They have so many deals throughout the week, including brunch, taco Tuesday ($3.99 tacos all day), etc. We have gone several times now, including for Cinco de Mayo (they brought a mariachi band for several hours!) and the food and drinks are always good. A neighborhood staple for my wife and I. We frequent Kalaka pretty often as we live in the area and the food is pretty good everytime we go. Some of the dishes that definitely surprised me are the molcajete (which can easily feed 2 people), the mole enchiladas, and the pozole rojo. The pozole rojo was a particular stand out at my most recent visit for being nice and spicy and the broth has a really nice depth of flavor. Definitely recommended for a casual night out! My partner and I were Jonesing for great tacos--something elevated, not your typical taco. Unfortunately our first choice, Tacos, Tequila, Whiskey wasn't open on Monday for lunch, so we decided to try Kalaka on Tennyson. I ordered the Birria tacos (3 per order for $20). My partner ordered 2 vegetarian tacos. Although the birria tacos had great taste, they weren't grilled properly to get that crispy exterior that allows you to pick them up and dip in the delicious beef consommé--the whole point and delight of birria tacos!!!! I had to use a knife and fork, and the exterior of the tacos were overly greasy. So that was disappointing. My partner really liked the veggie tacos, saying they were delicious and filling. You can order from here at the brewery next door! We did just that, and the food showed up so fast. You do have to go pick it up, but they are super nice and fast about service. I didn't spend much time inside, grabbed my tacos and went off. I got two tacos, carne asada and chicken tinga. They were so yummy!!!! Taco Tuesday! We were in around 6 to get some to go tacos to take next door to the brewery. I grabbed a menu, and we made our selections and ordered at the bar. The restaurant inside was empty except for four folks sitting at the bar. The outside patio had about 5 tables of people. It still took close to 25 minutes for a to go order of 4 tacos, chips and salsa to come out of the kitchen. They were delicious! I had the chicken mole and a shrimp taco. The mole had so much flavor. My husband had one chicken and one chicken tinga taco. He enjoyed both. The chips and salsa were tasty. Great food, long wait. Still a worthy stop for some tasty tacos. read more

Had a great visit to Kalaka! We had family in from out of town and they were thrilled with this visit! We shared an order of queso, tried the sopes, carne asada, enchiladas, and burrito with carne asada. We also had a couple of their beverages including the margarita, pineapple mule, and horchata. Everything was so delicious!! Our relatives have asked that we bring them to Kalaka every time they come for a visit. Our server was attentive and friendly- I especially appreciate him being bilingual. The atmosphere was fun and laid back- we had such a pleasant afternoon hanging out and catching up. This place caught my eye, after reading Matt's review. I went there because of Al Pastor wings, but decided to get their big ass breakfast burrito instead, and it was delicious! My wife had the breakfast tacos and our friend chose the Huevos Rancheros. All of the food was great (especially the guacamole), and so was the service. I also had a NA drink which was great! This location is adjacent to Call to Arms brewery and it has a nice, cozy ambiance. I plan to return and order the Al Pastor wings and to try their dinner menu. Have seen Kalaka before in Berkeley but haven't been able to try it out until now. Kalaka shares the same building with Call to Arms Brewing. As a result, you can order from Kalaka's and eat it at Call to Arms. They have a QR menu at the tables in Call to Arms to advertise this. The menu is expansive ranging from shareable apps of wings, nachos, fries to family meals, to single street tacos. I ordered the Asada and Chicken Tacos. They were good - I've had worse and I've had better street tacos. The order was ready pretty quickly and was fun to eat Kalaka while sipping on beer from Call to Arms. Would go again. read more

Ordered from Kalaka while visiting the neighboring brewery. Used the online menu to place a quick order for some tacos to go. Food was ready quickly but did not come packaged with utensils and napkins so my friend had to go back for those items since the tacos were filled with ingredients and a little messy. Our tacos did have nice spice and flavor. My fish taco had a good size piece of fish with a sweet jalapeño glaze and chipotle sauce. Disappointed by Portion Size for Takeout We ordered the Kalaka Molcajete to go, expecting it to be enough for two people, as suggested by the price ($32) and the in-house presentation. While we were aware that it wouldn't come in the traditional bowl, we assumed the portion size would still be comparable. We went on Friday for a birthday and we had the upstairs area to ourself which was nice. Our servers were great and they even brought out a flaming ice cream thing for the dessert which was very nice. However, the food was disappointing. I did have a bite of a birria taco which was great, but everything else was sub par. We started off with the "deconstructed" guacamole. I don't understand it. Why am I paying $17 to make my own guac? I had the carnitas taco and shrimp taco. The taco shell itself was too thin and both split while I was eating them. The tacos were overstuffed for how tiny the tortilla was. The carnitas was SO oily it was dripping and kinda gross to eat. The shrimp taco had okay flavor, but it was literally falling apart while I was eating it that it was such a mess. My husband had the mole enchiladas and they were spicy as all get out. My friend got the mocajete and said it wasn't very good. Someone got the fish taco and she said it was soggy and gross. It pains me not to give 5 stars because I normally love Kalaka - we have been big fans since they opened up in Evergreen during COVID and were really excited to try the brunch on Tennyson Sadly... it was a very mixed experience. To start with the good: my pineapple coconut marg was the perfect mix of a pina colada and a marg, went down easy and was SO good. My husband had the brunch bowl and it was yummy and filling as well. Server was super nice as well and it has a fun vibe. The problem was the brunch tacos. I went with the bacon option, and chose scrambled egg. I'm not a fan of potatoes and usually ask for them to be left out which might have made a difference? Not sure though because the dish was essentially tortillas filled with cubed/ greasy fried potatoes, a few pieces of basically uncooked bacon fat (so gross, picked as much out as I could), and 1 egg scrambled for all 3 tacos. I was starving so I ate what I could but totally regret it and should have just left it. Had anyone come to check to see how the food was I probably would have said something... but no one did. For $15 (!) I'd expect so much better (!!). We're ok with spending more for a good meal... but this has quite literally put a bad taste in my mouth about coming back. We might - eventually - but won't be making a special trip (or coming for brunch) anytime soon. Sigh ... this was hands down our favourite place for dinner for ages ... read more
