We decided to stop for some lunch after riding and discovered a New Mexican place off I-70 in evergreen. I would describe their food as elevated Mexican dishes that are thoughtfully assembled. This is not one of those Mexican restaurants that serve indiscernible food items under a pool of green chile and cheese, but puts thought into how the dishes are prepared and presented. Home made chips are to die for! Birria tacos were amazing and my wife had the chicken and mushroom and spinach quesadilla. So good and fresh! Great place to try some new flavors. Nice place! Had the namesake burrito and it was pretty dang good. It was a little chipotle-ish but the addition of their green put it way outta reach of chipotle. We also had the ceviche starter. Very good menu, service and decor. The food is quite good and more upscale style than most. Portions are large. The esquite starter (grilled corn) is excellent and would work for a table of 4. My favorite Mexican entree is chile relleno; I liked the one here although I prefer the simple ranchero style more. The poblano is large and has a generous cheese filling. It's deep fried with a thick breading on the outside which is counter to my preferences. The sauce drizzle on top is nice. Black beans are possibly the best I've ever had. Mrs G ordered fajitas which were nicely presented with an assortment of sauces, rice and black beans. I'd love to try their cocktails next time. For months we have been speaking with the owner of this establishment about our item they have communicated they are in possession off. We have sent prepaid shipping for it multiple times. Each time they claim they do not receive it, despite the proof of it being signed for and confirmation from the post office in Evergreen. We have continued to try and communicate on this issue with no response because they have been called out for the lying and do not have any more excuses they can use not to send us what they are stealing. This is a great dinner experience! The trio salsa and chips was fantastic. They have a good mix of spicy salsa but the green chile isn't as spicy for the average spice eater. You can never go wrong with papas, and the green chile queso papas were great! The burrito was pretty good but reminded me of Chipotle so next time I will get the relleno. It's nice to finally have a good Mexican restaurant in Evergreen. I only wish it were located closer to central Evergreen, rather than up north off the interstate. My wife and I enjoy happy hour at Kalaka once a week. The choriqueso is outstanding, and more than two of us can finish. (I have some leftovers in the fridge right now, and looking forward to a midnight snack.) The tortillas are also great, which is a rarity in Colorado. What an improvement! Far better than your typical 3 Margarita's style. The food is different, fresh and delicious! We tried ceviche, street corn, tortas, and chili rellenos. My favorites were the ceviche and street corn. Lost 1 star for undercooked crunchy rice, but I was so full I didn't really need the rice. Mostly, I loved how relaxed I felt in the shade on their patio on margarita Monday ($5.00 margs!). The music is great; it's hip Mexican music; and if I wasn't looking at a mountain of evergreen trees, I might have thought I was in Mexico. The food we had was quite different, they put tacos inside a savory sopapilla. There are many other choices if that isn't your jam, but I enjoyed trying something new! Updated Review After JeffCo moved to level Blue we were ready to try Kalaka in person and they did not disappoint! Their take on queso is still delicious and the in person serving size is on par. The salsa trio had such variety, there's sure to be a flavor for everyone at the table. We tried four different street tacos: chicken, barbacoa, fish, and queso asado. Each taco is traditionally prepared and fully loaded. All four tacos were satisfying, right down to the crema or sauce detail. The winning taco is queso asado - even if you're not a vegetarian, you will love this taco and not miss the meat at all. Margaritas were well balanced and handmade with no sign of sugary commercial sweet/sour mix. Last but in no way least, service is fantastic while still following Covid precautions. We can't wait to go back and try more of their amazing menu! read more

I really like this place - our go-to for Mexican west of Denver. But last night they messed up big by neglecting something so small: soap. See if there isn't soap in the bathrooms, how do you suppose the cooks are washing their hand?? No problem, told my server. Waited a while and checked back. Nothing. In the 5x I've been to Kalaka, I always really really want to love this place. It's close by my house, ambience is awesome, well decorated, and the people are nice BUT I just can't get there with the food and margs. Margs taste decent but are pretty weak in terms of alcohol. I ordered a double Marg, but was given and charged for a shot separately which was interesting. The food is good but not great, always something seeming to be missing. The one star was only for the drinks, they were amazing! The trash can nachos are also really good. Other than the drinks and the nachos, if you like unseasoned, faux mexican food this is the place for you. Very bland, I wouldn't call this real mexican food whatsoever. The presentation was nice, and the restaurant itself is a cool environment. We waited about 20 minutes just for a server to take our order, and an hour and a half to receive the food. It also wasn't too packed for this kind of service. I wouldn't recommend this place other than a stop for drinks prior to dinner, or just to drink if that's what you're into. read more
