Rude staff. We were looking for sushi in snellville and decided to go to kampai, checked website which said they close at 3. It was 2:00 when we arrived. The door had listed that they close at 2:30. The door was wide open and only two of us... so we decided to go in. We get inside at 2:00 and stand at the front for 4 minutes waiting to see someone to be seated. Lady comes from the back and says "kitchen closes in 10 minutes and we close right at 2:30. "You SURE you wanna eat here as we will be rushed" when we said yes we'd like to eat she huffed and rolled her eyes. Needless to say we walked out. Will never return. read more

The location is at Webb Gin and has plenty of parking. With so many food choices we wanted fresh hibachi so we gave Kampai a try. The atmosphere is nice and the restaurant is clean. We were seated as soon as we arrived. The chef was friendly and the service was speedy and prompt. I ordered the chicken and shrimp hibachi meal. The price was 21.95 plus 1.95 for fried rice. I hate to say it but we had an extremely disappointing (and expensive) hibachi experience. We came in on 8/21 to celebrate my son's ninth birthday. He specifically asked to come here. We eat here on a regular basis and have always enjoyed it in the past. We were extremely disappointed in the hibachi chef. He didn't do any of the usual tricks...no onion volcano, tossing and cracking egg, no single shrimp for everyone. He didn't even talk or make an attempt to be entertaining. Another weird thing was as he was preparing our food he was cooking extra and putting it in a to-go container. It felt like they sent out some random guy from the back to cook our food. He didn't even serve the side sauces until we asked for them. That is typically the first thing they do when they arrive. This guy had no clue! We were just a party of four. Due to it being a special occasion we also ordered sushi. With tip, the check was about $200. The main reason you go to hibachi is for the experience. We definitely had an experience...just not the one we were looking for. Needless to say my son was disappointed in it and remarked that he wished he had chosen Chili's instead. As I was going down my list , I was a little against trying kampai due to the poor reviews , but you never know until you try. So me and friend came in for lunch today. There was a hibachi section and a sushi/bar area. But since it was lunch, only the sushi/bar was open. The interior was interesting. What caught my eyes were the huge lanterns right above the booth. Enough with the decorations. Let's talk about the food So I didnt know what to get for an appetizer and the server recommended the Japanese crabcakes , crispy calamari and fried shrimp gyoza, so I got them all! Out of all of them, I loved the crabcakes. It was like happiness in my mouth. The calamari and gyoza were good as well, but not as great as the japanese crabcakes. At this point I think I ordered to much food. Oh and the food came out in a timely matter, it was fairly quick. TRY THE JAPANESE CRABCAKES!! Trust me!! Time for the main course... We were going to try some sushi. The prices were kinda pricey but I thought it was worth it. I ordered the scenic special and the snellville and my friend ordered the super volcano. I got all my food and my friend was still waiting for his super volcano, but it wasn't a big deal. We still had some appetizers left, and the server did inform us that the super volcano does take some time to make since it was cooking in the oven. Between the scenic special and the snellville I would recommend the snellville, hands down!! It had almost everything I could wish for, fried shrimp, and soft shell crab and spicy tuna. Oh my god.. as I write this review I feel as if I am about to go into a food coma, but lets continue on. My friend received his super volcano roll, it look liked a orange mountain. Despite it's looks it was spicy and delicious. We had to ask the server to bring a pitcher of water. I am getting tried and sleepy, so ill end this review. The service was fairly quick and satifying. I've eaten at the Snellville location two other times before without any incident. This was our first experience with the hibachi cook cooking in front of us. Yeah, like some of the other customers have complained... the cook didn't seem to personable but we didn't let that detract from our time together. We all thought the food was pretty good, but 15 minutes in to my ride home the tail-tail signs of something not being right was starting to hit my stomach. I thought... well maybe it's just gas, but boy was I wrong! Never was I so happy to make it to my home and the bathroom! After having a couple of trips to the potty my stomach started to feel a little better. Just a side note... my wife did a little digging and found out that most Hibachi restaurants use soybean oil to cook with and that it tends to go rancid very quickly. Also, if bad soybean oil has been consumed the body's defense is to get rid of the bad oil quickly which may result in diarrhea and stomach pains. Note to Kampai, I have eaten at many Hibachi style restaurants and have NEVER had an issue... EVER TIL NOW!!! I hope and pray you're not serving bad cooking oil your customers! read more

Great sushi, tuna, tapas and veggies. The menu can be a bit overwhelming, being that it is 15 pages long. Once you can get through it, the food is great. The service, however, is poor. There wasn't a host when I arrived and the server took FOREVER to take our order or answer our questions. The kitchen was super fast. Food was ok. Nothing to complain about. Our bill was $89. We paid cash, a $100 and a $20. Our server was unable to make change for the $20. They brought back the $20 and $6.00 in quarters. We would have tipped well, but at this point we had little choice. While trying to figure out how to sort the situation we were told "do what you have to do" and our server walked away. Pretty annoying a restaurant could not produce change for $20. She was still annoyed, and we left a $24 tip. Kampai, you need change available at all times, for all shifts, for all patrons. Service here is excellent. I was hoping to have the full hibachi experience however it's not offered for lunch Monday through Thursday. The hotess stated the hibachi was located in the kitchen during lunch on these days. The chicken hibachi plate was warm, not hot, and bland to taste. It may have been heated in a skillet but it definitely was not fresh off the hibachi. Bring your own seasoning. The restroom could use some updating but was clean. The host told the person prepareing my rolls that information after I was there 10 mins and he I know already placed them in box. It was the way he looked up at me to see if I caught what she said. I ordered "age dashi tofu" as an appetizer, and and it was fried tofu soaked in sour rice vinegar. I almost blew it all out of my mouth because that was completely unexpected taste. It's supposed to be soaked in a warm and sweet dashi-jiru. And it didn't come with any garnishes like bonito flakes or chopped scallions. Or even if it did, it wasn't edible. I came here with my work related people, so I couldn't even stick the dish back the kitchen or make a scene. We visited this place for the 1st time to treat my sister to dinner in celebration of her birthday and to distract her from her cancer treatments. The service was very poor and the chef wasn't not very interested while cooking. Our hostess was rude too. I had informed them we were celebrating a birthday. They brought a cupcake to the table next to us for someone celebrating a birthday and I reminded her that we were also celebrating one. The server was terrible, we had a party of 4 and was automatically charged 18% tip in my tab. The lady told us that there's a sign stating at the door, but when we looked at the sign it said "party of 5 or more is automatically charged tip."
