Saturday night check-in, and there were just a few patrons inside the restaurant, and takeout was slow The menu consisted of appetizers, soups, salads, ramen, hibachi, sushi, sashimi, rolls, and signature rolls Our order went in for two appetizers, one was the pan seared dumplings, and also some fried crab rangoon For the main course, my friend had the shrimp curry ramen, and I ordered a specialty roll called a momoirio roll, and an order of salmon sashimi I also ordered one of those peach ramune drinks After a short wait, the two appetizers arrived. The pan seared dumplings were absolutely delicious, and I would definitely get again. The crab Rangoon to me was a little bit off and flavorless. Also, it wasn't deep fried enough, so it was a little bit spongy and tough, instead of crunchy on the outside with an exploding filling My friend loved the curry shrimp ramen, which had a very generous portion of shrimp included. The salmon sashimi I had appeared to have been colored a deeper hue, which tells me it was probably farm raised. It also was very oily, and very hard to pick up with the chopsticks. I had to fork it. The salmon was also room temperature, which kind of set up a little warning for me like maybe it was a gas station sushi.... I ate it. It was meh The signature roll I ordered was terrible in presentation. It looked like it was wrapped in human skin and kind of grossed me out. The signature roll also had some type of white sauce, spritzed over the top of it, which was not appealing to my eyes. Flavor wise, there was none! I could only taste cucumber. I couldn't taste the lobster, I couldn't taste any other flavors in it. There were some black stuff on top that was crunchy. I didn't know what it was. I had to go back to the menu to see the other ingredients. And as far as the white sauce... I couldn't even imagine a flavor. As for service, the server we had seemed a little bit inexperienced. When I questioned some of the items on the menu, she had no answer and she had to go get a menu to read to me what was included in it. While she kept our water glasses full, she never asked if we wanted a dessert or tea What would have been a nice touch, but missing should've been some noodles with dipping sauce. That didn't happen. Also, maybe some complementary tea while we were looking at the menu would've been nice... Other than around the checkout- pick up-workstation, this restaurant was sparse and lacking decor. It also seemed like there was a lot of wasted space Somehow, I just was expecting more like some typical and traditional Japanese style. Boy was I wrong. As far as a date night atmosphere to remember, dining here isn't it. This place could offer the town so much more, as it seems like it could be so comfortable to hang out here have a few cocktails and enjoy a nice traditional Japanese dinner. But it misses the mark. I'm so on the fence with the rating. It definitely isn't a five piece. It's not even a four star. Parking is plentiful in the plaza. For $72 with the tip, and without alcoholic beverages; I think this visit was not a value. Fair service, no ambience, very limited menu... so reluctantly I give it three stars It just seemed like I didn't feel welcomed. When leaving, I paid a little compliment to one of the young males behind the register and he just seemed to take it with a grain of salt like in one ear and out the other....not even a thank you In closing this place is best for takeout read more

Commentary for takeout only: Solid casual Japanese takeaway, speed and prices. Overall the food satisfied several hungry bellies. The menu is decent, with various ramen, hibachi, sushi, and appetizers. We enjoyed the shrimp tempura, avocado, and sweet potato rolls, all with six pieces each. Of the ramen, we had the shoyu chicken, vegetarian and wonton (all tasty though more toppings would have been good especially vegetables); the wonton had a thick skin so they didn't fall apart in the broth - I liked this but others thought it was too thick. Much of the food had an unexpected sweet flavoring. We also enjoyed the seaweed salad and vegetable gyoza though the latter weren't big pieces. The packaging of the ramen was effective because the toppings were separated from the broth to prevent sogginess. The ambiance of the location feels pretty sparse with a lot of white space. No one was in the establishment when we picked up the food, given a Sunday evening and holiday. The vibe felt like more of a casual quick meal or takeout vs. someplace to linger and bask in the atmosphere. They also had a kiosk to order and pay in the store if you don't feel like talking with anyone. When ordering, we didn't create an account so didn't get a notification about when the order would be ready. But they say 20 minutes on the website and it was ready when we arrived. We are new to the area and wanted to check out the local sushi places. Came on a Thursday evening for dinner and the place was empty. Should've been our first red flag. The menu was pretty limited - half a page of specialty sushi rolls, and did not have much variation. Started off with the kani salad which was mostly cucumber. I had one of the specialty rolls to try, the mango tango roll, and asked if the salmon can be subbed with shrimp tempura. Luckily they did. The roll wasn't bad. My fiancé ended up having two normal hand rolls because he didn't care for any of the specialty rolls. Honeslty the lack of options and variety left me wanting more. Prices weren't bad but not enough to bring us back. Felt like elevated grocery store sushi in my opinion. read more

"Thank you, next I'm so grateful for my ex" (Ariana Grande) It seemed that regardless of the business that occupied the space at 712C Hopmeadow Street, the same question always arose - "what's coming in next?". That's because in rapid succession, that space was occupied by Lion's Den Coffee, Ana's Coffee, and Peaberries Coffee. Well, the newest occupant has trashed the coffee legacy of its predecessors and reimagined the space as an Asian fusion destination for hibachi, ramen, sushi and sashimi. The old coffee counter and sales area on the right side have been transformed into a welcoming dining area with tables and chairs. On the left, a newly added reception area greets guests upon arrival. The restaurant has a roomy open "feel". We took advantage of their lunch specials yesterday, and they have a very nice lunch program with Bento Boxes, Poke Bowls and Sushi. We went with a Two Roll Sushi Combo ($10.99) and a Three Roll Sushi Combo ($14.99). Both include your choice of salad or Miso Soup. We ordered tuna and salad for the Two Roll Special and Salmon & Avocado, Tuna & Avocado, Spicy Yellowtail and a salad for the Three Roll Special. The simple salads were very good -cold fresh lettuce and the traditional carrot-ginger dressing. The sushi was excellent, but we did notice an oddity about the two lunches. The Two Roll special was prepared Maki Style, with rice inside and seaweed outside. The Three Roll special was prepared Uramaki style, with rice outside and seaweed inside. And to be honest about it, the Maki rolls seemed decidedly smaller than the Uramaki rolls. Now maybe there's a reason for the inconsistency, and if there is .. please let me know. But it confused us because all of the roll options are listed in a block of choices with no asterisks or anything to set expectations. Kyoto is a new Japanese restaurant that recently opened its doors in Simsbury, promising an authentic taste of Japan. For the most part, it delivers by offering fresh sushi, a host of great appetizers such as crispy tempura, perfectly pan-fried gyoza, and an unexpectedly amazing coconut shrimp that's a must-try. Unfortunately, their ramen falls flat, and while this may not be a dealbreaker for most people, my Japanese family LOVES ramen and is very particular about the flavor. The broth at Kyoto in all four of our different ramen choices lacked depth and was missing authentic Japanese broth ingredients like konbu, mirin, bonito flakes, and dashi. The sliced pork (cha shu) was also bland and forgettable. It felt more like a basic noodle soup than authentic ramen, which was disappointing. My husband also ordered a boba tea that was small and watery, also lacking authentic bubble tea depth and flavor. However, it may have been the flavor he chose as he originally wanted strawberry (they didn't have it). All in all, Kyoto is worth a visit for their small plates and sushi, but I recommend skipping the ramen and boba tea for now. I'm hopeful that, if they make some critical updates to their ramen, they will be successful! read more

Nice clean simple atmosphere. Booth seating with a couple of tables. This was a quiet Sunday afternoon and I went in for a light lunch. So this review is based on a very limited meal. . I had the Wonton soup which was quite good. The broth was a little heavier than normal but it was quite tasty. Maybe some ramen like broth. The 5 wontons were large and quite meaty. I think I was missing a little seasoning in the filling. The wonton wrappers were a little thick and a bit tough for my liking. For 3.99 it was a deal . I had one maki roll which was the Triplet roll. The fish was fresh and tasty. I found the nori wrapper a little tough as well. The roll was good. The service was quick and friendly. The prices here are quite reasonable so it's a good value for the money. Not the best, but certainly good . read more

Large booths for groups of four. Movable tables for any larger groups. Comfortable settings. We've had many group dinners with some friends there. Good food with sushi and ramen. Sushi is very fresh. The ramen always come out hot and freshly made when ordered at the restaurant. Appetizers were also good. Try the Kyoto wings, popcorn chicken or cheese rangoons for appetizers. We like the area and it has a large parking lot shared with a few other stores. We have not gotten takeout but I assume the food is better when eaten there since it is sushi and ramen. We happened to walk in here last week and were surprised to find out that we were their first customers. We decided to try three of the ramen bowls. I thought the price was very fair at $15 a bowl. We ordered sushi from Kyoto yesterday. The fish was fresh and tasty, the sauces on point, and the portion sizes decent. My wife said it was the best Sushi she ever had! Everything was fresh, tasty and the size of the pieces were huge compared to other sushi lunch rolls. The two lunch specials came with soup or salad and they offer 2 or 3 roll lunch specials. To start the music is HORRIBLE......why not play some Japanese style music, instead of LOUD, teeny bopper music. The space lacks warmth, is cavernous, and is not inviting. The young people at the register need better training in how to greet and handle customers. There was no one to thank us upon leaving. On a positive note the sushi was good. I have been eating at various Asian restaurants for 45 years and last night's meal at Kyoto in Simsbury was the worst I can remember. I ordered Wonton Soup and Hibachi Chicken. We ordered around 5:50pm on a Saturday night and amazingly our order was to be ready in 20 minutes. That made me wonder. Then when I picked up the order, our bag of food was the ONLY order on the counter. At Table 570, where we regularly go, at this time of night on Saturday there is at least 15-20 orders on the counter. That made me wonder too. Then I took the food home and ate it. Shocking. The chicken was at least 1-2 days old, dry, with zero flavor. The vegetables were draped in water and tasteless. The fried rice had no flavor whatsoever, my wife concurred. It was like eating old dry tasteless food. My Wonton Soup was amateur and quite mediocre. I am not sure I saw anyone over 25 working there. At Table 570 they are adults, professional, and quality. We thought we would give a new restaurant a shot. To say this was a disappointment is to pay a compliment. We made one mistake and this will be our last. read more
