Classic Margarita

My friends and I went here for the national margarita day promo. It took at least 10 minutes for anyone to come to our table after we were seated. The margaritas were ok. The nachos were disappointing. The can gimmick meant that only top chips had anything on them. Overall, can't say we'll be back.

You can order from here at the brewery next door! We did just that, and the food showed up so fast. You do have to go pick it up, but they are super nice and fast about service. I didn't spend much time inside, grabbed my tacos and went off. I got two tacos, carne asada and chicken tinga. They were so yummy!!!! I felt pretty full after as well so that is a plus as well :) I would definitely order tacos from here if you're at the brewery next door.

Made my way to Kalaka this past weekend to start the Cinco de Mayo celebration early as What I tried: Sotolita: Sol2Noches Sotol, passion fruit purée, agave, lime, Tajín rim Tamarindo Margarita with Sotol instead of tequila Mango Mezcalrita, also subbed with Sotol Al Pastor Wings with pineapple & creamy habanero-pineapple sauce Trashcan Nachos loaded with carnitas, green chile queso, and more Trashcan Chilaquiles Mole Enchiladas with chicken tinga, crema, sesame, and cilantro rice Best bites & sips: The Tamarindo Margarita with Sotol? A must. The Sotol adds so much depth which the same goes for the mango one. Wings were fire, and nachos always hit. I definitely need to go back and try more of the food but everything we had was yummy. Our server was so nice and helpful and the vibe was relaxed and fun too!

Taco Tuesday! We were in around 6 to get some to go tacos to take next door to the brewery. I grabbed a menu, and we made our selections and ordered at the bar. The restaurant inside was empty except for four folks sitting at the bar. The outside patio had about 5 tables of people. It still took close to 25 minutes for a to go order of 4 tacos, chips and salsa to come out of the kitchen. They were delicious! I had the chicken mole and a shrimp taco. The mole had so much flavor. My husband had one chicken and one chicken tinga taco. He enjoyed both. The chips and salsa were tasty. Great food, long wait. Still a worthy stop for some tasty tacos.

Had a great visit to Kalaka! We had family in from out of town and they were thrilled with this visit! We shared an order of queso, tried the sopes, carne asada, enchiladas, and burrito with carne asada. We also had a couple of their beverages including the margarita, pineapple mule, and horchata. Everything was so delicious!! Our relatives have asked that we bring them to Kalaka every time they come for a visit. Our server was attentive and friendly- I especially appreciate him being bilingual. The atmosphere was fun and laid back- we had such a pleasant afternoon hanging out and catching up. This will definitely be a regular in our dining out rotation.

Very nice ambiance - well kept and clean. Food was excellent - definitely worth it. Service was just right.

This food was incredible. Some of the best Mexican food I've ever had. This place knows what they're doing! GET THE CHICHARRONES

This place caught my eye, after reading Matt's review. I went there because of Al Pastor wings, but decided to get their big ass breakfast burrito instead, and it was delicious! My wife had the breakfast tacos and our friend chose the Huevos Rancheros. All of the food was great (especially the guacamole), and so was the service. I also had a NA drink which was great! This location is adjacent to Call to Arms brewery and it has a nice, cozy ambiance. I plan to return and order the Al Pastor wings and to try their dinner menu. Great addition to the Tennyson area!!

Have seen Kalaka before in Berkeley but haven't been able to try it out until now. Kalaka shares the same building with Call to Arms Brewing. As a result, you can order from Kalaka's and eat it at Call to Arms. They have a QR menu at the tables in Call to Arms to advertise this. The menu is expansive ranging from shareable apps of wings, nachos, fries to family meals, to single street tacos. I ordered the Asada and Chicken Tacos. They were good - I've had worse and I've had better street tacos. The order was ready pretty quickly and was fun to eat Kalaka while sipping on beer from Call to Arms. Would go again.

Ordered from Kalaka while visiting the neighboring brewery. Used the online menu to place a quick order for some tacos to go. Food was ready quickly but did not come packaged with utensils and napkins so my friend had to go back for those items since the tacos were filled with ingredients and a little messy. Our tacos did have nice spice and flavor. My fish taco had a good size piece of fish with a sweet jalapeño glaze and chipotle sauce. The Al Pastor taco was good, just way too many onions and there was no grilled pineapple as described on the menu. Overall, ok for street tacos.

MOLE ENCHILADAS

Tried so many Mexican places over the last 9 years here from the springs to FoCo . These are now my favorite chiliqueles. The mole enchiladas were fantastic as well. The mole was spot on. A little sweet with a little spice on the back end. Take it from a man with a Mexican wife from Guadalajara. This stuff was great.

Disappointed by Portion Size for Takeout We ordered the Kalaka Molcajete to go, expecting it to be enough for two people, as suggested by the price ($32) and the in-house presentation. While we were aware that it wouldn't come in the traditional bowl, we assumed the portion size would still be comparable. Unfortunately, it was not--the serving was absolutely pathetic, especially the sides. The taste of the food was great, but for the price, we expected a much more substantial meal. Instead, we each finished our portions within minutes and were left feeling unsatisfied. If you're dining in, this might be worth it, but for takeout, we wouldn't order it again. I rushed and didn't take a great photo, but the rice was in the same size container as the beans...

I started going when they were still operating out of their food truck, and honestly, watching them grow into a permanent restaurant feels like seeing your favorite underground band finally make it big... except instead of music, they're dropping cheesy taco masterpieces. The queso tacos are absolutely ridiculous in the best possible way: crispy, cheesy, messy, and worth ruining at least one shirt over. And the consome? That stuff could heal emotional damage. It's rich, comforting, and somehow makes you immediately want "just one more taco" even when you're already full. Every time I'm in Denver, this place is mandatory. Not optional. Not "if there's time." Mandatory. My vacation itinerary basically starts with flights and ends with tacos. So happy to see Kike's getting the recognition they deserve. If you haven't been yet, prepare to have your standards permanently ruined for all other tacos.

The horchata, though? Genuinely great. I actually also really liked the elote but my partner didn't. The consomé was fine, nothing memorable. Not a big deal but they put all the tacos in one box and I was able to differentiate which 3 tacos that I ordered. This place is super stingy with salsa. They gave me 2 tiny containers for salsa and then when I asked for a couple more, the lady said she could only give me two more. :( Excited to try the food and started off great with a simple bean, cheese, and rice burrito but outside of that everything else was very meh. Not sure how but all the meats were so dry, I ordered braised/slow cooked meats (barbacoa and carnitas). Asada and pastor were okay as well. Everything lacked seasoning and the salsa didn't add much to the tacos either. Birria tacos were also dry and consommé needed salt to be added. Value was not bad at $37.64. Tacos were about $3-3.20 per

This long skinny establishment - not necessarily super spacious - can offer you a decent food that you can count on. You don't need anybody to go with - you can be a solo diner because this place is not intimidating in any way. It's that casual. I think this establishment was born in the old Stoney's Cantina space. Whether the place was huge enough to create two businesses (and thus La Loteria occupied half of it), I sort of saw some "remnant" of Stoney's was the impression that I got. Whatever I am correct on this or not, this casual Mex place is all about vivid pastel colored interior where red is mostly dominant. Intriguing murals on walls 360 degrees are quite impressive. Once you are inside, a huge arrow to direct the people to order to their left at the ordering counter. That ordering counter extends all the way where you'll see some bar seatings. The right side of it mostly has tables for small to large groups of people. Like I said, this place is not huge but at the same time, people don't stay long to dine; the turnover is quite quick in a way. The restaurant also gets many walk-in to-go order placers as well. I got me the Aztec Bowl for to-go. This dish is only $11 (as of early May of 2025) and is a vegetarian item. I consume a lot of vegetarian diet and yet my instinct loudly spoke to me to add some protein to it. Whether or not you can keep it non-meat to stay in the vegetarian zone, adding some protein to this dish is a must as if it was by itself, it would be a bit boring because it only has some greens and some slices of avocado. As the add-on, I got me the carne asada ($5.00) that comes with rice. Not bad.. I didn't eat it right after I got home; I meant to get it to eat it the next day which I did (this AM.) It was still fresh where nothing tasted stale. The carne asada was well-cooked with seasonings. In other words, it wasn't salty at all but held good flavors. Now on the receipt, I saw a charge of what's called "takeout service fee" which is 18%. I kind of assumed that this was mostly the mandatory gratuity. At the end of the card transaction, I remember that the different gratuity percentages were listed on the machine and they were quite small because of this fee. It'll be up to you to add more if you wish. Some people might complaint about this mandated system and yet I kind of understand that businesses nowadays must survive by navigating through the rising cost of living. As we have seen our favorite businesses disappear in the recent years, I am here to support them by whatever I could within my power. Whereas the parking on Broadway is a pain in the neck at any time of the day, if I think of a casual Mexican dining in the Baker neighborhood next time, I may stop by here. It's a good establishment to know.

It's also very unassuming. It looks like a very small restaurant on the outside but once you are inside, you'll be shocked to see its good size dining area. This place is all about happiness. I mean seriously!! They care about their customers that get satisfied with their service and meals. And it does draw a very diverse crowd from the Hispanics to Caucasians to Asians, I mean you name it. They also get a lot of to-go orders. Some people came in, grabbed their food and went on their way for the night. My friend got the Torta Los Carboncito. This is a massive sandwich with plenty of meat inside. Since the menu has colored picofor almost each item, what caught my attention was the fish dish. There are two of them: one is trout and the other is something else (I forgot) but I got me the non-trout one. The lady asked me if I wanted the flour or corn tortillas so I went with the corn one. As soon as I got home, my late night snacking started. I only took several bites out of that whatever the huge fish. And oh my goodness, it was so delicious! Well-seasoned with very light salt. Although I mainly got it for tomorrow morning/lunch I had a hard time quit eating because of its deliciousness. Extremely welcoming staff (I even met the owner, Alex as he was dining with his family), quality food and value pricing, this place checks out for the hidden gem restaurant that's not necessarily super fancy but it's worth every penny and time. Yelping is so much fun. That is why I cannot quit my foodie-ness! What a nice discovery!
