I'm Korean-American and live in Los Angeles. After being away from LA for two weeks, I was seriously craving Korean comfort food--not fine dining, just something that felt like home. Yelp led me to Kalbi Asian Bistro in Wilmington, DE. I'll admit, my expectations were low based on the overall Yelp score, but options were limited, so we gave it a try. We ordered the Tteokbokki (medium spice), Duk Mandu Guk (rice cake & dumpling soup), Bulgogi Rice, and Samgyetang (Cornish hen ginseng soup). Every single dish hit the spot. Everything tasted authentically Korean, which is hard to find outside of big Korean communities. The mandoo (dumplings) in the soup were clearly homemade--not the frozen kind--which is always a great sign. The meal came with a solid spread of banchan (side dishes), and the two women serving us were incredibly kind and attentive. Bonus: Prices are very reasonable. I ordered bul gogi which was delicious. It comes with sides of bean sprouts, potatoes, something green, Kim chae. I loved the beach sprouts! And the bul gogi was seasoned very well. The waitress was very friendly and checked in on us often, and took our order right away which I appreciate. There was a decent selection of wine and basics for the beer. This is the only legit Korean joint in the Wilmington metro. Fortunately for us it is a pretty good one. I always get started with a seafood pancake or Korean fried wings. The seafood pancake is always loaded with pieces of squid and shrimp. No soggy batter here either, the savory pancake is always fried to perfection. I miiiight like it more than scallion pancakes. Ordering kbbq to go is kind of a waste so I usually order some rice dishes to go. Bibimbap is my go to. Best Korean food in Delaware that I've tried so far!! My husband is Korean and we love going out for BBQ as well as a la carte. One of our favorite weekday lunches is Kalbi. He loves the kimchi jigae lunch special (I definitely spelled that wrong). And I loveee to get their bulgogi tteokbokki (again probably misspelled) which is off their main menu (not a lunch special). It's almost $20 but it's extremely filling and worth every penny. I usually have leftovers too to bring home for our son to eat after school. The service is top notch as well, always. And it's clean and modern inside (but small). I highly recommend trying Kalbi. read more

Probably the best Korean food in the area! Food is flavorful, staff is very nice and its comfortable in there! I got the sweet and sour pork and jajangmyeon. Portions are pretty big. Flavor is really good. The initial bite of pork is crispy. Could use a little more flavor but overall it was very good especially paired with the noodles. Now the noodles were INCREDIBLE! That's all i have to say! My friends got the rice stone bowls which are a solid choice if you're a beginner to korean food! I appreciated that the staff asked me how spicy I wanted it, and it was appropriately fiery per my request. Banchan side dishes were just ok though (mayo on broccoli???) and I swear they were being a little stingy with the rice. Enough so that I ordered an extra side of rice, which came at a stinging $2 charge on top of the $14 soup. That said, Korean restaurants are rare in this neck of the woods, and I'd definitely return to Kalbi. read more

Discovered this authentic Korean gem in Ellsmere, DE! Home-cooked Korean favorites like japchae, bibimbap, jjanmyeon, etc. They feature a nice, extensive menu featuring rice pots, rich stews, noodles and even barbecue. It's located in a nondescript strip mall and the entrance is completely non-assuming. But as soon as you go in it's like crossing the Pacific ocean into a local eatery in Korea: clean, well-organized, humble no-nonsense decor and warm personal service by "ajummas" that almost want to adopt you. The service is great, the food comes out piping hot and freshly-made just a few minutes after you put in your order. You get a nice assortment of sides (banchan) included with your order, featuring kimchi, fishcakes, etc. Japchae was richly flavored, abundant and noodles were wonderfully chewy. Kimchi was crisp and fresh, as were all the banchan. We also ordered a bibimbap packed with fresh veg and tasty meat. Went back a day later for Jjangmyeon, a fantastic dish of silky umami-tastic black soy bean sauce with pork. If you've ever seen a police k-drama, you've seen the cops eat this. One of my favorites are dolsot (the rice was nice and crispy on the bottom, I loved it).....also ordered kimchi pancake to share with the table as an appetizer and Kalbi (to consume later that day) the food was good and the menu has more items that I'm going to go back and order! I went with a couple of my neighbors, during the late afternoon. Service was quick and friendly. When presenting the check, they didn't serve traditional candy, they gave the little probiotic drink. Which I didn't take a picture of. They separated tables with little curtains/screens that I think could be adjusted if the parties were larger. The place is not too large, but, there seemed to be a steady stream of people. Whether you dine by yourself or with others, this is a place to visit if you are in the mood for Korean.
