But after weighing the price of the all-you-can-eat vs ordering exactly what we were craving a la carte, we decided to just order off the menu, which was the smart move since it was much less expensive and we ended up full. The place is casual and a little not-fancy decor or ambiance wise. You wouldn't bring anyone here you wanted to impress. . .but the food is what's important, right? The sushi was good! The rolls were large, the options were creative, and everything was tasty and met expectations. I wouldn't say it's elevated sushi, where there are layers to the flavors and you go "wow". But you get your sushi and see the portions are a good size and are happy that you get to dig in and eat satisfying sushi. 3 of us came here for lunch on Saturday around noon. There're plenty of tables available inside and we got seated right away. Both decor and service were minimal. We grabbed the menus ourselves from a nearby table. We originally wanted to try their AYCE, but since the whole table had to participate, and one of us wasn't that hungry, we decided to order a la carte. We're glad we did. The 3 of us were already stuffed after sharing an appetizer and 4 signature rolls. The sweet potato tempura came out piping hot; the batter wasn't too thick. While the dipping sauce lacked flavor, the dish was still ok, and not too oily. We're impressed by the number of signature rolls they offered, and tried to pick something we hadn't seen at other sushi restaurants. My favorite was the lobster tail tempura that came with the Boujee rolls. It was tasty with a light batter. The plating was beautiful. The torched salmon, shrimp tempura and spicy tuna were good as well, but I didn't really see any real crab inside. The Skittles roll was pretty delicious, too. I liked that it had unagi, crab, tobiko, and avocado among other things. The Umami roll also had unagi and carb, but the salmon skin and bonito flakes were what made the roll special. My daughter didn't care for the salmon skin, though. The Black Mamba was interesting if you liked softshell crab. I didn't care for the macadamia nuts, though. Portion size was huge. We were super hungry this day after getting off of work on a Friday night. We saw there was an AYCE menu and decided to try it. There is a little too much rice for my preference but I don't typically eat that much rice daily so just my own preference. You can taste the fresh ingredients and the fish just melts in your mouth. Kakuna Sushi is kitty corner to Branham High School in the Meridian Park Plaza center where you'll find Lunardi's & CVS. There is a ton of parking, so no worries there. Came for lunch on NYE and there were a handful of tables taken but it's such a large restaurant it seemed emptier. There are two choices of AYCE options and the premium gives you access to nigiri and a choice of one of the 5 ish premium options. This was my second time at Kakuna Sushi with my family, and we came around 6pm for an early dinner on a Sunday night. There were 2 other parties at that time, and we were told to pick any table we'd like to sit at. By the end of our meal around 7:30pm it was definitely busier but still with plenty of tables open. The service was fine throughout, and the space itself is brightly lit and spacious but not too fancy. We got the Omakase box, a deluxe chirashi, the hokkaido roll, citrus roll, and mango crunch roll to share across 4 of us. The quality of the fish in the omakase and chirashi bowl is really good, and everything was fresh and cut into generous, thick slices. The rice in the chirashi bowl was surprisingly good - you could tell it was fresh and had a good bite with each grain of rice holding its shape - this was a really pleasant surprise! The rolls weren't as good this time as we remembered, and you can actually see from my photos of the citrus roll from the last time we came compared to this time that there was significantly less salmon inside the roll, and more pickled radish, and we felt that there was less sauce/flavor as well. Despite this, the quality of the fish is still great even in the rolls - just wasn't as satisfying this time around. This was my first time dining at this restaurant, and my friends and I chose it as a spot to catch up. We went with the premium all-you-can-eat menu, and it was absolutely worth it. All of the nigiri we tried were amazing. I'm a huge tuna fan, and the tuna here really stood out in terms of freshness and flavor. The carpaccio was also very good, and I enjoyed the oysters as well. One standout item for me was the special boujee roll and the spicy scallop handroll, which was stuffed really well and not rice heavy. I appreciate their pricing - it is no where near as high as some places which find to be too expensive. Their chicken katsu is tasty per my 8 year old, could possibly use more salt? But otherwise, decent bento portion and we love the Gyoza. We did a few rolls, my favorite is the Citrus roll. One thing to note is their pricing. It's super affordable compared to a lot of sushi places! They have a HUGE space so I definitely think it'd be a great spot to go to if you have a larger party. I'm usually a Lion King person at other sushi restaurants but the one here just doesn't hit the mark for me. The rolls are around $14-18 which IMO is quite the steal for the size of the roll. I liked how much roe was on this roll. Chicken Teriyaki Bento $13.99 +$4 cali roll - I liked it, bentos come with soup, rice, salad, 2pc gyoza. The California rolls were so good and the chicken was nice. Beef Teriyaki Bento $15.99 +4 cali roll - this was okay. The beef didn't taste bad, but I've definitely had better and it didn't really have teriyaki flavor. I wouldn't order it again. The place looked clean and the chefs making the sushi did such nice work and was constantly busy making new rolls. Service was meh, leaning on not good. I got my food about 50min after ordering on the phone when they said it was going to be 20min. I walked in 25min after ordering, and waited another 30min til my order was ready. I have no clue if my order was forgotten or if they did not stagger the orders enough. The restaurant was less than 1/3 full at the time. Only one person was kind and apologetic and offered me a drink (he was wearing glasses). I said no thanks. I would have preferred they take off one of the $4 CA roll add ons haha. The food almost dropped too because the other server that gave me the food loosely tied it closed. Management needs to hire more front of house staff. We went on a random weekday afternoon, and for 8-10 tables, there was just one server, and he was probably helping out in the kitchen as well. He was speed walking running food, packaging up takeout, clearing, taking orders, etc... because of this, it literally took 10 minutes to get our water, and 25 minutes to order. After getting our food, he never came back to check on us or refill water. All the other tables were experiencing the same level of service. The food itself was just okay for the price point. I'd recommend to just stick with high volume items like salmon, tuna, rolls, and deep fried food. read more
