a lot of dishes like tonkatsu and gyukatsu felt more japanese than korean - The seoul tonkatsu was not bad. The brown sauce tasted like they blended some fruit into it for sweetness, but it was more vinegary/acidic than I would've liked. The tonkatsu itself was thin, but not dry and well breaded so it was really crispy. I wish they didn't cover the tonkatsu with sauce though, because I felt like I had to eat quickly to maintain the crispy quality. - The gyukatsu was definitely special! Nothing else like it in the bay area. Not as juicy as the gyukatsu you'd find in Japan, but pretty decent. i wish there was a cheaper option without the side dishes, which were good but not what I was looking for, and took up a lot of space on the table. The ambiance of the store is good, they have modern tables and chairs and nice decor. It's a comfortable experience. - The service was pretty good; I think as they are doing a soft reopening, they are being extra attentive to customer feedback. - The gyukatsu dish is 41 dollars, which I think is way too much for me to justify ordering again, even though the taste and texture were very good. read more
