So much so that I don't go as often and when I do it's always takeout since I don't have as much patience as I grow older(who does?), to sit and wait on a line. These scallion pancakes are definitely better when eaten right away, not layered into a box to steam and get soggy. LOL. They are also definitely a little more greasy than you normally breakfast sammie but as a treat, it was delicious. The crisp oniony pancake adds a layer of flavor. The shrimp may not have added as much to the bite, I think next time I'd try something different. As I said up top, no wait did add to the experience. Once you order you are on your own to find seating inside or out. You take the table number to your table and your breakfast will magically appear in 15 mins. They took traditional Asian food one get at Dim Sum and put a twist on it. We got Scallions Pancakes. It is more like a pancake sandwich. To me it loses the scallion taste. It becomes a doughy sandwich that will fill you up. The best for us is the pork fan tuan. It is the meat floss from when I was young eating with congee while sick. Add in a crunchy piece in the middle and a gooey egg. The worst is the rice noodles. It is chunky rice noodles but really oily. Maybe it is the take out container causing that effect but not something I would get again. In between is the tian doujiang with youtiao. Nicely flavor soy milk and crispy fried dough. Another reminder to when I was young. Place is really packed but I like their system of waiting in line for seat. The Bacon Egg and Cheese Scallion Pancake was seared on the outside to have the perfect, satisfying crunch while the cheese on the inside was super gooey and creamy to make the quintessential breakfast "sandwich" bite as good as it gets. But its not a scallion pancake, not even remotely close and I wouldn't recommend this place to a friend who asked me for a scallion pancake place. I also think $16 or $17 for this is quite insane, even for Manhattan. If they charged $8 for this it would be a steal, $13 would be reasonable, but $17 is unreasonably sky-high for what is provided. While I won't repeat my review, I'll generally say that the scallion pancakes, mochi donut, and snow peas are the things to get here. Unlike the Brooklyn location, they had all the bakery items available, so we were able to try the red date cake and peanut butter double baked bao this time. Both lived up to the hype and were my favorites, so I'd recommend both (as well as the previous menu selection above). The food is just as good as the original location in Williamsburg. I've been to both locations now many times and I prefer how much more laid back and spacious the East Village spot is. Maybe I've gotten lucky but during mid-morning on most days there's plenty of seating and food comes out super fast. I'm always getting the pork floss fan tuan with egg and cruller. It is the perfect breakfast, so delicious, filling and affordable. The scallion pancake sandwiches are obviously incredible but the fan tuan is the real star imo. I'm always so excited to see the pastry case here, they change things up all the time. It's always worth getting one of the sweets, but I will always recommend the millet mochi donut. Was so glad that this location opened in Manhattan. The cleanly decorated quick service spot has lots to offer. This bakery was a warm refuge on a cold day. We waited about 20 minutes in a long line, but once you get to the register, they take care of you from start to finish, from seating you to bringing you your food, which is much appreciated when you're in quite crimped quarters, and you don't want to get up and down often. The bakery has some delightful breakfast fusion foods, such as a traditional scallion pancake use as a wrap for a bacon, egg and cheese! My favorite was the fan Tuan, which packed a punch of both flavor and texture. It was a little crunchy on the inside that thing, and I expected, but the crunch really added to the entire tasting experience. I've had BEC before and I've had scallion pancakes, trust, but I was not expecting how greasy the scallion pancake BEC would be. The number of napkins we needed to use to hold the pancake before it got soaked in oil was wild (see pic). ((4.25 stars)) Win Son Bakery is a Taiwanese-American cafe in the East Village. it serves a variety of small & large savory dishes, sweet baked & dessert-y items, a coffee / tea menu, and adult beverages (beer & wine) from morning to evening. the location is a good-sized space for Manhattan with additional sidewalk seats during warmer weather. the interior is bright and clean with modern vibes. the coffee program is pretty solid and i've enjoyed iced americanos and drip coffees here. recently,had the BEC Scallion Pancake. it's made up of bacon + eggs + havarti cheese wrapped up in a soft scallion pankcake. the sandwich is unsurprisingly rich because of the bacon, eggs, melty havarti cheese, and scallion pancake. the bacon is fairly firm and crispy with some chew; the eggs are kind of compressed but are still soft; the havarti is a creamy with a little bit of tanginess and sweetness; and the scallion pancakes are pretty soft without the typical expected crispy exterior. the sandwich is rich, but errs on the oily side because of the scallion pancakes and the other ingredients. the flavors are savory and comforting but they all kinda get lost in each other because they are all competing with one another and get somewhat muted. the sandwich does come with a "ginger deluxe dipping sauce" which is essentially an aioli sauce. the sauce is a nice touch, but i do wish the sandwich got a some refining so the flavors come together into a more memorable bite that reflects more Taiwanese flavors than just a take on a classic bacon-egg-and-cheese. while the BEC scallion pancake isn't a huge sandwich--it is very shareable and i recommend splitting it with someone, so you can order some things off the menu that are a bit more Taiwanese in flavor and conception like the fa tuan or the turnip cake OR any of the excellent pastries like the millet mochi doughnut, vanilla cream bun, or the chocolate bao bolo. the service is friendly and upbeat. there are definitely lines on the weekend, so heading to Win Son Bakery is a better bet during the week and will be less crowded. We opted to sit outside to skip that second line; my friend's matcha came out in just a few minutes but my soy milk didn't get brought out until 20+ minutes later. Everything else (napkins, utensils, water, to go boxes) is self serve. The fan tuan was very tasty but extremely small, less than half the size of the fan tuan I've gotten anywhere else. While the sticky rice is perfectly cooked and I liked the egg inside, it was so small you could eat this in 4 big bites haha. Nowhere close to the almost-burrito size I'm used to. The soy milk and crispy donut were also tasty, but the donut was on the drier, crispier side, which meant it couldn't soak up the soy milk well. The scallion BEC, which I was most excited for (I am a FIEND for scallion pancake), was unfortunately a miss. It wasn't flakey or crispy at all, very dense and oily, and no scallion flavor came through. This was my 2nd time coming to Winson Bakery because the menu surprised me the first time. They're taking Taiwanese American to another level. When I first came, I got this same exact order. The chopped cheese scallion pancake with a side of the fries. And it hit both times. The interior is ambient. The light is dim and it feels intimate. Also, the tables are small. The concept is mind blowing for me. It's messy, but I love the unique take on a New York staple. The scallion pancake already has an interesting texture and dough, so pairing that with the chopped cheese intrigues me lol. Honestly I don't think the filling taste like a chopped cheese at all but it's really good and filling. I felt like it gave off a cheesesteak more than a chopped cheese. Especially with the mix of vegetables. One flaw is that it looks like a burrito but you can't really hold it because it collapses as you take each bite. Both times I've had this dish I had to use fork and knife. Then I had the fries. I don't know what seasoning they use but it's a blend of salt and spices. I get tired of regular salty fries so that extra kick of spice does the job for me. One of my friends ordered the salad and I wish I ordered that instead of the fries. Thrilled to have an outpost of Win Son in Manhattan. I enjoyed the flawlessly stuffed fan tuan (rivaling memories of street food breakfast on my visits to Taiwan). I especially appreciated how the filling was evenly distributed throughout the entirety of the rice wad. Too often, you end up with huge chunks at either end that are only rice--that wasn't the case with Win Son's rendition. The true pièce de résistance here is the bec scallion pancake. To me, this is the apex of east-meets-west city breakfast. Combining two of my fave methods of greasing my gullet first thing in the morning into a singularly flawless mashup is pure insanity (read: genius). Note: if you plan to dine in, it seems that the ideal arrival time is pre-10:00am. Seemingly immediately as our clocks hit that dreaded hour, the queue was out the door. We were in the area and craving glucose, and if you know this area, you know quality dessert spots aren't exactly in abundance. Win Son Bakery was not only open late, but had the kind of casual ample seating any cafe should have. So in we went. The Chocolate Bolo Bao won't impress my Taiwanese relatives, but it'll at least get an A for effort (and in Asian culture, ANY A is cause for celebration). I could've used more chocolate filling, but the crumb-y outer shell was a good tribute to the original pineapple version. The Corn Ice-Cream, on the other hand, should be sold in pints, maybe gallons...hell why not tanks? I'll take one tank of ice-cream, please! Yeah, I know, it's corny to say, but I loved cooling down with its creamy sweetness. It was a-maize-ing. These corn jokes doing it for ya?
