    Birria Tacos
    Beth W.

My partner and I were Jonesing for great tacos--something elevated, not your typical taco. Unfortunately our first choice, Tacos, Tequila, Whiskey wasn't open on Monday for lunch, so we decided to try Kalaka on Tennyson. I ordered the Birria tacos (3 per order for $20). My partner ordered 2 vegetarian tacos. Although the birria tacos had great taste, they weren't grilled properly to get that crispy exterior that allows you to pick them up and dip in the delicious beef consommé--the whole point and delight of birria tacos!!!! I had to use a knife and fork, and the exterior of the tacos were overly greasy. So that was disappointing. My partner really liked the veggie tacos, saying they were delicious and filling. The service was prompt and friendly. We loved being able to sit outside on the covered patio and enjoy the beautiful day.

My friends and I went here for the national margarita day promo. It took at least 10 minutes for anyone to come to our table after we were seated. The margaritas were ok. The nachos were disappointing. The can gimmick meant that only top chips had anything on them. Overall, can't say we'll be back.

You can order from here at the brewery next door! We did just that, and the food showed up so fast. You do have to go pick it up, but they are super nice and fast about service. I didn't spend much time inside, grabbed my tacos and went off. I got two tacos, carne asada and chicken tinga. They were so yummy!!!! I felt pretty full after as well so that is a plus as well :) I would definitely order tacos from here if you're at the brewery next door.

Made my way to Kalaka this past weekend to start the Cinco de Mayo celebration early as What I tried: Sotolita: Sol2Noches Sotol, passion fruit purée, agave, lime, Tajín rim Tamarindo Margarita with Sotol instead of tequila Mango Mezcalrita, also subbed with Sotol Al Pastor Wings with pineapple & creamy habanero-pineapple sauce Trashcan Nachos loaded with carnitas, green chile queso, and more Trashcan Chilaquiles Mole Enchiladas with chicken tinga, crema, sesame, and cilantro rice Best bites & sips: The Tamarindo Margarita with Sotol? A must. The Sotol adds so much depth which the same goes for the mango one. Wings were fire, and nachos always hit. I definitely need to go back and try more of the food but everything we had was yummy. Our server was so nice and helpful and the vibe was relaxed and fun too!

Taco Tuesday! We were in around 6 to get some to go tacos to take next door to the brewery. I grabbed a menu, and we made our selections and ordered at the bar. The restaurant inside was empty except for four folks sitting at the bar. The outside patio had about 5 tables of people. It still took close to 25 minutes for a to go order of 4 tacos, chips and salsa to come out of the kitchen. They were delicious! I had the chicken mole and a shrimp taco. The mole had so much flavor. My husband had one chicken and one chicken tinga taco. He enjoyed both. The chips and salsa were tasty. Great food, long wait. Still a worthy stop for some tasty tacos.

Had a great visit to Kalaka! We had family in from out of town and they were thrilled with this visit! We shared an order of queso, tried the sopes, carne asada, enchiladas, and burrito with carne asada. We also had a couple of their beverages including the margarita, pineapple mule, and horchata. Everything was so delicious!! Our relatives have asked that we bring them to Kalaka every time they come for a visit. Our server was attentive and friendly- I especially appreciate him being bilingual. The atmosphere was fun and laid back- we had such a pleasant afternoon hanging out and catching up. This will definitely be a regular in our dining out rotation.

This place caught my eye, after reading Matt's review. I went there because of Al Pastor wings, but decided to get their big ass breakfast burrito instead, and it was delicious! My wife had the breakfast tacos and our friend chose the Huevos Rancheros. All of the food was great (especially the guacamole), and so was the service. I also had a NA drink which was great! This location is adjacent to Call to Arms brewery and it has a nice, cozy ambiance. I plan to return and order the Al Pastor wings and to try their dinner menu. Great addition to the Tennyson area!!

I have I was not disappointed love the atmosphere. Food & drinks on point. They have a very nice outdoor & indoor seating. I believe you would enjoy this place 100 . I did !

Have seen Kalaka before in Berkeley but haven't been able to try it out until now. Kalaka shares the same building with Call to Arms Brewing. As a result, you can order from Kalaka's and eat it at Call to Arms. They have a QR menu at the tables in Call to Arms to advertise this. The menu is expansive ranging from shareable apps of wings, nachos, fries to family meals, to single street tacos. I ordered the Asada and Chicken Tacos. They were good - I've had worse and I've had better street tacos. The order was ready pretty quickly and was fun to eat Kalaka while sipping on beer from Call to Arms. Would go again.

Ordered from Kalaka while visiting the neighboring brewery. Used the online menu to place a quick order for some tacos to go. Food was ready quickly but did not come packaged with utensils and napkins so my friend had to go back for those items since the tacos were filled with ingredients and a little messy. Our tacos did have nice spice and flavor. My fish taco had a good size piece of fish with a sweet jalapeño glaze and chipotle sauce. The Al Pastor taco was good, just way too many onions and there was no grilled pineapple as described on the menu. Overall, ok for street tacos.

Disappointed by Portion Size for Takeout We ordered the Kalaka Molcajete to go, expecting it to be enough for two people, as suggested by the price ($32) and the in-house presentation. While we were aware that it wouldn't come in the traditional bowl, we assumed the portion size would still be comparable. Unfortunately, it was not--the serving was absolutely pathetic, especially the sides. The taste of the food was great, but for the price, we expected a much more substantial meal. Instead, we each finished our portions within minutes and were left feeling unsatisfied. If you're dining in, this might be worth it, but for takeout, we wouldn't order it again. I rushed and didn't take a great photo, but the rice was in the same size container as the beans...

It's absolutely authentic, but with an elevated menu that really delivers. We got the chip trio, but you almost wouldn't need it since they have a full salsa bar, including endless pico de gallo and sour cream. But the chips are thick and crunchy and delicious. I tried the taco de birria de chivo (goat) and was truly blown away. The meat is so tender and seasoned so well, you can taste the allspice in it, which is perfect for goat, and so unique to Mexican food. I also tried the al Pastor and the Carne Asada, both were also to die for. I love how they make the taco have a little bottom and give it three sides, to help us fit all the generous portion that they give. They also have several different Agua Fresca's, that you serve yourself and get unlimited refills, including Horchata. It's amazing. I've already come back another time since.

For two people, ordered a set of 3 tacos (2x barbacoa and carnitas) and then another 3 tacos (asada, carnitas, and pastor), birria egg rolls, and a bean, cheese, and rice burrito. Not a big deal but they put all the tacos in one box and I was able to differentiate which 3 tacos that I ordered. This place is super stingy with salsa. They gave me 2 tiny containers for salsa and then when I asked for a couple more, the lady said she could only give me two more. :( Excited to try the food and started off great with a simple bean, cheese, and rice burrito but outside of that everything else was very meh. Not sure how but all the meats were so dry, I ordered braised/slow cooked meats (barbacoa and carnitas). Asada and pastor were okay as well. Everything lacked seasoning and the salsa didn't add much to the tacos either. Birria tacos were also dry and consommé needed salt to be added. Value was not bad at $37.64. This long skinny establishment - not necessarily super spacious - can offer you a decent food that you can count on. You don't need anybody to go with - you can be a solo diner because this place is not intimidating in any way. It's that casual. I think this establishment was born in the old Stoney's Cantina space. Whether the place was huge enough to create two businesses (and thus La Loteria occupied half of it), I sort of saw some "remnant" of Stoney's was the impression that I got. Whatever I am correct on this or not, this casual Mex place is all about vivid pastel colored interior where red is mostly dominant. Intriguing murals on walls 360 degrees are quite impressive. Once you are inside, a huge arrow to direct the people to order to their left at the ordering counter. That ordering counter extends all the way where you'll see some bar seatings. The right side of it mostly has tables for small to large groups of people. Like I said, this place is not huge but at the same time, people don't stay long to dine; the turnover is quite quick in a way. The restaurant also gets many walk-in to-go order placers as well. I got me the Aztec Bowl for to-go. This dish is only $11 (as of early May of 2025) and is a vegetarian item. I consume a lot of vegetarian diet and yet my instinct loudly spoke to me to add some protein to it. Whether or not you can keep it non-meat to stay in the vegetarian zone, adding some protein to this dish is a must as if it was by itself, it would be a bit boring because it only has some greens and some slices of avocado. As the add-on, I got me the carne asada ($5.00) that comes with rice. Not bad.. I didn't eat it right after I got home; I meant to get it to eat it the next day which I did (this AM.) It was still fresh where nothing tasted stale. The carne asada was well-cooked with seasonings. In other words, it wasn't salty at all but held good flavors. Now on the receipt, I saw a charge of what's called "takeout service fee" which is 18%. I kind of assumed that this was mostly the mandatory gratuity. At the end of the card transaction, I remember that the different gratuity percentages were listed on the machine and they were quite small because of this fee. It'll be up to you to add more if you wish. Some people might complaint about this mandated system and yet I kind of understand that businesses nowadays must survive by navigating through the rising cost of living. As we have seen our favorite businesses disappear in the recent years, I am here to support them by whatever I could within my power. Whereas the parking on Broadway is a pain in the neck at any time of the day, if I think of a casual Mexican dining in the Baker neighborhood next time, I may stop by here. It's a good establishment to know.

It's also very unassuming. It looks like a very small restaurant on the outside but once you are inside, you'll be shocked to see its good size dining area. This place is all about happiness. I mean seriously!! They care about their customers that get satisfied with their service and meals. And it does draw a very diverse crowd from the Hispanics to Caucasians to Asians, I mean you name it. They also get a lot of to-go orders. Some people came in, grabbed their food and went on their way for the night. My friend got the Torta Los Carboncito. This is a massive sandwich with plenty of meat inside. Since the menu has colored picofor almost each item, what caught my attention was the fish dish. There are two of them: one is trout and the other is something else (I forgot) but I got me the non-trout one. The lady asked me if I wanted the flour or corn tortillas so I went with the corn one. As soon as I got home, my late night snacking started. I only took several bites out of that whatever the huge fish. And oh my goodness, it was so delicious! Well-seasoned with very light salt. Although I mainly got it for tomorrow morning/lunch I had a hard time quit eating because of its deliciousness. Extremely welcoming staff (I even met the owner, Alex as he was dining with his family), quality food and value pricing, this place checks out for the hidden gem restaurant that's not necessarily super fancy but it's worth every penny and time. I grabbed a seat at the bar where the bartender was friendly and engaging. On a recent Wednesday at 7:15, the restaurant was packed. When I left around 8:30, it was still busy. That's usually the best review a restaurant can get. Loyal customers don't keep coming back out of habit. They come back because it feels like home. The all-day happy hour margarita for $9 certainly doesn't hurt. The second one arrives before you've had time to argue yourself out of it. I ordered the enchiladas with carne asada and their house mole. If you're expecting one of those intensely complex moles with enough ingredients to fill a pantry, this isn't that. Adelitas' version is comforting, approachable, and deeply homey. It tastes less like a culinary experiment and more like something your abuela has been making for decades. The carne asada was tender, the rice and beans were exactly what they should be, and every bite reminded me why comfort food never goes out of style. Before leaving, I made the smartest decision of the evening. Tres leches to go. I devoured it later at home while Netflix asked if I was still watching. The cake somehow manages to be light while completely satisfying. Don't skip it. Better yet, don't pretend you're saving it for tomorrow. Adelitas isn't trying to impress you. It's trying to feed you well, welcome you warmly, and send you home happier than when you arrived. Whether your abuela was Mexican...or Greek...you'll understand exactly what they're serving here.
