It's a cute place on the outside and inside. The staff is also really nice and everyone had a friendly vibe. The flautas were pretty tasty I enjoyed the meat on the inside and the toppings it included. The pozole had good flavor but the meat was a bit undercooked, not raw, just too tough to chew. Great!! We ordered the following tacos: Tinga, chicken, asada, and al pastor. If you're in between the tinga or chicken, get the chicken , it was so good. The asada had a bit of spice to it and was also 10/10. If you're heading home from the mountains this is a perfect stop. We will be back. read more

First - Yelp is how we find most every new place we visit. This time was no different. It's always nice to have a fun new place to visit and see a bit of what you can expect. We ordered drinks and shared their green chili con queso. I had a spicy marg and he had a glass of their Private Barrel Maestro Dobel neat. The queso had a great flavor - the green chili was distinct and paired well with the queso. One request - pair back the chips (also good, fresh and not too crispy) or ramp up the queso portion. The portions didn't match. My spicy marg was legit spicy - so spicy it overpowered anything I was eating. Loved it but would drink it away from food. For our mains: green chili enchilada and three tacos for him (fish, chicken and veggie). Both were good but not great. My dish asks you to choose your meat: chicken tinga or cheese. For me, neither of these options were ideal. The chicken tinga was spicy alone and didn't balance well with the green chili. It overpowered it for me. His tacos were good but he shared that the oil used to fry his fish was old. Easy fix, if someone from management is reading. Super cute place. We loved the metal ceilings, light fixtures and stone throughout. I can see date night near their cozy fireplace or back at their bar again. I'll know what not to pair together next time too. read more

Fantastic Mexican food. Came here for dinner and didn't have expectations that were too high. This place absolutely exceeded those expectations. Service was good and food was delicious. I got the chicken mole enchiladas and man was the mole good. I'm a huge fan of mole and it is hard to find a good one out there, this was a good one. I don't get up to this end of town very often, but when I do this is my favorite place to stop for brunch - especially since the patio is dog friendly and I almost always have a dog or two along for the ride. I'm a big fan of the carrot margarita - I know, it sounds weird, but it's super yummy. Last time I was in I had the breakfast tacos, and the friend dining with me had the brunch skillet. Both of us were very happy with our choices. On this most recent visit, service could have been better, but I'll definitely be back for the margaritas. read more

We were looking for a Mexican brunch on the way down from the mountains, we found this place. Lots of brunch options, but I went for the trashcan chilaquiles with an over medium egg. It was extremely tasty with a great sauce and presentation. They even had carrot and beet margaritas, delicious. The interior was very unique and well kept - kinda cool gothic arches and day of the dead vibe. Our server was great too, irrespective of him being new. It was a bit of a wait to get the food out, but nothing too painful. I would recommend giving it a try, and definitely if you are the same situation we were. read more

Visiting my friend, we did a snowshoeing hike so came here for an early dinner. My friend loves the red pozole but I'm more of a green fan myself. I really like this place; we come here alot. Tonight will be the last for a long time. It was a pretty busy Friday night but not full. We were seated for over 90 mins and only had one drink; at a Mexican restaurant when we intended on have several margaritas just because our waitress came by for drinks once. Food came out quick after waiting 30 mins to order but they forgot our starter. Asked approximately 5 times for our check before finally getting it. The waitress seemed to be trying to hustle but was not efficient. There was a manager present that stood behind the bar observing and occasionally clearing a table never checking on several tables that all looked visually frustrated. Fresh, creative takes on Mexican food. You'll see menu choices not found at typical suburban Mexican restaurants. The wait staff is always friendly and relatively prompt. If it's really busy service can be a tad slow. A word of warning: it's noisy. The concrete floor, pressed tin ceiling, metallic furniture and chairs/stools that screech across the floor and conversations combine into a cacophony if it's busy. It's not a deal breaker, but if you have trouble hearing in noisy environments be prepared. read more

Hate to see this happen, but the quality here really fell off, to the point where I need to update my review. This time around, the birria tacos were kind of boring and lacking in seasoning and flavor. In particular it was lacking a sweet element. The pastor taco I would say was quite bad, a 2/10 on the taco scale that I did not finish despite being hungry. Bland seasoning, tough meat. The carnitas taco was decent. The queso was still great, but 10 bucks for a very small portion. Note this restaurant charges a 3.0% surcharge. :/ Not sure if they changed chefs or if I just caught them on an off day, but this meal has converted this restaurant an "avoid" for me. Excellent food. We ordered the mole enchiladas and the Kalaka burrito. The seasoning was subtle, with a gentle ramp of enough heat to make it spicy without overpowering the flavour. The cilantro rice and black breaks were delicious sides and the service was good. The only fly in the ointment - and the food was good enough that I'm not docking the grade - was the fact that the patio music was way too loud. I asked the server about it and he showed me that the volume control only affected the inside volume, not the patio...I hope they fix it that! read more

Amazing! We were visiting from out of town for a ski trip, and we're looking for a little aprés ski margarita and Mexican food. Kalaka exceeded our expectations. Elevated, gourmet Mexican food for great prices! The enchiladas con mole and flautas were delicious. So was the shrimp ceviche. I would definitely recommend doing their happy hour margs ($6 on weekdays between 3-5p, and $5 Mondays). We had a wonderful time and actually came back a second time before we left.
