The coffee itself is amazing, and I'll probably keep going for that reason alone. But the service and cleanliness has really taken a dive. Dirty tables that don't get wiped down for hours, dirty spoon containers right next to the clean ones? And honestly, if you pay your employees so little that you have to make your pre-selected tips start at 25% and go to 35%,, and still not have enough support to bus or at least wipe down tables, you have a business model problem. Like many other shops, they've also stopped using plastic straws, which is great. Listen, I'm not one to normally leave reviews, but I was really disappointed by Kaladi today... I've been going to Kaladi for years. It's the only place I buy beans and the coffee has always been good with great service. Today was my first negative experience and I'm sharing in the hopes that Kaladi can fix the problem and return to the high quality shop I know them to be. I went in this morning to get some beans for my aeropress and a cappuccino before class. The person at the front was polite as always, the person who ground my coffee for me was pleasant and helpful, but the barista working just seemed to not know what was going on. The woman ahead of me ordered a cafe au lait and he started to make it without steaming the milk first. She pointed out that it is supposed to be steamed so he dumped the drink and remade it. When he made my cappuccino, he over-steamed the milk, let it sit for a couple of minutes to separate, then just scooped the foam on top of the espresso. I was a barista at third-wave shops for years and that's just not a cappuccino. Kaladi's cappuccinos have always been balanced with a good consistency of milk, but this barista really let me down. I was in a hurry to get to class so I didn't have time to request it to be remade, but it just was not good at all. Kaladi, at the very least, needs to retrain this barista. I don't know if he got experience elsewhere and they did not train him how to properly make drinks or if this is his first coffee gig or what, but it was clear that his drinks are not meeting the same quality standards I'm used to at Kaladi. He was kind of tall with hair long enough to cover his ears and was wearing glasses. Kaladi has not lost a customer with me yet, I just hope they can get all of their baristas dialed in because I would hate to have to start seeking out my beloved cappuccinos elsewhere. read more

Once upon a time, I worked for an "Illegal" burrito place right down the street from Kaladi. I became a daily regular. Since leaving that burrito stand, I still drive out of my way and past many, many other coffee shops to stop at this one location. I keep reading negative reviews about customer service and as someone who lived and worked in the neighborhood for years... DU kids are the worst. DU attracts terrible children to their school and they beat up the people who work in those neighboring businesses. So imagine if you will taking care of hundreds of snot nosed little brats (and or their even worse parents) all day long, and it will rub off on you. Don't take it personally, these people really do give a damn, they have just had the life sucked out of them by ungrateful little rich kids. I drive out of my way to visit Kaladi because I love the people there. I love seeing Adam (Pony), Emily or Erin. They always make my day brighter. They are worth those extra miles! Came here Sunday morning at 9 and was surprised to find seating so easily! Being so close to DU and nearing the end of the semester, I figured it would be a student haven. By 10, the place had already filled up. I love their discount if you bring your own cup or order your drink "for here." I ordered an iced oat milk latte, but they were out of oat so I settled for soy. I would have loved to add flavor in there but I'll have to try the house syrup next time. The baristas were nice but busy with the morning rush. I am always on the hunt for the coziest coffee shops and this one is definitely on the list. I prefer the quaint rusticness of places like Kaladi over the modern chic coffee shops. This place is super trendy and cute on the inside. Really cool artwork, and a funky menu, with lots to offer on the tea and coffee side. I got the iced soy latte. It was excellent I love their espresso beans its smooth, flavorful. They also have almond milk if you don't like soy or regular. The only thing was the people that worked were not the friendliest. Walked in to grab a couple bags of whole bean coffee. My husband was standing at the door with my service dog. I was at the counter (2 feet away) wanting to pay and the chic behind the counter approached the register and told my husband that dogs were not allowed and he had to leave all without greeting me. We are not confrontational people and she completely caught us off guard with her staunch abrupt rudeness. She rang up the 2lbs of coffee I had and I paid. I told her that she should not have been rude to my husband and dog. She could have been a lot kinder to him and to me. I told her that is my service dog and she told me that "it" should have a vest on to warn everyone. I explained to her she should have ASKED if the dog was a service animal or a pet. She should not have just assumed. Let me inform you and her that a service dog does NOT need to have a vest on. I informed her of this and she proceeded to argue with me as I was walking out the door....in a VERY snide, snarky attitude she yelled out for me to have a nice day. Wow. It was the very first and last time I will ever go to Kaladi coffee. This is clearly a training issue for staff to be informed on service animals and not to be rude to customers. Life is short, although it doesn't seem that way while cleaning your bathroom . . . but I digress (without even having gressed anywhere). Hmmmm. Oh, caffeine. Yeah. That's what this is about. Caffeine. OK. Where was I? Oh, Kaladi Bros . . . So look, coffee is nature's way of getting us happy, and positive, and jazzzed, and I forget what else, but something else. Coffee from artists, like those roaster-folks at Kaladi's, marries fun together with art. (I guess that would either be "art'un" or "f'art"). Where was I? Oh. So Kaladi's folks make the best espresso in Denver (though you might wanna compare it to Pablo's and Fluid to be as objective as possible; but how can matters of taste be objective? I guess they're both: subjective (ummm, as in "me like you my precious coffee") or objective (ummm, as in "this coffee is well roasted without being burnt" (and me like you my precious coffee)). What's going on? Oh. So at Kaladi's if you show any interest whatsoever in the how and the why of how great their coffee is, they'll be more than happy (now how can someone be more than happy; well, they could be very happy, but what's the point of being more or very of the thing you simply want to be without anything more than . . . happy? What was I saying?). Oh. They'll be happy to take you in the back, so to speak. Hmmmm. So after showing just a bit of interest in their coffee they took me for a tour of the coffee roasting room. I enjoy how bustling this coffee shop is. It seems so very alive. But, it isn't so loud that it's obnoxious. It's almost like being at home during a movie-worthy Thanksgiving. There's a lot going on, but you love it all. The coffee I had was an Americano and it was oh-so-good. The breakfast burrito I tried was advertised as spicy and boy was it. This little coffee shop exemplifies the spirit of its lively, young university neighborhood. It's definitely busy and full of college students, but that's the kind of vibe for which I look in a coffee shop. The inside is very nice, with plenty of seating and variety of table sizes to accommodate both large and small groups. Plus, it's always nice to have a homey alternative to the big chains. I really enjoyed my latte, which had rich flavor and beautiful foam. My friend pointed out the back room where they roast the beans on location; and I find it incredible and wonderful that they do that here. I could definitely taste the difference in the espresso, and I'm excited to try an Americano on my next visit so I can have it without the flavor of the milk. Cost wise, it was right on point: a small latte and a small Americano for a little over $5. It would have been a five-star experience, if it weren't for the staff. The young man who took our order was very polite, but the guy working the cashier was downright rude. He ignored both me and my friend while we waited to ring up -- even though we were next in line and standing right in front of him -- so that he could chat with the customer who came in behind us. Even when he finally did acknowledge us, we had to repeat our order twice because he wasn't paying attention. It took so long that by the time we were done checking out, our coffees were ready and waiting for us. That, coupled with the fact that the bar area for cream and sugar was messy (spilled sugar, overflowing trash, etc), and I just couldn't give the fifth star. BEST COFFEE EVER! That is all I can say. I frequent coffee shops often and this place is couldn't even come close to disappointing the most avid coffee goer. First of all they roast their own beans in a huge roasting room. They have all kinds of contraptions to prepare your coffee anyway you like. They have some of the contraptions for sale. Whenever I go in here the line is out the door. The people who work here are always nice, and you can tell they REALLY LOVE COFFEE. The atmosphere makes me feel like I am in the country and in New York all at the same time. And duh... the Coffee rules the world. I just get a nonfat latte wherever I go... but when I come to Kaladi Brother's my latte is so darn smooth I think I am drinking hot chocolate... but coffee... so like a hot Coffee wait. Yep! I hate Starbucks but Kaladi in Denver really needs to emulate the customer service at Starbucks. The girls working there seemed to absolutely hate their jobs. The woman who took our order seemed to want as little to do with me as possible. Instead of a pleasant interaction I had the feeling she wanted to scream "just give me your order and then shut the hell up you idiot, can't you see I am a professional barista?". I don't see how they stay in business. The cappuccino was way too dry. She merely poured a small amount of espresso into a paper cup and then the filled the cup up with very dry foam. I have popped in to Kaladi a couple times. Pros are that the location is fantastic right off Evans and very close to the main part of DU campus. The interior is retro industrial so lots of open space and it's very relaxing. Also the quite noise level is also great for working. (important for me.) They roast their own coffee which is great. It's actually the coffee that I drink at home now and is never bitter. I also think there matcha is top notch, they don't sweeten it at all which is great for me! On the other hand the coffee in the shop is almost always bitter, which I don't understand at all. I have also tried the Kaladi on Broadway and it's never bitter there. So I guess this is just an Evans location issue? Another problem is a trade off with the great location is the parking is horrible. I always have a hard time trying to find a spot close. My bf and I came here for a Friday morning breakfast. I tried an iced Kaladi Latte and liked that it came in a mason jar. It tasted like bitter coffee-chocolate with a good amount of sweetness. We were told that the Iced Venetian tastes like chocolate ice cream and tends to be very sweet, so we didn't choose that. My bf got the hot sumatra and we both thoroughly enjoyed its bold flavor and robustness. Since they didn't have any doughnuts on weekdays, we got the pumpkin spice bread and blueberry-lemon croissant. Both were very tasty and went very well with our drinks. Free refills on their house coffee too. The baristas are awesomely nice too! There's an outlet at every table for people to charge their juice-loving electronics. We felt really comfortable eating there and wouldn't have minded lounging longer to bask in the coffee aroma, but we had a day of touristy plans to get to. I wished this place could exist at wherever I lived since I think it's become my favorite coffee shop after one visit! This place makes a perfect weekend place to go back to week after week, especially since it's also right across from Fermaentra. Let's start off by addressing the smell of roasting coffee... It's intoxicating! I love that they know how to roast (hey Starbucks: not burn!) their beans! I was in the area and drove by two of the big coffee giant's shops to get to this place! Boy was it worth the *tiny* extra drive! From reading all the other reviews I knew I had to ask about the Venetian Cream, when I did , I was promptly given a sample... I should say I've been decaffeinated for almost six months. But when I tasted the sample of heavenly blended coffee it was worth driving the other people around me crazy with my jittery antics for the day! (I wish they had a decaf version though, I'd drive out of my way for it!) I am typically skeptical of non-dairy drinks but this one is legit. The Venetian Cream is deliciously creamy and delightfully sweetened. The shop itself is cute and charming. The walls are adorned with beautiful art and the people were nice! I walked in with a political shirt on (I'm a delegate, attending assemblies all day) and got a few funny looks :-) but other than that it was great! (I swear I'm on the good guy's side!) I sat near what had to be the manager's office, the door was half open and there were bookshelves full of books about coffee... They obviously care about their craft! I really really like this place. I'm yet to have a bad cup of coffee from here. They're popular enough that several coffee shops use them and they're a pretty darn good roaster. The shop itself is relatively cheap when it comes to coffee prices. The shop itself has been there for quite a few years and definitely has less of that pretentious coffee shop vibes than others. I also had a wonderful blueberry Danish there the other day that deserve props. I guess the only tiny knock I have is that they usually serve their coffee a tiny bit too hot (I've knocked other shops for this so I'm just being fair). That being said, this place is great. It's certainly in the top tier of Denver coffee roasters and holds their own as one of the best coffee shops. Highly recommend. read more

This is still my favorite coffee in the Denver area. I had not been back to the location in a while, although I keep a mental note of other places using Kaladi beans (including Fika in Parker, and Comrade Brewing). There is something about the roast they get on the beans and the depth of flavor in each cup, that makes it worth the trip here (and the hit or miss parking). Now that Fermaentra has opened, directly across the street, I feel that I can more efficiently coordinate my two libational addictions. I don't always drink coffee right before beer (or vice-versa), but sometimes it is just a happy coincidence that puts these things in sequence. read more

Up until a few years ago I rarely drank coffee - occasionally a cup after dinner at a restaurant. I never got the "coffee every morning" thing. I went through a very brief Starbucks stage when I was commuting to my office every morning (years ago). I got hooked on Starbuck's Mocha with whipped cream - really more of an early morning desert than a cup o' joe. That all ended when I realized that not only was I spending an obscene amount of money on my morning treat but even worse, I'd packed on 5+ pounds. Now my office is in my basement and my morning commute does not require that I get in my car - or even put on shoes for that matter. Since we have this really nice Cuisinart coffee maker, I decided to start using it. Although my husband and I still don't drink coffee every morning (my jump-start includes a big glass of OJ, thank you), we have gotten into the every-other-day coffee habit. Given that I'm drinking it more often, I've noticed that I have become much pickier about what beans I load into my machine. We started buying what ever was on sale at the grocery store (whole beans only - none of this ground in the tin can junk). The grocery store experiment didn't last as the coffee had obviously been on the shelf too long and often tasted and smelled bad. We moved on to Peets (which we love) and occasionally Peaberry. But the best coffee, in my humble inexperienced, non-coffee expert opinion is Kaladi Brothers Coffee on East Evans. Kaladi Bros roasts their own beans and has the tastiest blends that I've ever tried. It also helps that it is a college coffee house and is therefore always full of students and locals hunched over their laptops or having mindful discussions. Kaladi Bros also has a gazillion dollar espresso machine (one of only a few every made) which brews up the most amazing espresso ever (like smooth rich foam). Lastly, i discovered recently that my favorite local restaurant, Z Cuisine, serves only Kaladi Brothers coffee as they they think it's the best - and that's good enough for me. read more

I don't frequent this coffee shop too much but I can honestly say I have had mediocre service with average coffee. Today as I ordered the two people at the counter were talking and continued to talk while taking my order. Emily I think is the name of the lady helping me, was irritated with my request and offered a snarky comment after my order. Then as I took a few sips of coffee she corrected me about my mask. As a nurse I understand more than the average individual the importance of masking, but as a coffee shop that serves food and drinks a mask down for a couple minutes should not be so eagerly enforced. I've been a long time Kaladis fan. My family and I typically go to the one on Broadway, but liked how close the one on Evans was to us. However, after today I don't think we'll be returning. This will be our fourth time going to this location and receiving subpar service.
