If you want something else like this, you've gotta go to Queens. If you want the fusion stuff, stay in the city. I've been to Kalye multiple times and each time it never misses. The flavors of every dish is a flavor from home. The kinilaw is a perfect vinegary starter with delicious chunks of tuna. The dish has a nice hint of spice and aromatics. I'd gladly suggest the laing with chips as well. If you're wary of what to get, get the lumpia and pork bbq skewers for something more tried and true. The bangus in this bangsilog is always fried to perfection, allowing the initiated to eat every piece including the skin and head. The sisig is soooo good! Mixing in the uncooked yolk into the sizzling dish, allowing every bit of meat to integrate well with each other. It's a beautiful spoonful. The aromatics and spices in the sisig complement the pork beautifully. If you have a chance, I recommend the Boodle Fight Club! This large shareable meal is a great intro into Filipino culture and cuisine. It's a prime Filipino invitation to great conversations with even greater food. Shoutout Justin and Brendan! We came to Kalye with a big group of 7 people and ordered the big Boodle Fight platter, as well as a couple of other dishes (noodles) just in case we were still hungry. I think for such a large group an extra dish or two helps but we were super super stuffed and satisfied by the end of the meal. Service was great and kept helping us out with the crowded table area. The food itself was stunningly good- the crispy fish and pork of course but even just the white meat of the chicken was so juicy and tasty! Eating with our hands was the most fun and they give you gloves anyway so you stay clean. The cocktails were delicious as well, I really recommend them. I enjoyed my experience at Kalye! For food we got the bbq pork skewers, pork Sisig, and halo halo for dessert. My favorite was the skewers. They were tender and flavorful. The pork Sisig was good too, but a bit too salty. The halo halo was also a fun dessert to try since it had ice cream, jellies, beans, etc. This portion was good for two people. Decided to try this place with a few friends last Saturday and was not disappointed! The experience was nice from the moment we walked in. The vibe is electric yet cozy. It provides a perfect Lower East Side energy with great music, dim lighting, and that authentic Manila street-food soul without feeling gimmicky. So delicious and our server Raneem had such a great vibe, was super fun, and provided a bunch of recommendations! I was hungry and wanted to try everything so I requested that they choose for us. Raneem recommended the lumpia, Laing with chips, and we got fries to start. For our entree we shared the pork sisig. When I tell you everything was perfect! Everything we ate was legit perfect! As a Filipino, this restaurant has my approval! Filipino food, to me, is nostalgic. I often crave the homestyle dishes my mother made or the dishes I used to get from our local carenderia. Kalye exudes nostalgia. You can see it in its decor, from the sari-sari store perched on their bar to the Capiz windows hung against their walls. You can also taste it in their food. I came with a dear friend, and we ordered three meals from the lunch menu: the sisig, the pork barbecue, and the laing. All were absolutely delicious. It not only satisfied my cravings but also alleviated some of my homesickness. My friend, who is new to Filipino dishes, loved everything as well, and we both vowed to return. Now, let's discuss the food in detail. The star of the show, for both me and my friend, was the sisig. The pork is crip. The flavor, bright and citrusy. The laing comes in close second: It is so wonderfully creamy, a cozy dish on a cold fall day. The pork barbecue was delicious as well. Beautifully charred, sweet and savory. Each dish comes with rice, and if you ever visit, I must urge you to order their inasal rice! It's full of flavor and will only enhance any dish it accompanies. It is so good, you can even enjoy it alone without the ulam (aka mains)! I do want to return here. I had such a wonderful time. The food was good, the company excellent, and the service superb -- we were served by the restaurant owner himself, Rob Mallari-DAuria, who was incredibly helpful, kind, and attentive. This is second time I have tried their food. This time I went to their new location by Delancey Street (LES). The original location I have been to seems to temporary closed (shown on Yelp). Based on my memories I enjoyed their food. This time my friend wanted to go so we went. The time we went was in the evening. I made a RSVP since i wasn't sure if it will be busy. We started off with the Laing with Chips and LRG Darna to share. For our main dish, we went kamayan and shared the Boodle Fight Club which included Lechon Kawali, Lumpia, BBQ, Fried Chicken, Bangus, Bok Choy, Green Beans, Inasal Rice, and Steamed Rice. Looking for a spot to eat in LES and immediately went on Yelp to look at some choices that were in a 5 block radius. Found Kalye and could not believe the vibes of this place on A MONDAY! Live DJ banging tunes and it felt like I was in an episode of "The Boiler Room" young local folks there just vibing, enjoying food and drinks. Service was GREAT and could have totally been the opposite because of how crazy it was in there. Short reviews/recs- Laing, Pork BBQ Skewers, Kare-Kare. Rest were good to decent. I was at this Filipino restaurant a couple months ago with one of my usual groups. This is apparently the second location on the Lower East Side though it seems like the other one is temporarily closed with it also being similarly named. This is also unrelated to Kalye Bistro in Queens which was tasty as well. The service was friendly and the inside is unique with some old Filipino movies on a TV among other fun things. The food was overall tasty with a couple definite highlights. The best thing arrived pretty early which was the Laing With Chips listed as taro simmered in a creamy coconut milk paired with crispy chips for a savory and crunchy twist on a Filipino classic. I am a big fan of this dish and this was a very good example with the dip being a good mix of soft with some thicker pieces of taro. It was savory with light sweetness but not too much and just enough kick to it as well. This was excellent though some might complain the shrimp paste flavor is a bit light as this might have been a vegetarian version. Also very tasty were the Pork BBQ Skewers listed as tender pork shoulder marinated in banana ketchup and grilled to perfection served on skewers for a smoky, savory bite. The pork was tender with a bit of heat and a bit of char from the grill. There's of course some better spots for this such as some places in Woodside and I maybe would have liked a slightly more fatty flavor with atchara over the unique salad they gave with the dish but those are mild complaints for an overall good version and especially for Manhattan. The Lumpia Shanghai listed as crispy fried spring rolls filled with seasoned ground pork and vegetables and served with a sweet dipping sauce were decent. They were a little bit larger than the usual lumpia and were crispy though perhaps a tad oily. The sweet sauce went OK with it but I would have preferred some chili vinegar. This was okay but there's better appetizers. For main dishes, the Kare-Kare listed as a rich and creamy Pork Belly stew with lechon and vegetables simmered in peanut sauce and served with bagoong on the side was solid and a fun spin on the usual with the pork belly instead of the usual oxtail being more tender and easier to pick at. The peanut sauce was thick enough but not too much and there was enough plenty of eggplant and bok choy. My only complaint would be that I would prefer a little bit more heat but the bagoong helped with flavor. The Pork Sisig listed as crispy, savory pork seasoned with calamansi, onions, and chili and served sizzling for a flavorful, mouthwatering experience was pretty good. I liked the mix of textures as it had a bit of crunch to it either from the garlic or something else in there which is lacking from some places though there is less so here compared to the excellent Mama Fina which specializes in said dish so it's a bit unfair. It could have been a little bit spicier for my liking but it was enough. The dish also lacked the raw egg which is mixed in to add more of a creamy texture and I blame the neighborhood for them not adding this. This was an overall perfectly okay version though probably the most toned down dish compared to the original. We also got a side of the Inasal Rice or steamed rice infused with rich annato oil and garlic creating a fragrant, flavorful base for any meal which was fine. It was lightly nutty and slightly garlicky and I probably would have just preferred some normal sinangag/ garlic rice as I found the flavors a tad light. This was an overall good meal with a couple different highlights. The prices were pretty reasonable and the flavors were better than the only other Filipino place in the surrounding neighborhood (Gugu Room) while worse than a few other spots. As half of the dishes were very good, I'll keep up with the 5 train. read more

I had never had Filipino food before visiting Kalye, and it is definitely a new fav of mine! My friend and I came for happy hour last night after visiting for dinner a few months ago. The manila martini is our favorite cocktail and only $10 on happy hour! You can also get happy hour deals at any table, not just the bar. We shared the BBQ skewers, french fries, and lumpia. All 3 were part of the HH deals. I thought the BBQ skewers were good but a little too fatty for my taste. I loved the fries and the spicy dip it came with, but my favorite is definitely the lumpia! I liked Kalye, but I didn't love it. Overall: Queens good, but with Manhattan prices. I came yesterday (Valentine's Day), and I have to say their communication is pretty good. They confirm that you're coming via text and I communicated that I would be late (but I beat the 15 minute grace period so luckily kept my table!). On busy days/nights like these, obviously you're going to keep the table 90 minutes, which I was notified of. My reservation was for 4pm (got there 4:15), and please note it wasn't like full full yet, maybe 50-60% capacity. Things that I didn't like: that the server didn't come to us until 15 minutes later (so we got to order at like 4:30), and the fact that even though we got our small plates and drinks on ok time, we didn't get our main entree (the lechon kawali) until I flagged down the server and told her we had 20 minutes left on our table (5:25ish). I just felt kind of ignored there. You *have* to make eye contact with the server, and not them just automatically check in with you (which is, y'know, service industry 101). Otherwise, the food was like I said, Queens level good. The kawali was perfect crispy. Lots of fat, but otherwise I enjoyed it. However, the stars of the show are obviously the cocktails. Shoutout to the Manila Martini (which we had to order a full size of after sampling it in the flight), you are the winner over the Dharna to me!
